- In this video I will show you how to move a heat register. We will cover cutting a new hole, modifying the new register boot, extending the flexible duct and attaching it to the sub floor. This video is a supplemental video for the hardwood flooring video series.

Cheap cheap cheap. Ill stick with my 1970 home. 2x10 solid joists. Solid build
I joists are good because they can span longer distances and use less lumber. However, they have discovered they do not perform well in a fire situation, so now you have to have the I joists fire protected or install fire code drywall. Next house I am not sure which I will choose. Thanks for the comment.
@@designbuildandfix go for the solid lumber. There's a reason the great pyramids of Giza are still standing, and it isn't because of cheap materials

Curious why you're preferring the diffuser that extends up from the floor instead of a flush register? I have the former and want to convert to the flush register since I think those are ugly/dated looking.
I like the look of the diffuser that extends from the floor as opposed to out of the wall. Also, if it come out of the wall I have one more item to cut drywall around and another weak link in the thermal envelope. Just my thoughts. Thanks for commenting.
@@designbuildandfix I think he was saying put the register out from the wall in the floor, not up the wall further. I'm gonna do the same thing. I have the corner look

This is not how you connect flex duct. 22:22
1) inner tube has to be attached to connector piece (tie, mastic, ul listed hvac tape) or it will come off 2) you don't want to zip tie insulation, any compressed insulation compromises functionality. Just tape them together and ensure insulation of each flex duct piece connect without gaps. I recommend researching proper installation guides before putting out instructional videos.
Thx for your comment. I have been building and remodeling homes since 1995. I will admit the only area of the build process I do not do is the heating and air conditioning. The ducts being moved was in my house and I simply looked at the current ducts and how they were attached. I assumed they were installed correctly because he was one of the best in the area and have used him for all my jobs until he passed away. I also asked the heating supply store and that is how they told me to do it. I know insulation is useless if it is compressed. I would never compress it in a wall cavity. I believe the heat loss based on the area would be small compared to the area on the transition boot that has no insulation. I know this is only adding to the lowered efficiency based on all components that have been installed. You are correct. I should have verified the accuracy of the install in multiple places before making and releasing the video. Thanks for pointing it out. Everything is a learning experience as we strive for perfection.

Great video. So many more vents than in my 1978 home. lol Would it be safer to drill a pilot hole (from the bottom, between the joists) then measure from either side of the hole to make sure you don't cut into the floor joist flanges?
That would work as long as you are absolutely sure you are in the right spot. If you are just moving a floor register and not replacing the flooring then it is very important that you are in the right spot. Other wise you could be drilling through your good flooring.
Thats why i love florida this is too much of headaches and no one does good job working underneath a house with no crawl space(when that happens)
Im a newbie. What do u do with the old supply holes? Do u cover them up?
If you are going to put hardwood down, then you can just go over them as long as the hardwood floors go perpendicular to the holes, the seam of the hardwood does not fall in the middle of the opening and the span of the hardwood is not more then 4 inches or so. If the above criteria does not work then cut the subfloor out and glue and screw new subfloor down. If the hardwood goes parallel to the holes, then they have to have as much barring as possible. If you do not have enough support, then I would cut the subfloor out to the joists and then glue and screw the new sub floor down to prevent squeaks.
Just curious to why you wouldn’t use floor registers? Why out in nice baseboard just to have the ugly baseboard diffusers?
I do not like the look of a floor register in the middle of a floor. I would rather have the registers come out of the floor next to the baseboard mostly because furniture will hide most of them. Also the floor registers in the middle of the room tend to collect more dust and dirt then the ones by the baseboard. No real functional difference. I guess it is just personal preference. Do you have a picture of how your baseboard diffusers look like against that baseboard? You have the same setup as me but I’m trying to do the opposite. I was going to move the duct work away from the wall to run the baseboard behind and then use floor vents. But maybe I would use baseboard diffusers against the baseboard like you are to save myself the trouble of moving the vents away from the wall.I just thought eliminating the baseboard diffusers and going with floor ones would look a lot better.

Why don't you guys stick with the title of video and just show a simple moving of a register. Instead you have some flanged I joint and fitting a larger boot in a small opening. It's like the video title is ' curing common cold' and describing some exotic pneumonia.
Moving a register is not a simple task. There are many different variations depending on solid lumber joists and I joists. Not everything is going to fit like it is suppose to. I have been building and fixing homes for 30 years and home owners think everything is simple and easy. It is not. I should make a video showing all the things that I have seen people do because they thought it was simple and then got in over their heads. Then just rigged it so it would kind of work. Sorry my video disappointed you. I try to give the most information so people have the most information.

As a 28 year Technology Education teacher and a 30 year homebuilder, I am always looking to improve at what I do. I have done this multiple times with no problems. Yes, the register air flow is being reduced by a little, but the furnace will still have adequate return air flow. What techniques would you have used to move this register?
