Granite Countertop DIY (Episode 8 Sink Cut Out and Rodding)
You’re a hacker
Doing research to mount a sink and looking for the easiest and most dependable mounting solution when I found this vid. Ordering that Hercules system now. Thanks for the informative video!
Glad it helped!
What size screws did you use when connecting the corner to the adjacent cabinets with the 3 face screws?
I usually use 2" screws. the point of the screw will slightly pop thru. However, you will never see, touch or notice this.
¼” x ¼” ? what is that in mm ?
Sorry for late response. Crazy busy! These sizes are in inches. Here is a list of the trowel size that is most likely going to work based on the tile size. But I would still test it. A 3/16-inch to 1/4-inch V-notch trowel works best for up to 4.5-inch mosaic or wall tile. A 1/4-inch by 1/4-inch Square-notch trowel should be used for 4-inch to 8-inch tile. A 1/4-inch by 3/8-inch Square or U-notch works for 8-inch to 16-inch tile. And 1/2-inch by 1/2-inch Square or U-notch works for tile that is 16-inches and up.
Hello! Thanks for making this video!! Making my own kitchen! Question, after the 3000 grit you mentioned you buffed it. What did you use to buff the granite?
Sorry for late response. Crazy busy. Sounds like a great project. Good luck and have fun!! There is a buffing pad that you can buy from your supplier. Here is a link to the one that I use. You can also buy a set of pads which usually includes this pad. I usually wet buff. www.bbindustriesllc.com/viper-diamond-granite-wet-polishing-pad-4-buff-light-and-dark-stone.html
@designbuildandfix thanks for letting me know! Will definitely get that!!
what's the total thickness of your subfloor including underlayment? thanks.
On this floor I have standard 3/4" tongue & groove 7 ply plywood. This sets on 11" I joists 12" on center. The floor is very stiff because I designed it for a hot tub to be placed on it but then changed my mind and put it out side. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting.
What exactly do you mean by removing scratches left by the previous pad? What will happen if I don't do this?
Polishing or sanding is nothing more then scratching a surface with finer and finer scratches. If you don't remove the larger scratches left by the previous pad the surface will shine up but you will see those scratches left from before making the surface look horrible. I have done this many times trying to save time only to have to go back to the grit that I left the scratches' with. Usually in my case it is with the 100 grit pads. However, I don't see them until after the 800 grit pads because that is when the shine starts to appear. Just pay close attention to what the edge looks like after you have finished with that grit. If there is a spot that does not look like all the rest, go back and touch that area up. Hope this helped. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks for your good video. What speeds are you using for the buffing and polishing?
All machines will be different. I set mine at 3 or 4. The manual for the machine will tell you what the RPMs are for that setting you are on. Thanks for commenting.
Great video. Thank you
Thanks for watching.
I'm getting ready to attack this job. I'm an auto mechanic and tow truck driver and I wish this required wrenches and sockets but it doesn't so you posting this video is really taking away the anxiety to do this. Do I need a special saw blade to cut Luan? Do I use a circular saw? Jigsaw? Sawzall? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you again for a nicely detailed and informative video for people like me that don't know how to do art like what your doing
Projects like kitchen remodels can be very over whelming. You can do it. Just take your time. It is not a race. Think things through before you do them and it will come out amazing. As far a a special blade for cutting Luan. I would purchase a blade that has a least 40 teeth for your 7 1/4 circular saw.. These are more of a finishing blade. Have fun and good luck with your project.
appears to be mostly about a guy's face...
Can you make a video on the tile table and gentry set up you have?
Excellent video, thank you! I am looking to install hardwood parallel to the floor joists. NWFA recommends 15/32 plywood over existing subfloor or bracing the joists. The first option is a no go, so I have to go with the second option. Which type of bracing will be preferred in terms of making it more stable and lesssqueaky, block or cross? Will using glue with screws help alleviate the squeakiness? Thank you!
I always use solid blocking that is glued and screwed.
How much oil capacity please?
Hi. I am not sure of the question. We do not use any oil.
Question , for the angle grinder what are the attachments called on it. First it was its original attachment then it was a polish padd? I’m craftsman so I am looking for everything online with craftsman
The angle grinder can be used for many things. It can have the standard diamond tipped blade for cutting or shaping. You can also install a hook and loop pad for the polishing pads to attach to so you can polish the edges of the stone. Finally you can attach a profile bit to grind the edges down to create the edge profile for the stone. They all will take a 5/8 arbor which is standard for these machines. thanks for commenting and asking the question.
Here is the best way to template your undermount sink ua-cam.com/video/Msc4nSAl_VQ/v-deo.html
I wish I could hire you to install my cabinets.
You can do it. It really is pretty easy with some basic hand tool skills. Thanks for commenting!
Wat year is it
It was a 2012 E450 shuttle bus.
The most comprehensive series, thank you! About edge profile, what are the model numbers of the rubber support disc and the router profile bit? And, as one of viewers pointed out, it seems polishing pads can do the roundover and you mentioned you’d give it a try, how did it go? Suffice to use polishing pads only or hand profile is required? Thank you in advance!
Here is the edge router bit link that I use. www.bbindustriesllc.com/alpha-vacuum-brazed-profile-wheels.html The polishing pad method does not give you an exact profile over the length of the countertop. When finished you can feel and see the in perfections in the edge. thanks for commenting.
Curious why you're preferring the diffuser that extends up from the floor instead of a flush register? I have the former and want to convert to the flush register since I think those are ugly/dated looking.
I like the look of the diffuser that extends from the floor as opposed to out of the wall. Also, if it come out of the wall I have one more item to cut drywall around and another weak link in the thermal envelope. Just my thoughts. Thanks for commenting.
@@designbuildandfix I think he was saying put the register out from the wall in the floor, not up the wall further. I'm gonna do the same thing. I have the corner look
@@designbuildandfix Thanks, I meant flush to the floor. I'm putting new wood floors in so easy to change now.
Thank for posting - this was a good into to something i have never attempted before

Nice work sir., i am re using a granite countertop and I cut it in half now I have to sand etc sides also I want to cut rounded corner next to the door. To save my hip it’s narrow and I’m not 👍🏻
Sounds like a fun project. Good luck and have fun.
I see your PVC idea didn't work as well as planned. Oops - dirt in the Bark. You would have had better luck if you built a runner / sled to put the log on and used larger Dia. PVC under the sled. = No Dirt in the Bark.
You are right. Thanks for the info.
Sorry, I cannot watch anymore.

I appreciate this. I changed my blower motor last year and had no idea about the resistor so I think I'll have to check into it soon.
Glad this could help you. Thanks for commenting.
Helpful !! What kind / product is used for the sealer mentioned at the end of the video?
I use this product form BB Industries. Here is the link for sealers and enhancers or just sealer. www.bbindustriesllc.com/sealers-adhesives-cleaners/sealers/stone-shield.html
Wow. I didn’t expect a reply. Thanks so much for the link!!
Good video, thanks. I was looking for help on levelling. My subfloor looks like a roller coaster.
Glad you liked it. This will help with leveling but it will only go so far. Should work for laminate flooring.
After going through all of my pads (carefully), the granite still looks slightly cloudy. I'm a bit concerned. At the end, you mention a "sealer and enhancer." Is this why? How do I know if my results are 'normal'? I mean, just how much can a product like that fix? Do you have one that you recommend? And did I miss your video on the topic? Thanks in advance; so far you've been a big help. What a stressful job.
Usually if the granite is still a little cloudy it is because some of the larger scratches left by a previous sanding pad was not fully removed. I have had this happen to me. The only fix is to go back and start the polishing process over again. I would first try a small section and see if that fixes it. You will know for sure by doing this. The enhancer will bring the colors out but will not remove the cloudiness from polishing. Here is the brand that I use. www.bbindustriesllc.com/sealers-adhesives-cleaners/sealers/stone-shield.html Granite fabrication is very stressful. I remember my first slab. Very stressful. It gets easier. Thanks for watching and fabricating your own tops. Very rewarding.
@@designbuildandfix Thanks for your continued help and understanding. I'm learning lots, but it really is an undertaking.
Your sketchup video's are amazing, You are a great teacher.
Glad you enjoyed and I could help. Thanks for watching.
Nice, simple technique at 4:30. Moving that sink cutout piece is the part that has me most worried. Thanks.
Glad I could help.
Hey DBF I have some questions about your trailer A frame 5:16. With the prices of installs lately getting quoted north of 10k I'm really looking into doing this myself. Transportation for several hundred miles is my only concern. TIA
You can transport the granite slabs or the finished countertops for many many miles as long as they are strapped well and you are using a well built trailer A frame that is screwed or bolted to your trailer. I would have no worries transporting them the distance you are talking about.
Right now, I'm in the planning stage for a DIY granite countertop. A few questions, if you have time for them: 1) What was that white wax pen that you used to mark the granite called? To spare me the trial & error of buying one without knowing, I'd love a recommendation! 2) What diameter hole-saw did you use, and is that a standard (or at least typical kitchen) size? 3) Has your opinion about embedding a steel support changed since filming this? I'd be concerned with rust, and so I'm considering using a wood/steel under-support. Thanks for any help!
Sorry for the late response. Crazy buy schedule. The marker I use I get from BBIndustries. Here is the link to the product. www.bbindustriesllc.com/skm-industrial-grade-white-paint-marker-w-metal-tip-01295.html The hole size for the faucet is a 1 3/8". The corners for the sink cutout is a 3" and the round over bit for the edging is a 3/8" All can be found at BBIndustries. Here is the link to the home page. www.bbindustriesllc.com/?msclkid=40b54be548e81bdff3222dac3fc956f2&US%20Search%3A%20Branded%3A%20Braxton-Bragg%20-%20JF&Braxton-Bragg If you are concerned with rust you can use either fiberglass or carbon fiber rodding. Here is a link to the place where I buy all my supplies. it will take you to the page. Just scroll down to see the different types. www.bbindustriesllc.com/sinks.html My next countertop for the lake house teardown rebuild series I will be using either the fiberglass or the carbon fiber. I have to due some more research on it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video, it is very useful. I have a question, my kitchen has Ceasarstone, under the counter top around the edge it has 40mm cushion tape and 20mm stone, the only way this counter top fit in is putting the cushion tape ON TOP of the cabinet, if we put it flat and the tape touching the edge of the cabinet the counter top is short about 20mm from the wall. Is that the right way to seat that counter top? (Put the cushion tape at the edge on top of the cabinet, that way the counter top is not level) thanks
I would have to see a picture to fully understand.
Thanks 🙏🏼
You are welcome.
Great videos! Very helpful! You mentioned you have a variable speed angle grinder. Can you share what speeds you use for the various tasks, (hole saw drilling, cutting wheel, profile shaping, various grit pads). Thank you!
Sorry for the late response. Crazy busy schedule. I usually set my grinder to 2. I use that for all my operations. Thanks for watching.
Will these cables distort the bottom of the sink? The upper brackets (6:57) are installed just above the dadoed particle board channel. My guess is the screws would rip out upon tightening the cables
It has to be tight but not supper tight that the screws pull out. The silicone also gives some support. I have a tendency to overtighten everything and I have not pulled any screws out or deformed the sink. However I would recommended using a heavier gauge sink. thanks for watching. Hope this helped.
I'd like to use a larger undercount sink. Can the sink be supported by the plywood countertop eliminating the mounting brackets? Manufacturer recommends 1.5" on each side for brackets.
I have never done this. I would think it would, being it is 3/4 plywood. However, I am not sure.
I thought in one of the first videos you paid 1,200$ for the granite slab? Also I thought there was a number of lime 12/13,000$ for something, in regard to savings. Either way, I’m a petty DIY guy and gave me even more confidence to do this project, great job
Hi. I believe the granite for this job was 2 slabs and the cost was about $1200. I did pay $1200 for a remnant piece from a fabricator that was a little less then a half sheet. I did this because I had no other options. I did save about $12000 or so on granite countertops for a high end rental I built. That savings was from a quote I got from Home Depot to do the job. Granite is pretty easy to do. You just have to be careful not to crack it when moving the sheets or pieces. Also very careful to not drop it on yourself. You only have to have patience's on the edging, polishing and the seaming. I will have more granite videos out from the lake house tear down rebuild series I am doing now. Videos are coming out slowly based on the time needed to build this cottage. If you are a good DIY person you should be able to do this easily!!! Anyway here is the link to this series. ua-cam.com/video/sUn_gg8y5U0/v-deo.html
@@designbuildandfix perfect, I’ll be watching out for them. Thank you
Great video, do you do personalized classes for sketchup ? Im willing to pay you to teach me, let me know ! I want to do renders and no one in my area is willing to teach this stuff to not have any competition.
Hi. I have not gotten to that point yet. However, I will put out some more videos on how to put textures on surfaces to make the house look more realistic. Here is link to a series I am doing now with a SketchUp rending of the project. This is probably a good example of what you want to do. Here is the link to the video. ua-cam.com/video/sUn_gg8y5U0/v-deo.html
Glad you’re using screw-in mounting clips. CANNOT beLIEVE - ADHESIVE-ONLY (*especially* with *just* “silicone” 🤔😱🤦🏻♂️ vs. / vs. also epoxy) is even an option for having to support the ENTIRE weight of such a HEAVY SINK - not to MENTION the weight of it being filled with WATER and/or (for kitchen sinks) heavy DISPOSAL, DISHES and POTS! - DESPITE the existence and acceptability of relatively cheap and easy SCREW-IN mounting clips methods!? Whoever decided that was(/were) an IDIOT(S) and/or GREEDY / CHEAP MEGA-BUILDER(S) that had too much influence on the official / defacto construction standards!? NO ADHESIVE lasts FOREVER!? Granted, neither do screw mounts, but they defo last HECK of a lot longer than adhesive - AND support MUCH more WEIGHT while doing so!? AND you can MUCH more easily INSPECT to see if they’re failing!? AND MUCH more easily REPAIR that failure (by tightening the screws and if necessary, injecting glue and re-drill)!?
Mounting brackets with screws is a really good option. You will be surprised as to how much screws can hold. I will be coming out with more granite videos when I do the granite for the lake house tear down rebuild series I am doing now. In these videos I will be showing how to use the drill in clips. These are better and easier if you have the right drilling equipment. If you don't have the right equipment the bracket system shown is a really good option. Here is the link to that series. ua-cam.com/video/sUn_gg8y5U0/v-deo.html Videos are coming out slow because of the time needed to build the cottage.
Your video is very helpful. Thank you. How much time approximately did it take you to finish the edges or corners of that piece of granite?.
The piece in the video took about an hour. The whole countertop for this job was about 6 hours. Glad it was helpful!!
