An inspection of the camshaft chain and tensioner to see if there is excessive play or not? Seems tight and no sign of any debris in the bottom of the cam chain cover.
It looks like the seal for the tensioner is 'blowen'. The tensioner has an internal spring that exerts an outward force against the chain but its real tension force is supplied by oil pressure via the oil pump. When you compressed the tensioner you can see the oil pool around the shaft. This loss of pressure can result in noisy start-ups and 'chasing' timing values. I'd replace only the tensioner if the chain has no excessive wear.
You shouldn't be able to push the piston down with your fingers because it's hydraulic. The seals of the hydraulic tensioner are done and the oil bleeds you need new ones.
It seem it's spring loaded and when the engine is off the whole tension comes from the spring itself, now this is a really BAD design for such important timing component because the startup tension is so weak and it's possible to go out of time when the engine is starting up and it's very cold outside (oil viscosity).
Just for Fun now is this the timing chain tensioner or the camshaft tensioner?? I have a 2010 a4 B8 engine and my car wouldnt start. Dealer says jumped timing whatever that means and $7500 to fix. New cylinder head timing chain the works. I wasnt driving though i was idle when it happened. Turned the car on and it started shaking alot and got a P0016 code.
Actually it has a spring to assist cold startup tension, otherwise it wouldn't expand again when he lets go there's no oil pressure with the engine off. But you're right there's oil weeping out of the sides of the piston so it's loosing oil pressure and tension while in operation.
How difficult is it to change the chain and tensioner? I have a golf mk5 gti axx code and mine only rattles for a couple of seconds on start up as if it's banging on the cover.. Any information please
Don't ignore the problem , my oil pump and chain guides had excessive swarf in them , contaminated through the engine , I had to renew the engine with Audi service centre , don't ask the cost 😢😭😭

It's normal for the tensioner to be like that when engine is not running. If get right when oil is flowing

Just for Fun when the cars off there is no oil pressure to force it up. So when engine is off yes you'll be able to push it in.

When started it will tighten

Having fun there?
Hola te hacía ruido en caliente el coche como un golpeteo tipo taques??

probably the cam phaser. Scotty Kilmer says it's not a big deal
is tricky.....and hard.. but well... u can do it with right instruments

I was told that the timing chain cover also needs to replaced after removing it. Is this correct? I have a 2006 GTI (FSI).
What’s the location for of this tensioner back of the engine I got 2008 b7
how do you remove the chain?
