Good to have you back Jan, this channel is one which I most look forward to, the old girl in retirement it’s good to see you appreciate the hard work she gave to the dairy, she must be well over the 100 ton mark! would love to know how much she gave, take care, from Wales UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Supporting breast cancer research with purchases for a *dairy* farm is very appropriate. 💖
I saw a channel where he picked up an old 6-foot brush from a car wash and mounted it on a post stuck into the ground. His herd made use of it. Being repurposed scrap that needed no power or control mechanism, it was a free supplement to fancy brush machines.

Your Dad "Signing Off" was Banger Jan! LOLOLOL Really glad you all are going for the Crop Insurance too. As you mentioned, the "Stress" factor has already diminished some and you are right in hoping for No Drought conditions...but in case Nature has other plans, you are protected to some degree! Always nice to have a safety net. You were concerned last fall with your Canola due to grass hopper numbers. That and the dry hot summer had me wondering how things turned out come harvest. Nice to have you back, smaller, family run Canadian dairy farmers need some representation and a voice. You do both of those very well.

My sister's champion 4-H star lived to a ripe old age. she was the senior cow in the herd, all of the others respected her, She was usually the first in the barn after being out in the pasture, all the others stood aside for her to pass through. I don't remember how old she was when she stopped producing milk. She was the honorary "grandmother" to most of the calves that might be born out in the pasture in the summer. When we dispersed the herd, she went to a local farm museum and joined their other animals where she lived out her days. Those 4-H animals are always special.

In Germany all DeLaval SCB have yellow brushes, blue brushes only availabe as spare part.
Pink you get only as wrap plastic for silage bales. Breast cancer is not so much a public topic than in northern america because a good working prevention system.

Love watching cows on new bedding & on the brush!..... On the cow hooves, what if you need more than a shaving? Like for a big sore or something, do you do the medicine & wrap yourself? Finally, Gierok Farms ( WI ) has a you tube video. Ever watch them? They did a great one today on " Numbers on a Dairy ". Very interesting. If you did one of those, it would probably answer a lot of questions you must get. Just a suggestion.

A farmer friend in S. Dakota told me had it not been for crop insurance the last few years they would've been forced to sell off most of their herd of beef cattle because their hay yeilds were dismal..
But they have been able to buy what is needed .
Also , in a good year they grow enough corn & beans to sell several semi loads after their herd needs were met ..
But the last 3/4 yrs the drought has lowered their yields & very little went to ethanol plants...
But he said every year their insurance rates have increased substantially and if not for the sales of the pure breed bulls the farm would've not profited ...
Most farms operate on the edge as is but if this drought continues I think we'll start seeing many more farms go under...

Since you didn't have crop insurance recently, if a loss, or low bushel per acre happens, will payment then be based on yeild average of area fields are in, till you get a consistent harvest average registered against your growing averages? That's how I've understood it anyways. Good to see you back 👍👍

The best way to prevent a drought is to buy crop insurance. The best way to prevent heavy snowfall season is to buy a new snow blower. Seems that way- just saying. LOL I bought a new snow blower- hardly used it.
