Matt I am surprised and disappointed that you don't drink, alcohol in relative moderation makes everyone feel good. I am disappointed with the SL3's battery life which is a mere 260 shots per charge when using the rear LCD, which is how I shoot due to old age. I am also disappointed that they didn't launch a silver version simultaneously, the fake leather looks and feels so much better on the silver SL2.

Nice camera, but I would have preferred a flush LCD design, similar to what's seen in the SL. The eyepiece could have been redesigned as well, since it's not very robust. Switches are better than power buttons, and brass is superior to aluminum, especially if the camera is used extensively. I've heard more than once that the camera might not eject the battery properly after a fall, indicating that the mechanism, although nice, should be more robust. It would also be interesting to see a comparison of the native image outputs from the SL, SL2, and SL3. Overall, I prefer the aesthetics of the 601.
Nice video Matt. Already saw Math from Switserland video. He was invited at the Leica factory. The SL3 is completely made in Germany not in Portugal. I asked him to try the SL3 with M lenses in a future video cause he has all of them. The SL3 should be smaller like the rumours said. Did you notice that or is it not true. Here in NL the price is 6800 euro. Good price imo. I like the new standby mode too. Are you buying ? Anyways thanks for sharing.
Thanks Rob, yes as I understand there was the Germany meet and the UK one for Europe. Kai and a few others went to the Germany one too. Yes it's smaller and lighter, you can see it in on clip next to my SL. Yes great price vs. M11 (same sensor, same photos). No I'm happy with my SL (I'm more into film at the moment). Cheers

So Matt, you say people were crying out for improved autofocus. Do you think the autofocus on the SL2 was poor? Would it stack up with say, the Nikon range of similar age such as the Z7ii?
Hi David, I’m not the best person to ask as I shoot MF 99% and I’ve not used other brands that much BUT I think most agree that previous model AF works but it’s not super fast eye detect style AF. (It’s the old contrast detect). SL3 is starting to getting closer to other brands AF.
I’m looking forward to maybe getting a cheap SL soon! I honestly don’t need most of the improvements of the 2 2S and 3 and would rather blow my money on more lenses
The good news is it feels like a Leica and shoots like a Leica so that's the key. (I own Lumix S5 too but never pick it up because.. it feels like a Lumix!). HUGE DIFFERENCE :) ..and VF is crap! :)
If you saw my SL-SL2-SL2S video you'll see the Sl2 isn't great at low light. Compare the SL vs SL2 in that video then see this video again and it should be easily 1+ stops better (2+ stops I would guess if use 18MP)
Congrats on the invite that’s quite some feat Struggling to work out why I’d upgrade from the SL2-S to be honest for my wedding work I don’t need 60mp, I don’t want a flip screen and whilst the AF could be good I really don’t think it’s up to par with the Sony A9 original. Plus at £6k , with no charger ,no battery charger and new cards it’s going to be a £7k + spend…
I am deciding between SL2 sliver which is around $3k now and the much more expensive SL3. Do you like the straight out of camera color of SL3? I heard the color of SL is the best and then SL2. I am slightly afraid that the SL3 photos I have seen so far looks like the ones from Sony A7RV which is not a good thing IMO and may require some editing.
Hi, yes the SL3 colours are like the M11 colours. More magenta. You can fix with a preset if shooting RAW. Yes most agree that the first SL has the best colours. If you don't need the fancy AF and tilt screen get the SL2.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks for the detailed replies! I used AF for people and animals pretty often on my Sony before I sold it. I don’t miss it too much so I will go with the SL2 then! I still want the convince of USBC charging which is why I’m not getting the SL.

Matt : will this higher count sensor 65 mp's .... be a problem with our older Leica M lenses like my DR Summicron , or my APO / ASPH Summicron 90mm F2 ? I also use Voightlander glass and adapt certain M42 German lenses. What are your thoughts Matt ?
📸 The stuff that DREAMS are made of & if you don’t have a dream how can you make it come true. Like a good ROLEX watch a LEICA SL3 is a good investment and wonderful camera to have as a family heirloom to hand down to the next generation of photographer filmmaker. I now know what I am working towards and saving up for.✌🏻😎🇦🇺
If this were any other brand I would go “great now the sl2 will be dirt cheap!” I’m sure there will be more people trying to offload them in the near future so I guess I’ll be on the lookout
The downside to the Z8 is that it is predominantly made of plastic, if one was to use any of the SL series cameras as a hammer on the Z8 the Z8 would get pulverised in seconds; it is the worst mistake Nikon did with the Z8 compromise on it's build quality, therefore it is definitely not a baby Z9.
Personally, i do think 60 MP is simply overkill. Think about the filesizes, and at the end, it's just the 36x24mm Sensor... and not every lens could resolve so much resolution, optical flaws do show more, than with a 24 MP Sensor.🙂 This Megapixel war goes on since the 1st DSLRs...otherwise, fine DSLM for the wealthy.
The L lenses are all still too big so I’d be using my M lenses, in which case I may as well just stay with my M11. If they had smaller L lenses I might change my mind.
Hi Ian, if you use the EVF on the M11 most of the time I would get a SL series for a far better experience (I own the M10 so sit in both camps), but for a small setup and RF use/ zone focusing the M system is king. (Hence I use both for difference tasks now).
It's a strong man who can turn down a dram of Glenfarclas. They've done well to lose weight while adding features, but I think it is still too heavy for me. I enjoyed everything about the SL2 apart from the weight, and still wish I had kept my CL, and belong to the wish they had upgraded it brigade.
Thanks, yes I'll be honest I nearly buckled to the peer pressure of the situation but I thought, no I'm old enough now to not follow the crowd and politely decline. Yes the CL is still awesome. See the next video/ video soon as I was using it in Poland.
So far the number one negative trend for me is the battery life. Every review I have seen and read seems to be the low life of the new battery. I have 4 batteries for my SL2S and Q2 and I know I can't use those to get the full potential of the SL3 so having to buy the new batteries and multiple ones is frustrating. I do like the new accessory of the USBC coupler but that will still require an outside power source. I really want to buy this camera but so far I'm leaning toward waiting for the next generation. Maybe SL3S???
I think the SL3 will work fine with your batteries, it's only some specifics that might work slower with older batteries (as I understand). I think the battery is likely similar to any modern mirrorless camera that uses AF lenses. They last forever with M lenses.
I can see that the SL3 is a good camera, but if I want the SL3, I would rather go Nikon for more value and opportunity in lens. From a user standpoint, would you upgrade to the SL3 or go the m11 route? I would buy Leica because Leica is iconic and original, such as the m series. I would rather go Nikon zf than sl3.
Yes, tough question as I don’t need 60MP. I’d go black M11 for the low weight and small M size to aim to use it as a RF and without an EVF. I bought my M10 for this but love my SL for portrait sessions.
Just thinking about buying another £50 Olympus OM 2 body to add to the fleet and then THIS dammit! Luckily there is no way on earth I can afford this so safe for now......lol
Interesting, SL3 looks actually larger than 601. I must say, it is probably not worth the upgrade IMO. Designwise, I must say original SL is so much cleaner look thank SL2 and SL3
We have a saying in the Persian language, it goes, The Crow wanted to walk like a Rock Partridge. In the effort, it forgot to walk like a Crow. They hae rui d tne beautiful ergonomics and simple but highly instinctive functionality of the SL to come up with something that is neither a Leica nor a Nikon Z9 or even a Sony A1. Why? I am not usually critical of Leica, perhaps due to the fact that their M line of cameras is still based on trend that the family owned business chose, and not a corporation. Just look at that stupid dial on the top, and the positioning of the original buttons. Just because the ' people ' want it, does not mean it is the right thing to implement in an otherwise iconic camera.
Thanks, yes I guess it's difficult. Do they give what people want and add lots of things in a hope to please, or risk everything (like the SL) and make what they deem to be a great camera. It's a business at the end but if it helps them fund the brand as a whole it's still a good thing. We can pick the cameras that suit us.
If I were in the market for any SL, it would be the SL2s. I don't need anything that the SL2s does not have. There is a question about implementing the IBIS with none-Leica adapters and lenses, but I have not read or heard arguments to clear this up as yet. I like yourself, have quite a few vintage Leica and non Leica M mount lenses so a working IBIS is important to me due to my physical condition. @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Always so useful, but it feels like you’ve sold out to the Leica Behemoth.. I loved when you criticized the overly high prices of Leica and offered less expensive alternatives. And valued older generations like the SL 601. So says the owner of a new Leica 35 Summilux FLE II. The nerve!
I'd rather prefer the M11-P over the SL3. The SL3 is not a pretty tool, it even lacks standards like a built-in GPS-module and has no internal memory. I simply don't want to add another stupid card format for no good reason as the SL3 is still a super slow camera. The M11-P is the more advanced and thought out camera in that price range.
Yeah theres a lot of money in those cases.. but Leica gets huge props and hours of free promotion on your channel.. and still you have to hand the camera back.... considering all the people who you have turned on to Leica, seems like the least they could do is give you a camera...
Silly thing too the old SL did not have the leather on the front. My sl2-s’s are like the SL3 and if you use them a lot the leather wears out because my fingernails rub against it To get the leather replaced costs a fortune The original SL would not have that issue
Thanks, I yes ew all like different systems. Some will prefer Nikon Z, some Hassy, some Fuji. I still like my SL. (If I can get a GFX to review at some point I can give my opinion as to how they compare in real use). I've never used a better finder as the SL2/SL3/SL2S so would be interesting to try a Fuji.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yeah I don’t have any love for any brand as they don’t care about bother us Leica bringing out a new camera with the same evf is just lazy, yes it was ok but when 9.1mp is available then the sl3 should have that imo A swing and a miss for me You should get the gfx100ii it’s evf is beautiful and the only thing I dislike about my gfx100s is the evf isn’t up to standard
Thanks Steve! Yes most were journalists. Ofc. Honest reviews .. I still like film and my old SL but the SL3 is great for those that need those features.

Love Your videos and wondering do You use a GoPro or iPhone for the closeups of the cameras? Cheers!
Thanks! Newer iPhone (13) for close ups. GoPro for wides (not this video)
Thanks, yes multiple people have said they prefer the classic 601 styling.
Cheers
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Great but I would have loved you putting your Voigtlander lenses on the SL3 and show the results.
Next week I am going to play with a SL3 at my Camerashop
Have a nice weekend
Right, yes I love my SL and don't look to upgrade. SL is the best value Leica IMO.
THanks Matt, ask them to release a Monochrome SL.......PLEASE
Thanks! I did mention it and I'm sure one will follow (same sensor as M11M)
ER, you mean the latest Panasonic surely..... nice review Matt.
The good news is it feels like a Leica and shoots like a Leica so that's the key. (I own Lumix S5 too but never pick it up because.. it feels like a Lumix!). HUGE DIFFERENCE :) ..and VF is crap! :)
Matt, when shooting at iso over 6400 is the SL3 significantly, moderately, slightly better than the SL2?
If you saw my SL-SL2-SL2S video you'll see the Sl2 isn't great at low light. Compare the SL vs SL2 in that video then see this video again and it should be easily 1+ stops better (2+ stops I would guess if use 18MP)
I’ve watched almost all your videos over the last few years😊
Dream camera.
It is nice! (The old SL is great value if you're on a budget. That's still my choice).
Hey Matt, did you meet Chris Frost in this event?
Yes! I recognised his voice before I recognised him :). It was us 2 from YT and the rest were journalists.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComawesome you guys rock in both your unique styles of presentation
And you also can use the Panasonic lenses.
Yes! and Sigma (the DG DN lenses are good)
Beautiful! Can you give us raw files free download next time, ill just buy your presets
Thanks, nice idea. Yes perhaps I can look to do that in the future if the demand is there.
And so, finally, Matt Osborne ascends to the Leica glitterati! Congrats!
Haha thanks! It was nice to be noticed after all these years of Leica reviewing!
Congrats on the invite that’s quite some feat
Struggling to work out why I’d upgrade from the SL2-S to be honest for my wedding work
I don’t need 60mp, I don’t want a flip screen and whilst the AF could be good I really don’t think it’s up to par with the Sony A9 original. Plus at £6k , with no charger ,no battery charger and new cards it’s going to be a £7k + spend…
The SL2-S is in its own league. I wonder what the SL3-S will be like!
Thanks! Yes it was very nice to get invited. Yes the SL2-S is closest to my needs too (as I could use the video for YT) and 24MP is plenty.
Note too, the SL3 is not trying to complete with the SL2-S only the SL2.
Great video, I have the SL. Half way through, my brain exploded...
Ha thanks Ronald. Yes great cameras!
I'm hoping you do a new video like the one ypu did a few months ago comparin ALL SL cameras... (this one was great)
Thanks, I'm writing a blog post that will cover most of the basics - MrLeica.com
That looked like a fun presentation: I've seen worse! Seems like a very nice camera to use indeed.
Thanks, yes I felt very lucky to be invited. Nice camera too!
Servus Matt✌
Lg Anderl
Thanks!
Good question. I think not as I used the extra soft Steal Rim lens which they still sell new and that is much softer than a DR etc.
📸 The stuff that DREAMS are made of & if you don’t have a dream how can you make it come true.
Like a good ROLEX watch a LEICA SL3 is a good investment and wonderful camera to have as a family heirloom to hand down to the next generation of photographer filmmaker.
I now know what I am working towards and saving up for.✌🏻😎🇦🇺
Thanks! Yes Leica cameras are definitely something to treasure and enjoy.
One thing worth mentioning: the prices of secondhand SL2's should come down a bit.
Right! (Although this is going to replace the SL2 NOT the SL2-S FYI)
If this were any other brand I would go “great now the sl2 will be dirt cheap!” I’m sure there will be more people trying to offload them in the near future so I guess I’ll be on the lookout
yes for sure, I think it will be a great time to look at SL2 deals soon
great video Matt, amazing camera , but way over priced, maybe i will buy one in ten years time when i can afford one.........
Thanks. I’m happy with my SL. Those are amazing value.
I must admit, Matt, that you had me at "textured bottom". I want one of those. 😁
I'd have expected some "my wife has" replies to this comment
Ha thanks Chris, I thought that might amuse a few people :)
So basically the auto focus on medium format Fuji GFX100-2 works better than ff SL3…
I've not tried GFX cameras but perhaps. I know the Hassy X2D AF is poor so the SL3 will beat that (having used both)
Sorry, BUT the Defender is the cool car out there ;-) ... It's like using a 'M' ... all manual, no whistles and bells... Like the Leica Defenders ...
Yes they looked great lined up with the logo. Great car for Scotland!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom :-) not only for Scotland ;-) Cheers Axel
Compare with the Nikon Z8. Some similar features- except that the Nikon gives ability for AF with M lenses
Yes I think the Nikon Z cameras offer better AF options but it's improved over previous Leica.
I don't know the Z camera so well but it sounds like they don't make them like they used to. My Nikon F5 would easily double as a hammer :)
Yes 24MP is all I need too. Happy with my SL + film!
Mr Leica, can you do a video on how to stay so leaned and ripped ?
Lol, where did you see me? Eat clean, exercise a lot, no beer :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I saw you in your video you posted. For someone born in 1978 looking good shape!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom what do you eat and how often do you work out
Just realized that the SL looks way more like one unit than the SL3.
SL rocks! I'm not tempted to upgrade to SL3
Nice hotel!
Thanks, yes a nice surprise to be invited!
When did you get a M11? I thought you were cheap?
I am cheap, I have the M10 as I found a great price. Not the M11.
They last forever with M lenses.
looks like another hit from Leica.
Yes they've done a great job I think. Incremental improvements to an already great system.
😊
Thanks!
Just thinking about buying another £50 Olympus OM 2 body to add to the fleet and then THIS dammit! Luckily there is no way on earth I can afford this so safe for now......lol
Haha I'm in the same boat, I'm buying film gear currently too :)
Interesting, SL3 looks actually larger than 601. I must say, it is probably not worth the upgrade IMO. Designwise, I must say original SL is so much cleaner look thank SL2 and SL3
Thanks Paul, yes I’m still happy with my old SL!
Rather have the Defender any day over those phallus symbols
Ha yes it was nice to go off road in the Defenders. What you need in the Highlands for sure!
The new Af len tobig😢
Yes all SL lenses are bigger than M lenses
Always so useful, but it feels like you’ve sold out to the Leica Behemoth.. I loved when you criticized the overly high prices of Leica and offered less expensive alternatives. And valued older generations like the SL 601.
So says the owner of a new Leica 35 Summilux FLE II. The nerve!
Thanks and no don’t worry I’m still the same! Still on my old SL with broken finder cup!
I suppose when you call yourself Mr Leica you better get an invite to play with a new Leica product 😂.
Ha it took 11 years of blogging and more recently YouTubing but yes eventually I got my first invite. It was nice to get acknowledged. :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Well deserved Matt 👏
I'd rather prefer the M11-P over the SL3.
The SL3 is not a pretty tool, it even lacks standards like a built-in GPS-module and has no internal memory. I simply don't want to add another stupid card format for no good reason as the SL3 is still a super slow camera.
The M11-P is the more advanced and thought out camera in that price range.
Thanks, yes M lovers will stick with that format. Both have their place but M's will age better I think.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I love the SL (Typ 601) but the SL2 as well as the SL3 are not a worthy upgrade to it in my opinion.
The SL3 is very limited for what it offers, and only having 1 CFExpress B card slot limits professional use.
@@RealCelticGamer Right, it should have two SD card slots for professional use.
"Textured bottom" Hahahahaha
Haha that tickled me too George. My childlike brain :)
How the other half live 🤣
Ha yes! It was nice to try it for a few days but I'm it's a bit too rich for my blood ha. :)
it's a glorified Panasonic . It should be a lot more cheaper than an m11.
If it helps it feels like a Leica. I own the S5 and SL. Totally different experience..I don’t use the S5
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom how's the pricing in London? is it the same level as the Hasselblad x2D? They basically cost the same in Asia.
Yeah theres a lot of money in those cases.. but Leica gets huge props and hours of free promotion on your channel.. and still you have to hand the camera back.... considering all the people who you have turned on to Leica, seems like the least they could do is give you a camera...
Thanks, very kind. It was nice to just be invited to a Leica event. My first!
original SL looks better
Silly thing too the old SL did not have the leather on the front. My sl2-s’s are like the SL3 and if you use them a lot the leather wears out because my fingernails rub against it
To get the leather replaced costs a fortune
The original SL would not have that issue
Indeed it is the coolest however I would buy the Sl2 over it and over the sl3
I do like the minimal design of the old SL.
I never thought of that. Good point!
Original SL looks more modern, Sl3 is more like an slr
Leica is going towards direction of Canikonpana, lost its soul, it is time to sell all my Leicas
I think Leica purists stick to M bodies (or film)
Absolutely true@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Slower than gfx100ii
Less mp
Same ball park price I guess
Same evf as sl2
Only Leica could call this an upgrade 😳
Thanks, I yes ew all like different systems. Some will prefer Nikon Z, some Hassy, some Fuji. I still like my SL. (If I can get a GFX to review at some point I can give my opinion as to how they compare in real use). I've never used a better finder as the SL2/SL3/SL2S so would be interesting to try a Fuji.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yeah I don’t have any love for any brand as they don’t care about bother us
Leica bringing out a new camera with the same evf is just lazy, yes it was ok but when 9.1mp is available then the sl3 should have that imo
A swing and a miss for me
You should get the gfx100ii it’s evf is beautiful and the only thing I dislike about my gfx100s is the evf isn’t up to standard
