    A big advantage of the Q cameras for me is the weather sealing. I do a lot of outdoor photography, often in terrible weather. Weather sealing is important for shooting in bad weather conditions.

      It sounds like you are a UK photographer.. :) Great point and thanks for your input. I overlooked this advantage as a fair weather photographer. If I get time to do a summary on the MrLeica.com blog I will include this point so thanks. Normally I have film cameras with me too so I tend to go out on the sunny days. (I like contrasty light).

    This is the typical sensible, well-balanced Matt review. One thought: after giving us 7 reasons why you might want to buy each camera, it would have been interesting to hear, say, four (or more or fewer) reasons why you should NOT want to buy each camera... "Things I Hate Most about Using the M" or "Things I Hate Most about Using the Q."

    Nothing beats the q3 for me, as you have mentioned I don’t have to think about what lens to bring. I had 2 Fuji cameras (xt5 and xh2s) and 8 lenses and every trip was just a disaster. Sold everything besides the xh2s and the 33 1.4 as I thought I would use them for videos, and bought the q3 instead. It’s been 3 months since then, and I hadn’t touched my xh2s, nor have I touched the osmo pocket 3, which was unexpected. I LOVE shooting videos on the q3 which, again, totally suprised me, and of course I love shooting photos with it. For me it’s an all in one camera, and If they ever will let us use the usb c for external mic as promised (Though I’ll admit I lost my hope it will ever happened) it will be the perfect camera for me

    I've got both the M11 and Q2 (not 3) for two very different reasons. M11 is for me when I want to take photos and go out and be purposeful. Q2 is for quick shots in a more casual environment.I really enjoy the experience of the M11 for its own reasons. You're right though the Q is definitely a gateway into the M or SL system.

    Great video Matt! I own the SL2-S and I love it because it is half way between M11 and Q3. I tested the M11 and Q3 and I felt in love with the first one... but for my "strong" travel photography probably is better using SL2-S (more versatile) even if I usually use it with M lenses.

    Another excellent video, Matt. Thanks. I gave up my RF Leicas a few years ago because of aging eyes that most often do best with autofocus. Had a Q and CL along with Nikon Z gear. Loved all, but now shoot only with my dynamic THREE: SL2, Q3, and Q2 Monochrom. I'm done!

    Thanks, Matt, I found this very informative. All my current cameras are in the 24-26 Mpx range. Do you find that having 60 Mpx confers any great advantages in your day to day photography? If I had a 60Mpx camera, I think I would rarely need the full resolution, though the 36 Mpx setting would interest me (hopefully on a forthcoming SL3). Have you tried the 36 Mpx setting on the M11, and if so, how does it perform?

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! I like the weight and USB-C but i'd be more that happy with a 24MP sensor. That's all we really need. As we get more MP you need sharper lenses, higher shutter speed and more light. (Lower resolution is better in low light). I would shoot at 36MP I think if I had one. Yes SL3 next!

    Hi Matt
    I’ve actually come across numerous M10 & M11 photographers who went the other way. They were so used to auto focus they found the rangefinders too much hassle
    Also, I traded a Nikon Z9 with 100-400 zoom for a rangefinder, now I’m unable to take sports and action photos and I have to buy all the same gear again
    All the very best

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  10 місяців тому

      Thanks! Yes I think for those coming from AF setups it's good to try a RF before you sell as they wont suit everyone. It's hard to adjust after using full auto cameras (and for sports M cameras are not the correct choice.. unless you are really close to the action).

    I owned the Canon R5, Fuji X100V, and Leica M11. Sold the R5 and X100V and purchased the Q3. I still have about 10K of RF lenses to get rid of but I'm old and retired and decided that the M11 was my sports car and when I want to go out and have fun I grab that with my four lenses. I grab the Q3 for just about everything else and I'm going to be shooting landscapes in the fall and I love that the Q3 is weatherproof to some degree.

    Matt, I've been using the Fujifilm camera (X-T4 and X-H2) with the intent to purchase a Leica camera. I also shoot with a Nikon F3 on film from time to time. I am leaning toward purchasing the M11 rather than the Q3, which would give me a different experience and expand the shooting style. The Q3 is cheaper, but I think it does not quite offer the true Leica experience,, but more of a point-and-shoot with a Leica logo on it. I hope I am making a good decision.

    I don’t make my primary income from photography. When I travel I often find myself in potentially dodgy places after dark (yes even in Japan). I also want to travel light and with as little stress as possible. My Leica M6 will stay, with five of my favourite lenses, but my modern Leica journey is over. Leica has morphed into a lifestyle brand and I choose a different lifestyle. I can spend months travelling in Asia for the price of a M11 or Q3. No piece of gear will ever compensate for curtailed travel opportunities.

    I'm the other way around, I had my M10 first and got some lenses to use with it, I found myself using it in a way that I am requiring a fast street photos and for travel purposes mostly. I think this is for people that uses any studio or amateur work without any video or fast autofocus, then go for the M11. On the other hand sold my M10 and waiting for my Q3, as this will fulfill my needs as compared to changing lenses and other practicality I require to my needs. In summary, M11if you are that person who loves to shoot between lenses and an avid fan of the Leica brand, while getting a Q3, is because you love Leica but you are more practical and just requiring that speed with one lens. (if you own both, ask yourself am I that rich to own these two? or am I just crazy not to choose to what I need, simply because I love the hype ;-))

    I wish they would come out with an interchangeable lens Leica Q, or do an Olympus and come out with a Q50. I use the Q because my eyes are shot for near vision and I have a tremor. I am therefore not physically capable of using an M. Leica SL cameras and lenses are too heavy, and if I bought one it would be gathering dust as I would always opt for the lighter Q.

  • @daviddb4858
    @daviddb4858 10 місяців тому +1

    The problem for me with the Q3 is that one has no other choice with the lens, just the 28mm. For street photography in the city, or for interiors, the 28mm is fine as a general camera. However, where I live (the USA Pacific Northwest) I do outdoors, or landscape photography, where I can need anything from a 16mm to a 600mm lens. If I'm traveling on a ferry to one of the islands and I see orcas breaching (jumping out of the water) the 28mm is no good. Likewise, for photographing the sea stacks off the Pacific coast, I need a longer than 28mm lens, sometimes much longer. But if I'm the temperate rainforest, wider than 28mm is often the way to go. No easy answer for me for a compact, full frame camera with high quality optics for everyday use.

  • @zenjitsuman
    @zenjitsuman 10 місяців тому +1

    Matt while I couldn't get a q3 after 2 plus months of waiting, I must say it is way more practical and cheaper than an M11.
    The EVF at 5.7MP is way more easy to see and not going to go out of alignment like the RF if it gets bumped.
    Also, crucial is the CROPPED focal lengths of 35, 50, 75 and 90mm for most that means a bag of lenses without
    the weight. Also, IBIS, and macro mode the M11 doesn't have,
    Bye the way I bought a Fuji x-H2 with a few lenses for less than the Q3 would cost me. 40mp, same MP EVF , 6 IBIS stops
    Capable of flawless ISO 6400 and best yet battery life of over 700 pics per charge. Add to that the film sims for color
    and B&W and you have a great camera.

    It's so interesting, but I've never really considered the Q cameras. I used to really desire a Sony RX1 with a better viewfinder and some soul, which is exactly what the Q offers! It might be my own bias - I've also never considered an SL, or any other Leica other than an M. I did buy a panasonic LX series bridge camera once because of the 'Leica' optics. They were good, but the camera was another awful computer-with-lens-attachment (what should one expect, from an electronics company with no photographic heritage?).
    Actually, I only own an M11 because it's a rangefinder, and not at all because it's a Leica. I bought my first M8 because I couldn't find any Epson RD1's (plus the M8 crop made more sense). I don't care at all about the brand, and there are aspects of it which I positively dislike (the manufacture of hunting optics, for instance). It does seem that the Q and SL have really great image quality and a lovely user experience - for which Leica continually deserve considerable credit.
    As for the colour difference, I'm interested to see the M11 is more magenta: I find my M11 to also have a green tint, but Lightroom reads the WB with a near +20 magenta tint, which largely compensates for it.

    My newest photography interest is concert photography. From my experience so far, this requires good and fast autofocus in low light situations with a camera with as much dynamic range as possible and very good high ISO performance, because I need the shutter to be at least 1/125 or faster to avoid motion blur. Also, because I only shoot in small crowded venues, I really want as small a kit as possible.
    The Q3 just seems like the obvious choice for this (if I could afford it), but so far, I'm making due with a very different but small and affordable Micro43 kit.
    A benefit for me using micro43 is that with a Leica M to MFT adapter, I can use my old Leica and Voigtländer M lenses on a digital camera when doing slower styles of photography - a first for me, since I have been using DSLR cameras for my digital photography until now.

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 10 місяців тому +1

      I shoot stage performances (although not with a Leica because I need to keep both my kidneys) so we probably have a lot in common in terms of problems/solutions. A couple of things I think you might want to ask Matt: (1) Is the Q's autofocus effective in really low light and in difficult performance conditions such as strong backlighting or lights in the frame? (2) Since you're in crowded venues, you might want a quiet camera -- how do the Q and M compare for noise level when using mechanical shutter? (since we learned in Matt's most recent video that the M11's electronic shutter can skew objects moving at even leisurely speeds.)

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

      Nice! I started my Leica journey with MFT too! I had a Lumix G1 (the first MFT body I think) + 40 1.4 Voigtlander. That gave me a taste of these lenses. Then I bought a Bessa R3A film camera then Leica M2 or 3 I forget which came first, to use the lens and then the Leica M9. I've never looked back! I still have MFT bodies (see Q vs MFT video) ..and they are also good if you need more range with the 2x crop added to "normal" FF lenses. (and more depth in focus at any given F stop, so you shoot at f1.4 for low light but get f2.8 depth which probably helps you.

The Q3 gives a more APO-ish look. Not classic glowy vintage Leica look. The Q3 has image stabilization and the lens is one (fully optimized) with the camera. This results in more often crispier and extreme sharp images. Owning both. I can tell you that's the real difference image wise😉👍🏼

Now I know, I have heard the old Leicas are tanks and have been war cameras. Big difference those cameras were film cameras, only electronic was the light meter.
