The keyboardist is Rick Wright, the "quiet one", I'm tickled that you favor him. PF wouldn't have been PF without his keyboards and compositions. Rick wrote this song when they were touring a lot, and he wondered how he would feel if he had to die so young - plane crash, car accident, who knows, anything could happen. How would a young person feel to have to die with their life unfulfilled? So there are no lyrics, just the wordless emotions of a person as she dies - denial, anger, despair, and then a gradual acceptance until she finally slips away. It is incredibly beautiful, and a fine example of what Rick brought to the band.
The studio version with Clare Torry is the definitive version, but you can’t beat seeing it performed live and seeing the passion that the singers bring to it. For something a little different you could try ‘Keep Talking’ from Pulse! Thank you for your warm and heartfelt reactions!
The first time I saw this gig on video it absolutely changed my life. To this day, I've still never seen anything like it. RIP Claudia, gone but never forgotten.
You must check out the album version. Clare Torry was just given the chords and a few ideas (the five stages of death) and she improvised the whole thing in two and a half takes!!
and this is a totally differenrt performance in very different circumstances. I cant understand why you Torry snobs cant help but knock anything else that isnt the original. Its becoming boring beyond measure. Why are you lot incapable of just appreciating a performance for what it is instead of having to slag it off????
@@stevem-h3562 It's not a case of "listen only to the original only", it's simply the best. This is one of the few Pink Floyd songs that the album version is the best, that there isn't a live version that is better. Sorry, it takes 3 to do the job of one in this one. Like having a great hamburger- it's good, but steak beats it every time. This song relies on the mood and technique of the singer more than many others. In this case, it just feels "off", nonorganic.
They did not tell her about five stages of death. They simply told her to improvise, and after a while of feeling totally lost about what they wanted, Dave finally told her to think about death. She did her thing and left shaking her head and thinking this would never see the light of day. And the rest as they say, is history.
i was at that concert, in fact i went twice that week. best concert i've ever been too. its great to see you discovering bands ive loved all my life, im also a led zeppelin fan, and loving your reactions. Thank you for your time :) i look forward your next reaction
I saw this perfomed live on the previous tour ( A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour ) 3 different backing vocalist , equally as beautiful ) , enjoy your Pink Floyd journey
That's a pedal steel guitar that David was playing. He also plays the guitar solo at the end of High Hope's with that instrument. They also do an all instrumental song called "One of These Days" where David really goes crazy on the pedal steel! Your next song should be the 1988 live version of "On the Turning Away". The backup vocalists in that concert tour are also amazing!!
One of the most unique and beautiful pieces of music ever. It makes me weep when I hear it, EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now you MUST do the finale to that concert, 'Run Like Hell', It will be the most explosive and spectacular thing you've ever seen.
Rick Wright had this to say: "I didn't, when I wrote it, think, 'This is all about death,' cos I don't think I would have written that chord structure. I get so excited when I hear Clare singing. For me, it's not necessarily death. I hear terror and fear and huge emotion, in the middle bit especially, and the way the voice blends with the band. The way it was mixed helps." The book about the stages of death was very new at the time and would not have been an inspiration. To me it sounds way more like a simple struggle against death and acceptance of it eventually.
I was one of the those lucky ones who were there. Remember it like it was yesterday- i can’t believe it was 30 years ago this year. An incredible experience and best concert i have ever or will ever go to
I was not one of the fortunate few to be at Earl's Court when the P.U.L.S.E. DVD was recorded, but I did attend the Edmonton, Alberta, Canada concert during the 1994 Division Bell tour. During my 64 years on this planet, I have seen 141 bands LIVE (that have released at least one album), but none have ever come anywhere close to Pink Floyd. Truly masters at their craft.
Vocalists were Sam Browne, Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine in that order. David's instrument was a pedal steel guitar, a descendant of a lap steel guitar or slide guitar. It started off as a Hawaiian technique of playing a normal guitar using a slide or 'steel', then evolved to sit in the player's lap, then acquired legs and pedals to change the pitch. I love David's playing on that.
Essa musica representa os três estágios da morte num cenário terminal. 1-A indignação e revolta, 2-A negociação 3-A aceitação. Uma obra de arte. Não sei como alguém pôde ter criado isso! Abraços do Brasil.
Another Pink Floyd song you may like to do a reaction for is from their Pulse concert called Run Like Hell ...its like walking in the sunshine just a beautiful musical work of art
You still have many "mind-blowers" to go from this seminal band! Anything dfrom (like this song was) "Dark side of the moon" or "The Wall" is pretty much GOLD, and other, deeper fans can give you more recommendations! Wonderful reaction to this passionate powerhouse!
This whole concert from 1994 is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Coming back to life is a good one with David… also check out Emerson Lake and Palmer Trilogy ✌🏼❤️ from California….
I recommend "Run like hell" . This is more a rock song. What David Gilmour does with his guitar at the beginning of the song is alien-like. And the singing between him and the young bassist is fascinating. And the song "Wish you were here". In this song David has an amazing duet with his....no, i don't spoiler. Both songs from the Pulse Tour. Thanks for your great reactions.
Yes, to second, third... if you are looking for your next PF reaction from this concert, Run Like Hell is it. then, I usually recommend checking out MONEY, Shine on You Crazy Diamond parts I-IX, DOGS and Echoes. I could go on but at this point, you could still listen to 20 other songs and finally find your favorite. SO many brilliant songs
I am so happy that you have been come a floydian and that's not such a bad thing as you will continue on a journey a spiritual emotional rollercoaster ride that will inbred in your soul for ever And to me David Gilmore has his guitar strings attached to his soul
As a fan of Pink Floyd since 68 and somebody who has everything they ever recorded on vinyl I cannot understand why so many people are enamored by the Pulse concert. I had the opportunity to attend five of their concerts and the pulse does not represent what the band was prior. It can't compare except for who have no clue. So I'll listen to Pink Floyd reactions from you when you quit doing the Pulse concert. After all the great music was produced a couple decades earlier before all the attitudes and Division. You should do Time followed by Great Gig. The two go together. But to get the real experience you need to listen to their albums from beginning to end.
David is playing a „steel lap“ on this (like in the second High Hopes Solo!). Next: „Shine on you crazy diamond“ or „Keep Talking“ (where David plays guitar through his mouth!)
Like everyone said. Claire Torry on Dark Side of the Moon. I saw the live version during this tour. The lady were great, and it sounded amazing. But Claire was the best!
At around 7:45 in your video you say: "so I will let you guys choose which one you want me to react to next". I suggest a track that highlights the backing singers as much as David's voice and guitar, in addition to a few surprises. Pink Floyd - "Keep Talking" PULSE Remastered 2019
There is a studio version of a song called keep talking that I know you will appreciate an amazing guitar performance in it within that the song, what do you want for me is all tied up together amazing guitar performance
This song is great visually but is much better aurally on the studio album version. Next Pink Floyd song you would love to hear is Careful With That Axe Eugene from The Pompeii concert. Thanks for all your hard work 🙏
When Claire Torrey asked what she should be doing, she was told to "sing as if she were an instrument herself."[6] Torry performed two complete takes, the second more emotional than the first, but when David Gilmour asked for a third take she stopped halfway through, feeling that she was becoming repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes.
Love most Pink Floyd songs. But if I was forced to choose two favourites it will be: Shine on you crazy diamond (parts 1-5) - the studio version and On the turning away - the live version. You cannot go wrong with these performances to react to.
If you want something different in this concert, do the closing song Run Like Hell....they are having a blast doing this one ....and as always with PF.....you never know what your going to get ....it's awesome
Rick Wright, Pink Floyd keyboardist, asked Durga Mcbroom, a background singer for Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing this song at his funeral. She did that too, as she confirmed to me personally. But there is still the unconfirmed rumor that she was accompanied on the piano by John Lord
Run like Hell next from Pulse concert. BUT, you should really listen to the whole Wall album first (a concept album) and then watch the1982 Wall movie. It is an AMAZING movie and will help you understand the story of the album.
It's about poverty and if we as human beings don't reach out and do our part to help, the cycle will continue... The King, Elvis sure did MORE than his part; especially living such a short life 👏
They have a cover band that tour's around the world I was able too see them if you close your eyes you couldn't tell the difference. It's not too many times a band show case back up Singer like this. It saddens me that people just discovering Pink Floyd will never get to see them live, it is an experience. Pink Floyd's music was created to listen to the entire album at one time. The songs on the album blend together. After you listen to more of the songs, be sure to listen to an entire album, in order. The album takes on a whole new meaning from the individual songs.
wish you were hear. my favourite. reminds me of my departed uncle. we're just 2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowl. year after year. that was us 2. now there's only me. 😢

I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call god. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. The speaking at the start was recorded at Apple records with various employees answering a list of questions next to a small recording machine. The question was…“Are You afraid Of Dying? This one was an elderly gentleman who was a janitor in the place. Roger thought it would fit in the song at the beginning so there it is. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. Sam Brown and the girls did a good job here, BUT you REALLY need to listen to the album version. Trust me your ears will bless you! Claire Torrey is extraordinary, she will sear your soul!
Whilst a great live version, this is one of the very few Pink Floyd tracks where you need to listen to the studio version, where a 25 year old Clare Torry improvised the whole thing with minimal briefing in just 2 1/2 takes. It's never been bettered or equalled. You need to see this video where Clare describes the whole thing in her typically English, self-deprecating way. ua-cam.com/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/v-deo.htmlsi=pBnAMNHL1o46rFcY .I think she was paid a session fee of £30 for it, and that was it, but in later years she was given co-writing credits and received the sizable royalties she so deserved.
@@fifidurand7421 - OK, point taken! All PF music is brilliant on the studio versions, but some of the tracks performed live, primarily at Pulse 1994, Knebworth 1990 and Gdansk 2006, are equally brilliant, and IMHO Comfortably Numb from Pulse is the definitive version. However, the performance of The Great Gig by Clare Torry on the studio version has never been equalled, not even by Clare herself during her rare (and brilliant) live performances, and that is what I was trying to say!.
I have been to 4 of their concerts. I love the original Clare Torry version best. Still, if you wanna see the best version of this live, I would have to say the 1988 World Tour filmed for Delicate Sound of Thunder has the best three female vocalists: ua-cam.com/video/Ke9y_yfwJtg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared This song is about death, and you can hear her emotions as she goes through the stages of death. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
not only dark side was first played live for a long time and then recorded in the studio, but pink floyd is more than just pulse....i agree with you dark side and especially wish you were here must be listen to in studio version
Blah blah blah, Claire Torry. These three ladies performed this in one take., Live! No rerecording, remastering. These three ladies are the Supreme Performance of this song. They knocked it out of the park.
Why do people recommend this song without specifying the album version? There’s nothing wrong with this but first listen should be the original. Literally one of the great solo vocal performances on a rock album ever.
Pink Floyd is for the ADVANCED music listener. 👍👍👍😎

Sam Brown and the girls did a good job here, BUT you REALLY need to listen to the album version. Trust me your ears will bless you! Claire Torrey is extraordinary, she will sear your soul!
The instrument you are referring to is a lap steel guitar.
Olavity. That instrument is a pedal steel guitar.
pink floyd dogs is probably the greatest song ever recorded pigs is good too but every floyd person must start with pink floyd time album version
React... WISH YOU WERE HERE, TIME, ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL,BRAIN DAMAGE/ECLIPSE, RUN LIKE HELL live Pulse👍👍
"of the very few Pink Floyd tracks where you need to listen to the studio version"...very few pf songs???...
❤❤❤
I hope to see your reaction for “now and then” the last song by the beatles and “Hotel California” by eagles
David played slide guitar
you should have asked your followers what version to do. the studio version from Dark Side of The Moon
Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
ascolta Vasco Rossi - C'è Chi Dice No (Live at Modena Park 2017.
Ola, have you listened to the album version yet?
How about early Pink Floyd try the Nile song
Not the live version. Pink Floyd was a studio band.
not only dark side was first played live for a long time and then recorded in the studio, but pink floyd is more than just pulse....i agree with you dark side and especially wish you were here must be listen to in studio version
Blah blah blah, Claire Torry. These three ladies performed this in one take., Live! No rerecording, remastering. These three ladies are the Supreme Performance of this song. They knocked it out of the park.
Since you are such a fan of the keyboarder Richard Wright, you will probably be sad to hear that he already died in 2008 in London.😢
Why do people recommend this song without specifying the album version? There’s nothing wrong with this but first listen should be the original. Literally one of the great solo vocal performances on a rock album ever.
Wow, I didn't know you owned UA-cam and were the final arbiter of what people should and shouldn't listen to 😂
😯
Olá do Brasil, ouça a música TIME versão remasterizada.
That blonde should get an award of some sort for that performance. Some of awards they give out are a joke compared to that.
The genius of pink Floyd death as an orgasm
