I was at my Grandfather's bed side when he passed away. As I left the hospital this was the first song on the radio as I drove home. Had to pull over to let the tears flow. It took me about 6 months to be able to hear this song without crying.

After my dad passed, the first song on the radio I heard was Three Little Birds. "Don't worry about a thing, cause every little thing gonna be alright." Not sure how I kept my composure. I didn't really.

@@Buddha-of8fk It can be a rough listen sometimes, no doubt. Shine On is the one that the song for me that brings memories of lost ones and I have to be in the right head space before I can press play on that one. Whatever the song, there’s no doubt PF taps into your emotions in a way very few, if any, artists are able to.

The lyrics are in part a lament for the loss of an original band member, Syd Barrett who succumbed to a severe mental problem and had to leave the band. Hence the lyrics asking if you could tell the difference between heaven and hell, a green field from a cold steel rail, a smile from a veil, etc. Syd became disconnected from reality and David and the others had known him since childhood so the loss to mental illness was painful to watch. But the real lament is the multi part song titled "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" which really gets into Syd's descent into madness. The studio version is the best, and the Pulse version is very good, but one of the most moving is David and Richard playing it in Gdansk Poland, just before Richard passed away:
ua-cam.com/video/kqXD5NKj4d4/v-deo.html (Shine On You Crazy Diamond - David Gilmour live @ Gdansk 2006) Here David gives a moving vocal rendering and you get to see what on the album is described the "glass harp" - 3 guys playing chords with wine glasses, and Richard on the synth is amazing.

The songs is about one of the founders of the band, Syd Barrett who had a bad trip and his detachment from reality, both physically and emotionally and became a shell of his former self - its a sort of "I wish you were still here with us to enjoy and share in our success, we miss you terribly"

This song actually ISN'T about Syd specifically, although many, like yourself, assume it is. That song would be (S)hine on (Y)ou Crazy (D)iamond.
This song instead describes beautifully the sense of isolation and alienation we all feel at times from society as a whole and from one another individually.

@@z-man2343 The members of Pink Floyd have already stated the song was written about Syd... But, they tried to make it not sound too specific so that others could have their own interpretation of the song. So you're kinda right about it not being specifically about him, but he was what was on Roger's mind when he wrote it. And until I actually heard band members state it was about Syd, I had never assumed it was about him, I actually assumed it was about an old love interest or something to do with Roger's father.

I think magical is a good word when describing Pink Floyd. Every time I listen to their incredible songs (and their are so many), I'm amazed at how it is even possible to consistently make such great music. Wish You Were Here is about the founding member of the band Syd Barrett, who had a heavy use of mind altering drugs commonly used by young people in the 1960's. He lost his ability to play music, and eventually lost all sense of reality. Syd is also referred to in another song by Pink Floyd called Shine On You Crazy Diamond in the lyrics "now there is a look in your eye, like black holes in the sky." I think the fish bowl reference in the song describes not only Syd, but others in general.

One of my absolute videos from them is the song "Echoes" live in the ruins of the Pompej Theater. 1972 a masterpeace and they are so young.

I neve appreciated Pink Floyd. Then, one day, it happened. I don't know why, I simply started to feel their music echoing in my soul.

Pink Floyd has a great many songs which affect many people very emotionally, David is perhaps the most emotional guitarist ever, The skill of their words often by Roger Waters who left before these concerts, Bass player and singer but foremost songwriter.

The song "Echoes" was Richard's masterpiece. I recommend his final performance of the song from Gdansk.

Richard Wright actually sang lead or shared lead vocals on a few Pink Floyd songs. Probably one of the earliest ones from the 1960s is "Paint Box," about someone in a bad relationship and very authentic relationships; it's definitely worth checking out! Richard Wright also shares lead vocals on "Time," and his voice blends very well with David Gilmour's (you can see the switch in live versions)!
