The lyrics are in part a lament for the loss of an original band member, Syd Barrett who succumbed to a severe mental problem and had to leave the band. Hence the lyrics asking if you could tell the difference between heaven and hell, a green field from a cold steel rail, a smile from a veil, etc. Syd became disconnected from reality and David and the others had known him since childhood so the loss to mental illness was painful to watch. But the real lament is the multi part song titled "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" which really gets into Syd's descent into madness. The studio version is the best, and the Pulse version is very good, but one of the most moving is David and Richard playing it in Gdansk Poland, just before Richard passed away:
ua-cam.com/video/kqXD5NKj4d4/v-deo.html (Shine On You Crazy Diamond - David Gilmour live @ Gdansk 2006) Here David gives a moving vocal rendering and you get to see what on the album is described the "glass harp" - 3 guys playing chords with wine glasses, and Richard on the synth is amazing.

The songs is about one of the founders of the band, Syd Barrett who had a bad trip and his detachment from reality, both physically and emotionally and became a shell of his former self - its a sort of "I wish you were still here with us to enjoy and share in our success, we miss you terribly"

This song actually ISN'T about Syd specifically, although many, like yourself, assume it is. That song would be (S)hine on (Y)ou Crazy (D)iamond.
This song instead describes beautifully the sense of isolation and alienation we all feel at times from society as a whole and from one another individually.

@@z-man2343 The members of Pink Floyd have already stated the song was written about Syd... But, they tried to make it not sound too specific so that others could have their own interpretation of the song. So you're kinda right about it not being specifically about him, but he was what was on Roger's mind when he wrote it. And until I actually heard band members state it was about Syd, I had never assumed it was about him, I actually assumed it was about an old love interest or something to do with Roger's father.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band and David Gilmour, a legend, is my favorite guitarist. My favorite song is Comfortably Numb. You mentioned the lighting……during the Pulse tour Floyd had to perform in open air venues such as football/baseball stadiums due to the lasers. They also had 3 sets of trucks for all of the staging equipment. One truck would be at an upcoming show setting up because it would take 2 days to set up.
Also, David Gilmour played a black Fender Stratocaster for most of his illustrious career. Several years ago it was auctioned off for $3+ million.

Probably one of the earliest ones from the 1960s is "Paint Box," about someone in a bad relationship and very authentic relationships; it's definitely worth checking out! The song was written by Gilmour and Roger Watters, and it had different meanings for each. For Gilmour, it had more to do with Syd Barrett, who was an original member of Floyd who more or less was removed from the band due to erratic behavior. For Watters, it was more about himself.

Since you like Richard so much, I highly recommend one of his own songs:
"David Gilmour & Richard Wright - Breakthrough"
It's another live performance, with Richard on lead vocals, and it's just incredible.

Every reactor gets the same look of bliss and awe! If you love Rick see the David Gilmour at Gdańsk and Echoes - last time it was ever played and the musical dialogue between David and Rick is very special as they riff off each other. In fact that whole concert is extraordinary.

If you really like Richard wright you need to check out the song David Gilmour wrote for him called "A Boat Lies Waiting". It's a tribute to Richard and it even has David Gilmour's newborn son recorded during the beginning of the song with a little cry! He wrote the music and his wife Polly came up with the lyrics. It's called "a boat lies waiting" because Richard loved nothing more than to be on his sailboat near Greece when ever he could!

I'm 72, in my life, no band has pulled more emotion out of more people on this planet then Pink Floyd. Somehow they reach into all of us and strike a cord deep with in us. How lucky we have been to live during these times.

I think magical is a good word when describing Pink Floyd. Every time I listen to their incredible songs (and their are so many), I'm amazed at how it is even possible to consistently make such great music. Wish You Were Here is about the founding member of the band Syd Barrett, who had a heavy use of mind altering drugs commonly used by young people in the 1960's. He lost his ability to play music, and eventually lost all sense of reality. Syd is also referred to in another song by Pink Floyd called Shine On You Crazy Diamond in the lyrics "now there is a look in your eye, like black holes in the sky." I think the fish bowl reference in the song describes not only Syd, but others in general.

Pink Floyd has a great many songs which affect many people very emotionally, David is perhaps the most emotional guitarist ever, The skill of their words often by Roger Waters who left before these concerts, Bass player and singer but foremost songwriter.

Like Pink Floyd and this classic, legendary song, you are just beautiful. Not just on the outside obviously but also on the inside where it truly, in the end, only counts. Subscribed and liked. Keep it up darlin'. Much love and respect from deep in the ❤ of Texas.
P.S. From an almost forty year long Floyd fan I think you should trust me on this when I say you should definitely do the studio version of Time, which I think every human being alive really should listen to, before they listen to literally anything else. After that, whenever you like but soon, you should check out "Sorrow" live from Pulse.
So go in joy and then go enjoy both, because I know you will. Peace

1:18 / 1:26 - those "noises" are a little thing called "radio"[0] -- to quote Wikipedia, «The opening bars of "Wish You Were Here" were recorded from Gilmour's car radio, with somebody turning the dial (the classical music heard is the finale of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony).»
[0] which I fully expect you've heard of, I'm just putting it in quotes to be silly -- though it is such a different experience now than it once was -- which you may not have experienced.
