A must listen is the original recording by Claire Torry on the album The Dark Side of the Moon.
Even better to hear it with the proceeding track "Time" these two together life & death will knock your socks off!

I used to listen to the studio version for years and loved it. Today is the first time hearing this live version and quite honestly to me there is more power and soul in this version with these three singers. Just my opinion off course.

The first version was improvised on the album by Clare Torrey. In the concerts, the three background singers usually took it in turns (as in this performance), generally sticking fairly close to the original but not exactly copying it. It was Sam Brown, Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine in this performance.

That there is Sam Brown. She had a mega hit in the 80s with a song called 'Stop'. Check it out.
But you need to hear the original with Clare Tory.....she does all the vocals....Brilliant 👏

Hi, Lisa- greetings from Canada. You'll find that OGs like me will usually have the answers to your questions. The ladies were in order Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, and Claudia Fontaine (R.i.P.2018). On the record it was one sublime woman, Clare Torry on her second, but first real, take who nailed it to become a thing of joy forever. Peace and be safe.

A wonderful example of how you can put emotion into vocals and music without ever saying a word. It's not often that backup and session singers get a chance to shine like this.

Originally, The Great Gig in the Sky was an innocuous track that was supposed to be used to fill the void ending the side A. In the first demos, a passage from the Bible was read over the piano instrumental, then this was communications from NASA astronauts on mission. With the end result unsatisfying the band members, Alan Parsons enlisted the help of Clare Torry, a studio singer. They ask her to provide them with a vocal improvisation with the only indication of thinking about death and the fear it inspires.

Claire Torrey got a writing credit for her part in this song after many years. Believe she received undisclosed (probably a very big cheque) back royalties after being paid originally a session singer's fee of thirty pounds. Sam Brown ,singing here, very big in the world of ukuleles. Worth finding her on UA-cam.

I'm surprised that no one has suggested "On the turning away" remastered 2019. Live performance at Nassau coliseum, NY 1988 Delicate Sound of Thunder tour. This is one of the few times a back up singer has actually brought me tears. Perfect timing of the vocal crescendo matching David Gilmore's guitar crescendo. If this song doesn't motivate people to start donating time and money to helping those less fortunate than themselves THEN NOTHING will because their hearts have already turned away.

Lots of people say the original Claire Torry version on DSotM is best.
I love both versions - Claire's for the fact that she made it up as she went along for the album and it sounds brilliant, and this one because you can see the sheer passion of the three ladies - plus they had to do it live.

Listen to the original Tori version. The song was written by Richard Wright, the keyboard player, the only song attributed to him by the "band" (Roger Waters dispute). I'm a big believer that without Richard Wright and his harmonious relationship with David Gilmour's soulful guitar and Nick Mason's dreamy drums, the band wouldn't have existed .

I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

If you liked this, to the other good suggestions listed here, I'd add 'Sorrow,' from the '94 Pulse Tour that others have suggested great songs from. I had the good fortune to see them live many times, including that tour, and I do think it was their best. But in addition to that, I'd add one by the one composing partner in Pink Floyd who left the band and went solo. He still performs lots of their songs too, and one is 'Time,' which many people do as the studio version. That version is fantastic, but seeing it live does add something too. ua-cam.com/video/rePdcdLQ_mk/v-deo.html

great reaction. not really improvising. all three are trying to imitate the original Claire Torry--they tried i'll give em that and its great but you should really hear the studio version even if you don't react to it. Alan Parsons was an engineer at Abbey Road studio (PF was recording the same time as Beatles with Sgt Pepper btw). They brought her in and she was surprised there were no words, they really didnt have a plan. She did one take and threw in a few yeh baby's...and they said no words, make yourself sound like an instrument. She did one more take and left and never heard a word about it until she heard it on the album... rest is history lol! Song is about dying, being mad, sad, and coming to grip with it.
