I have been bulletjournaling for a few years now, also using super simple layouts, no colours or drawings. In the beginning, I also used a ruler, but over time I have changed to hand-drawing lines. Yes, they are a bit wonky, but overall, I like them much better. When you use a ruler, you put yourself up for perfectionism and beating yourself up over a crooked line here and there.

I started bullet journalling in January and it has been life changing. Partly because it keeps me organised, but also I find it to be a meditative practice - starting each day by putting pen to paper and really considering what I need to do, and what I have done, has made me a happier and calmer person (and that's coming from someone who's suffered with anxiety for years)

Thank you for this. I'm thinking about trying this. I have ADD, so I am incredibly scattered. I'm forgetting appointments, important commitments, etc. I really think that writing them down will help. I'm expecting to have a lot of challenges with it, but I also know that the brain creates anxiety when it senses that something is different. Different=a threat to survival to the sub-conscious mind.

I started out in the "trying to make it perfect the first time" trap. Once I realized that the format was always going to be fluid and constantly changing/improving and I gave myself permission to mess up, things got easier. Next I watched a TON of videos on bullet journaling to collect ideas. I found a lot of what people were doing was way too complex. I don't have 1/2 a day to spend setting up my journal for the week. For me it was wasteful to have to template out multiple pages a week in setup. It had to be simple, and tailored to my needs. And for me I was looking to fit it in a pocket size journal because I knew I wouldn't carry anything bigger. I also found I wasn't interested in certain things people were doing, but maybe something I saw gave me inspiration for finding a more "me" way to do something. I took those ideas and put them together for a simple daily template that only consisted of drawing 4 small lines and tracked what I needed. In the end thought, the biggest issues (for me) wasn't the page format. It's the lack of search, being forced into a linear format (you cant insert a page), lack of copy/paste or the ability to move something from one page to another, which leads to forgetting about stuff. For me it just didn't work. I do still journal, but not for daily tasks, It's more of just a simple bullet point brain dump of things I have to do but mostly things I did. That's what works for me. YMMV.

    • @jcepri
      @jcepri 3 роки тому

Good points. I'm thinking about trying this, but I don't like that you can't search for things. I am constantly forgetting things (I have ADD). I read that keeping a handwritten notebook of tasks and appts. tends to encode them in memory longer and subconsciously sets you up for looking for opportunities to move your tasks/goals down the field. I've tried every phone app on the planet. Todoist is the best one IMO, but I completely forget to open it. If it's out of sight, it doesn't exist. I'm at my wit's end, so I'm going to try this.

No more running around everywhere, searching through piles of paper, everything I need is in my book! So simple! I tried bullet journaling for 4 times and now I have it one year and it is really awesome for me. At the beginning (of the final time) I used it mainly for my mental health. So my daily tasks were "getting out of bed" and "shower". At the end of each day I wrote down 3 positive things I could came up with. After a short time I added up to 3 simple tasks and tracking my sleep and mood over all. Since then I changed a lot and I am still trying different things out. I love my bujo and it helps me getting through my days and my life in general

"bullet journaling" works for me when I have regularly scheduled tasks, is habits (cleaning, reading my Bible, study, meditation as examples) in a digital app, tusk has been working really well for me so far.
My "bullet journal" is a hybrid between a sketchbook (for one, it's is literally a sketchbook, A4 in size) and a bullet journal. I have a monthly spread, future log, I have goal pages, monthly-memory pages, I have weekly/ daily -whatever they are- that I use for tasks. Sometimes I dedicate pages to a topic, like I have one set up as a brain dump of what I need to remember to talk about when I go to the doctors... some people have done packing lists or shopping lists... Certain school notes... Thinking I need to figure out a different system... Cause it takes up a lot of space!!
But, I use it like a visual diary as well. Documenting moments by drawing a little picture and writing about it.
Index? Absolutely forget it. When I reach the last few pages I go back and see if there's anything I'd ever actually want to reference specifically... But it hasn't happened.

I only use my bullet journal for actual journaling these days. It just didn't work for me as a planner. I have multiple projects for both work and home going on and I found Google Keep very handy for various to-do's and project checklists. What I like best about digital planning is that I can share the plan with other people. Remodel checklist and grocery list with my partner, workout calendar with my roommate, etc. The pen and paper aspect is only really valuable to me when I'm trying to work out a problem or when I'm processing feelings. So, I honor that and reserve the journal for just those things.

I started bullet journaling about four years ago and immediately got hooked. In the beginning i tried to make my spreads colorful and pretty, but I soon found out that I didn‘t have the time for that. Now I just list down everything I have to do that day. I write out twelve monthly logs at the beginning and therefore don‘t need a future log. Whenever a task comes to mind, I write it down in the corresponding month. The current month also functions as a brain dump. Everyday I check my monthly log and see whether there is anything on it that I could realistically do on the current day. This system has served me incredibly well as it adapts to whatever I need that day (I.e. a loose to-do-list, time log or just a journal entry for off-days) and since I have tiny handwriting, I can easily fit two years into one Leuchtturm1917.

I've used a planner for 40 years and being retired, in pandemic Idaho, I figured what the heck. Turns out I like drawing lines and boxes for myself. My planners always had blank pages, so I was already making "collections" for Sch A items (mostly medical & contributions) books read, dog expenses, etc. As an avocational musician, I didn't keep a regular practice journal but now, I've adapted the "habit tracker" concept for that purpose. This music tracker/log is kept in a separate notebook because I want to keep a record for as long as I'm able to play. Finally, I might go back to my favorite planner for 2022, "The Good Busy Planner" mainly because of its larger pages, but the Music Tracker/Log is a keeper.

I have been bullet journaling for well over 3 years (I use a Muji spiral bound dot notebook; one has lasted me 3 years and I only just started a new one this year). As much as I would also love to make them little works of art, the sooner I got away from the *aesthetic* of bullet journaling (though I do use some fancy Japanese stickers you can rub on to pages to fancy them up a little), the better I was able to see it for what it is- a tool I 100% control. Every month I can focus on something different, sometime I only use 2 pages, sometimes I want to add more (like if I am planning a trip). Sometime I have used them to track my mood (ex- I was feeling really down at one point so when I started actual tracking my moods, I saw how just a few 'off' days could really throw off a whole month; that allowed me to better face my low points and put them in a better, larger context).

Great Video - As always. Yes, Journaling has been a game changer for me. I watched your Vlog as I am currently reviewing my journaling to see if I can make it simpler and not a time eater.
This is what works for me. It might not suite others. But, the golden rule is there are no rules.
As you said at the beginning Calendar Apps and a Task managers like To-Doist, or Google Tasks really take the pressure off. e.g. Once the Birthdays are in a Calendar they will repeat every year and they can be set to give a warning alert how ever many days ahead. The advantage of these two tools is stuff can be added and forgotten about. The pressure is off, they will do the prompting. Each day the Tasks and Events can be transposed into the Journal, but please, keep them separate under two headings. Mixing them up with different carets makes it complicated for viewing.
Next off Journals are great for changing habits, getting rid of those which we find unwanted and encouraging. So have a heading for 'Intentions' Never have more than three on any day and two is better. These are things we want to keep in mind for that day. Like 'Use the exercise bike', 'Drink more water'. 'Phone a friend I haven't contacted in a while'. Habit changing is, of course, a key concept in your Vlogs.
Have a 'Notes' Section. This is useful for jotting down information from phone calls or things that need to be remembered on the go, say from browsing or conversations. Again
Yes, your buckets. Task Managers and Calendars will do most of the stuff you list on a daily basis. So I let them do the heavy lifting. However the 'buckets' are very good for intentions. Have a page for intentions and once a month select one or two that seem more important and these go into the Weekly bucket. Each day one or two of the weekly intentions (Bucket) are selected. This idea is taken from the sort of Apps used by 'executives' who want to increase good habits and patterns and decrease the ones which are either no longer needed, or wanted.
Lastly a section for 'Reflections. At the end of each day write a few lines about the day, what was good and what was less constructive. This material feeds back into the 'Intentions Bucket' Some people expand their reflections up into a page or more like a personal log. This is great to feel ones way through personal and interpersonal issues. Others find one or two lines sufficient. keep it as a separate section. It is simpler to extract the information at the end of the day to store in whatever place is appropriate, contacts, calendar tasks or a note organising app like Samsung notes (superb) or Google Keep (still an easy one to use).
Apologies for writing an essay on your Vlog. You are one of my go to vlogers, though I don't get here as much as I would like... I've added it to my intentions list. ;)
I do hope this is of use to someone. Be well.
    My page:
    Intentions
    Calendar / Appointments
    Tasks
    Notes
    Reflection
    All done on an A5 pad (6" x 8 1/4")
    Thanks for a superb vlog.

When I first started ...I used a bullet journal notebook and tried setting it up aesthetically using lots of different colours and trying to write everything thing out without making a single spelling mistake !, IMPOSSIBLE it was nether calming, less stressful or helping me to get more organised. So the first thing I did was to start writing in pencil so I can concentrate on the tasks not messing up a another page spread.
And as an artist the reason I wished to get organised and spend my time making more art this wasn’t happening when I was spending more time trying to create aesthetic looking designs in the book instead of for myself.
These days I keep it super easy I used any notebook I find and used mainly weekly pages written day by day with 3-4 tasks daily which I tick ,cross or move as needed I also have collection pages - notes on inspiration, business branding, product and illustration ideas , materials ,websites and learning skills pages etc .Notes are more important to me than tracking habits I don’t use trackers

Great explanation on bullet journaling! I've tried to get into it a few times in the past but couldn't keep up because the bujo community makes it seem that it should be a complicated, artistic affair. And it's great if some people use it as a creative outlet, but for a lot of people, it's too daunting and time-consuming to maintain. I like how you pared it down to the basics. I've been thinking of trying it out again lately, and you've helped convince me.

I would be in that camp of being intimidated by all the possibilities of bullet journals. I'm not artistic and like to keep things simple as I'm much more likely to keep it up! So have failed a couple times at bullet journaling too. I'm about a week in at this point of what I think is an even more simple 'start' for bullet journals that I saw on The Minimal Mom. She basically has a brain dump page, that acts as a master to do list. And following that, I go day by day with a single, must get this done task, a following that, a few things on smaller daily to do list (that probably, but not always comes from my master to do list) and I have a square at the beginning of each that I fill in if its in progress and then a single line to cross out the item. That's it. I have found myself using the white space for notes and scribbles (almost a secondary thought dump location) that may evolve into something else later... we shall see how it goes!

Bullet journals never worked for me. They're great when you have a lot of time to keep them going. They give you the illusion of being productive and on top of things. But every time I was in a pinch the entire system breaks down because I don't have the time to keep up a system for the system's sake.
For me, a good productivity system has to get out of the way during stressful weeks. Bullet journal punishes you because when the stress goes on you have to migrate more and more todos, but there is no idea of priority. But the bullet journal system literally only works if you keep it up to date every. single. day.
On top of that, if you end up immersing into the bullet journal community, there are all these Instagram "bullet journalers" (technically just spreads) that made me feel inferior with my wear and tear - day to day - journal that is often just the ink I had at hand not fancy artsy decorations. I love me a good community around a system, but I found just a single one that would not allow Instagram BuJos, which I preferred to get actual information. I love looking at the beautiful spreads, don't get me wrong, but they're art, they're not a productivity tool.
All in all, that's a no for me. It's not a productivity tool. It's a system that makes you feel good by being busy with the system.

For years I had a fear of filling up the pages and messing up my perfectly lovely notebooks. Ok, I still have that fear but I just let myself make it "ugly." I love my notebook and use it daily. I am loyal to the Leuchtturm 1917 dotted notebooks because they are high quality, no nonsense and they come in many colors :-)
