I was just thinking about this myself! Both types of clutter can be easy to accumulate if you don't put conscious thought into what it is you're doing. The fantasy self clutter especially is something I've struggled with in the past. Living in the present moment and owning things that reflect your current life situation is far more valuable in my opinion :)
This video touched me. I've had so much aspirational clutter for so long and never had a name for it. It's great to know I'm not alone in this experience. Keep creating and inspiring, thank you two!
Thank you for giving a name to what we have all been feeling! Looking at the many browser tags open and the long list of books to read and films to watch certainly does not help me focusing on one thing (important or not) thing at the time... All the best from the London (UK)
This is really interesting because I have a lot of books that I’m “going to read” and I have a lot of crafts that I WANT to do, but never get around to doing. And like you said, they are all positive, or creative, or educational projects that are certainly enriching activities, BUT I definitely feel self imposed pressure/anxiety of an imaginary “to do” list that just grows at the back of my head at all times.
Minimalism is about CREATING space, and this addresses that from a mind perspective, and, as Amy mentions, it's about creating spaces in time. This accomplishment is something to really celebrate! Celebration and gratitude are good antidotes for anxiety and feeling bad about needing to do anything. Good work!
I came to this very conclusion some time ago. It was particularly focused on two things: learning Swedish, which I've been doing on and off for years, and in-line skating, which I picked up during the pandemic. I was adding more and more things to my habit tracker, including those two things, and then I was like "oh, wait. it doesn't matter. I will skate when I feel like it, and I learn Swedish for fun, anyway." So I put those aside. The other day my friend lent me a comic book in Swedish and I was like "cool, I will now free some evenings to sit down and read this". Sometimes, the weather outside is lovely and I pick my skates and go for a few rounds around the block. Turns out I just really wanted to enjoy those things at my own pace and becoming a Swedish speaking professional in-line skater wasn't really what I was meant to be. Instead, I'm using my time to slowly build my own business, which is currently my main goal :D
Aspirational clutter! Yes, there is such a thing. I am a father of two young kids (2+4) and they take up all my spare time. When I am hanging out with my kids, I am reminded by those items, that I should get certain things done, but I really don't have any time for that.
I relate to this. I have 10 children (aged 15-1) so to help combat the thinking of ‘the thing’ when I simply can’t just go and do it I now write in the notes section of my phone on ONE note and look at that once a week to ‘edit’ or make a plan to do it SOMEHOW haha
Ive been feeling this for a long time now since i started my minimalism journey over 5 years ago so glad you made this video ive been looking for what it is exactly and way to deal with it
My aspirational clutter is definitely the collection of art courses I have bought, but have yet to sift through and actually finish those projects. But in all fairness, personal projects are the best when during those pockets of time of having nothing else to do, so for me it's better to have them than roll on floor in absolute boredom.
Great topic, great conversation. This aspirational clutter has been burning my brain the last months... But I wonder if you have more tips on hoe to choose a path&project... maybe other video with this :D
I think you are talking about the Pareto Principle, next step. Getting rid of the first 80% of whatever clutter is relatively easy. It's applying the Pareto Principle to that remaining 20% and getting rid 80% of that 20%. At some point, I have to admit to myself that I am never going to learn to play that guitar that is sitting in the middle of my room that I have to walk around (Thanks James Clear). That is part of my aspirational clutter.
Oh dear, I am sure I am going against the group here. But, this film is such first world nonsense. 'Damaging aspirational clutter', my goodness get a grip. So much waffle. I have followed your channel for a few years but I may have to unsubscribe.
I feel like the aspirational clutter and decluttering the fantasy self are like parallel issues with occasional overlap. I love this! Great topic.
Ooo decluttering the fantasy self... interesting! Yes I liked this convo too!

I definitely turn enjoyable activities into tasks that stress me out! Thanks for putting a name to this feeling.

Thanks for this influential conversation! You're guys are great
I heard about aspirational clutter but always in a materialistic way but your approach was really helpful! Thank you!
I can certainly relate to the point of clutter weighing you down, it's something I find affects me too
More of you and Amy please ~~

This is very much the book “Essentialism”. We just have so much information and choice available to us at our fingertips these days.
Hm, I disagree with that. Essentialism is more about productivity imo
What wonderful conversation! Also, PUPPY!!!
Loved this! I'd like to hear what you two think about self-compassion, and how you approach it
Right on point.
This conversation get to tackle the biggest issue with new minimalist guys and maybe the old ones as well.
Ive been feeling this for a long time now since i started my minimalism journey over 5 years ago so glad you made this video ive been looking for what it is exactly and way to deal with it
wow i dont think ive heard of the term aspirational clutter. I enjoyed this couch conversation :)
Ooooo you guys found minimalism the same year that I did!

Thanks for the video. I've been thinking about that, and I think it's a very important topic.
this was a great reminder today. Thank you.
Really enjoyed this video!!!

Yesss!! I used to do that too even made playlists to find out later i can get rid of them
Oops, I think 90% of what I own is aspirational clutter..
You’re not alone! 😬
I hadn't watched you for a while. Hey well done on the new look, please try to minimalize saying LIKE, its too much. Content is great though.

Please do! No threat necessary.
