    Wow, that was a really in-depth analysis. This level of detail you found really makes me wish Jon Favreau directed Iron Man 2 and based it off Bob Layton's Demon in a Bottle. I think if he did, he could've made Iron Man 2 a really grounded story that we all remember for all the right reasons.

      The first Ironman movie was RDJ's first major comeback after battling addiction. No responsible director (or person in general) would set up a recovering addict whose struggles increased with fame, notoriety, and success with a project about falling into addiction.

    • @music4thesoul80

      @@dreadsmtg731 - Everything you said in your comment is flat out wrong and totally inaccurate.
      Iron Man was *not* Robert Downey Jr.'s "first major comeback" movie after getting sober.
      *Downey had been sober for 6 years and had acted in a whopping 16 movies prior to winning the role of Tony Stark in 2007.*
      The Singing Detective (2003) was Downey's first major comeback film post-rehab in 2001. Downey owes his role in The Singing Detective entirely to Mel Gibson, a long-time close friend since both starred in 1990's Air America.
      No major film studio will hire an uninsured actor and unfortunately for Downey (but also quite understandable at the time), no insurance company was willing to cover him.
      Mel Gibson (no stranger to addiction himself) famously paid Downey's insurance bond for The Singing Detective, thus securing Downey's return to film acting in Hollywood.
      As for your assertion that "no responsible director (or person) would cast an actor who is a recovering addict in a role where they play a person who falls into addiction", I just want to say thank you. Thank you for literally making me bust a gut laughing out loud because that is EXACTLY what ALL Hollywood directors would do. 😂
      Who the hell better to play a role like that than a former drug addict?? If the actor is capable, willing and feels strong enough in their sobriety to take on a role like that, why not? It might actually prove to be excellent therapy for them.
      Cleary Robert Downey Jr. himself felt this way because he played a recovering drug addict in Richard Linklater's 2006 adult animated science fiction thriller film, A Scanner Darkly.
      Next time I strongly suggest doing a little research on the person you want to talk about *before* you post a patently false comment about them online. 🤦‍♀️

      Do more careful research yourself. Downey wanted to do the demon in a bottle story for IM2, but his wife, a producer on the film, said no. Why? Because he was only a few years into his recovery and she knew that, considering how Robert immerses himself in his characters, that experience would not have been safe for him.@music4thesoul80

    Amazing work by the Screen Crush crew! This is an awesome breakdown! We absolutely need Hollywood/Marvel to return to telling stories that matter, the stories that represent our place in history and the struggles we face as a nation and as a species, not just another super hero movie with rinse and repeat dead end themes.

    Iron Man was such a game changing movie not just in the comic book media but gave mirror to the world that really resonated people and helped define the character in media for generations as the early 2000's were a deeply fear stricken time after 9/11 and Iron Man gave a sense of relatability and deep change that the world needed. Tony represents how the US and war mongering counties needed to evolve in order to understand what they're fighting for and choose to be better and try to make a amends for causing war out of fear and bring about true peace through heart and humanity.
    Especially during now with whats happening in Gaza and Palestine we need to come together to strive for a better future and not live in a world built on fear.

    Brilliant and beautiful. This, I think, is what Marvel did so well in the early years -- connecting real world events to fantastic heroes that allowed us to simultaneously be hopeful about real world challenges while escaping them in a way at the same time.

  • @cbpoppet1288

    I'd be interested in hearing what you think about how this reflects (literally) on Steve Rogers. As Tony and Steve are mirrors of each other. Tony is a libertarian, who becomes an authoritarian and Steve an authoritarian, who becomes a libertarian. Steve correctly calls Tony out in Avengers Assemble, in that he is a man incapable of self sacrifice. A capability Steve has displayed both in jumping on the grenade, and in ditching his plane in the ice. But Tony's final act in the MCU is one of self sacrifice and Steve's is to erase his sacrifice and choose instead, the life he wanted with Peggy. Is Tony the real America and Steve America's mythical self?

    • @Hypermetamorphosize
      @Hypermetamorphosize 5 місяців тому

      Never thought of it that way but I'm inclined to agree. Tony portrays Americas current arc while Steve presents as what the US is supposed to represent - limited government, the bastion of liberty and freedom uninhibited by any "industrial complex".

    • @smittymet
      @smittymet 5 місяців тому +1

      Steve was never an authoritarian. He was just a true believer in the mythology of America and our representing fairness. Remember, his main characteristic is he hates bullies. He’s very much a person who wants the little guy heard. Always has been.
      However… I do get your point as Tony wanting iron robots surrounding the planet is pretty authoritarian.

    • @cbpoppet1288
      @cbpoppet1288 5 місяців тому

      @@smittymet Taking the super soldier serum made Steve super human, but choosing his conscience over obedience made him a super hero. Doing fund raisers while people were dying made Steve a puppet of authority. Only becoming a hero by throwing off the mantle of his duty to the war effort, or alternatively, his duty to the profit margins of the military industrial complex. Steve's moral state whilst not acting to save lives is reflected in Bucky. While Bucky's acts are worse. Killing, rather than failing to take action to save. Steve is conscious of his inaction, whereas Bucky is not.

    Really loved how at the end you summed up Tony's whole character arc and the most important part was only 3 seconds. And that is how it is in real life. You live a whole life, with all your trials, ups and downs. And it does all come down to those spit decisions. How little (Like saying "hi, how are you") or how great (like actually being present) that matters. In those quick moments is when you matter. Save the world, save yourself or save another. Oftentimes it just takes reaching out our hand. Sometimes you're lifting, sometimes all you need is a little help. But understand, your life makes a difference.

    People love Iron Man because Tony was a flawed person. Sometimes he made good decisions and other times he made poor decisions. That is exactly what characters like Captain Marvel lack. Ryan, I LOVE these deeper analysis videos that you do. The deeper meaning of Doctor Strange was the first that I watched I believe. You had a lot of bold takes in this, but not just "because you feel that way", actually offering up real examples (some clips even pulled right out of the movie) to bolster your arguments. And yes I totally agree with you that Tony is mostly fueled by guilt, but his ego never (at least until Endgame) let's him think anything other than that HE has the answer, and if he doesn't have one immediately he'll be the one to come up with it.

As a European, I would almost like someone to have such in-depth analysis of this video to create an additional understanding of your American lens on this American fantasy based wish of post-traumatic glory, through a European lens for example. The American delusion of grandeur and its need to believe in it as a way to cope with life and all American crimes perpetuated onto the world is a big underlying theme within both Iron Man and your video. makes me love this movie even more (event tough i'm not American!). Maybe the flaw in the new Marvel projects is that they don't resonate as well with the current era as they did back then. I must add that for me, Iron man is King Arthur. he becomes truly King after his father when merlin (Fury) presents him to the sword in the stone that he only can pull off the stone (the new technology developed by his father (ARC reactor + new element) that he's the only one to be able to reinvent). Merlin gathers the best knigths of the realms around Arthur's round table (Fury assembles the Avengers). The knights have solo quests and the most rightful knight of all is Launcelot (Solo movies and Captain America). A conflict between Arthur and Launcelot over Guinevere breaks the unity of the realms, weakens the heroes (Cap and Tony fight over Bucky in Civil War) and allows ennemies to strike (Thanos in Infinity war). Finally Arthur forgives Launcelot and goes to confront his adultereous, incestuous son that he finally kills at the battle of Camlann but he is mortally wounded in the duel and he goes in a boat on a lake to Avalon, the mythical island ( Tony creates the unnatural time-traveling devices that allows the return of the vanished but brings back Thanos. He kills Thanos at the Battle of the Avengers Campus with the infinity stones and he's mortally wounded in the process. His heart is sent on a little boat on a lake)

    I hope this type of arc HAPPENS with the young avengers all together, trying to work along side each other, and of course things don’t work out…

    Wow. I did not expect this man. By the middle of the video, I was thinking that I want to assign this video to my engineering students as an “ethics” assignment.
