  • The Chinese mid-autumn festival is coming up soon, which means it's time for mooncakes.
    I've made lots of different kinds of mooncakes in the past, but don't make this Teochew-style mooncake often - in fact the last time I made these was five years ago, as you can see from my original blog post. They're admittedly a bit high-effort: you need time to cook down the taro paste until it becomes like a dough, you need more time to let it cool down properly, and you need even more time (and a light hand) to make the two different doughs and assemble. But it's worth it.

    💡 Top tip: Ube and taro are two different root veggies, but I like to use a bit of ube extract instead of ordinary purple food colouring to colour the oil dough part of the pastry.

      Hello! It's in Step 2 of the recipe where I mention to preheat the oven first - 200°C. Hope you give it a try, it's one of my fave pastries

    can i substitute shortening for butter and coconut oil for canola?

      You can, the pastry will just taste a little different - but still good
