Warming up properly for singing with distortion, screaming other more aggressive vocals can be one of the hardest things do! This is because it is SO easy to overdo it and not know you've gone to far until it's too late! Then... You get discouraged, have to quit for the day and start wondering if you've really messed something up.
This is why I warm up every day exactly as I show you in THIS video! This three-stage warmup allows you to ease in to your grit, distortion and other extreme sounds by the practice of RELEASING into them instead of giving into the temptation of pushing into them.
The distinction I just laid out is SO key! Try this warmup daily for a couple weeks and you'll be absolutely amazed at how EASY it is and how free it feels to use distortion techniques in your singing!

Saving this into my vocal playlist! Man, I discovered how to properly scream by myself, I was very angry one day and just started shouting and something clicked, my anger evaporated as I was like "wait a minute this sounds good". Funny isn't? Then I discovered your channel, and I instantly spotted you were talking about what I had just discovered. Been watching all your videos since, all of them are helpful and insightful, and... most of all... all of them MAKE FUCKING SENSE. Like... Jesus, I gave up learning about singing on UA-cam long ago because I never really learned anything. Thanks, Chris, your work is making people discover themselves! (A side note, I'd love to watch a video about Sting's style of singing, it's quite unique and I still haven't figured it out). Cheers.

Yeah. Everyone else is like: "lean into the velvet pancakes tone by engaging your sphinctal phalanges, then gradually add some ferrarissimo to the fianchetto, but don't stray into mozarella territory or you can damage your clitoranal pocket and destroy your theraminissimo" Then you realise that they're not gonna tell you what any of that shit means, outside of the expensive-ass course they're trying to sell. Every video promises answers but turns out to be nothing but an advertisement for the expensive-ass course.

I've been looking for something like this! I always practice my vocals in the car, but never really knew how to warm up, so I tended to just make something up that probably wasn't very effective and jump right into aggressive vocals. No noticeable damage has happened to my voice as far as I can tell, but it's still probably not good to growl and scream without some warm ups

Chris! First of all, thanks for all the hard work and the valuable lessons you give us as vocalists. I wanted to ask about something that, in the context of a live performance, I'm not sure it's needed or not. Some weeks ago I found out about different vocal pedals for singers like the TC Helicon VOICETONE series or the Boss VE-20.
I know these pedals are ment mostly for vocal performers that don't have the assitance of a soundman...and since I use some effects and tools on my own recordings (reverb, radio-like distortion, dessers, etc.), that I can't use on my live shows, I'm not sure about investing on these equiment. I wanted to know your opinion about it.
Thanks in advance and I hope your channel keeps growing! :)

Wow...thanks Chris...I have been looking for something like this. I watched many of your videos on grit, distortion, growl etc. You always talk about using your false cords. I'm wondering what I should FEEL IN MY THROAT TO KNOW IF I'M ENGAGING MY FALSE CORDS CORRECTLY? When I do use distortion, I can feel a sensation in my mask, but to be honest, I also feel some vibration when I touch my Adam's Apple. WHEN YOU ARE ENGAGING YOUR FALSE CORDS, CAN THERE BE SOME SENSATION ON YOUR TRUE VOCAL CORDS AS WELL?
