Tried it, and it was like 80% raspy air. 10 minutes later, I'm cooking and practicing your melody, then like magic, a clean high C just came out. Good stuff.
For me, I've noticed that singing gently during my morning routine seems to help me warm up for the day I feel like if I don't sing early in the day it's harder to warm up later Just me? But I'm really grateful to your videos for helping me learn to safely use my voice better and grow as a vocalist
This is literally what I have been waiting for. I am currently working on my headvoice/mixed and trying to blend to sing higher. Thank you yet again Chris!
These videos are always so good, I've been struggling with singing in my break and mastering my mix this seems like a great exercise to help with that thanks Chris!
This is incredible! I've finally found what the next step was in seeking consistency and freedom - chord closure! When I go high I was losing chord closure, this warmup is everything for me right now
Chris!!! I had a question that I think would be very interesting if you talked about it in a video! I am currently in a Into To Singing class in college and one thing our professor does that is interesting is that she does not use the typical "head/chest" register descriptions of singing but rather much more anatomical descriptions of what the vocal folds do to produce the sound. It goes: Thick fold - "Chest voice" Thin fold - "Head voice" Stiff fold - breathy (I'm not sure I'm remembering this one correctly) Slack fold - Vocal fry. I found these anatomical descriptions to be extremely helpful for me to understand my voice and I'm wondering if you've ever heard of them! If not, it'd be cool to see a video about you exploring these new, more exact definitions!
Hi Chris, It's a great exercise but I wouldn't call it a warm up. Maybe I'm being too picky 😅 I use the term warm up to describe excercises that use all the muscles and structures involved in singing in the same way we warm up to run or play sports. Focus is on activating short and long muscle fibers, increasing blood flow and relaxation by stretching and release of any tension in the body, head or neck. That's warming up. Then I move on to exercises such as your excellent one in this video to work on specific techniques. In this case to avoid tension and "reaching" for high notes by practicing placement. You've got a lot going on here and it's great that you break it down. Very valuable. Starting in head voice. Don't reach! learning to blend head to chest voice going down Learning to blend chest to head voice going up. Learning to extend head and chest voice without tension and understanding your limits and increasing flexibility. Making specific choices about how you want to sing a passage to get the sound you want. This is all really great advanced stuff that takes practice to learn and before singing something that requires you to use those techniques is great to practice them before singing the song. But this is not warm up This is technique practice. Thanks for putting this out there for everyone. Kudos for supporting singers to achieve their goals by giving back in this way!
Cant believe the great timing this video have, like just today i needed this Also just bought your master class course on aggressive singing and it's so great, best buy ever
I used to sing all the time when I was in school and when I was in a bad for school but after graduating with class 2020 I stopped my vocal warm ups and training and thought I couldn’t sing like I used to but now after trying this I feel confident again in my voice and realize I can still sing like how I used too. Thank you for this video🙏😊
I had never ever thought of STARTING in head voice and descending, my voice automatically goes into chest voice and each time I do this it gets better!
Thanks for answering a question I had for a long time. If head voice - mix and chest voice had a sort of "blurry" border. Now I see that of course there are benefits to mix voice, it does sound fuller. But at the same time if you want a lighter version because the song requires it. You can also do that. As a stylistic choice sometimes keeping your head voice could also work. Although I admit that I need to be very aware of my support during mix. MOre than during head voice.
This works!! Just tried this on the way to rehearsal. Amazing results. We do Toto's Rosanna. Tough high C. Hit MUCH more comfortably and then an A5 on Def Leppard Let It Go. Thanks, Chris!
I watch this every day to help me sing punk and rock music, thanks Chris! Any tips for female screamers? I am not ready to scream but I will eventually when I get more control
Fuck yes. Literally just singing high notes after seeing MCR and Greenday. They were amazing and hearing their voices live inspired me so much. My wife mentioned my voice sounding good and now I'm more obsessed than ever with playing my voice and your Gerard Way, Cornell and various other videos have been essential to my improvement. Seriously thank you. I have a bunch of projects (animation/music) and might be reaching out to you. I look forward to meeting you one day maybe lol.
Just in general, pop-punk and emo feels way more approachable to me than the extravagant vocal range would suggest, because the singing style is so loose and improvisational.
I was working on my mixed voice for a while and there was a lot of things in my head like "is it chest or head? okay now I do it different way is it still head voice or mix?" but while doing this warm-up it just triggered me to bump in an unfamiliar but comfortable position and sound. And you know, that was really the first time when I realized that I made a good mix sound which is full, relatively loud but not strained or screamy. That. Was. Cool.
I always like to start with my head voice when I warm up, way softer for the vocal apparatus especially on bad vocal days and I actually also get suprisingly good results for my chest voice, in my resonances for exemple ! I sometimes also do start in chest voice, but only with resonant sounds, trying to feel the vibrations in my body using different consonants and mouth/jaw placement (chest, spine, back of the neck, cranium). This is also a fairly soft and good warm up (chest or head) to ease into a richer sound and get a good feel for your vocals
There are vocal exercises and vocal warm ups these are 2 different things so I don't know which exercise is a warm up and which one is a vocal exercise please if you may create a list of vocal exercises and vocal warm ups i would really appreciate it
I provide this distinction and many many more warmups, workouts and artist studies in my group coaching program Sing Together 365. You can find more info about it at mymusicalvoice.com :)
This is great, thanks. After just one session practicing with you I feel more comfortable with the chest/head break (I usually get stuck in head when I get up there and can’t get back down until I stop and take a breath). Could you let me know the notes you are singing so I can practice with my keyboard? I can tell C-A-F-A and that it ends on a C but can’t work out the rest.
Strangely enough, I try to not think about the note names because it creates striving for me to try and hit certain notes as I sing. I just go on how things feel! So I actually don't know and don't want to know what I was singing haha.
Thanks heaps for this video Chris. It has helped me figure out what I really need to work on. After attempting this exercise a couple times, I feel like I am struggling to get good chord closure in head voice and I am unsure how to fix this. When I am doing the vocal pattern in the video I feel like there is an air leak in my vocal chords and at times I run out of breath (especially if I dont take a short break between attempts). I am also finding that if I drink water between each attempt, it helps me get a cleaner (not raspy) sound. I am noticing this only in my head voice. Is there anything I can do to strengthen my chord closure in my head voice? Or do you have any other suggestions that I could try? Any help is greatly appreciated!

This is good Tool song. I appreciate your music taste😄
Warm ups, yes, I need to adopt that.
Too true ahaha
"I warming up my mind just as much as I am my voice". That's the key!

This is the best video on UA-cam on how to build up an extremely versatile mix voice. ❤
This is clearly one of the best examples to check on chest, mix and head voice / warm-ups. Amazing Chris!

So interesting I'm exactly the same! If I have a gig in the evening I absolutely have to sing in the morning.
It's a must... I think it's as much a necessary mindset adjustment as it is a mechanical one
@@timbuckley321 Very much mental for me
I agree
same as me, its worse for screaming, I need to warm up for hours an hours to get it going.
This is literally what I have been waiting for. I am currently working on my headvoice/mixed and trying to blend to sing higher. Thank you yet again Chris!
7:20 look Chris' head moves really fast he has entered a completely new realm of singing 👻✨
haha
He looks like he’s about to say “IT WAS ME BARRY”😂😂

Thank you for all that you do, brother. I’ve appreciated your approach for being so holistic and whimsical. Hope to take one of your courses soon.
