also important to note that pacino's generation of actors could remember and deliver a long set of script and direction. whereas nowadays i don't think hollywood actors can keep more than 2 lines in their head at any time! good also to watch the guy playing Ernie: he's got no lines but he really gives a great performance - uncomfortable yet vigilant and trying to keep some kind of lid on the situation, even though he's got a coked-up madman for a boss!

    • @WarTard13

Totally agree on the actor playing Ernie. He really nails it especially when his boss begins his rant he subtly raises his finger to his temple in a gun like scratching motion as if to say, "here he goes again, how am I going to damage control this?". Really excellent stuff.

@@NewWesternFront theres a phrase that goes 'history is written by the victors'. This blurs the line between fact and fiction. To me, Tony's line of his lies being truth, are a form of his ego. A 'my way or the highway' train of thought. He perceives himself as superior, having come from the gutter and fought tooth and nail to get to where he is. We have to remember that Tony is uneducated, and so he believes that his hardship in life raises him above those who come from wealth. He is telling them how to behave around him. He's telling them, think what you want, but just never ever try to undermine me. And, quite unsurprisingly, everybody tows the line.

@@boragul9320 Yeah I guess Manny was the guy who brought word to Tony about the hit on that government guy, but I’m sure even without Manny’s help Tony would have done a similar favour and got his green card.
With the attempted Colombian Chainsaw Massacre, yes Manny saved Tony at the last possible second but he also missed the Colombian sneaking up the stairs and Angel getting grabbed from behind because he was too busy flirting with girls. That is inexcusable behaviour, Manny really couldn’t keep his hands to himself and his mind on the coke deal for 20 minutes? Angel’s death is actually Manny’s fault if Manny shouted to warn Angel he wouldn’t have ended up getting sawn in half. Yeah Manny helped save Tony but not really…
Again everything was ticking along nicely until Manny kept insisting on using his new money laundering guy who turned out to be a fed. This was the start of Tony’s downfall because it was because of the jail time he was looking at that forced him to turn to Sosa for help and we all know what happened with the favour Sosa asked for in return…
When Tony comes back from the hit, Manny who he had left in charge of the business is nowhere to be found. He’s a ghost, actually he was banging Tony’s sister, something Tony warned him never to do.
Yeah Manny was a good looking, relaxed laid back guy but he wasn’t smart and he caused Tony ALOT of problems.
There are clearly a lot of Manny fans here who haven’t seen the movie in a while…

She was nothing but a mantelpiece and she was the same to frank, its sort of elaborated on when he says money power then you get the woman. It’s a brilliant part of the story writing. You can see Tony is socially awkward when he arrives in the states and fails to actually impress Elvira and when he offers a different woman ice cream. Moral of the story, stay realistic and keep your head in reality don’t lose yourself in the aspirations of a dream.

Not sure if that equates to fear, just cautiousness while trying to maintain neutral ground with his unstable friend.
