Taunt from Pete's D-Link is a healing command, plus a dual-finisher MF strat (KHBBS, OG PSP, Aqua)

  • I'm simultaneously very surprised and not surprised at all that something like this seems to have gone undiscovered for 13 years. It's a basic attribute of the command when used from this D-Link...but said link is probably the least used/thought about in the game, and who'd think to use Taunt of all commands when low on health?
As for the dual-finisher strat, it's pretty simple. Surprise! 2 creates a ton of prizes, the Pete link's bonus gauge condition is picking up prizes. Combine the two for back-to-back finishers. It's a pretty funny strat, but it's held back by the normal finish command being difficult to hit with and MF being completely immune to Rumble Rave (Pete's level 2 finisher) thanks to its tornado-esque air spin effect. The latter in particular is a huge shame, since it would be way, way better than Fruit Shot vs. invisibility.
EDIT: Oh, and funny thing about Fruit Shot...if MF blocks it at any point, it'll last waaaay longer but lose its hitbox. MF will still jump over it as if it's a threat, though.
(I said this video would be coming in "a few days", but it took a week. Sorry about that, but this turned out to take a lot longer than I originally expected - the strat is pretty dang gimmicky lol.)

Very nice find! They replaced Taunt with Victory Pose in the HD ReMix, i'll have to check to see if it also heals
Also i found recently that you can continue your combo after Quick Blitz, so there can always be more to find in this game

Victory Pose just gives you triple what your last EXP gain was
Taunt is still a functional command in HD, you just have to save edit it into your deck

Dang, they replaced it? I guess they figured this use was too obscure...or it was unintended behavior.
EDIT: Oh right, Taunt is unavailable in general in HD...I think I knew that, but it does make the removal from Pete seem decidedly not targeted lol.
And yeah, for sure. I think BBS is still relatively unexplored.

@@oscuritaforze I think they removed Taunt because of Multiplayer being removed too (eventhough allot of multiplayer assets are still in the game like the maps)
Group Esuna is also removed but both commands are still in the game.
Does make me wonder why Group Cure wasn't removed then... i guess because it's possible to get it before regular Cure and to heal the few allies you have sometimes

@@RaXZerGamingZ I think you're spot-on on the reasons behind the Group Cure line staying in and Taunt being cut. Figure Group Esuna's out for similar reasons - I don't think you ever have allies against enemies that inflict status effects, if they're even vulnerable to them to begin with lol.

If this game had competent enemy design and its various techs weren't so obscure, Birth by Sleep would have some of the best combat in the series. Nobody explores this game as much as they do with games like KH2. Even KH3 has received similar treatment, because I guess apparently "none of Osaka Team's games have any depth".... they say as most of the people who spam Links in KH3 are bad players who suck at using their other options, and in spite of the fact that those very same people also championed the idea of going back and exploring a game's combat system thoroughly to see if it had anything to offer beyond the surface level in order to give it a more fair and objective evaluation of its merits back when KH2/2FM was not as highly thought of as it is now over half a decade ago.
Though I'm sure many of us here are already aware of this, Birth by Sleep has dodge and block cancelling for non-finisher combo hits. You'd be surprised how many people don't know that and legitimately believe that either Re:Coded or 0.2/KH3 was the first game in the series to implement the former. Dodge cancelling also has more depth in BBS and DDD, since it stores your combo state as opposed to ending it, allowing you to dodge cancel into the rest of your combo instead of making you start your combo over from the start if you cancel it. The regular physical combos are so much more viable if you understand that dodge/block cancelling exists and how to properly utilize them. Ventus and Terra are quite good on the ground with their regular physical combos when using these cancelling techniques where necessary, especially in the early game, but everyone complains about how "unusable" the Melee supposedly is when at worst some of the ground-to-air attacks have a tendency to overshoot their targets and Spellbinder's attacks are simply too slow even with dodge/block cancelling.
I hold that Dream Drop Distance HD is basically the best case argument for why BBS actually has a pretty good combat system on paper, but ultimately fell short in various aspects of execution. Obviously it has some issues, but the combat is robust and has plenty of depth, it's just not about DMC-esque combos like KH2 was. You'd be surprised just how much they spruced up even basic commands from BBS like Blizzard Edge. It's incredibly fast and is one of the best zoners in the series to date. Blizzard Edge in BBS, by contrast, was garbage. It was basically just a slower version of Quick Blitz that did more damage, had a slower cooldown and far less range.

      @oscuritaforze  Рік тому +2

Yeah, BBS not being explored as much as other games in the series/having more combat depth than it's given credit for was a factor in me starting to make videos to begin with. The "normal attacks are bad and you should never use them" preconception in particular is one that I hope to play at least some small part in shifting.
(Not to say that there isn't a bunch of stuff I'd change, given the chance...)
Can't speak to the comparisons to any of the other KH games, since I don't know any of them half as well as BBS (haven't even played 2FM or 3 lol).

@@oscuritaforze There are absolutely lots of problems with BBS that I would fix if I were given the ability and time to do so, but I just think the Osaka Games in general are treated unfairly. When KH2 was still a pretty unpopular game in the series around a decade ago KH2 fans were asking people to go back to it and explore the combat system more deeply because it had more to offer than "Mash Cross and Triangle to win". Then, as a result of those people shedding some light on some combat depth in the game that people didn't know about, the game gradually became a lot more popular in the community.
_Buuuuut_ when people who are fans of as well as critical of the Osaka Games ask those very same KH2 fans to go back to the Osaka Games and do the same thing, the response is either silence, criticisms of the game(s) that usually spread misinformation, and/or general dismissal of the idea that the combat in the Osaka Games could be more nuanced and/or more balanced than they give it credit for (often with a very hostile attitude that is typically pretentious as well). It's a double standard, one of many that KH2 fans have in fact, and it pisses me off. The nonsense "criticism" KH3 receives for its combat and overall gameplay from many people is one of the reasons why I'd like to start making videos about KH3, because I've yet to come across a single critique of KH3 that meets my standards to convince me that it's objectively not a good game. If no one else can be bothered to analyze and critique the Kingdom Hearts games in the correct way, then I'd like to be the first person to do that, or at the very least be the first person to try.

@@oscuritaforzeIf more videos like this are made, people might be enlightened to the actual depth of this game. Maybe this series could inspire a popular video like Powercell Zeke's "Jak II's Hidden Depth" to be made which will expose more of the game's mechanics and strategy to thousands of people. Then, suddenly people will know how to play it with advanced strategies, like how thousands of men suddenly were running a mile in less than four minutes after the first man did it in 1954.
