- The engine room of Prototype HST Powercar 41001 is the setting for this video and it sees Paxman Valenta Power Unit S508 working away whilst in service at Great Central Railway (Nottingham). More details of 41001 can be found at www.125group.org.uk
You canonly imagine how hard these engines had to work every single day.......the forces at play and the heat cycles....mind bending tbh.
My right ear really enjoyed this
Same lol
My left ear enjoyed this
Looking for my headphones!!
I'm gonna miss this Valenta sound forever
Imagine standing between two 16V RP 200s at 1200 rpm. I so enjoyed working on these engines.
Brings back so many memories listing to that and I used to covered my eyes as kid on stations 😂
For me the ultimate place to experience Valentas was Bristol Parkway, up road. Two notches to get the train moving, then give it the lot. Took off like a scalded cat with the turbocharger heading for the stratosphere! So impressive. The MTUs are more efficient, but there's no drama.
I have bed tested around 50 of these Engines At Paxman Colchester, A true Workhorse, Unfortunately BR would Run them on idle for ages to heat up the carriages etc, especially at Edinburgh station,, this Carboned up the exhaust ports so when the engine was loaded the gas was restricted causing overheating problems, Whilst the engine may sound slightly rough,, it, as with most engines, was designed to run at 3/4 load or power, The sound of the Turbo gaining speed is even better without the air filters fitted, we only used a metal gauze when being run in from new, believe me!
I remember visiting one of the open days at Derby works during the early 80's. At the time they had one of these on test at full power in one of the test rooms. The induction roar outside the building from the air intake was phenomenal! I still remember the sound nearly 35 years later .
I remember seeing valenta units going through the motions on a load bank at crewe open day once, impressive!
DIDnt think it would be your fault! :D
That's a design fault not British rails fault. The engine could not cope with being idled at a station then opened up and then back to idle again and again. It could not cope with the change in temperature, marine applications where set rpms were held for hours it could. It was not suited to the job. Any engine should be able to idle then accelerate, that's what engines do. Oh and by the way carbon will not build up in the exhaust ports on idle. Perhaps it was people like you who do not have a clue maintaining them that messed them up?
I envy you being able to test these magnificent engines. Shame the MTU 16V R41 does not have the “drama” but I’ve gotten used to their low rumble. I’m curious, how do you think the MTU compares with the Valenta. Bring a much newer engine, do you think they will have such long lives in hours run? I would imagine the MTU is much fussier with service requirements. I’ve also read people say the VP185 is a superior engine to the MTU and in the original testing a 185 would be sent back for service after how ever many thousands of miles in operation and there would be hardly any wear at all on the head/cams. I hear some fitters initial inexperience with them gave a bad reliability reputation at the start but this was all wrong and once they got used to them these have proved very reliable. They seem great in the East Midlands HST’s. I also hear problems with availability of parts/service when MAN initially took over put off the TOC’s who plumped for the MTU instead. So I’m curious..is the VP better than the MTU in your opinion?
What a lovely sounding engine.
So many memories of these hauling me back and forth from Newcastle to London weekly. Gunning down the ECML watching fields flash by. I just wish I'd been sat next to the engine the whole journey!
Having living close to the ECML, I really miss the excitement of hearing a screaming Valenta. I was gutted when they were replaced with MTUs.
Adam G Tell me about it. Many happy memories of these screaming past Hatfield when I was a kid.
I'll never forget one time I was in my garden, and the train tracks from my house were about 800 yards away. It was a summer day and ideal conditions, barely any wind but just the slightest breeze from the south. Well, a Valenta HST went past going south. Not a big deal normally. Except this time that scream carried on the wind for absolutely ages. A good minute or so you could hear it howling away in the distance. Remember just standing listening wondering how long it'd go on for. Amazing.
The HST lost a bit of its soul when they retired the Valenta. Nothing will ever come close to beating that sound.
Same, I lived in Bath and they made a fabulous noise as they exited the tunnel from Sydney Gardens. That scream is very nostalgic
@@Spudchucker92 The VP185 installation in the XPT has a nice exhaust note (unlike in the Class 43) but no Valenta scream. Take a look at `XPT at Wauchope'
what a cracking noise that Valenta makes!!!!
Quite literally the best sounding engine to exist
Pure paxman heaven !
Lovely sound
VERY NICE!!
Completely bonkers. God I miss these Valentas.
awesome
Can we have a 1 hour version please?
Hst forevermore
GODDAM HELLFIRE
Absolutely superb
Fantastic scream!!
Cor just lovely!
Wow beautiful if only GWR would put a couple of Valenta Engines back in there HST Trains I do like the MTU Engines but you just can't beat the sound of that Valenta scream
+MrJoshiej Yea, the Valenta's are epic!
Sounds like the valenta engine on train simulator in the AP valenta enhancement pack
AP used this very engine for recording
Listen to the turbo's......nice
paxman rules
A sort of railway equivalent of the Rolls-Royce Merlin
yes
Luv those turbos
Valentas only had 1 big ass turbo...
As someone who has asthma, I much prefer the MTU engines. Honestly, I much prefer the MTU sound too. Most likely cause I was born post MTU installation, so I grew up around them. But the valenta's (and VP185), sound great too, I like the WHOOOSH when they pass at speed!
People shit on the MTUs, however keep in mind they're the reason why HSTs haven't been retired in the 2000s.
@@derektaylor2941 f*cking troll
holy mother...
Awsome😊
Can I have one of these for my Mayland 14ft fishing boat please? The wee boat is a scaled down Vospa MTB that both these and the Deltic came in so I feel I'm owed one.. I will reinforce my transom next week and let me know when I can expect a shot thanks
AND SOMEBODY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEAD TO PUT A GUARDS POSITION RIGHT BEHIND THIS BET THEY DIDN'T THINK IT WAS A LOVELY NOISE.
Dear 125group, a friend of mine and I had a discussion concerning the Paxman Valenta engine. Is the engine originally fitted with a supercharger or with a turbo-charger, concerning it's characteristic high pitched whine. It doesn't matter to me who's right, just what is true!
Turbocharger.
Hard to believe that on full power, it's still only 1500rpm!
Valenta engines for BR were down rated to 2250 BHP @ 1500 RPM @ 247 BMEP (for the technically minded).
Marine application engines ran @ 1600 RPM (303 BMEP - if I remember correctly) and had a Sprint Rating of 1750 RPM for 15 minutes (if you needed to chase someone.
1500rpm makes it a high speed diesel engine, certainly not slow. It was a design requirement to keep the weight down that the engine be compact, fast, and powerful. A Valenta idles faster than most diesel engines spin at full power.
@@duncanbhaltaireanraigwilso9627 big diesels, not most diesels
@@bonkeydollocks1879 it does in fact rev faster then any rail industry used engine since the dawn of using thermal engines in trains.the US counterparts for GE maximum rpm is 1050,and alco at 1150rpm, Electro-motive sits at max 950rpm.
The valenta idles at 900rpm,it is the fastest 4 stroke cycling rail used engine that has been made
@@johncarter2439 I fear you misunderstand
But sounds like a jet
Qantuz hp? ?
how much litres has this engine?
Eurorunner Herkules 79 litres
thanks
79L. If you want to be pedantic, 79006cc
Can you do another vid about 3hours long 😂
is it firing on all 12 cylinders.. as i heard its only set to fire only on 8?
Doesn't quite sound right so maybe it is only firing on 8
No, it's firing on all 12.
Ben Webber ahhh ok
Is it true it’s being withdrawn?
Gutted. Would've given anything to see and hear the Valenta back in action again. Sadly not to be.
Yes. Noise from the turbos and strictened emission standarts.
@loveparade4824 Those are the production Valentas and the last one was withdrawn in 2010. This is a prototype that was restored and briefly ran on preserved lines where pollution doesn't matter. One of these can't be much worse than an average kettle in terms of pollution
scream my pretty
