  • Here are a selection of shots that are for the lovers of the Paxman Valenta power units that used to drive the inter city 125s. They certainly were noisy engines. The details are a bit sketchy as I seldom took interest in them.
First we see power unit number 43161 leading 43160 passing under Shaldon Bridge in Teignmouth the time is approx 1930hrs. Im sorry I dont know the service but it was filmed on the 21st April 1995
Next we see a cracking shot of a HST set being led by 43121 bursting out of Whitball tunnel on the Devon side
Next shot is of 43047 leading a service to St Pancras racing away from Chesterfield on the 28th June 1992,
The next shot is of 43141 leading 43140 on the single track section of the Great Western at Grampound road hauling the 1445 p\enzance to Paddington on the 16th March 1994.
Next we see 43036 leading 43042 bresting Dainton bank with Penzance Paddington service filmed on a snowy 17th February 1994.
The final shot shows 43174 departing Yeovil Pen Mill with a diverted Paddington to Plymouth service neath a classic paxman cloud of smoke on the 2nd December 1992.

Had to smile at the clip from 28th of June 1992. Just 5 days before I was born.

Many memories as a child waiting at Reading for the train to Penzance, and the piercing sound of these revving up before my train arrived

Music to my Ears 🎶🎶And my Childhood growing up seeing and Hearing these, Was 3 in 1976 when I first heard Of these, The way these HSTs sound now without the Valenta is not a great thing, Back then in the 1970s and the 1980s Oh Yeah 🔊

From the late-80s to the late-90s I worked alongside the line at Taunton. I loved hearing the Valentas pulling out of the station. :)

All history now, apart from those on the Network Rail New Measurement Train locos. Thanks for recording them for posterity!

Used to catch the bus from Amersham to Slough in the school holidays just to see this. The days when platform tickets never existed. I'd be gone hrs armed with nothing but fruit pastils and water.

Used to work, for an old established haulage company, in Lincoln, moving raw castings, from Beevor foundry, to Paxmans, at Colchester, also took some machined blocks,as well, I believe they were the Valenta engines, used in the 125s.

I only have vague memories of the Valentas - mainly being fascinated by the turbo noise and the amount of clag. Now I know the really smoky ones were actually leaking coolant (the puff of smoke in the last clip hurt me inside)

Showering my home station with clag - superb stuff. The diversions in the early 90’s?
