- In this Drum Lesson you will learn 5 of the most famous John Bonham Grooves. He was the drummer of the famous Band Led Zeppelin and is without a doubt one of the best rock drummers ever. The Grooves I chose for this lesson are not necessarily his "best" or most famous ones, but will give you an inside in his incredible drumming skills. Here you will find everything, from heavy grooves to shuffles to odd times.

You just summarized every damn lesson on this stuff, with awesome play allong time, and simple breakdown. This helped me more in 15 minutes than all of them together. TY man
Its weird to think that Bonzo just thought of these grooves by himself. The genius we lost will forever be one of the greatest tragedies in music history.
you are absolutely right!
Great playing and instruction, good brother! The breakdowns are brilliant - I thought The Crunge and Fool in the Rain were untouchable for me as a 'play-by-ear drummer'; thanks to your lesson, I think I'll be able to nail The Crunge tonight!
Many thanks!
Thank you so much for your kind words. I am glad I could help. You are right, the Crunge is really hard to hear, because you are always "chasing" that '1'.
Have a great day!
Hello! I recently discovered your channel and it is a breath of fresh air in the world of UA-cam drum lessons. Your instructions are concise and to the point. I have been playing most of my 65 years and Bonham has always been special. He was a jazz enthusiast and the flashy incredible Gene Krupa was an idol. Understand JB and you understand independence and groove\swing. I think he would be amused at the multiple dissections of his grooves. He was a natural and his incredible playing just oozed forth from his brain and limbs. Thank you for helping us mere mortals understand these incredible licks. I have become a devoted fan of your channel!
Really nice breakdown and step-wise approach to these grooves. Thank you.
Glad you like it John, thanks for watching!
I agree. Hearing it on the bell of the ride with all the rest sounds amazing
That was amazing how simple you made that! Thank you!!!
Nice pick!👍
However, my top 5 Bonham Grooves would be:
5) Good Times Bad Times
4) Achilles Last Stand
3) Moby Dick (Intro/Pre-Solo)
2) When The Leeve Breaks
1) Fool in the Rain
great choice, Achilles last stand has such an incredible feel.. Love those high speed fills!
I am dilettant drummer but you are great....thx for lessons....bonzo forever
Very helpful. I have had a hard time working out these drum grooves until I found your video. I am subscribing for sure.
7:05 I think I might have seen Bonzo's soul over the cymbals
Whoah, you're right! Cool!
Oh goodness - definitely someone - that's amazing!
John is smiling for sure with this video...great work!
Hi guys. John Bonham is one of my favorite drummers. The drum pattern of Immigrant Song was (still is) inspiring for me.
Same here, bro!
@@DailyDrumLesson 👍
Nice job, and great choices! I believe the reverb on "Levee" was from the space they used at Headley Grange. In fact, the echo coming back off the walls creates a slight swing feel at the 16th note level, something Bonham surely made sure happened when choosing the tempo.
Nope. They used a binson echorec with a 225 ms delay. Find the interviews with Andy Johns who was the engineer on the album. The stairwell helped, but the main reason for the echo was the Binson.
Great job! You're delivery is very clean and even.
Great treatise on John Bonham's magnificent drumming
Great breakdown mang.... I could study this vid for 3 months. Peace
Excellent choices.
This is amazing, thank you so so so much... You are an AWESOME teacher... Wish I could get live lessons with someone like you... This is exactly what I've been looking for... :-)
That is so nice.. thanks a lot, Eric!
This dude is a bum and ya'll actually think he's a professional! He doesn't even come close to the master! He's subservient 100%
Thanks for the great lesson
Excellent lesson
Thank you for this!
Great video! I love how you break the grooves down into different parts and tempos. Also I'm very jealous of your kick drumming skills haha.
Thank you, appreciate it. Good times bad times is probably the best song to practice your Bass Drum doubles. And to be honest.. I warmed up for more than 30 minutes just to film this song. haha.
Great lesson and explanation!
This is so useful. I'm working on Fool in the Rain at the moment. Going to tackle the Crunge next I think. Thanks! :D
Sounds like a good plan ;-) Have fun!
Well played and explained. Hope your cold didn’t slow you up too much!
Loved it. Would have also liked the second groove in Fool in the Rain on cymbal bell.
If you have access to Drumeo, Brian Tichy does a great course on The Grooves of John Bonham. He explains the triplet ride bell pattern. Very cool. Try to check it out.
I just started watching you and I really like the way you teach, I sure do wish I had YT and teachers like you when I was growing up. Thanks
¡Muchas gracias y muchas Felicidades!
Been awhile since I watched you forgit how great the videos are. Thanks again keep up great work!
Glad you came back, my friend!
@@DailyDrumLesson Me to sonething very laid back and relaxed aboutnyour teaching style.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. I will look at your pedal technique vid. What do you think about seat height? A downward angle from the hip to the knee or straight across from the hip to the knee to achieve the Bonham pedal technique?
Thanks for watching, appreciate it! .. I think seat height is a very personal thing. I have seen drummers sitting extremely high or extremely low and achieving incredible speeds. So your seat height won't limit you. You just have to find your sweet spot.
I'd go with upper leg parallel to the floor as a starting point. Then move up and down and see what changes for you.
I sit a bit higher than parallel.
So Cool , sound so clean
Thank you, Jim!
Fantastic teacher !! thx !!
You’re an awesome teacher. Keep jamming!
Thank you so much, Paul!
Great video. Particularly liked your excellent deconstruction of the grooves! I will have a look at your other videos for more of this type of thing. Thanks :)
Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend!
Merci beaucoup, bon travail. Thank you !
de rien monsieur!
Hello, I like what you do, on the other hand can you do a tutorial on the returns in the ears, PM16 connections maybe or other, thank you in advance
When the Levee Breaks is a great jam session drum part.
Nice! I've been looking for good Crunge video's and you did a great job explaining it. On Levee, I've always buried the beater on "1" and pulled the beater away from the head on the "and," just to give it more of that ghosty, reverb feel. Just my preference, though--love your videos!
Thanks a lot Bryan. Got to try that beater trick on when the levee breaks, thanks for the input!
Execelente. Felicidades !
Awesome you put The Crunge and Poor Tom on your list
Yeah, both of these songs are pretty underrated in my opinion!
Great vid. One of my fav John B songs (I'm not sure I've got the title right) 'Nobody's Fault but Mine'.
I love that song.. Plants singing is incredible on this one!
steve mackey nobody’s fault ... is a corker which demands first class playing from any musician playing any instrument. I should imagine it’s beyond a lot of very good players too?😀
Great lesson on these iconic Bonham grooves
Thanks a lot!
I am currently working on Fool In The Rain. It is starting to sound good. It was good to see you perform it. What about when John moves the groove to the ride and pulses quarter note triplets with the right hand. It would be good to see you do a lesson on how to get that. It is holding me back right now. Thanks man.
I might do a lesson on that in the future. It's a great groove, too!
I just found your channel, it's the best lesson I ever had. 😀
Wow, that is so nice.. Thanks a lot!
Hi Michi, wieder einmal super erklärt, vielen Dank dafür !!! Meine beiden Favoriten sind "Fool in the Rain und The Crunge".
Vielen Dank, Michael! Frohes neues Jahr wünsche ich.
This is one of the best drum lesson site...
Thanks so much, I really do my best here!
CAN you explain Stargazer.? Vuelen Dank so much,
"Levee" was actually recorded in a huge hall, a school, if I remember correctly. The position of the microphone was synced with the tempo, such that the echo was heard in the tempo. So there are actually no shadow shots there played, just the natural echo.
Jaakk0S it was recorded in headley grange, in a stairwell as he said in the video
Dig these grooves man! Great job!!
Thank you very much!
Yes 5 good picks.
GREAT!
Große Klasse Dein Kanal!
Danke dir!
Hi Mickey! Thanks for uploads. Do you know any musicians collaborating with international musicians speaking and performing in more than two languages and perhaps make some fusion music to record or perform for audiences?! I have some original songs in English that could be fused with international rhythm and composition.
Thank u ur the best teacher
Thank you so much, Matthew!
Great lesson!
Thanks a lot!
Great video. Plus I like the hoody :)
Finally, an online instructor who doesn't sound like R2D2...LOVED your breakdown of the 9/8 in 4/4! I've been telling other drummers and Students to do this for 40 Years...they look at me like I've got 12 Heads! Never fails, once they learn the song, there's a "SKIP" between 9 and 1! Instead of playing straight over the Bar, they Jump it like an Equestrian Horse! (LOL!) Had a fellow drummer who would have an epithany in the middle of the night & call me and start counting Gavin with 05Rick (or what ever the hell his digits are)...would put the phone on the bed & I swear this idiot would still be trying to count that crap 2 hours later! He wouldn't understand you...you're not hard enough for him to make excuses about his playing! LOL!
Hey Dan, I really don't understand why youtube marked this comment as "probably spam", since it is one of the greatest comments I have ever gotten.. haha!
Thanks for tuning in and have a great weekend!
I cant believe poor tom was left off zeppelin 3. That's definitely a Zeppelin 3 tune.
Superb as usual 👍
Thanks a lot!
The best teacher 🙌
Wow, thank you so much!
Respect from Croatia
hvala ;-)
is when the levee correct? i remember reading the snare hits were echos with a delay unit and not actual ghost notes? not sure though
watched further and youve just answered my question!
Perfect.. thanks for watching!
Hey can anyone tell me for fool in the rain.
On the hi hat.. You tap it with..
CLOSED, CLOSED, OPEN, CLOSED at the beginning. 4 strikes with the right stick
And on the 3rd strike, with the left stick you tap the snare.
I know this is basic but I'm only starting out and can't get the hang of the ghost notes 🤦♂️
Great job
Thank you, Jeff.
He's not even close ffs! Dude ain't no professional! Wake the fuck up
I like your kit bro :-D great lesson
Thanks man. It's not a Bonham Kit, but a great allrounder!
what base pedal do you use? Thanks for the video! Outstanding.
yeh, what pedal indeed ?
For GTBT on the first part is there not a bass note on the & of 3? Three quick bass hits right before the 4.
I have been working on the Wanton Song & In my time of dying anyway you could break those down for me?
great job man!
Thanks a lot!
Tank you teacher 500000000000likes tank you god lesson
Curious as to why you didn’t play Fool in the Rain at full speed? 🤔
2:30? Ghost by tge right crash?
Hey, great drum sound. May I ask what drums, drumheads and mics you use ? Greetings
Thanks a lot!
This video is pretty old. Back thank I think, I used Remo Ambassadors top and bottom. My overheads were 2 AKG c214, SM57 on the Snare, d112 (or beta52) on the kick, e604 on the toms and an AKG c451b on the hihat (which is probably very low in the mix).. As room mic I used either another AKG c451b or an SM57.
Hope that helped :)
@@DailyDrumLesson thank you a alot for the quick answer.
May I Alsp asj you type.of srums and what sozesnyou used. The whole forum went nust wenn a guy posted some of you songs....great, man.
greetings and very thanks
Which drums are u using is that 22 inch bass drum I don't have need the toms to be big but u disappointed me without using a 26 inch bass drum 😡
Hi mate what hihats are you using?
Those are 14" Zildjian K light Hihats.. Absolutely love them!
Nice! however the choice of grooves is not mine..♫♪♫♪
what are your top 5?
Nice but you're missing ghost notes, especially in the Fool In The Rain groove.
He is ghost noting in Fool in the rain though?
can you please tell the parameters of the delay used on when the levee breaks? thanx!
Well at 5:00 I hear B B SS B BBB SS BB BBS S B BBB S S in original track(Base, Snare)😁
1:16 _Spot on!_
Thanks man!
@@DailyDrumLesson
Hey, you deserve it! Not only do I agree with the comment (this song comes to mind whenever I think of L.Z.), but your metronomic timing (and yes, _"metronomic"_ *now* a word) is _"spot on"_ throughout. Thanks for sharing, and all the great work! I wish I'd seen a channel like yours at 10 years old.
Absolute Newest sub!
_-Cheers!_
_Edit =_ Now kids of all ages *_can see a channel like this_*
@@sparhopper Wow, that is so nice, comments like this really give me a lot and make me keep going. So thank you!
My goal was always to make a channel I wanted to watch when I was starting out and I am so glad that it is working out and others see it the same way.
Welcome to the family!
@@DailyDrumLesson
Cheers!
Got to get a cow bell
2:24
You know you are too talented of a drummer when you let Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones go off and you drum around/between the notes instead of the reverse.
you are absolutely right, haha!
needs more cowbell tho
haha!
dam kid, that's sum butter smooth good times bad times kudos
RBG ilikebox.com
more cowbell.
That's not close to Good Times Bad Times. Your bass drum is way off.
Please link your video to show us how it's done the correct way.
Ride that damn cowbell
No light taps when your playing that cmon
I'm still expecting to see some posts about how Bonham stole drum beats from other songs, other artists. That's how ridiculous these "professional" music analysts have become here on YTM.
No feel! Gotta work on your time man!
Hi Tops 2 Hi Hats hi - I think Mikki was playing through a cold which does cause the odd time slip but nothing too serious & let’s remind ourselves how difficult it is to nail these grooves esp without a band & in a sterile environment.😀
@@terrytk9398 I think hi tops no hi hat is sniffing glue 😂
It’s a travesty that Moby Dick isn’t on here
‘Daily drum lesson’ … more like ‘ rest of your life’ drum lesson
