That was a fun lesson to film and quite an experience digging into John Bonham‘s drumming 🙏🏼 What‘s your favorite Bonham recording that I should listen to?
Back in the early '80s, I would pay good money for drum lessons and most of the time spent was learning rudiments . Not many teachers spent time breaking down songs we all wanted to learn. To young drummers out there.. Be thankful you have YT and really great teachers willing to show you how. I had to figure it out for myself..
lol. me too. rudiments only. and a few fills & beats. good tt have them. but Youtub is another level. just brill. do you remember: Go to be tom; & para-a-diddle par-a-diddle & its a 1, its a 2, its a rattamacue !~!
As always, Chris, you break things down so well -- into the "learning order" -- and your production standards are wonderful. It makes it a doable and enjoyable process. Extra points for your vocalization on "Kashmir."
Great video! I would have loved to see the Good Times Bad Times lesson extended in to the triplet grove. I know the concept but still have trouble with it. Thanks,
I saw one of those kits at a G.C a couple years ago. I couldnt believe how good that kit sounded. The bass drum was perfect. Super boomy and didnt have that wonky sound that is usually e.q 'd out with a sound system. It already sounded great the way it was.
Last year I sold my 80s era 4-piece Yamaha Recording Custom Tours for a 5-piece PDP Concept Maple (with new Evans EC2s) - Bit of a downgrade but.. Not only did I pocket 1/2 the money but feel these drums sound better. No need to spend 3-4K anymore.. Great quality for a fantastic price.
I can't believe you can break this down so even a beginner like me can follow it! I am going back to some basics first but I think this 1st one at least is doable. Thanks so much, and have a Happy New Year's.
nice job. your Fool in the Rain shuffle is one of the nicest out there. many play it, but you have the distinctive feel and subtle nuances of how Bonzo played it. LOVELY !
As a teen that Fool in the Rain breakdown part would F me up. I’d be listening with headphones trying to figure it out wondering how the hell he was playing all that. Answer - it was multi tracked. OK, fine!
While I know most professional drummers would disagree, I feel Richard D. James is by far one of the BEST drummers on the planet,... point being, a completely untapped area of study on UA-cam is how to ACTUALLY make Richard D. James's style of drums... Which i commonly referred to as Break Core... Not even Point Blank has a course on how to write Break core... And it also uses complex Time Signatures similar to Kashmir.... Which I would argue was not explained correctly in terms of the phrasing, though you did count it correctly and to follow your example would 100% return the desired result, but I feel explaining the Time Signature correctly and not just mimicking the pattern with attention to downbeat would be more helpful, at least for trying to write out the pattern and not just play it... You can only always feel the resolution when playing it, but understanding it is a whole different ball game. And while Google seems to completely disagree on what the time signature of Kashmir is, if you look at the sheet music, is is very obviously is a 12/8, and I would argue that it resolves into 8/4 by adding a somewhat erroneous extra bar for dramatic effect... Which is arguably rather difficult to transcribe, since it is something that HAS to felt. Of course I had Time Signatures explained to me 1000 times and it wasn't until I transcribed Monkey drummer in a 4/4 that I understood how to apply Time signature changes correctly... And it was explained to me 1000 time incorrectly as it turns out, whether by expert, professional, or college professor (at least in the US) the correct usage of Time Signature changes is seemingly not understood by anyone... Except by Richard D. James, who programmed his own drums instead of playing them. Which is why I feel he is the BEST Drummer on the planet... Him and Mangini ;D..
This was an exceptional presentation and explanation of the subject material sir. The breakdown of Bonham's parts and how to practically apply them with repetition is a very logical approach that I think will yield positive results for all your students. Thanks again
I love these huge pdp kits they are so amazing and paired with those paiste cymbals is perfect set up for a drummer. Most drum kits sound good even if they are cheap but the cymbals are not forgiving when it comes to cheapness
Kashmir: just count in 3/4, so you can just follow the guitar riff and melody of the lead vocal... Bonham is the only one who's playing as if it was 4/4, but actually 4x 3/4 so a logic scale . First measure 8th notes hi-hat, bass 1 and 3, snare on 2. Second measure snare 1 and 3, bass on 2......just play in 2 phrases of 2 3/4 measures, chords and vocals are doing/moving the same...
@@ArtOfDrumming I'd like to ask you to repeat the way you counted, Ie: 1e&a etc, you had added other options / sounds, to take you to the count of 8. I'm not Computer Literate, so I don't know how to find them... Many thanks. Leo. R
