We call sugar apple/sweet sop ''atis'' in the Philippines. It's indeed very delicious! It's one of my favourite tropical fruits. Insects that are attracted to the sugar apple fruit/tree, aside from black ants, are mealybugs and grey stink bugs.

As a kid, I kind of hated Sugar Apples due to the fact that it would almost always be covered with Mealybugs and that they'd take forever to ripen.

I kinda turned down by the fact that people often find flies's larva in the common sugar apple in my country, I know it's fine now due to food regulation and maybe more pesticide (which didn't make the situation any better if Im being honest), I have trust issue with this fruit, also the amount of seeds in it is kinda tiresome to deal with

If you live in the eastern half of the US, you can easily find a close relative of this fruit called the pawpaw (asimina triloba). They're really common in the wild here but spoil quickly so they don't sell them in stores. They are ripe throughout the month of September so if you're reading this soon after I'm posting, go venture into the woods and try a new fruit!
For those who don't want to brave the woods, there are festivals dedicated to the fruit all throughout the season. Almost every eastern state has one so that's another easy way to try them. Trust me, they're worth the effort!

We have atis tree in our home, it has big black seeds, they look like small pinapple like skin, if its ripe, it cracks open. Its twin is the guyabano, a larger version of sugar apple but it dosent have segments, instead its spikes..
