We build an exhaust system for the 1970 MGBGT

  • After putting the replacement cylinder head on the ‘70 MGBGT we’ve been working on, it needs an exhaust from the newly installed header to the back of the car. The owner opted to use the 2 glass pack mufflers he already had, and had brought with the car. That means we have to build the system.
I started with a universal 2” exhaust pipe kit to use some of the pipe and bends out of, as that made it more cost effective than buying individual pieces (I only would need about half of the kit, and I can save the rest for other projects). The header fit was less than ideal and it had to be tweaked before any exhaust pipe could even slide on to it, and it wasn’t straight with the car meaning the first section had to have a bit of a wonky jog to fit. We show a method for cutting exhaust bends at a known angle, and a way to mark a square cut on a straight piece of exhaust pipe. After a bit of cutting and welding we mocked up enough to find out the 2 mufflers he provided just was too loud and harsh sounding, so we changed it up with something you wouldn’t normally find under an MG.

Installed stainless exhaust kit with moss factory hangers. Hung a little low. Installed a hanger on cross member with rubber sleeve to obtain more ground clearance. Took about 4 hours. Sound is ok. Double nutted where down pipe bolts to cast iron manifold. Cost $400. Thank You for video.

Usually, I end up putting the stainless systems on, but this guy already had the header and mufflers wanted to use them. None of those systems would’ve easily matched up to the header he had without some cutting and welding anyway. A popular choice is the tourist trophy system, it sounds pretty nice but sometimes the flanges aren’t straight. It doesn’t fit without some adjustments.
