Shop Update 9/29/24 and an Unfortunate Incident
We’ve spent quite a bit time outside of the shop this past week working on some other projects and dealing with a few unexpected events. That being said, we thought it would be a good time for a channel update since we haven’t done one in awhile. The ‘80 MGB that we put the wiring harness in left this morning…and then came right back. On their way home, the idle suddenly changed dramatically, so with some quick troubleshooting we found a fix from a previous owner had failed so we’ll show you what happened and how not to fix it. But we do have a couple of new cars coming in next week, so tell us what you would like to see on those, but you’ll have to watch to see what they are! We’ll talk a little about the TD assembly progress with some details on refurbishing the dash and gauges. Then move on to another example of the issues with aftermarket parts these days, but this time it’s a windshield, and not even the cheaper ones. We’ll show you how we opted to fix the issue instead of sending it back and probably having the same problem with the replacement.
On to the “Shape of things to come”, the TR7 owned by the “almost not a teenager” that we’re supervising in trading the webber carb conversion back to original Strombergs. Progress has been a little slow due to his schedule but other circumstances have come up that will need him to get it back on the road quickly. Lastly, we move outside to see just what those circumstances are. Again, watch to see what happened, but we will say … drive defensively out there, keep your classic (and yourself) safe.

After the owner installed a new radio and USB port, this 1980 MGB decided to let the smoke out of its wiring harness. So we now have it in the shop to check out the condition of the dash harness to be sure there isn’t melted wiring there and to definitely replace the main harness. The shop has been missing something for quite some time that would make a lot of projects go so much easier. We’ve done a fair amount of research over the past year or so and finally decided it was just time to take the plunge and we made a new purchase for the shop. Now we need to go on a road trip to northern Cincinnati to get it. But since we’re in Cincinnati, we HAD to make a stop to visit ...
1980 MGB LE Walk Around
Переглядів 794Місяць тому
Today we’re taking a look at the 1980 MGB LE that came in the shop for some minor repairs that we covered in the last video. The owner has only averaged about 100 miles per year since buying it, so it is a surprisingly low mileage car. Just how low? Watch to find out! It drives like it just came off the showroom floor and though not quite perfect, presents very well too. So just how did a 44 ye...
Late MGB ignition issue / common mistake
Переглядів 938Місяць тому
Today we have a 1980 MGB LE in the shop with an ignition problem. Like many other cars we’ve had in the shop over the years, the problem is actually due previous work that’s been done to the car by a mechanic who wasn’t as savvy with British cars. An ignition “upgrade“ has to be done right using the correct coil, and wired correctly to work as intended. How do you know you’re buying the correct...

    I am resto modding a 1974 MG Midget. I like the dashes though of the 1965, 66, 67 Mark2 style. I just wonder how difficult would it be to modify the wiring harness for. Or is there any recommendation you would have concerning this?

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy 8 днів тому

      Lots of owners of MGB's have retrofitted the pre '68 dash into later cars, so it is doable (yours would actually be easier as the early/later B scuttle is different requiring a filler panel). You just have to look at the wiring diagrams for both the '74 and the '65-'67 cars to determine the wiring differences, and adjust accordingly to make it all work. I honestly haven't looked close enough at those year differences to know if the mountings changed (not nearly as many Midgets come through the shop as MGB's) but I would think they are likely the same/very similar as they really didn't change things like that if they could design around what was already there to reduce tooling costs.

    Assumptions about what people have done to a poorly running vehicle are a rabbit hole. Even if they haven't been touched the o rings in the carbs are potentially 40 years old and throttle bushes worn with air leaks. If they have been interfered with its better to assume nothing is correct and do a thorough disassembly, clean and rebuild referring to a works diagram. SU's are a deceptively simple carb, capable of accurately metering the fuel demands of the engine. Needle swaps may get you into the right ball park, but reproducing the needle at specific points may be necessary.

    i've got three british cars and finding a temperature sensor that fits AND provides the right voltage to match the gauge so as to create a modicum of accuracy is a guessing game AFAIK. for the better part of a century their outward appearance hasn't changed much, in fact they're practically identical, but the threads differ, the amount of threads differ and the voltage they produce for a give temperature differ... smh.

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy 14 днів тому

      You also have to remember that the voltage to the gauge will change the reading as well as the resistance range within the sensor itself. The gauges can also be adjusted as well, but for most people they should probably not try to.

    I’m rewiring two MGBs. Each car has NO WIRING HARNESS. I can not figure out where to start…. So, based upon this tutorial, could I proceed to 1. put the firewall fresh air vents in first, 2. then fish the wiring harness through from the cabin to the engine bay. 3. Then sort the front out before starting on the dash. To this end, 4. Can I cut the harnesses to make snap in connections to the dash? It would allow me to wire the dash (rebuilt gauges and switches) on the bench, mount/install it in the car, before attaching it to the powered loom.. just an idea because I’m confused by diagrams.

    • @americanpatriot2422
      @americanpatriot2422 22 дні тому

      I would not recommend cutting the harnt. You will only invite major electrical issues and possible fire. The manufacturer would have done it to save assembly time if it was safe. The connection points , the more possibilities of corrosion and electrical problems. Just take your time and you will do just fine. If possible take pictures of an other MGB so you can compare where the wires are routed. Good luck.

      Your cars must be ‘71 and older ones as those don’t have separate dash harnesses, but those don’t have the fresh air vents unless you are dealing with a home market car. They are a little bit more of a pain to do, but not as bad as you might think. Get it in place and everything hooked up under bonnet, then do the dash last. With the steering column not bolted in place you can lay the dash face down on it (with a towel or something to prevent scratches) and either set the other side on the passenger seat, or support it with a cardboard box or the like. Then you have access to wire it up (though not terribly comfortably)

    I had to re-wire my 77 B back in February this year. Took 3 days of lying in a puddle under the car. I replaced all 3 major looms after the reverse lights never worked and the ignition circuit burnt out. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I laid the new one out and used the wiring diagrams and labelled EVERYTHING. Meant the hardest part was pushing the harness from the inside to the engine bay.

    From what i understand, one difference between brake clean and carb clean/starting fluid (among many other things) is that the latter two have oils/lubricants in them which, as you mentioned in the video, happen leave behind a residue. thus, i am of the opinion that for use as a starting fluid, brake clean should never be used, as it strips necessary engine oil from the cylinder walls, valve guides, etc without replacing it, which could cause premature wear. I’m no expert and i’m not sure how bad it really is to use brake clean as a starting fluid, and i, like everyone else, have used brake clean as starter fluid in a pinch, but i never would recommend it and avoid it at all costs. anyways good stuff as always, thank you for the informational and entertaining content you produce

    • @mgbgtguy

      Basically with solvents, the slower, they dry the more residue they’re gonna leave behind. That’s why my solvent tank leaves so much more residue than carburetor cleaner and brake cleaner leaves so much less. For the most part solvents are generally petroleum based. I don’t think starting an engine with brake cleaner is going to do any damage, now if you want to run it on brake cleaner for any length of time, that might be a different story
