where on earth did that garage get that price for repairs they quoted from? I can only assume they didn't want the job so put a stupid price tag on it so the owner would go elsewhere.

Yeah, it's called a PFO offer, for "please go away"

The exorbitant price was because they did not want to deal with the body preservative all over the underside. That was an easy brake job. Well done! It is always better to be safe with brakes and do them right and be thorough. I would rather walk away from a car when I stop it than have a tree or oncoming truck do it.😊

Even though there seems no rust in some corners etc it is always wise to give it an extra layer of anti rust coating!

Gotta give a thumbs up for the Schrodinger reference if nothing else! I've a Citroen DS, the ultimate in Schrodinger's rust - the rust you can see isn't the rust you need to worry about. Volvo 440s do nothing for me, but I've got a Ford Galaxy that does nothing for me either, but I've had it almost eight years and I can't think what I'd replace it with. Sometimes (always?) you need a car on the fleet that just works and does everything you need a car to do. This could be your one - safe, solid, reliable. Leaves the other cars to be fun, or more fun, knowing you've got old faithfull for all the dull routine, family stuff.

Growing up with Volvos, 140s and 240s, I don't really rate these cars. I find them comfortable and very boring, but seeing this car so healthy still makes me happy. It's a Volvo after all. I want it to live. Good thing this car found itself in your garage, instead of at the scrapyard.

For a 400 series Volvo, this is remarkably solid. It's great to see it looked after and I'm glad you have saved this car. I have a volvo 480 and now I want a 440 like this, too! 😂😂

The dangers of removing trim panels, and finding out what level of rusticles they're harbouring... :P

in my opinion, I think the original mechanic deliberately overpriced the work needed because he didn't want to do the work.

Delighted to see a relative absence of rust. It seems like a very genuine, solid car.

We have 4 volvo 440s - first getting one in 1991- wheel arches are a pain and the mud trap at the rear wheel arch ensures efficient rusting...

I commented on the video where the rust was first discussed, that theres a variable quality degree of different rust treatment centres.
Now that we hace seen some of the interior treatment spots, its a pretty well done treatment. Cudos!

Superposition in quantum computers, it's a brilliant analogy. Schrodingers rust, it's simultaneously solid, corroded and waxed until you look. Schrodingers theory was based on a cat but I'm not sure this Volvo has one? I haven't seen the lambda badge on it? I like this car, it's a great advert for waxing a chassis, it works!

You never need to leave old brake fluid in the bleeder since a 500ml bottle is the proper amount for most cars to fully replace the fluid. I buoild my own bleeder from a small 12v tire filler that was not fit for purpose and some household leftovers.

Just going by the rear drum brakes of my Dacia/Renault, I would assemble shoes and springs and then put the whole thing on as a unit. That has made doing rear brakes a doddle.

Det med at spilde bremsevæske ud af en slange eller rør . træd din bremsepedal 3 til 5 cm ned og lad den blive der under reparation . så spilder du ingenting . eller meget lidt .
