  • The mission with the Volvo is to give it a fresh MOT...
Hopefully for less then the 10.000Euros quoted by a garage....

Congratulations on a great success.. The Volvo is fit and happy again.. You fixed it on a shoestring budget and put in the work yourself. I 100 percent agree that some garages just don't see work on older cars as viable. I have experienced garages being quite rude about older cars even so far as openly saying "just scrap it and buy something else"! To me this is ridiculous. My daily drive is an old 1999 Volvo V70 T5. This car is from the last millennium when cars were still being built to last. My Volvo has never left me stranded, has carried out an immense amount of work, always lets me know that something is going to need changing well in advance.

Well done!! Garages like that are why so many good cars like that end up in scrapyards, such a waste!! Another thing is crazy road tax here in the uk, that 440 would cost £345 for one year of road tax!!! The government and unscrupulous garages are leading to the loss of so many ‘young classics’ here in the uk…very sad.

Well done on a good job Seppo! Like many of your subscribers, I think you are correct about the previous garage not wanting the work. If the MOT inspectors tell you your car is in great condition, you know you have a good car. Even though I live in England, I would buy and drive that car with no worries at all.

Great work Seppo. Definitely worth an ask to see if the previous owner wants it back!

Agreed! That feels right. He might have kept the car if the repair work had been estimated at a lower cost.

5:20 No they would not have done a better job than you. NO WAY! If they are inflating the price because they do not want to do the job. They would have bodged the repair.
It would help if you gave yourself better credit for your work... Do you remember that sunroof repair that you did! It was perfect. Your welding and rust repair is excellent. I would have you do my car if I lived near you. Never doubt the work you do, it is fantastic, my friend. Really good.

I still have my 1990 440 DL. It has run appox 230.000 km. I don't know exactly because the odometer broke down at 180.000. But that's the only major problem. It runs perfectly.

I like these. Quintessential teacher's car. Must have been dealer maintained. Or profoundly extensively welded.

Oh boy, what a minter you've got there! I would so get one of these to bring back to life just like you did here, if I had some money burning a a hole in my pocket. My uncle bought an 89' 1.7 circa 99 and had it for a good few years so when I got my license in 07, he was letting me go out with it by myself and I remember driving it was a joy ride. Very light on its feet but at the same time soft and boaty ride. The 90-95ish hp engine was plenty enough to have fun at lower speeds. No 300+ hp or sport suspension needed. I was lucky too, cause my dad didn't want to let me drive around in his car which was a 92 Astra estate with th 1.7 NO turbo diesel and "jawdropping" 57hp and no power steering. That thing was an unkillable work horse but 0-100 could rob you of a nice afternoon and shifting gears was like stirring a bucket of butter. Oh and NVH in that Astra felt like you are crash landing a WW2 plane in a forest 😂 So last year in high scool, I got to drive my buddies and couple of girlfriends around in the cool and smooth 440 instead of getting sh*t on for showing up in the ol' reliable. 😂Pure nostalgia machine to me. Thanks for extending her life!

I drove one of these as a "fimabil" back in 1990/91 in Sweden. I liked it very much and I think the design still works in 2024.

Very nice. These are getting rarer by the day, there is 152 left on the road from a peak of 112k in 1996.

The 440 my mum bought new in 1992 seems to have disappeared from the roads in 2004. I’m glad to see that this one has survived for so long and looks still to have a long life ahead of it

that €10k estimate is just indicative of how a lot of modern garages are these days, if it's anything more than just clearing codes on an OBDII reader, they don't want to know, chase the easy jobs, but shun the real work with ridiculous estimates, proper garages (one I'd recommend subbing to, 6D Diesels, they do real welder-wielding work!) will do the jobs, but lazy garages, nope, they want an easy life...

Not sure if your wife still drives the C1 but in your position with wife and new baby daughter + Volvo safety for me this would be nailed on to be my wife's daily. You ant your nearest and dearest in as safe a situation as you can have.

Nice work and great to see another classic car saved. Can I ask about fuel economy, I recently watched a video on here, a volvo promotional film selling the 440 to Fleet operators and it claimed this car can do over 45mpg at 56mph. Is it really that frugal on fuel? Also it's still a nice modern looking car all these years later, I like it and hope it finds a good new home 👍.
