The tolerance on the clutch cable is 1 millimeter, not 1 centimeter, so I am afraid you are way off :D

I had a 1990 440GL with 1.7 carburettors engine. Fantastic vehicle, never let me down or failed to start. It had covered a little over 456,000 miles when I sadly sent it to the scrapyard in the sky.

    That's classic Volvo.
Buying position - it'll do a job. Price is okay.
    Week 1 - it's very comfortable.
    Week 2 - it's a lot better looking that I first thought.
Week 3 - this interior has really grown on me.
Week 4 - it's quicker than I thought it would be.
Week n - I'll fight you before I let this car go!

I have been putting grease on just about everything for 35 years now whitout any problems, so you just carry on greasing😂❤

I've just done the exact same brake work on my Astra. New discs and pads all round, and a complete change of brake fluid too. I did my fluid change using a vacuum pump. 130 and 100ml sucked out for the rear cylinders, and 30ml sucked out for the fronts. Good work.

Always a good idea to change the brake fluid when you are doing the brakes at least bleed the caliper out by opening the bleed nipple when pushing the piston back in. Fresh brake fluid increases the service life of the caliper. It's a service item that often gets forgotten on older cars along with the coolant.

I had a 460 many years ago and ended up with a couple of 850 T5s after. Really liked this era of Volvo

Its funny how makers can have a purple patch then lose the plot. Does success go to their collective heads?

@@darrenwilson8042it'"s more like corporate greed. Just look at Mercedes from 1999 onward. Nowhere near as good as the older cars. Same for BMW. plastic radiator end tanks (e46)
And Volvo after the 850 didn't get any better either. (Because of the Ford penny pinchers)
I switched from Volvo to Toyota and now Lexus. Great quality. I never looked back.

I had a 1989 Volvo 440 GLE, a great car that I put high mileage on driving from Scotland to the Midlands twice a month. With no drama or issues for 3 years.

Looks like you got just as much rain as we did in the UK on Wednesday, I was out in it (no, not as the failure of a prime miniature announcing his effing off at last, I was out taking & collecting one of the cats for her neutering op!) and got thoroughly soaked!!! :S
Makes having a warm, dry garage to work in very appealing, that's for sure... :D

Love this 440. Had a 460 myself and I liked it so much I got an S60 after, even though I'm a Citroen guy. Watching you work on it brings me back good memories

Lever the piston back before I take the caliper off by putting a large screwdriver between the pad and the blind side of the caliper

Totally with you on greasing the face of the hub before fitting the brake disc. I hate fighting with stuck discs! I've had to get medieval with them in the past, not good! I normally just apply a very thin layer of brake grease.

  • @MrToxicSkittle
    @MrToxicSkittle Місяць тому

I agree with greasing the surface the discs sit on - might not have to take off the disc for the rest of your ownership, or maybe even the car’s lifetime, but it’s just so nice when the person before you did it!
My mini has failed the MOT twice on bad wheel cylinders, typically because I had to do the MOT immediately after taking it out of winter storage. Both times a light tap with a hammer freed up the wheel cylinders - seems like yours were too far gone for that though!

I just love the 400 series, my 460 unfortunately suffered a lot of rot. I'm not on the 4th auto gearbox and it has failed, im doing a engine swap soon, from F3P+T to F4R+T...reliable controlled power is what I want! The turbo versions tend to be a bit quicker than stated too

I like to use no hloves at all. Much more feeling with the material and tools. Already for 35 years and still going strong. Tried it with disposable gloves, bit i just can't get use to it.

Another quality (Lucas) Girling front caliper with its logo on display! For the nerds, this caliper design was known as the Colette and it was arguably the best single piston sliding caliper design of its era. With that design, Girling were able to finally “brake” into (sic) the US market when this caliper was fitted to the 1993 Lincoln Continental.

I simply like the design of this 440.
Its both modern and classic Volvo before 1990..👍
Sadly its unpopulær because "not a real Swedish volvo" its heritage and production in the Netherlands and with Renault engines.
So not many is still on the road sadly.
A 460 or an Turbo edition. Very very nice car.
Nyeste "pæneste' og nok bedste mest pålidelig daily driver for familien Seppo!
Den tror jeg ikke du får lov at sælge Seppo "om kæresten først får prøvet den😉" 😅

I hate to make this comment because i love your videos but: i think you got the clutch adjustment wrong. You have 105 -85 = 20mm. The Haynes says 30mm +/- 1mm (so 29 - 31mm). Younare 10mm out of spec. Or am i missing something here?
