- Sebecids enjoyed a brief era of success as top predators, but today, they were long assumed to be extinct in the known world. However, in 2014, a species of terrestrial crocodile belonging to this clade was confirmed by the Assembly naturalists and named Ammut after the entity in the ancient Egyptian religion.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

Sebecids are one of the coolest things that ever existed. I highly approve of the name you chose for this fella. Definitely fitting and in my opinion an underrated character in the ancient Egyptian mythology.

No, mekosuchus may survive in the Khalin Island. Also the Cuban Crocodile is more terrestrial, and it is the most endurant of all crocodiles, can gallop at prey when on land

Imagine if it even dissolved various earth machines and creates hideous amalgamation’s of various animals and machines on kaimere. For example imagine a giant lobster with excavator components on various parts of its body?
Or a cheeta with f-15 eagle thrusters and wings as a few examples.

Absolutely! If it doesn't have any natural predators, it's an apex predator. Nobody's top monarch, but an apex predator nevertheless

The Ammut is certainly unique among crocs of Kaimere and I'm very impressed by its ecology and habits. Just goes to show that just when you think you know Kaimere, throw in a new species and you'll see just how spectacular, abundant and dynamic it is.
Steve Irwin was an idol for me too and I'm proud to say he would've found these Kaimeran crocodiles to be impressive as we do, and that his family is still carrying on the family tradition of looking after the animals of our own world, including the top river predators. My boys survived! They may be odd, and unlikely, but they made it! I love the Ammut so much! I'm trying to utilize a similar animal as a companion for a new campaign. This series has been so wonderful Keenan!
Now that we have litopterns, notoungulates, sebecids, phorusrhacids, and sloths, the next South American Miocene clade to be highlighted just *has* to be either the glyptodonts or the sparassodonts! Maybe one day I can sponsor something...

i love this episode, sebecids are one of the most overlooked family of crocodilians and have only recently began to become well known.
if the ammut was introduced to the forests of qajar or the jungles next to the seridic wetlands would they be able to find a niche and hold it?
Probably not. A lot of competition there, and these guys having higher metabolic demands than true crocs means they would have to make some major changes to compete. Either slow their metabolism to need less food, or ramp it up to go against big cats and dromaeosaurs.

I had not considered the part about the crescent jungles having "moss covering every surface" or I would have made the first piece a lot more green. It's a really cool biome, perfect for a really cool crocodylomorph!

My absolute pleasure! They're gorgeous pieces. As for the moss, don't sweat it. There are undoubtedly dry seasons and regions. Mostly humid and mossy doesn't mean that's the case everywhere.

Have been enjoying your croc videos. I have been interested in croc evolution since learning of their 4 chambered heart, cerebral cortex, diaphragm and vestigial air sacs. Stomatosuchus is whacked!
1) It was a very good final episode for this mini-series about the Crocodiles of Kaimere as a whole ! Very neat conclusion to end with a video explaining a clade and showing one of its extant relatives being very much the best of the land and water worlds, the perfect match of both.
As indeed, the idea of a crocodile which is a crocodile but entirely live on land and thrive on it is a odd view at first.
2) Still, it must be sad that, as these videos spoke about species within or near the Known World region, I hope that others videos about the species from the realms VERY far from it will one day be sponsorized !
As more we go farer from the Known World, more older and weird crocodiles must look, and represents really high potential of evolutionary creativity for them !
3) I like the two fanarts of the Ammut of Noah Creutziger displayed here ! Really showing this animal and its preys items in which it share it kingdom under the best view !

This was so cool. What was your favorite part of researching for this episode? Do you think you'll ever do a video about the assembly?
Thank you! I'd say my favorite part was in studying the integument of notosuchians. Finding out just how nuanced and unknown it is. A lot of paleo enthusiasts (and I include myself here) are in the middle of the Dunning-Kruger effect: we know a lot of surface stuff about prehistoric animals but don't always appreciate just how much is inference, so can leave with a more confident understanding than we actually understand. It's so common to take the parsimonious interpretation and assume it's reliable to say we know. We don't. Something I've really been trying to check myself on lately.
Sure, I have to make decisions in how I'm going to depict animals, but I don't want to contribute to misinformation. It's possible sebecids had more visibly smooth skin. It's also possible they only had smooth torsos or even how thick the skin would have been. We don't know. We have some good ideas based on related animals according to a single (very good imo) study, but we don't know with absolute certainty, and I wouldn't want folks to see my art and think that's definitely how they looked.
As for an Assembly video, I indeed hope so!

Pretty damn cool! What a beast it would be to throw down with!! King Kong style! (Though I'd probably die) truly a unique animal. Perhaps I could try to squeeze in the Kaimerean Ammit while making a more mythological one. It's hard for me to type in letters how much I love kaimere, and that ain't ass kissin! It's true admiration!
Sebecosuchians are only have one relict in the known world, the sebecid Ammut, but in Kairul, sebecosuchians is much more diverse, with Baurusuchids from the Tyrant Dynasty and sebecids from the Oligocene Harvest
And also the notosuchians which include the sphagesaurids, uruguaysuchids and notosuchids are present in Kairul
It is indeed probable that they have related taxa from prior harvests
it may not have the same colossal size as its extinct relatives, but I'm happy that at least one sebecid survived in modern kimere! Having said that, I would like to ask some questions about the Ammut
1) are attacks against people very frequent?
2) Is it known whether the people of the jungles of the Eastern Crescent Peninsula tried to keep them as pets?
3) is it possible that in a few million years ammoths could reach larger dimensions than they currently have?
1. Unknown. There are peoples who live there, but they are independent clans who were not interviewed by the Assembly. That said, people aren't common and the ammut didn't seem comfortable near settlements, so it probably only happens occasionally.
2. Also unknown as the Assembly didn't make contact.
3. Under the right circumstances sure, but not in this environment. Their smaller size is a key to their success, not something holding them back.

ever since I have heard of Barinasuchus from CHimerasuchus's video on it I absolutely loved the Sebecid family and when Dentaneosuchus was described last year it was so exiting to add another to this fantastic group of crocs. how we discover more about them in the future as well as more complete fossils.

For the Man : Yes, Modern Crocodiles (Crocodylia, aka Crocodiles, Gharials, Alligators and Caimans) and all Archaic Crocodiles (all others families within Neosuchia and Crocodyliformes) are very derived members of their entire clade when compared to the Triassic Members which came first and represent the basal state of the group.
For the Woman : on the other hand, Neosuchia have evolved around 196 mya, Crocodylia have evolved around 94 mya ago, and with that Crocodiles almost as a whole have obtain and take their generic and successful bodyplan during the Early Jurassic around 196 mya.
From which they barely changed in general shapes (only differing from each others by minors points).
Both dates are VERY long times/periods and enough to consider them as living fossils/panchronic species or timeless animals.
So calling them under these terms is 100%.
+ THESE Crocodiles (the semi-aquatic ambush hunter lineage, dominant and most numerous than the Notosuchian or Sphenosuchia on land) have lived alongside dinosaurs from almost all their evolutionnary history (Dinosaurs are only slightly older than THESE crocodiles, as Dinosaurs only appeared really at the during the Late Triassic),
So saying that Crocodiles as we view them are the same as they were when they lived alongside dinosaurs is also a truth in many extents.

The Eastern Jungles are a very comforting place. Despite none of the main players being alive today on earth, it feels like a place that could exist on our planet today without a hitch (The aliveness of the place is also helped by the excellent guest illustrations)
1. When you create hypothetical extinct species, do you believe they could possibly be real? I could see Sebecocyon existing in real life.
2. Given this took place in 2014, are there any events in Kaimere that explicitly take place in the future or would that be too speculative?
3. How come the Ammut was not described if the Library had specimens? It seems to me like the two organizations don't cooperate that much. Is that true is or is it simply just a "thing in vault we forgot" situation?
Absolutely! The pieces were wonderful and do a lot of work to help fill out the environment.
1. That's always the goal. With the exception of the homunculi, I try to make all of my animals plausible.
2. I have no intention of ever exploring future Kaimere.
3. They cooperate, but the library and Assembly both have their respective secrets, and don't give open access to each other. The Assembly has been able to investigate a lot of the more public aspects of the library, but their vaults are restricted.

So what other relics still dwell in these jungles?
Don't have a full list but will be several from the first two post-extinction harvests before the portal moved a bit further south to its current location.
In Kairul, the baurusuchids, have live with dinosaurs in the Tyrant Dynasty is better adapted for the open forests than the sebecids, so many baurusuchids may fare well in Kairul.
At least they survived, and are the apex predator of their ecosystem....
Speaking of which, how exactly did robust monarchs outcompete basal megaraptorans? How did robust monarchs fare against amphicyonids, Arvelith dromaeosaurs, basal megaraptorans, and sebecids in direct combat?
In the very arid period of the known world 8-6 mya, the robust monarchs arose to power. Their massive torsos packed with air sacs meant their respiration was far more efficient, a great benefit in more open territory. Basal megaraptorans still have plenty of representatives, especially in wetland habitats where that efficiency wasn't as beneficial, but in that time of Kaimere's history, better respiration gave them an edge.
I have loved all the new species of crocs introduced to the world. I do have one unrelated question though, is the Darun still canon or were they reworked into the Western Carnosaur?

After watching the entire Croc series, i have simple questions.
1) among all the pseudosuchians of earth, why only the semi-acquatic ambush predatory forms survive in modern times, while some terrestrial and even the herbivorous forms didn't?
2) it Is possible that they would be other surviving species of sebecids, at least outside of the know world?
1. I don't know if this is known with much certainty. It may be as simple as mammals being better suited for the niches as the planet got more arid.
2. Possible, but I won't commit to that as a definite yes.

Fact: the largest reptile living today, saltwater crocodiles have been found up in trees. Though the largest animal found on trees are elephants.

Just coming back to rewatch, and I just had a thought... does the Thompson's Goatbird have specially adapted scales on the bottoms of their feet to help them grip on uneven ground? Seems like a useful feature to have for a dinosaur that lives in rugged highland forests.
They do indeed! That clade (including the chianash) have large thick somewhat rubbery scales to help grip. Not as capable of vertical climbing as goats but still helpful in their environment

How do Kaimerens classify animals? Are all flying animals birds? Are whales and mosasaurus fish?
Depends on the culture and level of education. A rural farmer in the highlands of the Empire isn't going to have the same terms as someone in the great library a hundred miles away, and the Great Library has different levels of understanding as the Imperial capitol and academies in the Free-States and Republic.
In the common tongue, bird is the translation of a term for anything with feathers. Fish is usually translated as a general term for anything strictly aquatic.

Do you think it’s possible for an animal to use its tongue and the roof of its mouth to process plant material to some extent, or have I truly lost the plot?

That's what I described the dicynodonts of Kaimere doing, so I certainly think it's possible. A flexible and powerful tongue with a rough surface against a rugose palate seems viable to me. Maybe not for woody plants but definitely soft to medium fare.

I'm wondering why exactly the assembly wants kaimere to remain secret
While there’s some incentive for themselves (don’t trust humans to not throw witches in camps if we found out about them) but mostly secrecy is a condition by which Kaimerans are willing to work with the Assembly. Basically if they want to maintain relations with Kaimere they must abide that condition.

@@Coelacanth_yes They have seen how humans interact with each other which has been especially violent and prone to subjugation in the past few centuries. We're so much more abundant and powerful than them. I don't think it's dumb at all. Secrecy is their best defense it's not as if they could fend off an invasion from humans in the 1800's, much less today.
