I find it awesome that the saltwater croc is found as a sigil among Kaimeran peoples. Also, love the attention given to gharials and caimans as they are lesser known than crocs and gators. I really love how protective mother crocodylians are of their young. Can't wait to hear you talk about giant crocs! Oh, by the way, did you know a group of crocodiles is called a float?

I love the Odaga and Wug! Salt blasting mini godzillas and semi-domesticated turtle crocs are an unexpected and welcome surprise! I can't wait for next week with the Hrugetaur (what a beast).
Really makes one appreciate the diversity of even just the crocodilian crown group in their hey-day, not to mention psuedosuchia as a whole!
You and me both! Felt important to include a few non-eusuchians, even if most went extinct 15 mya in the known world and the only pseudosuchians to reliably repopulate came from Earth.
I like that for this episode you chosed as main music one that give the feeling of calm, no stress and chilling and before everything is typically the one use to made think in a way or another to the Mississippi River or the Florida's Everglades !
This video is maybe not focused on Alligators, to which such music is merged with, but still for the most part fitting for crocs as a whole.

Seridic wetlands is so rich in crocodilians, that they even have a mammal croc in the Renzhuyo!
I said this many times, but we need an updated documentary about Crocodylomorphs since all we have is When Crocs ate Dinosaurs. I think the fictional documentary Dragons a Fantasy Made Real is a great start for influence since it started in the Mesozoic and went into the Cenozoic plus Crocs are kind of like the real dragons of are world.

I guess that it's justly mean as a direct and obvious modern analog to it.
Keenan do often that. Creating species which look completely almost identical to famous prehisotric icons and fitting the same niche than these in order to have these prehistoric icons in a way while it not possible to have them directly.
Like he did with the Bearded Beaver which is the kaimeran version of the famous Castoroides.

Now I have the image in my head of herds of pronghorn, gazelles, wildebeest, equids, thescelosaurs, elasmarians, and other medium-sized to large sized animals found in the Houze Prairie crossing a river during a migration, while crocodiles move in to grab unsuspecting targets.😊

Just imagine one of those Odaga getting a mutation that lets it fire off a concentrated beam of corrosive acid at there enemy’s and them getting even bigger with more back spines that resemble Godzillas birsal plats . Then what do we call them . Godrasuchus ?
In kaimere they got possessed by magic and become demon
Their size will rapidly growing.
The idea of a Demon/Mutants Odago due to magic like Vaskalamaldus the Raven King was is indeed a very concerning and scary idea to ever think about.
But True Demons/Mutant animals are, almost universally, carnivores.
As the mutation itself leading to such creatures is a Magic Hive entering the body of another animal, generaly the Hive of an animal which is consumed by another one, and them enter in conflict with the local Hive and destroy it and modify its new Host afterward.
But much of the time, the local Hive manage to eradicate the intruder one, making such intances rares.
So unless an Odaga eat another animal and even here the intruder hive manage to kick out the Odaga's initial one, there few to worry about such scary possibility.
Well what if it ate a plant that hade a dangerous the Magic that turned Vaskalamaldus into the raven king . What would happen if we say the new hive of magic was unsuccessful at getting rid of the invader colony . How would this transfomers the Odaga and make is more like a kaiju .
@@Bake-kurijra So, as far Keenan have established things, plants to not host hives of magic inside them (only animals).
So even here it's just impossible to have a Demon/Mutant Herbivore, unless it eat meat.
All herbivores actually are encline to eat meat if they get the opportunity and if they had really the need at the same time.
Herbivores eat meat when they need additionnal nutrients, but if they have a piece of meat in front of them while they have no need for these nutrients now, so they will not most of the time eat it.
Herbivores eating directly meat is already rare, as well than a animal becoming a Demon/Mutant, so it's twice rarer actually that a herbivore will become one.
Don't say that never occured, but not a very, very, VERY common sight.
As for turning it into a Kaiju ?
That depend what you want by saying this.
As, one, even solely Godzilla's franchise have show us a tons of diverse kaiju creatures VERY differents in term of power, strength and resilience level between each others (the weakest being the Giant Eagle if I don't say mistake, only dying after one single normal blast of Godzilla's atomic breathe).
And, two, even if a Demon/Mutant is updated by a quite significant margin compared to a typical specimen of its species thank to the hive Magic's mutation, that don't made it invincible and unkillable by any means.
There plenty of mutations and different degrees/levels of mutations that can occur in a Demon/Mutant animal. With very varying results.
Not all Leopards becoming a Demon/Mutant with end up the same. Some being stronger and more resilient, others retaining the same strenght and fragility than in their intial state.
Whatever, a kaimeran Demon/Mutant will always being millions less strong or resilient compared to any Toho monsters or others Kaiju.
Because at best, a Demon/Mutant can be twice or third the initial size before its mutation, but that not enough compared to a monster the size of a typical urban building (as start point to which we can safely assume a kaiju can be called as such).

I hope that one day someone will sponsor a video about the Crocodiles species living in the realms beyond the Known World such Permian Islands, kairul, or any landmasse able to host crocs species, to see more oancients and non-Eusuchian lineages.
As without surprises, the Known World and its directs neighbors regions are dominated by Modern Crocodiles/Eusuchian/Crocodylia species, from the Cenozoic. While the others regions farer are of course the realms of the more older lineages discusses in the first episode.
But its was still good to see that all of the 2 main lineages that are the Brevirostres (Alligatoroid, including Alligators and Caimans) and the Longirostres (Crocodyloid and Gharials/Gavialid) and the 4 types of modern/extant crocodiles we have today have all numerous representatives on Kaimere as a whole, and both in good current and stable diversity.
And the Odaga and Wug clades were still good inclusions as well, and now can be considered more as "hints" or "teases" for future and more crazy, wild species inhbaiting the realms beyond the Known World.
Both being, sort of, "Sneak Peaks" of their respetives groups !
Exceptional episode. Really loved this one especially love the Salties absolutely dominating once introduced. Would you consider Salties the hippo equivalent of Crocodiles 😅. Looking forward to the Giant Crocodiles episode next week..
haha yeah I think it's a fair analogue! Hippos are probably not going to retain their dominion in future developments. They're much more grass specialized than I initially realized so may struggle a bit with the comparative abundance of gymnosperms. Time will tell. However, salties are absolutely thriving to a point of taxonomic frustration
@@TalesofKaimere Even if their success will be a little decrease/drop, Hippos will still pretty much remain the same and still retaining a significant success and position compared to most others megafauna mammals or just fauna within the Known World.
Because aside food limiting their numbers, not much can restrict them to be the almost invincible hell beasts their are known to be.
For the most part, I think the "Hippos of Kaimere" episode will remain pretty correct in term of Lore and informations.
I bet many of these crocodiles and caymans weren't happy to face the hippos that came during the latter harvests, especially considering both behemoths and sonjakus, those must be an absolute nightmare for most crocodilian species
I love your worldbuilding on this fascinating world you have, as a fan, I have some cool ideas for creatures you can add to your world that will give it some flavor
• Lambeosaurines- with the extinction of most large hadrosaurs, Lambeousaurine dinosaurs would have diversified as kaimeres main saurian herbivores along with drakes. In fact they would most likely fill in and exist in the same niche as thescelosaur drakes, similar to how wildebeest and zebras fill a similar grazing niche
•Brontotheres-brontotheres could make a return and make them a sort of newly rediscovered species to kaimeran scientists
•Therizinosaurs- I think therizinosaurs would be awesome to have more of in kaimere and they would compete with ground sloths for a browsing niche, so it would be interesting to see the dynamic
More ceratopsians- there could be still some species of land based ceratopsian that filled the niche of older ceratopsians like triceratops and styracosaurus. They could have a predator prey relationship with the megaraptorans and mammalian predators. Maybe even give them the unique behavior of a large migration like with wildebeest

I'm patiently waiting for something in Kaimere that breathes fire.
It's could be entirely possible. Like VikasRao with its "Draconology" spec evo series managed to bring in the realm of the biological possibilities.
And the way he imagined and find to made realistic and viable fire-spitting creature being free to everyone to use (he gived his greenlight to even just copy-pastes it so he's bothered by the fucking number of dumbs typical fire-breathing dragons represenations in pop culture).
But don't think Keenan will ever take this route given that he want most things of Kaimere being differents from our general views of such subjects.
Kaimere really is a world of crocs. Hard to imagine how many different lineages are chilling in the sheer enormity of Kairul. Now hopefully someday temnospondyls get their love too.
1. I believe you've mentioned giant (bigger than nile) crocodiles in the Houze before. Are these a separate unknown species or some breed of something in the episode?
2. Given the diversity of caimans and other Crocs in their habitat, what's the biggest croc a Renzhuyo is willing to duel?
3. Have the First Children incorporated the Odaga salt spit into their creations, perhaps with different liquids?
4. Given the Odaga and Sloth Croc now have pretty different faces, is that an intentional design choice?
5. Are Chelysuchids found on the Permian Islands along with their champsocnid cousins?
6. Something I was wondering: Given our seven seas, how does Assembly divide the oceans of Kaimere?
1. Zhen and Han Zhu sometimes venture pretty far upriver. It was likely a reference to them.
2. They probably tackle average male Seridic crocodiles, estuarine salties, and black caiman, but the largest bulls of all three species hunt renzhuyo.

4. No. The sloth croc will someday get refined to be more similar, but it's serviceable art for now. Will keep the crests though.
5. No. The champsocnids swam there.
6. I haven't finalized all of them, but within the known world, there are 3 seas: Great Khalin Sea south of Arvel, Crescent Sea in the Crescent, and the Trakaiam.

Good shit man! The wug looks like something straight out of Peter Jackson's King Kong, like a more heavily armored plant eating relative of the foetodon. The Odaga is another impressive beast, and I love the fact that Kaimereans know about godzilla. Dude's so unstoppable that he's even known on another planet that( I'm assuming ) doesn't even have movies! And I must say I like your depiction of the monster king, especially the tail fluke, I'm surprised that no official godzillas have that yet. You've definitely got a good selection of Crocodilians so far, plenty for me to craft in the future.
Kaimeran don't know about Godzilla and indeed, cinematography isn't a thing on Kaimere.
Some Kaimeran working directly at the Assembly obviousely must have at least heard about it a little, as they are closer to Earth's related stuff than others.
But obviousely don't much care about it (because why being interesting in a thing if the core medium showing it don't exist on your planet ?).
Remember that the Earth's human members of the Assembly who name and denominate both scientifically and vernaculary the species of Kaimere. Not the Kaimeran themselves.
And, like in our World, they have fun to sometime name animal out of our own pop culture.
Indeed, it would be an interesting addition.
Given that, ironically, Godzilla have actually zero physical adaptations to swim or move in water since its very creation.
Being just a retro late 1880's-1925's theropod dinosaur just being in water most of the time.
Animal with zero adaptations to a marine life can perfectly swim with ease and on long distances.
Basically what Elephants are as a prime example.
Or the famous long-necked Tanystropheus which actually was a regular swimmer from the recent studies on it.
But they are both not permanent marine critters.
While Godzilla is mean to be an occasional land-dweller species.
So should be much like Modern Crocs or Sharks and have physical adaptations to swim over seas.
If deinosuchus was introduced in kaimere(in regions like the seredic wetlands or the wetlands of kairul) with a decently sized population, could it outcompete the natives crocs and semi aquatic megaraptorans?
Probably not. There's established populations and there's nothing really special about Deinosuchus compared to Purussaurus and Eborsuchus already in the area. I mean they might do alright but they have tremendous competition cut out for them and surely either they or one of the other two would go extinct. Purussaurus and Eborsuchus are already pretty competitively exclusive to certain niches and regions and that would be further stressed with a fourth giant croc in the seridic wetlands.
@@TalesofKaimere what about in the wetlands of kairul? When you made a video on the mega continent about the semi aquatic abelisaurid their was no particularly large crocidilian in the video and I belive it was the Fisher croc that was in it

Hey Keenan, I love the video so far, I got a question, sorry if the question is a bit off topic but, how do lions, homotherium and leopards seemingly coexist in the titan gardens when all three seemingly share the same niche being tree cashers and hunters of small-medium size ungulates? Is there niche partitioning going on or do they all prefer different terrain or is it human interference? (making leopards very rare or extinct where lions thrive, etc)
If I remember correctly, it had something to do with the fact that
1) leopards, as they are on earth, are much more adaptable than the other big cats, leading to my next point
2) leopards were already firm in their niche as a smaller predator, whereas lions and tigers needed to adapt, but were less successful (remember, leopards can sustain themselves on even insects, the other panthera require far more than that), and the tigers and lions were brought into even greater conflict with the dromaeosaurs and megaraptorans. Leopards simply stayed in their niche as a much smaller predator within the shadow of the large predators, and thus were not as affected. (And also because of reason 1 earlier)

@@junotus198 I was asking how lions, leopards and homotherium can share the same niche in the titan gardens without one of them outcompeting the other 2, leopards are notorious for outcompeting other medium size cats in kaimere and lions and homotherium do the exact same thing that the leopard does to my knowledge in the exact same area. I was wondering how they can coexist so easily if they all seemingly share the same niche. This also applies to pakardia too as lions, leopards and dire bobcats all seemingly have the same niche. Great question! Homotherium are more common in open forests where their cursoriality serves them well, leopards favor denser forests where their superior climbing is a great boon (although really leopards are just kinda everywhere), and lions are extremely rare in this habitat. Red panthers also live in the region but are generally restricted to wetlands and highlands. I have a decent amount of revamping due for the big cats as I've developed the project more and hope to clarify a lot of their niches then.

I’ve always found the carnivoran predators the most interesting in this project weirdly enough even though Earth’s non aquatic apex predatory niches are almost always dominated by carnivorans from Pleistocene ancestry. Leopards have seemingly been able to take over the known world over night, outcompeting other big cats their size or even larger, so I was surprised to find out that they coexisted with lions, homotherium and dire bobcats relatively peacefully despite how badly they’ve seemingly outcompeted every other cat that is not directly above them or below them. I can’t wait for the revamp for the large cats and everything in store for the future, this is probably my favorite spec evo project out there
@@nojorooney Leopards did not outcompeted any predators above or below them.
They just very adaptable to all context and were able to spread far and wide quickly almost everywhere in the Known World and on all Arvel and Ni'Khar (with potentially population in Kairul, who know ?) just because they fit in and use an ecological niche basically unique and never used before really in Kaimere's History or recent Times.
Remember, Leopards always brought their kills on trees to avoid others predators stealing them.
None others predators, aside the Thylacoleos species, behave like that.
So, there no surprise Leopards have zero competition and pressures from others animals for niches and food to worry about.
(before you may ask Thylacoleos and Leopards niche partition by targeting differents preys, with Thylacoleos hunting mainly large and robust animals that a Leopard with its significantly less powerfull and less cutting bite and teeth are unable to bring down).
Predators "above" the Leopard in term of trophic niche weren't outcompeted by it, as basically all of them are non-mammals predatory theropods, fitting niches and hunting games too differents in forms and sizes from the ones of the Leopard (the latter incapable to fit, hold and hunt) and against it in a direct face to face the Leopard can't really fight.
Regarding the species "below" it, here too, none of them were outcompeted by the Leopard. As even most big cats have adopted the same behavior than the Leopard to climb and hide in trees them and their kills, it's not as high in a similar level and fit niches still very differents.
And targeting differents preys.
Actually, on Kaimere, within the local setting of it established and posed by the presence of theropods as Medium/Vassals and Apex/Monarchs predators, the Leopard, Lion, Homotherium and Thylacoleo are both all togethers equals and at the exact same trophic level.
The one of Mesopredators/Knights.
(The Trophic Levels of the Arvel Lowlands slide is really good to give a niche picture of it).
They all manage to coexist without much problems by niche partitioning and herd targeting differents games and hunting grounds. As well than using differents ways and behavior to catch preys.
Homotherium and Lions hunt in more open forest parts of the Titan Gardens (remind that Titans Gardens and all the Lowlands of Arvel are a huge mosaic of sub-biomes), with Homotherium hunting small but fast games they take on active chases/pursuits (and able to cut pieces of flesh quickly to go with it in a safe place to eat it), and Lions hunting small but less cursorial games they take by ambush.
While Leopards, thank to their unique behavior, can hunt a higher range of preys and hunt larger games in general and leaving untouched the smaller games.
And inhabiting most habitats but always in higher concentration more than anything in the most forested covered areas.
Leopards will always prefer to inhabit more and more forested, and more densely covered as possible, habitats than more open and less covered ones.
As again : they need trees and much covers as possible as vital core points to made good ambush and to put as fast as possible their kills on it to avoid them being stolen by others predators.
(As even a Neotenic Lion such the ones find on the Lowlands of Arvel, or an Homotherium, would still be in a dominant position to steal and repel a Leopard from its kill).
While Thylacoleos overlap entirely in behavior to Leopards, competition is almost entirely avoided by targeting preys that a Leopard is unable to kill (such most Ground Sloths).
And the preys the Thylacoleos hunt aren't the same that the Homotherium and Lions hunt as well.
Avoiding competition with them as an effect.
The Red Panther, which here on Kaimere is basically just a Jaguar, inhabiting wet, swamps, marshes and highlands biomes/areas in which the others Big Cats don't usually frequent and hunt mainly semi-aquatic to aquatic games (without mentionning this specific species is among one of the very few mammalian predators to be able to hunt dinosaurs as regular preys). So its avoid also competition with all the others like that.
And in areas where it coexist with the Kaimeran Tiger Ndogash, in the Crescent Région, both interact and coexist like their analogs do currently on Earth.
In final, the Leopard did nothing much at all when it was introduced to Kaimere, and just continue the exact same things it ever did on Earth.
Being even pretty much blocked/stuck at its own ecological niche to some extents.
Because it can't go into others niches and will be unable to face competition from all others Big Cats or predators sharing its habitat.
As Leopards entering in conflicts with others predators and winning confrontations are completely unheard in our Earth.
So in Kaimere....
I know that was quite long, but hope that was able to made clearer your mind regarding the subject.
And remember that in our Pleistocene in Eurasia and North America, there several single formation were the number of medium-to-large carnivores coexisting togethers was quite high than it is today.
When will we learn more about the worlds beyond kaimere? I’ve been so curious about these since you mentioned them

I know this is a late comment but i just wanted to say you did an amazing job covering the clade that includes crocodiles despite being called Pseudosuchia. Jokes aside their diversity on kaimere really makes out world seem deeply lacking.
My question would be since this wasn't really touched on in the last two videos was how did crocodiles interact with Temnospondyls Chroniosuchians and carbosuchians groups and competition they never experienced to the same extent on earth
Thanks! The niche in the known world was dominated by crocs not because of any inherent advantage beyond being thrown into the niche after it was purged in unholy fire in the Dynastic Extinction

Haha yes yes they are
I don't know if any will be mentioned in the next episode or if they are among the already extinct groups, but I am curious about the fate of the following species (Or at least their possible descendants/relatives):
- Kaprosuchus.
- Anatosuchus.
- Laganosuchus.
I don't think any of those were harvested, and certainly don't have descendants in the known world. There is a clade of alligatoroids that convergently have pronounced teeth already seen in crocodiles so it looks kinda like Kaprosuchus, but so would any crocodile with the five sets of big teeth being pronounced.
I want to see the native trying to say Eustreptospondylus
calling them salties makes them sound like a savory snack when in actuality they snack on us.

That's part of it, but there's also multiple English spellings of a lot of Kaimeran words. Various documents will show Na'Khar and Ni'Khar for example, as the Imperial word is Ni'Khar and Amanetran generally leans more toward the a. I tend to favor the local pronunciation of given words, but since the Assembly works most with the Free-States, that does give some bias. A lot of animals from Ni'Khar have the species epithet of nakarensis, for example.

One question: you have said several times before that the Moduru lizard is the apex predator of the coasts and islands of the inland sea, but the saltwater crocodile appears very ecologically dominant too. Do they compete or are they adapted for different niches?
They do compete. Salties are more aquatic and moduru more terrestrial, so on larger islands, the moduru is more dominant, but on shorelines of small islands, salties tend to dominate. It's also worth noting that sexual dimorphism in moduru is much less. While the largest male salties are larger, the average moduru is bigger, and their females are generally larger and can therefore dominate ideal nest sites.

Great video! I do have a question though, you have stated that the alligators of Kaimere tend to be more docile then those on Earth, so have there been any attempts to domesticate or tame alligators? Alligators are able to be trained to respond when there name is called, recognize when there being fed, and target a specific area when trained and have been documented using sticks as bait to lure in birds during there nesting seasons. So there calm deminer and high intelligence means they could be used as hunting companions for wetland/aquatic prey or for guarding settlements near water due to there low metabolism.
Great question! I gave it a fair bit of thought but had to cut the segment for time constraints. The closest thing to a domesticated alligator is the Seridic cattle caiman. They are easy to tame and train, and need a lot less space and food than mammal livestock of the same size, but the biggest hurdle is growth. 10 or so years before adulthood. It's much more efficient for the Seridic villagers to round up a few dozen caiman every year than raise them in captivity, so there's no real incentive for domestication. There are caiman and alligator farms on larger scales, but it's not as efficient as mammals for the sake of expediency. Most farmers would rather invest in more resources to get adult livestock in 2-3 years. As for hunting companions or guardians, the slow metabolism is pretty preventative of travel with a hunter, and the type of crocodiles aggressive enough to deter attack aren't ones you want near your settlement anyway. It's certainly happened, and witches with crocodilian familiars have a great companion with minimal upkeep needs, but they've not been domesticated.

They would happily ignore humans, and are generally docile, but will defend themselves if pressed.

Yes but they’re not present in the known world. Endemic to the ocean within Kairul. There are so many more pseudosuchians than I covered in this episode. This is just those in the known world.

Based on information of black caimans that I’ve gathered, I find it interesting that Kaimeran black caiman which seem to be more robust and aggressive than Earth black caiman in that it can more readily combat crocodiles while Earth black caiman would lose to a jaguar 3 times smaller than itself (ua-cam.com/video/l_MnRDPtMKs/v-deo.htmlsi=jEA93V8lv4cWww-s). Though speaking of which, how big are Arvelith crocodiles that Kaimeran black caiman encounter?
That is false jaguars go after spectacle and young black caimans,not adults.
On Earth as I understand it, jaguar predation is generally restricted to crocodiles that weigh less than themselves with only targeting larger individuals if the caiman is somehow compromised. Seems that while jaguar and anaconda are a threat to young black caiman, once they reach large size, the tides turn. It could certainly happen, but I expect beyond 4 meters, caiman are only in danger if they're trapped or something.

Nah that's just a reflection of the vast taxonomic disagreement between Assembly naturalists. Some say Kaimeran salties are a subspecies of C. porosus, while others think they're a distinct species. The simple reality is the definition of species and subspecies are kinda arbitrary, so it all comes down to which researcher is writing the article and their somewhat subjective opinion on the phylogeny debate. Western salties, Trakaiam salties, Crescent salties, and eastern salties may represent four species, four subspecies of C. prorsus, or some variation of this layout. Western salties are genetically most distinct but may still just be a subspecies. I can't give a concrete answer because there isn't one unfortunately

There’s some sort of blur effect going on that pops on and off every 3 seconds. I love your videos but this is starting to really bug my eyes. Hope there’s a way to fix it.
It's something I've got to figure out. I've made my files smaller because I think it's simply too much data, but maybe I should try compressing it further. The original file also does that in parts so it's not UA-cam's fault. Maybe I just need to let Movavi go and try other software that can better handle the data without so much compression. It's annoying to put so much work into the art and folks only get to see blurred or inconsistent versions.
