I had this on cassette back in the 80"s, I remember when I bought it I put it in the tape player of my moms car. She really seemed to be enjoying the nice melodic acoustic intro, of course she didn't know what was coming next.

Another song that goes overlooked in the grand scheme of Metallica. Such a great song. This was the song that opened their 2nd record, Ride the Lightning. To keep perspective, it is their 2nd record and it is considered one of the best heavy metal records of all-time.
Also, saw this live, and the mosh was painful. Fun, but painful lol
This song was written during the cold war, and it's inspired by anxiety about nuclear war with Russia.

As a child of the 80s I agree- what a weird time to grow up. I remember getting this album when it came out- on cassette tape! But yeah- War Games movie, The Day After miniseries, post apocalyptic movies by the dozens- scary time to grow up but best decade ever!

MetallicA's music, especially their 1st 4 albums. Their thought provoking songs are so relevant in today's landscape. It's really quite amazing.

I haven't read through all of the comments so I apologize if this was already posted, but I remember the Red Hot Chilip Peppers inducting Metallica into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2009, and they commented about how amazing this song was. I seem to recall they were driving on tour in the middle of the night and they heard this song and they couldn't believe their ears.

I saw Metallica for the first time (long over due) 5 years ago. Only time I've had a chance to see them. They played this at the show I was at. When I heard that intro music start, I lost my Sh*t!
Keep in mind that a lot of this early to mid 80s stuff was during the Cold War where we all worried about nuclear warfare.

This song (because of when it was written) is about the anxiety in the air as it were, about The Cold War. Nuclear War erases us all if we are lucky enough, not to suffer radiation aftermath.
I heard something recently: (I'm apolitical)-RFK Jr. said that the drills my parents for example, had to go through in school in case the Russians came, was actually a psychological operation (PsyOp) for the government to get Americans to be somewhat used to the prospect of Nuclear War. Not that anything else. Hiding under desks wouldn't stop anything. The Government is not our benefactor, it's 90%+ bureaucracy. Possibly more.
