Battery is one of Metallica's untouchable classics.
The intro is so beautiful. Holds a special place in my heart, it still brings tears to my eyes (especially, thinking that this was their last album with Mr. Cliff Burton)
The rest of the song is just classic Metallica that just cannot be replaced
This song is about Battery Street in San Francisco. It’s a main road where a lot of the clubs they played back in the day are. It’s where the line “cannot kill the family battery has found in me” comes from. Would’ve just loved to be there in the height of the 80s metal club scene.
True AND battery = their fans, which is where they draw their energy from - pretty sure there is some material out there where James talks about this briefly (unless I made it all up in my head, which is also possible :)) )
@@oakie20 that’s the family that battery found in Metallica. Their fans. The Metallica family James always talks about at shows.
And hence forth we became the Metallica family. We charge them and they charge us at shows.
Basically with battery street, Metallica and the metal fans- battery is here to stay- in other words we aren’t going anywhere. Metal was here to stay and it did and so did Metallica all these years later still going.
Thank you I’ll do you one better ! Kurt , James , Cliff, me , chuck Billy , Scotty Ian , and a few others put our lyrics into the song a little bit me and burton played in trauma together and don’t forget about ruthies inn! And metal mondays ! Great days! Brother we were so poor ! Ian said we had bologna on hand sandwiches cause we couldn’t afford white bread!
I know you don’t normally react to live preformances, but the Seattle 89 clip explains the meaning of this song….they dish the energy and the band takes it and dishes it back, and so forth.
yes please
Facts
Aaaa hate to burst your bubble we wrote that song about where we lived and practiced ! On battery Ave! In el ceredo in San Francisco we grew up on battery Ave ! I played in a band called trauma with Cliff burton and he went to Metallica I played in a band called HELLHAMMER WE partied and grew up on that street! So we all sat down and wrote a little bit and there was couple other guys there like exodus, testament and chuck Billy cliffy , me , James , Kurt, and Scotty Ian from anthrax! After they came out from the east coast brother we were so poor we had to eat bologna on hand sandwiches cause we couldn’t afford white bread! But we made sure we had beer ! And another place we played was ruthies inn right up the street from battery avenue
@@Shmotivated nope ! It’s about the streeet we lived and practiced on ! in el ceredo ! BATTERY AVE!

Battery is my favorite song from the Master Of Puppets album.
The album, released on March 3, 1986.
In 2015, the Master Of Puppets album was added to the Library Of Congress Registry to be preserved due to its cultural significance.🤯
Awesome reaction video Dave.
Great work Dave. The Battery is their fans and Battery st where they played gigs back in the day.
God damn Dave, you did it again!!
Your interpretation/breakdown of the intro (lonely traveler joined by others) is sooo insightful specially considering the band members and how they found each other... I never thought about it like that and I'm sooo glad that you added this extea gem of an insight in my head to the already existing meaning behind the song, and your interpretation/breakdown enriches it quite beautifully in my opinion...
Love the breakdown and the reaction; and as always,
Much Love & Respect🙏🤘
One of the GOAT BANGERS :D
I’ve been listening to Metallica for 25+years, and that was the best interpretation on that song by far! Sure, i was a little high watching your video, but damn, u gave me a hell of a trip with your point of view:) the intro, quick hello of solo, i mean every detail, you naild it! It was almost like hearing it for the first time after all these years. And seeing you enjoying the song, headbangin with a smile, I was like “I know, right!!!”:))))) headbanging with you:)))
Thank you🙏
The intro is so beautiful. Holds a special place in my heart, it still brings tears to my eyes (especially, knowing that this was their last album with the bassist Mr. Cliff Burton)
The rest of the song is just classic Metallica
As others mentioned, it’s officially about battery street. But your interpretation is spot on for me. Metallica has been my battery for a long time. Their music really pushes you. This song specifically to me is like a steam roller combined with a hellcat. Just the pure power and speed is something to behold.
again, Seattle '89 version is just this song on steroids...they played it 20% faster
Love this song
This song is about where we grew up and partied in el ceredo ! BATTERY AVE! San Francisco! Me and Cliff burton played together in a band called trauma and he went to Metallica I went to a band called HELLHAMMER ! And we all partied and played on battery Ave. and ruthies inn! That’s all the song is about the street we practiced and partied on! It’s not geo political or violence oriented! It’s the street we lived on and partied ! GOOD TIMES🤘🏻🤘🏻
Battery street is where they played a lot back in the day. It’s about being a metalhead at a show. We charge Metallica and they charge us. “Cannot kill the family” - so you can’t kill us- we are the Metallica family as that’s what Metallica calls their fans. “Circle of destruction hammer comes crushing “ - aka mosh pit. Pounding out aggression - banging your head. Like their new song lux eterna- it’s pretty much about being at a show.
the title is a play on words with 3 meanings:
battery street sf, where they played in the early days / battery as a power source / battery as a battering ram, smashing through things
Yeah man..
Been waiting for this moment..you do reaction on BATTERY... What a rush...!
to WHAT IT DO DAVE - firstly, thank you for another banger reaction!
secondly, I feel you started off almost like you weren't fully present and was just getting another item checked off your "To Do" list - just my feeling from watching. BUT - you recovered very VERY well pretty quickly :)
lastly, keep up the great work sir!
Im usually tired and exhausted when I’m doing these reactions, as they happen after I get off my 9-5 and after I put my kids to sleep. But music usually gets me going again pretty quickly haha. Sorry about that. I needed more coffee.
@@whatitdodave no apologies needed man! I just thought it may be useful feedback, that's all. I appreciate what you do and how you do it. Your takes are quite insightful!
A Battery is also a group of military artillery. Giant guns. Torrential onslaught. Also think assault and battery…a ferocious pounding! Can’t stop it.
89' Seattle live version! ✨️
"Cannot kill the family, battery Is found in me!.....Battery!"
A never more better example of "the battery" would be their performance in Moscow 1991.
The energy flying during that show is STILL contagious 30+ years later. You've seen "Creeping Death".....you know.
Spot on bro 🔥🔥
Assault and Battery.... although it always made me think of a artillery battery pounding the enemy until they went insane/shell shocked.
My favorite song on this album... In my opinion... It's up there with fight fire with fire 😎
Great reaction. 👍
I love this song now since you reacted to this song you should watch them perform this live!! They go insane they play this song 2x times faster. If you want to react to them performing this live you should watch the San Diego 1992 Battery live. Just a suggestion 👍
Lone traveler joins a group. It does have that feel.
I saw them back in the day. I remember the more we came they just went that much harder
Well said 😊
You should check out the Seattle 1989 live version of Battery. It's absolutely INSANE! You won't be disappointed trust.
Can’t believe you didn’t react to it yet…epic song
I just totally enjoy the hell out of you hearing a Metallica song for the first time
I don’t usually make multiple comments😂😂😂 but 12:41, when they switch to the down beat is just nasty! Perfect Thrash!!!! They could play that for about a hundred more measures!
The whole song is dedicated to the Metallica family when they perform this song live
We’ll actually THATS where we all practiced on battery street in el creredo San Francisco me and Cliff played in trauma together! And we played and partied on battery street
Next Leper Messiah?
You absolutely must see them live! I don’t think there is a more deserving reactor to Metallica on here that could appreciate a show and the music more than you. FYI though- don’t make plans for the day after- you’ll be happily exhausted!
i knew you would get there. battery is about the band giving energy tot the crowd and the. crowd returning the energy. refueling the battery
Its more about the "war machine " can't stop it ...

No fakery / buffoonery
Intro always sounded Spanish to me. Nylon string guitar probably.
I only have 2 albums of Metallica Master of Puppets and The Unforgiving album
Metallica aka The Black Album
Battery= Thrash Metal and The Family = All the fans of that kind of music, style and life.
careful what you wish for XD it aint very safe to have someone next to you while listening to Battery XD might butt heads or something.
Please do metallica one
Already done. But beware. It was my first reaction to Metallica and I paused a lot haha.

Yup
Assault and battery ....get it straight brother 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Metallica music is like opera the way they write of course it's metal but the music fits the subject
