James Hetfield's Darkest Song | Fight Fire With Fire

- James Hetfield's Darkest Song just might be "Fight Fire With Fire." The Metallica frontman was obsessed with death in the early 1980's and developed an interested in the cold war. Fight Fire With Fire is about the ongoing threat of Nuclear Warfare. Our planet could be eradicated if we don't learn to use civil discourse to resolve conflict. The only alternative is violence. This track is total "fire" in my opinion....yet another testament of Metallica's superior songwriting. Get your songwriting chops up with my full music theory course below. You could be the next papa het....penning songs that influence generations muhahaha!

I think harvester if sorrow might be their darkest track. It’s pretty much about a guy killing his family. The performance of that song in 1991 at Moscow is arguably their best
Infanticide!
it's about the death of your childhood......allegory, yo
Seattle 89 dude
I like the mexico city 1993 performance a lot too
Its not about that literally. Its bout abuse and loss of innocence
This is their best live sound in years, they are tight af and knocking on 60 years of age. One of a kind, Tallica baby🤘🏻
Incredible sound
Agreed, James' new guttural vocals that have been forming for the past 5 or so years are really shining here.
you are damn right, saw them last week at Pinkpop, James sounds so good at the moment, Kirk was in the pocket the whole show, hell even Lars was on point and Rob was good as always.
Absolutely. I cheese like a dork watching their live sets over the last year. Definitely hit some kind of stride recently, whatever it is I hope they can keep a grip on it. I mean Lars is killin it lately too. Metallica renaissance? I think so.
It's insane that they can keep it up when they are older, alot of rockbands are still going but the music is babyfood compared to some metal.
I’ll take FFWF over Battery any day of the week. It isn’t even close.
Agreed!
I agree, but got damn. They’re both just so good!
@@HayRad swap intros?
I always thought FFWF was the better track. They're both great, but I always liked this track more.
Battery sounds awkward during the verse
As a hardcore Slayer fan, I'll say this. No one to me in metal delivers that rage, bitterness, brutality, death, and honesty that rips through your soul like James Hetfield. And Fight Fire with Fire to me is one of the heaviest songs ever recorded to this day. It doesn't need to be tuned down or speed up. It captures everything
Of all Metallica songs, Fight Fire With Fire would definitely fit in as a Slayer type song
Or maybe some riffs from blackened
Here’s what shred doesn’t know: Cliff wrote the intro for Fight Fire with Fire on a tuned down acoustic guitar. Just another reason Cliff was such a beast
Was the beginning of Battery also written by Cliff?
This is the song that basically got me into Metallica with trapped under ice and nothing else matters and master of puppets. And i think James hetfields darkest song is mabye frayed ends of sanity. Basically about a man who has schizophrenia and is going completely mad.
+ Harvester of sorrow
Badass song! I love the lead harmony James and Kirk play in this thrashterpiece! 👌🏼🤘🏼
Sonic segs for sure
My favourite part to play!
Impossible to play with complete satisfaction alone with one guitar. What a pleasure to play together with friends to produce such exquisite sound.
@@tak8481 it’s like surf rock on steroids.
@@OriginalKingRichTv I suppose you can make it sound like surf music if you slow it down a lot
This song ranks with damage inc. as being one of the hardest songs Metallica wrote. The guitar harmony absolutely wails.
Dyers eve is probably the hardest from most perspectives.
Except vocals. Getting Metal Militia vocals to actually sound good has to take that title because I think it might be impossible.
@@plasmakitten4261both of y’all wrong this is their hardest thrashiest song
Dyers Eve literally has to be their darkest song. Its where james dug deep into himself about his past and all his darkness from his childhood.
Same as with "The God that Failed" It's about James' mother when she had cancer!
For me, Fade to black is darker
This is quite the evil song but I can’t imagine anything darker than One. It’s absolutely terrifying
This is like one for the whole world 🌎 bro
James clearly stated, "Wealshadai!"
"We all shall die"
dude, these guys are killing it on this world tour. they sound amazing. I couldn't be more proud to be a long time METALLICA fan.
I absolutly Love Hetfield's gruff , gritty bark that he has been using for songs like this over the last couple of years. Its fantastic, it adds so much darkness, heaviness, broodiness to what was already a colossal sized song. This is yet another stunning performance. It sounds like rapid, rabid wolves from hell unleashed from the cages of Hades itself.
I was in this concert, my birthday was in the past day (11.05) and i remeber when i heard the acoustic intro i was crazy, my first concert, best day of my life
I would say Harvester Of Sorrow is pretty dark.
Fight Fire With Fire is definitely on that list of dark Metallica songs along with quite a few others. Creeping Death, Harvester of Sorrow, One, Fade to Black, Ride the Lightning, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Disposable Heroes, Master of Puppets, and Damage Inc. all respectfully have a dark story being told in the lyrics. Now the question that should be asked is, which song has the darkest feeling lyrics ever written?
Lol I like how you called Disposable Heroes “Back to the Front”
@@coconutmango4422 To be fair, that'd still be a sick tittle for this song😂
@@coconutmango4422 Thanks for correcting me on that one song actually. Guess it just proves that my memory is utter shit.
I don’t know about Creeping death, it’s pretty holy
@@adrianpadilla8919 Idk man, Ancient Egypt is dark.
Hi Shred.
I always follow your video from Italy and i absolutely love your reactions!
Hey Bro, you kick ass with these amazing videos that u release.
That live sound of PapaHet, gives me "Cavalera's Sepultura & death metal" vives
Yea maybe but het at least still play guitar cuz max dont play that much on concerts
The rythem guitar behind the solos in the early albums was so gooood.
It was usually 0-000-00-000-0 😆 but still badass
"listen to that!" talks through the ENTIRE solo AND harmony
This song kicks ass awesome video man 🤘
That was the best live performance that's recent, that I've seen in awhile
Been seeing your shorts. Ive been playing for 14 years "metal". Just subscribed
All these years I thought he was saying "it's missle time!"... I could be wrong, but with the theme of the song being nuclear war... it kind of fit.
He says “We all shall die”
I love getting home to work with a vid from the shred man 🤟🏻
In my opinion James hetfield darkest song is Dyers Eve it’s such an underated song with powerfull lyrcis about James going in rage with those about his father and mother
I said it before and say it again, Lars is a great drummer and perfect for metallica.
3:34 I think the lyric is "We all shall die"
They also played this song already in 1983 live keystone
I always thought they used a harpsichord for the intro...but it doesn't make sense
This is probably metallicas best song, top 5 for sure
Next up dave mustanes darkest song...lots of them
They do it’s just buried in the mix but the main part you hear is acoustic
Went to see Metallica two days ago, they are absolute giants and in such good shape.
It's good to see that you try to spread human values through these videos, it really shows people that metal is not just a bunch of screaming dudes. Keep up the good work Shred \m/
Dang those close ups of James' picking! I hope my hands are still that healthy when I get up there in age.
One of my favorites and one of the darkest and heaviest.
I love this tune!! Plus it brings me way back when I was 12. My first Metallica album I got into then was probably Master of Puppets....then a backtracked to Ride The Lightning. Such a solid album. All the way from front to back.
I loved James' younger voice during this song. He's probably about 2 octaves higher in the original. I like the older vocal range/delivery better with this song.
Still to this day... With this live delivery...absolutely beautifully executed. As long as those power hungry that reign in power the fighting fire with fire will never stop.
I am so proud to have been there at this show about 2 months ago, it was the best musical experience of my life and i almost got crazy when they played this song, one of my favourite Metallica songs ever!
I'm the same generation as James & we grew up with hearing on the news everyday about the enviable Nuclear war with Russia that could start any day. No surprise back then that he wrote it.
Blackened, the song which describes how the world looks like once the nuclear war has proceeded, is actually the sequel to Fight Fire With Fire.
Playing the 2 songs in the same row live would actually be pretty cool...
Global mass extinction is barely the tip of the iceberg with Metallica. For some competition:
1. Child abuse/domestic violence
2. Suicidal thoughts
3. Several mental breakdowns
4. Killing (metaphorically) everyone you love
5. Etc.
It's fucking wild that Cliff played this with fingers
Oh shit, just realized Rob does as well XD
"what did he say there" pretty sure it's a quick "we all shall die"
Ever since i saw you hit a harmonic with your tounge i cant stop doing it
Papa Het sounds a little like Max Cavalera in this performance.
@3:34 He says “YOU SHALL DIEEE” Lol 😆
One of the songs that made me a metal riff maker. Hail to the hordes my brother. 🤘
I think Fight fire with fire is their heaviest! Nuclear war would result in the most casualties. Sick channel Bro!
When I hear this riff I think: MOSH PIT…MOSH MOSH PIT…MOSH PIT…MOSH MOSH PIT😝😝😝🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
Triple 6 BPM LOL there is literally a car in my neighborhood with "0666" on it. Always reminds me of the Iron Maiden song of course.
Thing or Ktulu. Lovecraft had some wicked tales and the band lived up to his vibes.
Great opening song for RTL!🔥🔥🔥
I think Metallica's most evil song is Harvester Of Sorrow!
Hearing Kirk nail the first solo made me happy.
"Until It Sleeps"... I don't know what kind of pain inspired them to write that song, but I hope it helped them get through it.
Fight fire with gasoline
"We all shall die!" - James Hetfield
I was just listening to this song last night before bed
You need to see this song live from 85!! At Metal Hammer
Wah check
Pentaconic scale check
Shred very funny check
im not the biggest fight fire fan due to James' vocals on the record. If I had to pick the darkest song id go with Sanitarium. it sends chills down my spine when i listen to the lyrics.

talking, civil discourse is diplomacy. violence, or war, is just diplomacy by other means. however, you are absolutely correct. some people need this advice to talk, empathize, listen etc. much more than others.
I don't know why but for me, FFWF has the weirdest "sounding" time signature. it' so damn straight forward, but the drums at some point in the riff feel like switching from off- to on-beat. I LOVE IT
it would sound better it dave lombardo was playing drums instead of Lars!
3:34
He says "we all shall die"
So this dual guitar melody is absolute classical sounding and yet so powerfull and beautifull....nice job....but Shred, I know it's personal taste and all but I do think the vocal on the album sounds better....I know that Het matured more on Puppets vocalwise and on Justice he is absolute mean and on the Black he actually sings but Ride has still got the punk-vibe on vocals going on and that's why I choose Ride to be their best...I know it's personal taste but okay, it's all in the eye of the beholder. Great vids you post man.
you have too many great videos to watch!
Awaiting review for the songs from Death Magnetic album's
I think fade to black is the darkest. IMHO
We got some good suggestions here, I know am late but bro no one gonna talk about The God that Failed 💀 that one so cold yeah it’s from the black album but heavy asf too, it’s a song about James’ mother that refused medical help because of her Christian beliefs thus resulted to her dying. Even as a Christian myself that one was painful. Definitely cover this one. Top 5 Kirk solo imo as well.
as for the song: back when 'tallica was still raw & innovative! I agree, James sounds better here than the original!
One of my go to favorites from Metallica For Sure.. Great song, dare I say Masterful Hah hah hah 😈
3:33 x 2 (6.66) ,😮 He Said: "We All Shall Die" ( Todos Moriremos)The Language Ancient "Shall" Was the Auxiliary Verb, instead "Will" 😇😎
WOW James vocal performance is f😍cking Awesome ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
WE ALL SHALL DIE
Mate theyre knocking 60 fuck me wow what a performance
This is Metallica's heaviest song ever. Awesome to see them dare to play it . They do it justice-.
I actually liked the vocals better on the track and he also says y’all shall die thanx Shred for your knowledge in the course
Damn good performance.
But check out their performance of this track from Hammer Metal Festival 1985, has a crummy mix for the audio, but the sure power and energy was one of their best with Cliff!
Lol that intro isn’t a 12-string, it’s a harpsichord & piano.
Bout time this song gets some recognition
Heaviest song part 2? The things that should not be 1989 Seattle plz!!
I’d say Harvester of sorrow followed by Blackened is their darkest songs
What did he just say there!! We all shall die.
Hey Shred!
React to some Infant Annihilator, maybe?
Maybe some good ‘ol decap forn-corn? Lol
Its not like Ive studied every song but I think Master of Puppets, Harvester of Sorrow, and All Nightmare Long give off the most evil vibe
You're smoking crack dude... Thing and Ktulu should definitely be on that short list. Maybe the Frayed intro.
There's a problem in this the instance with the tape playing the intro, with the sound not being flattened as it should be since they are playing in E flat
Pfff or something's wrong with my hearing. I need to pick up my acoustic guitar which is tuned to E flat, but I cannot wake the neighbours mouahahaha
Lyric wise fade to black for me
I got an evil forearm pump just watching this!!
Lars is the drummer of all time. Lars is a drummer, so he plays drums, therefore making him a drummer.
Shortest straw makes my neck rattle its a fucking banger
Thematically, this song and Blackened share the same concept. Metallica's darkest song COULD have been Enter Sandman, but Lars and Bob Rock pleaded with James to get rid of the "crib death" lyrics lol.
What you said about being better conversationalists is VERY IMPORTANT! I believe we are missing NUANCE!
It's all LIKE or HATE and no nuance, we are scared to say I DON"T KNOW and maybe....
OK back to Metallica! I love this song! Original in E is heavier ( cause the key is tighter). Like when people play Sweet Child o' Mine in D (instead of Db) Does not have the same mood. Is it just me Shred or does this make sense? Cause C is now B !!!
Wap On good people! 🤟
I was there, such a cool night
He said: WE ALL SHALL DIE!
The darkest factor is that this is the last song Metallica performed with Cliff before he unfortunately passed away.
They still sound great.
“We all shall dieeee”
I think the darkest war is in us individually. The Unforgiven trilogy is my darkest Metallica. Nukes we can't control. Whether we get nuked by others every day of our lives, or nuke ourselves every second, that is the real darkness. Our own.
"We all shall die!"
chuggachuggachuggachugga
Metallica does a medley of Mercyful Fate...
Funny you bring that up (I don't understand exactly why) but anyway, the intro to "Into The Coven" (1983) always gives me vibes reminiscent of the FFWF intro.
2:54 would it be d flat cuz day play in d standard
What about fight water with water
one of my fave Metallica track
