this solo was improvised by Kirk in like 30 mins or som it was intended to have a creepy or scary vibe to it
The guitars sound on this album hits different
Recently I asked ChatGPT which rock or metal albums used a combination of transistor- and tube-amplifiers and it listed this album among five others.
For me those opening notes always gave me a foreboding feel, similar to the Jaws theme.
It’s supposed to…about a giant sea monster emerging from the Sea, Cthulhu
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 Obviously. Been a fan of the song since I heard Puppets in 90ish. Got into Metallica with Garage Days Re-Revisited. Just adding to the conversation of how the beginning of the song sounds to me. Always knew what it was about.
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 Like the mythos it's self, Cthulhu is at best a minor character with a passing reference. Dagon is referenced much more heavily, and Nylarthotep is referenced by one of its primary epithets. The song was mostly written about the Shadow over Innsmouth, making the central focus Dagon and the cult of Stary Wisdom, though the tital its self is from At the Mountans of Madness were it describes shuggoth
This is is about C'thulu indeed Dave, Metallica are huge fans of HP lovecraft.
I just think it’s a bit deeper than that haha. I think they are using Cthulhu as a catalyst for conveying something else.
@@whatitdodave that's why we love your breakdowns, Dave!! You always come with a fresh, intriguing, interesting perspective which I greatly appreciate🙏
@@whatitdodave This is the 2nd of 3 songs about Cthulhu. I love this song, it hits so hard
I very-much enjoy your reactions, Dave: your demeanor, your attitude, your observations, your intelligence…. And you have a cool voice. I particularly enjoy your Metallica/metal stuff. Subscribed
Man the Master Of Puppets album is so good, hearing this song brings me back to the mid 90's when I first got into Metallica as a teen...
This has always been my favorite Metallica song. It's just sooo heavy and I'm a sucker for slow and heavy grooves. The new song If Darkness Had A Son gave me similar vibes...that's probably why it's my favorite of the three new singles from them.
You should DEFINITELY check out the S&M live performance of this AND the Seattle '89 live performance of this song, either offscreen or as a reaction!! (I would recommend the S&M performance, personally)
Plus the way you described the intro was SPOT-ON!!! This song is one of three MetallicA songs (The Call Of Ktulu, The Thing That Should Not Be, Dream No More) centered around H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, and Cthulhu is a hideous, horrific sea monster that's sleeping in the bottom of the ocean/sea and if/when it awakens and rises from the seas, anyone who even looks at it will go insane and turn to stone... (I apologize if I'm wrong, but that's what I remember; it's been a while since I read the stories)
Fantastic breakdown as always, Dave!!👏👌
Much Love & Respect🙏🤘
I'm with you on S&M version, it's special and part that I remember is when Kirk pulls the strings of guitar, I thought they'd break :)
@@dugmetallica1 I also saw backstage footage of them after the show where Kirk shows his right palm and it's bruised all to hell!! I was shook😅
That show to this day is unlike any other I've ever seen, it's so unique and special... it genuinely felt like the band had been performing with the orchestra for decades, their chemistry was unbelievable🤘
also All nightmare long is Lovecraft vibe song
@@lubomirhianik6736 its about the Hounds of Tyndalos which are part of the extended mythos
A few things
1. Cthulhu doesn't automatically turn everyone who sees him "insane", only those who lack the mental strength to comprehend his appearance will go mad
2. they don't turn to stone literally; they would get paralyzed the sheer dread that would come with the insanity to those who lack the mental strength as mentioned above.
3. This song also mentions "the Crawling Chaos" Nyarlathotep, the "hybrid children" of the Deep Ones from _Shadow Over Innsmouth_ , as well as the "'Father' roaming free" is referencing Dagon and the Deep Ones worship of him as Father Dagon
You mentioned Cthulhu, well, Metallica's song 'The call of Ktulu' is about Cthulhu! They altered the name of him as you are not meant to mention his name!!! This song is bout him, 'Dream no more' is also about him too! The solo on this song is like the creature screaming! The bassline in Ktulu is also the creature!!
This song is also about Cthulhu, as the beast has been referred to as both "The thing that should not be" and "great old one". Plus this song being about an Incomprehensible horror rising from the ocean and driving people mad... Chtulhu's whole shtick.
Hammett said he wrote this solo to sound like what he imagines it sounds like getting sucked underwater by dozens of tentacles.
And he wrote it in 45 minutes because they still didn't have a solo for it and he almost missed his flight back to America from Denmark because of it
There’s probably a flanger on the lead guitar. The cleans on this able all seem to have a chorus effect on them. They were using Roland Jazz Chorus amps around this time, so it makes sense.
I know you don't do live show reactions but you have to do this from Seattle 89,you will see James and Metallica in their prime
Live Seattle 1989 version of this is a MUST......
I love your insights, Dave. Most of us just hear a bitchin song about ctulu, then here you come adding another layer, a new way to think about it. 🤘
Unsure if mentioned yet.....give this one a look from the Seattle '89 show. Peak Metallica, right there.
Great breakdown, man!
cliff gives the song soul. don't forget that bass!
You have to look up the live Seattle 89 version. Even if it’s on your own. It’s sooooo much better than studio
no way this guy just guessed the song was about Cthutlu after one verse thats crazy
Ngl I'm kinda high watching this bro and your comment about "knowing what you're gonna change into before it happens" is some trippy shit hahaha, love your insights man, I would seriously recommend this song live in Seattle '89, it sounds absolutely monstrous (pardon the pun) 😉
Thank you for all your hard work 😊 this is a forgotten little gem that compliments a couple of other songs 😉 have fun and take care 😎
Yes Dave!!! Next do the album opener! BATTERY!!
I really love this song, and It's S&M varient
I remember when I first got my teenage grubbies on this album. My neighbors and I listened to it on repeat. My parents informed me that they didn't like the music as much as I did.
Man I swear if you see the live at Seattle 89 James seems on the brink of insanity
Your reactions rule keep them coming 👍
You should become a radio moderator, Dave, such a nice calming voice.
Thanks for reacting to my donation!
Their first Downtuned song. The guitars there are in D standard. Their 2nd song about Cthulhu
Pretty solid song.
Actually believe it or not they actually play this song in E standard. They use the power cords to make it sound heavier and to make it sound like it’s in D tuning. Trust me I play guitar and this song is definitely in E standard and not D. If you play guitar then you know
@@shaneculliton9975 You should check your ears.
@@klmrk9961 and you should watch the youtuber Andriy Vaslenko. He even claims that it’s not actually drop d even though it may sound like it
@@klmrk9961 if you were a guitar player you would know. But clearly it doesn’t seem like you play guitar so. Trust me I know what I’m talking about
@@shaneculliton9975 I play guitar. Playing along with my guitar tuned to E doesn't sound right. It's not drop D, it's D standard. If you play guitar, you should know the differance.
Love your vids, bro.
It's probably not worth reacting to on screen, but if you have time off screen you should really listen to the version of this from the S&M album that Metallica did with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. It think it's better in general, but I really think that you specifically would love that version.
You said you don't do live versions but for this song the Seattle '89 version is 10×better
The best Metallica reaction channel! Dave is the go to!
This album is peak Metallica. Nothing even comes close.
Lovecraftian horror is some of my very favorite horror…thanks Kirk Hammett 😂😂
About Lovecraft's Cthulhu yes, but I always think... "release the Kraken!".
I see reflections of HP Lovecraft in the lyrics. Could just be a song about his writings.
This song is directly about Cthulhu.
Hey Dave, will you be doing the entire Master of Puppets album?
Bro you ever do any voice over work? If not you definitely should try….got a sick deep voice
Went zero to stink face real quick!!
🤘🏻🤘🏻
U got it right w the ktulu guess
Cthuluu loves you! With a side of fries!
Read The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and of course Call of Cthulu.
One of Kirks best solo's! 🔥🔥🔥
WHAT IT DO DAVE I can't afford to donate and have no way to electronically do so if I did
But PLZ, react to Mad As a Hatter and Every Bird That Flies by Larkin Poe. Hatter is the prettiest song I've ever heard. Get The Covenant House version. She wails like an angel, literally. You like blues and slide guitar? Game on
Best band in the world
Like drive an Abarth Punto Evo ín my mind-minefield.
Geoff released his new video on UA-cam today. Sound of Silence.
Oh my god.
@@whatitdodave
He just got it back from the audio mixer this morning. That's why he didn't announce it.
Another Metallica suggestion is the unforgiven 1, 2, and 3
I’ve already done all three. You can find all my Metallica reactions here.

@@whatitdodave thanks man I didn't know you had already watched them
It's not a chorus with a tremolo I think it is a flanger or phaser
C sharp
This song was before it's time...almost biblical
Check out in Metallica with the orchestra
The guitar in the end sounds a bit as if it would be laughing to me
why does your metallica videos have so little views? i dont get it..
I don’t get it either. Do me a favor and share the video or like it if you can?
@@whatitdodave no problem, i always do that. you are great, love your videos
To me the intro is like the beginning of a disaster.
Lol. Not LIKE Cthulhu. Very much about Cthulhu.
Watch live version of this, seattle 89 please
