Super Hornet is better than regular. First, you can achieve higher DPS and also the second seat should be possible to use for bounties in the future (like a prison).
It’s just the best ship for me. At first I was scared that it wouldn’t be so weak but besides the shield it’s the best thank for reviewing it it helps a lot
I'd like to offer another point. The super hornet has some weaknesses on paper. But I'm far more comfortable flying it than its nearest competitor, the saber. Despite the greater number of components and larger firepower, i have an easier time delivering that firepower in the hornet, I feel like I'm guiding the ship, rather than wrestling it onto target. I think its better for -me- and I think my saber will end up getting shelved when I earn the aUEC for the superhornet.
I prefer modifying a F7-C to the SH loadout. You can buy the ball turret and place it on the F7-C and have 3 size 3 gimbals on the nose and wings. This gives you a Hornet with 5 gimballed size 2 guns (Scorpions are my favourite). The chin turret is too gimmicky IMO. The F7-C also has more missiles than the F7-M. edit: I've hardly ever used the co-pilot seat.
The Super Hornet has always been my go-to fighter. It's had its problems & shortcomings throughout the years, but I've remained loyal. The shields, especially stock, lag behind ships like the Sabre or the Vanguard. However, ship armor will eventually enter the mix, and at that stage the F7C-M will find its niche as a dependable -and healthier - fighter.
Hornet line in general is suffering a bit currently as their hull HP on various sections isn't quite where it used to be relatively. Being a brawler by design, when physicslised damage comes online with the new armour system we can expect the Super Hornet to be the most tanky medium fighter in the game, a role I belive it still statistically holds but doesn't quite feel currently. The Super Hornet specifically holds an interesting position in that long term it is expected that a Hornet can be upgraded to the same spec or better than a stock Super Hornet, but also that doing so ought to be fairly difficult and time consuming in the future arround the time of live release. This gives SH owners something to look forward too as Anvil have promised 'As close to mil-spec as legally possible' stock but simultaneously leaves it in an awkward position where a large portion of it's value is dictated by how effective the RIO/co-pilot ends up being and how difficult it is to outfit a stock F-7C to F-7CM levels vs the price difference between the two, as apart from those factors their theoretical capabilities should match.
A good summary - I really hope you're right about the physicalised damage. Time will tell. Kudos for the RIO comment - that's exactly what I thought of for the back seat! I even pondered having some DCS F-14 RIO footage to compare!
If I didn't have an F7A upgrade, I probably would have melted my Super Hornet by now. It sits mostly unused in my hangar. When I originally pledged for it, it was touted as being the toughest kid on the block, but now I have other ships that I enjoy flying into combat so much more than the Super Hornet.
Farrister, love ya buddy. And love the calm tempo and informative nature of your vids, sincerely. But if I could ask ya one thing, besides winning a ship give away ( :) ), could you please dwell longer and in slightly more detail on your starting ship looks and features. Popping back from weapons to actually show a gimballed/ fixed/ S2/ S4 etc. weapon mounts and show the whole ship outside etc. etc. Thanks always!
I like your reviews mate nicely put together. You may want to change your convergence to your preferred engagement range. You seemed to be missing a lot with your wing turrets. I suggest between 500-1500. Once the new shields get implemented the shields holes in the hornet series should close, making it much more viable.
Congratulations, this was one of the very few Star Citizen videos that was scraped into "The Pile" and incorporated into the datasets for generative AI made by Apple, Anthropic, and others. Next time you ask a bot about Star Citizen, a little bit of Farrister's wisdom will be in there.
I've gotten my hands on a Heartseeker, after I had a *lot* of fun in the Hornet Ghost. The added armour is noticeable, but so is the comparative lack of missiles. I really think it should at least get an additional Size-1 shield generator, as losing a wing (and thus a weapon) can get really frustrating.
I just wanna know why the hornets turret is slaved to the pilot without a turret gunner but if I fly the scorpions I have to have a turret gunner when the dps is significantly lower without one and still is lower with one
In 3.10 all vessels wich have S1 shields have great trouble in close combat. With S1 shields You could do & survive better if you avoid spinning dogfights and start zooming & booming. This works with Hornets too 👍🏼
Yeah that's a good suggestion, but feels like a shame - especially given that much of the dev comments around updated flight models was to have less 'jousting' and more dogfighting :(
Great vid and I appreciate the non-arrogant tone! Regarding your complaints about only shield size 1 on Hornets. Well, look at the sizes of the ships. All small ships have size 1 components (e.g. Hornet, Sabre, Arrow). All medium-sized ships (e.g. Vanguard, Cutlass, Freelancer) are slower in maneuvering but have size 2 components. That is the trade-off. Price has little to do with it, really.
Ah thank you. I agree, I think my goal in the video was to help people who may be considering the Super Hornet to do so with their eyes open to the fact that although it looks like it could take a punch, and used to be able to, that's not how it currently flies :(
@@Farrister Well, yeah, if you want tankier fighters, then the Heavy fighters are more for you (Vanguard Warden). But you sacrifice the agility. Overall, i would use Sabre over Hornet in its current state.
For solo? Probably the Vanguard Sentinel, purely because it's considerably cheaper than the other Vanguard models, but has mostly the same pilot firepower. If you have a copilot, the Hurricane is an absolute steal at 1.2m
Super Hornet has been largely forgotten. it will someday get a rework and become the combat workhorse it was always meant to be. but right now, it's not. Too many shield holes, and substandard performance has left it far behind the combat meta.
I think it made me the most sad because when I was pulling together some footage, I found some from Arena Commander back in 2016, and it was almost like a different ship :(
What do you think of the Super Hornet?

Yoo what is that nav guide at 3:51? Is it still in the game?
P.S. Love the vids, keep up the good work
I just realized that the pilot receives feedback indicating when rounds land on target. That's cool!
Yeah it's very cool!

I still love the fact that it's a dual seater too - so much fun hopping in with a friend!

As someone who doesn't have the game (yet) I love these reviews because it makes me feel like I can hit the ground running! Loved the video as always!
Ahh thank you :) what are you looking forward to the most?
@@Farrister honestly just flying about and drinking in the landscapes! Area 18 and New Babbage look so beautiful!
@@karatechopkins8361 They are but never forget the old places like Port Olisar and GrimHEX ;)

The turret is actually useful now in 3.10, brilliant review as always!
Still not as good as other choices though.
Wish I had put in more footage from inside!

Excited for whenever we get proper armour mechanics!
dont forget the shield holes lets it down
Yeah sadly that's the big disappointment :(
You forgot the cargo hold that swaps into the ball turret.
Oh yes, the 2 SCU or whatever xD
needs a size 2 shield. I like the Military F7a body style with its scoop that swoops forward, just wish all the variants had that look.
Yeah, I think we will see some interesting visual variations between Hornets eventually.
Is there any chance of a new video for the super hornet? as of the current update? (3.19.1)

@@Farrister yes
how hard in-game is it to earn the required credits to make this purchase?
It depends what you've got to work with. I'd say for a determined player with a decent ship, probably a matter of a few hours.
The Super Hornet is a smaler Constellation ;) they both need some rework
Yeah I think I would agree
