One of the biggest reasons why I think Wolverine is the most popular X-Man is because of his backstory/moral grey outlook. The majority of the X-Men's roster consists of flat protagonists that all fall in line with Xavier's peaceful coexistence mission, but because of Wolverine's background of being in 4 wars and the torture of the Weapon X experience, it grants him a more "realistic" view of humanities flaws. To me, it makes sense why Logan may have been apprehensive to join a group that wants peace with humanity when humanity doesn't want peace with mutants.

Wolverine was already popular even in the 1980s since Marvel started plastering him on various covers
By the end of the 1990s, Wolverine had been paired up with practically every Marvel hero in existence.
Wolverine is also the only character to have appeared in every single MvC game, all the way from X-Men: Children of the Atom to Marvel vs. Capcom 3. He even had two versions of himself in MvC2. We don’t talk about Infinite
When Marvel and DC had a crossover event, out of any other Marvel character it was Wolverine who was paired to DC’s most popular character Batman to make the Amalgam character Dark Claw.
Fox wouldn’t have chosen Wolverine as the protagonist if he weren’t so popular prior

He was in every X-men book, he was popping up in every other title constantly (which always seemed to boost sales). He exploded in the 90's. I would argue he was by far the most popular of the X-men for that whole decade (before the 1st Fox movie came out in 2000). The movies just took that even further.

Wow, watching this made me realize just how surprisingly similar Deadpool and Wolverine's success stories were, in terms of their progression...
Both of them: were originally made to be one-off side characters, gained interest for subverting typical hero archetypes yet were disliked by many for being hard to relate to, then gained a tragic backstory which went on to shape their character motivations and made them more likeable to readers, went from merciless and needlessly mean to having some sort of core moral code, were done dirty in their first official tv/film adaptation (Deadpool arguably more so, but I digress), and then finally rose to fame via the dedication and perfect casting of their live-action counterparts. Which subsequently had a massive impact on their popularity, both mainstream and in comics, making them both household names.
...no wonder this team-up has been so highly anticipated. Even without taking the in-universe connections into consideration, they're still a match made in comic book heaven! lol

The best part of Wolverine is he’s physically almost indestructible but mentally he’s endured several terrible lifetimes of trauma and that’s something he’ll never shake. It makes him complex and unresolved. The mystery and layers of his origin only add to this depth.

Top 5 most iconic superhero of present day
    Spider-man
    Batman
    Iron Man
    Superman
    Wolverine
Idk why tf people still keep superman in the list despite having mid movies and comics and literally no solo games, definitely not a single iconic actor( I respect those actors but none of them can be called iconic).

When we talk about 'iconic' superheroes, it's important to look at the bigger picture. Deadpool is fantastic-he's had some really fun games, incredible comics, and have the best superhero comedies ever made. But when you think about how many superhero fans would actually name Deadpool as their favorite superhero of all time, I don't think that number is as big compared to other heroes.
On the other hand, Superman’s fanbase always makes me wonder why they still stick with him. Aside from Man of Steel, most Superman movies are worse than even the worst modern superhero films.

I reading X-Men and every page they apear since 1975 and what I notice is the Wolverine we are used to was gradually built. Even his powers were introduced one at a time, with the healing factor being the latest to be mentioned. Until 1985, the protagonist of X-Men is Kitty Pryde or Storm or both.

I guess there is something in Wolverine that makes people like him, even without any media influence.
