  • While driving home from rehearsal one day, Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers was in a melancholy mood. Flashing back to his former drug-induced days, he saw himself strung-out on a dirty mattress beneath an overpass. Surrounded by junkies and gang-bangers, it was a miracle that he was still alive. Suddenly, in the midst of his sorrow, he started singing... And for the rest of the ride, he freestyled a song that not only his soothed his trauma, but inspired a generation cope with theirs as well. UNDER the BRIDGE the classic anthem of the early 90s. So get ready, we’re taking you to the place you love, we’re taking you all the way… with Flea, John Frusciante, Chad Smith and Anthony Kiedis of the Chili Peppers NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of #1 in our hearts where we break down a song that was so great that it should’ve been #1 on the billboard hot 100… but for various reasons be it timing, promotion or indifference, the song missed but years later is bigger a lot of times than the actually song that was #1 that week.
Before checking himself into rehab in 1987, Chili Peppers’ singer Anthony Kiedis was a wreck... struggling with a debilitating heroin addiction, he hadn’t been clean since he was 11. His bandmate, guitarist Hillel Slovak, was also fighting his own battle with heroin as well.
Kiedis and Skye immediately took a liking to each other and they soon moved in together. Anthony’s time with Ione would be a patchwork of emotions. In the beginning he was sober. And in his words, “We had lots of glorious days together. I’d wake up next to her in bed and think, ‘she is such an angel, and I’m so in love with her.’” But Kiedis’ sobriety was short-lived. After a mere fifty days, Kiedis fell back into old habits. A couple of times a week, he’d borrow Ione’s car, buy enough heroin to get high all night, and disappear into the city.
Sometimes he would be gone for days. Ione, would try to convince Anthony to get high at home instead. But inevitably he was drawn back to what he called “the downtown maze of ghetto dope hell.” To facilitate his addiction, Kiedis partnered with a Mexican mafia dealer named Mario. The two would often shoot up in so-called safe zone beneath a freeway bridge. The LAPD never patrolled there. Since site was exclusive to Mexican gang members, Anthony pretended to be Mario’s brother-in-law to gain access.
Hidden beneath that overpass in the middle of the city, Anthony spent countless hours lying on filthy mattresses, shooting up in the company of killers. Those moments became the crux of demoralizing cycle... When he emerged from his strung-out daze, he’d go home, cry and apologize to Ione, get some TLC, and then sneak out for another speed-balling binge. It must have been brutal for Ione. But she took it like Mother Teresa. Instead of cussing Kiedis out, she’d say, “You have to eat. Come and lie down on the couch. You’re not going anywhere.” The she’d cook him a meal and nurse him back to health.

My son was a Red Hot Chilly Peppers fan, and I was disappointed, having raised him on Black Sabath and Blue Oyster Cult. Then I heard Under The Bridge, and thought this kid has killed all of us softly with this song. Everyone on planet earth has lived this song in some way. So they won me over.

Absolutely, this song touched my life in 1992. I'd lived in a cabin in the woods for six months, with no job, card, girlfriend, money, or concern for anything besides painting. When I left the little cabin that I'd been allowed to live in for free, I moved to Ottawa and after being so penniless, I got a big public art commission that paid $50,000.00 which was more money than I'd ever seen. I hired an assistant, a young guy from Toronto, who worked with me on the scaffold in the summer heat, and when I introduced him to my friend Rhoda, he fell in love and his life suddenly turned from innocent and straight edged to druggy and wild. He'd latched onto the song Under the Bridge as an anthem for what he was going through. I witnessed his transformation and loss of innocence and helped guide him through his odyssey and it seemed like that song stood as a promise that he'd be okay in the long run. After that Summer, Rhoda set him free, he went back to Toronto, and we lost touch. I can't hear that song without thinking of him and how Id watched his transformation from the sweet naive guy I knew to a young man who'd been on a thrilling journey, that changed him forever. I do hope he's doing well nowadays. With any cosmic luck, maybe he'll read this comment. That was a magical year, and the Toronto Blue Jays won the world series. It was before the internet. It was before comment threads. We were all worried about the ozone layer .
Thanks for your show and prompting memories. Peace.

    This is an incredible song.
I never wanted to cover this song because of the personal nature of it but I knew it forwards and backwards. I sat in with a friend’s band during a live show and they were going to play it. Once the vocals were supposed to start, the singer couldn’t bring himself to sing it. He knelt down and sobbed through the whole song while the audience sang it. I found out that his brother had died of an overdose and he had played this song many times for him hoping it would help jumpstart his recovery.
This song will always remind me of those friends I lost to addiction and will always help me celebrate those who fought and survived.

    Hey Adam,
Wow, Under the Bridge meaning for me. Well, luckily I never had a drug or addiction problem. My problem was severe depression, in the worst way. 'Under the Bridge' actually helped me through the depression for years. I don't think I ever intentionally played it for that purpose, but would hear it and it would just pick me up, get me back to a much better headspace. I only ever intentionally played it once for a pick me up, and that was after getting to the point that I was about to end it all...hanging on the outside rail of a bridge, I heard a voice say, "don't, there's a reason", and I climbed over the railing, got myself together, walked home stopping at a gas station to get some junk food, and when I got home I put 'Under the Bridge' on because I really needed to hear it. That's the only time I intentionally played the song with purpose. Yeah I played the whole cd many times over, but 'Under the Bridge'...I dunno, it's just got some kind of spirit about it that to me has been healing in nature. I like to sing it when I go out and there's karaoke at the bar, it really does have a strong effect on people.
Oh, and the depression, happy to say, it's a little over 11 years since any major depression.

Red Hot Chili Peppers was a new sound for me, but I liked it. As far as Anthony's addiction problem, that hits close to home for me. My sister's oldest child, my nephew that I helped raise from infancy, got involved with heroin. He got terribly beaten and left for dead in a dark back alley. He recovered after many facial reconstruction surgeries and therapy. But because of the strong addiction he relapsed back into heroin abuse. He died of an overdose. My sister went into deep depression because of that. Every time I hear of an overdose case, I think of my nephew. So this song and band give me mixed emotions. Makes me want to go back to a time when I felt safer. Back when I was a kid I thought people only died when they got too old. Didn't know about the violence and drug problems. Now that I'm older, I know more than I wish I did.

Wow dude, I’m sorry for your loss, I can’t even imagine what your sister, you and your family felt through his whole addiction and then to lose him…
You have a way with words, I mean that in a good way. Your honesty and straightforward words really nailed what I think most people feel at some point in life, especially in their 20’s even 30’s. Even the ones who have it together and seem like they have it all goin on think about these things, and it’s so cool that music connects people in the best and worst of times and connects us to emotions we need to deal with to move forward. For me, the equivalent to what you wrote is Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. My cousin Alex & I grew up like brothers, did everything together until our 20’s and stayed in close touch for the next 20 years. In 2010 he died from a heart attack and the last time we talked, he was learning that song on guitar because his wife and daughter loved it. Music is important man. Sorry for rambling, but your comment resonated with me. Take it easy.

This song came out in March 1992. I was 7 at the time going through as far as I was concerned the most intense pain I had ever felt. My little world was being destroyed and I had no control over which direction or where I was going. And pain would be served daily whether I wanted it or not. This year would be the year that would effect me for the rest of my life and still echoes in my life today.
This song I believe kept me from going into a darker place than I already was. I believe it also was my true introduction to rock music as a real musical genre. I was told before then that it was just screaming and non sense lyrics. The Metal and Rock songs I had listened didn't resonate with me like this song. It was something about this song or maybe even the pain I was experiencing and the lyrics that gave me an understanding that pain, anger, rage, depression, etc. were not just felt by myself but by everyone. And that music like this was the "cure". A kind of therapy.
I believe this song taught me unintentionally that the emotions and feelings that I had at the time, even though I had no words for them in my young mind that what I was feeling could be expressed through any song. It was really just about finding the right song. Finding the right beat. Finding the right note. Finding the right tone.
I would say through this song and many like it through the coming years became my therapy. This journey of pain for me still continues to this day. But, I am forever thankful for the musicians that play and speak the words that help me and the many. Even when they themselves cannot be helped by there own art.

For most of the 50's and 60's when ever a song was heard on a record, it was with as much polish as possible. With the advent of punk and new wave, having polish wasn't as critical for a band to have a following, and as such, you were exposed to bands while they were learning their craft. The RHCP had several albums that were filled with lots of "fun" and energetic songs, but you didn't see them start to break out until Mothers Milk. But that couldn't prepare anyone for the generational album of Blood Sugar Sex Magic. It took lots of heartache to get there, but sometimes its not the fire that shines the brightest, but the Phoenix.

Hell, being a suburban Marylander at the time, I didn't even live in L.A. -- and even though I had no way to relate to the specific subject matter Anthony delved into in crafting its lyrics, still it managed to resonate with me as it spoke to the alienation I felt for different reasons than Anthony's.

Apart from it meaning for those with similar experiences, emotions, trauma, etc...
It was also a great simple song, easy to sing for anyone, and the lyrics flow naturally once you've sung it a few times, if only in your head.

I've been a fan of the Peppers since 1987, thanks to their 'Tough Guys' movie appearance when I saw it on HBO. I was 4 then, 39 now. Been one helluva journey watching one of my favorite bands grow and I'm so happy to see them stay on top of their game. 1991 was a magical year. And September 24th is the greatest day in music as far as I'm concerned. Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and A Tribe Called Quest all had records released that day. And all three of them are classics in my humble opinion.

I remember my dad playing this song while sitting in the backyard when I was young, me and my brother would go and hang out with him while singing 'our parts' and it has been tradition ever since whenever dad is playing the peppers we go and hang out with him. And when I got a little older like around 11 or 12 I heard a whole new meaning to the song now that I was experiencing someone real close to me suffering from heroin, my mom. She was always the stronger one in the house but til the passing of my great grandma she slowly became the weakest, even though i was 11/12 i knew what it was, and whenever 'under the bridge' would come on my eyes would water because I would feel like 'Is my mom feeling this way? Does my mom feel lonely?' She was barely home. And now that i am 16 now i cry thinking of my mother and some of my close friends who are currently dealing with drug addiction. I also would cry because It would take me back to the times when i felt alone and that no one understands me and my pain (I am ok now) that song has multiple meanings to me. Not to mention the Chili's is one of my favorite bands i own all of their albums (except for their first album that is really hard to find).

@theweightofmemes gnr you’re really in touch with your emotions and you’re able to express yourself clearly and put your thoughts in words that everyone understands. That’s an amazing trait for a 16 year old. I was 16 once, and me and most of my friends were just complete goofballs who couldn’t express ourselves like you just did even if you put a gun to our heads. There’s an old saying…”that which does not kill us will only make us stronger”. In other words, there is always something we can learn from pain or tragedy, and learning is knowledge and knowledge is power. In my opinion…what you went through was hard, of course, but you got through it and it made you a stronger person and helped you learn good communication skills. I know it sounds strange that something good can come out of pain, but it eventually happens to all of us and not everyone sees the sliver lining…it’s all in how you look at it. You sound like you’ve got a strong head start on a good life. I hope you do well and most important, I hope that you’re happy. All the best!

BSSM was one of my first CDs (after several years of buying tapes). One of my friends traded it to me in exchange for two Lita Ford tapes. One of the best trades I ever made - still listen to it regularly now 30 years later. Under the Bridge wasn’t my favorite on the album (though I do like it fine) but I’d say it’s also one of those songs that’s above my personal likes and dislikes, especially knowing the history of it and how much it means to other people. I’d never diminish that.

RHCP! Nice! This may be the first full POR featuring the Peppers? Interesting timing knowing Unlimited Love came out earlier this month. Nice work with the back story. I've read Scar Tissue and it's a startling read at points... glad Anthony and this set of RHCPs are still around... especially John Frusciante being alive and back. John has a magic soul and feel that gives the Peppers their finest sounds.

Thanks for an awesome video. This song is indelibly placed in my 10-year-old memory, summer of 1992. My family was driving across the country on a 70-day road trip. We were in Philadelphia and caught a shuttle (really just a Dodge 8 passenger van owned by the campground) into the city. This song came on the radio and the driver turned it up a bit. I had never anything like it in my entire life; I was completely captivated. Up until that point, I had only heard classical and "oldies" music that my folks listened to. It would become the genesis of my own musical journey and I still enjoy the Peppers to this day. Love this song.
