#KateBush #ArtPop #80s
Here we honor the indispensable Kate Bush. The word “genius” gets thrown around rather recklessly, and undeservedly. In my opinion, there are only a few true geniuses in the music world, and to be labeled a genius, you need to be able to do virtually everything- sing, perform, compose, produce, at a high-level- with equal transcendence. If you add tabs, or descriptive words, to define Kate Bush- genius would be one of those words. I believe she’s earned that exalted designation.Kate Bush’s vocal innovation is astonishing. Every song she’s ever recorded has a distinct originality. Not one of her singles, or her album cuts, sounds the same. Even though you recognize Kate’s unmistakable voice, she mixes up her tone, her style, her cadence, and her inflection, with shifting range, resonance & emotion.
#5- From 1981..."Sat In Your Lap”- The lead single from Kate’s album The Dreaming.
It’s a song about existential frustration, and the constant quest for knowledge that was a #11 hit in the UK in 1981
Written and produced by Kate Bush. “Sat in Your Lap" is full of sensory stimulation- starting with the gruffness of Kate’s shrieking vocals in the chorus that makes the listener feel the frustration that Kate wrote about, and then there is the powerful instrumentation directed by Kate’s experimental production:
#4- "The Man with the Child in His Eyes”- A riveting ballad that Kate composed when she was only 13 years old, and recorded it when she was 16- with guidance in the recording studio by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, who co-produced the track with Andrew Powell. David also paid for the studio expenses to record the song, because he wanted to help Kate launch her career as a professional artist. Although she was only a teenager, Gilmour saw something in Kate that he believed was very special.
#3- “Cloudbusting”- the 2nd single released from one of the most complete albums recorded in the 80s- Kate’s 1985 triumph Hounds of Love. “Cloudbusting” shows off yet another dimension of her enchanting flair; Kate Bush as a story-teller.
“Cloudbusting” is a musical yarn about a father & son spending time with a rain making process called “cloud busting” on their family farm called Organon. Kate wrote the song from the son’s perspective, and she gives us a heart-warming vocal performance painting vivid nostalgia, and poignancy, especially the part of the song.
“Cloudbusting” was a mild hit, peaking at #20 in the UK, but was a model of Kate Bush’s fascinating artistic eccentricity.
#2- “Wuthering Heights” (New Vocal version!!!)- The song that launched the career of Kate Bush in 1978 at the ripe old age of 19!! “Wuthering Heights” is a musical interpretation of the classic novel of the same name that Kate wrote one night under the light of a full moon. It was an inspiration that she acted upon just before recording her debut album. Like Emily Bronte’s classic book, “Wuthering Heights” is story about the love affair between the two lead characters Catherine & Heathcliffe.
“Wuthering Heights” ascended all the way to #1 in the UK for young Kate Bush, and when it hit #1, it made Kate Bush the first female solo artist to top the charts in the UK with a self-composed song. “Wuthering Heights” was also a #1 smash in Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia- and broke into the Top 10 throughout Europe.
It’s hard to put Kate’s vocal performance on “Wuthering Heights” into words, because when you listen to her sing this song, it leaves you speechless. Kate more than honors the legacy of Bronte’s novel- creating a soaring, dramatic, rock opera.
#1- "Running Up That Hill” (A Deal With God). For me, this is Kate’s opus. “Running up that Hill" manifests every facet of her genius- as a vocalist, a lyricist, a producer, and a visionary.
The original title was just “A Deal With God” but EMI, Kate’s record label, was afraid of having “God” in the title, so the compromise was to make "A Deal With God” parenthetical. It was the lead single from the epic Hounds of Love album, but Kate had to tussle with the label yet again, because EMI wanted the first single to be “Cloudbusting.” After Kate’s concession on the song title, the label caved to her wishes for the first single.
Your videos are always fantastic!
A lot of people throw around the tired 'compliment' of an artist being the "best female songwriter" or "female genius" etc. but Kate Bush is a GENIUS pure and simple, no qualification needed. I absolutely adore her artistry and am equally mystified and accepting of her lack of recognition in the U.S. because, let's face it, we're a simple-minded lot.
Kate didn't do any promotion or performances in the U.S. market with the exception of SNL in 1978 -- that's how I became a lifelong fan. People just didn't know who she was.
I 100% agree forget female she is one of the truly greats I put her up there at the same level as Bowie
Thank you.
Yes!
I fully agree with this. I get the same irritation when those accolades are attributed to Joni Mitchell. The qualification "female" is utterly redundant. Joni and Kate are just genius song writers whose work can stand alongside that of any man.
Kate has always felt unreal to me. She seems to have qualities that lie outside those of a normal person.
“What were your biggest musical inspirations?"
"The blackbird and the thrush."
Almost scary, more like a mysterious character from a fantasy novel. Maybe she really is Cathy.
December 9th, 1978 Eric Idle was hosting SNL while I was staying at my cousin's house in Portland, Maine. I was so entranced with Kate "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" I SHOOK my cousin awake --YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!! We were forever hooked. A few weeks later my younger cousin Liz gave me Kate's first album for Christmas. I'm a beloved fan of more than 40 years.
As of right now, June 10, 2022, "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" is number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, so that is now her highest posting single in the USA. It is really weird seeing the song rise again after 37 years, on a list with Harry Styles, Lizzo, Bad Bunny, and Justin Bieber.
You are right that young people of today are yearning for something better than the garbage they are served up. When they hear Kate, or Steely Dan, or Joni Mitchell, etc, they get completely overwhelmed. They have no idea what it is possible for music to contain, because they've never heard it
i think she just hit #1.
Kate was always way ahead of her time. A truly unique talent, mind, and heart, that one.
@@ronbirchard5262 It hasn't hit #1 here yet (#4 this week on Billboard), but it has hit #1 in several countries in Europe.
Proof that the 80s are back
My favourite female artist of all time.
Yes, girl. YES
For me , PJ Harvey nips Kate. PJ has been more diverse.
But... What about Nicki Minaj?!?1!?!1!?
@@davidellis5141 I love both so much. Kate Bush has a better voice though.
My favourite artist of all time.
Kate Bush is the living proof that fairies are real.
Ok, thats the perfect answer ever.
So is Erasure.
Finn MacCool yeah, and only pussies criticize another person’s interest in legendary, genius-level musicians. (Meow)
fissunix If I was Kate I would be mightily insulted by that. She is a living, breathing real person with flaws just like the rest of us. Likening her to a mythical being is missing the point entirely
@delius521 shhh! I think I got away with it. 😜
Kate Bush laid down the law in regards to acting with your voice, expression with her dance, a live show with wireless microphone, dancers. You didn't "just" go to her show, as many folks experienced for the first time, you were drawn into her reality of the song she sang, you became part of the songs she sang and that's beyond genius in my opinion.
Now you’re talking,Kate Bush is a true bonefiide genius, brilliant prof.
Kate Bush is my idol! Got turned on to her with Running up that Hill in the eighties and have been listening to all her albums since! I agree that Hounds of Love is the most complete album as a storyteller. I do have specific cuts that I love on each of her albums. Rubber band girl, sensual world, waking the witch, jig of life. She embodies the title of musical artist.
The fact that "Running up that hill" only reached 30 in the U.S. is criminal. This is a great song!
While getting to number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 is nothing to turn your nose up at as still a hit, I think it should of got at least in the top 20 there
However it did get top 10 + 20 in many countries as a single, And same with the hit album-Hounds of Love
For some reason she never achieved the success in the States that she did elsewhere. I think it comes down to lack of touring
@@tmage23 - Yes, she definitely has been very successful across Europe, including Germany, where I grew up; I've been living in New Zealand since 2002, and it's the same as the US that most people know her 'Wuthering Heights' and 'Running Up That Hill'. I wonder why that is?! You suggested lack of touring, but Kate had stopped touring already at a very early stage in her career! Unless of course things are different in the US and touring is crucial for an artist to establish a fan base :-)
@Who's Zoomin Who? - Yes. However, in Kate's particular case, I think I may have found another reason meanwhile; After being on a bit of a KB trip the other day and watching many old interviews with her, I eventually got to *this* one: It wouldn't surprise me if she swore to herself "Never again!" afterwards! Painful to watch! ua-cam.com/video/cEnLloAOBAs/v-deo.html
@@tmage23 100%. Red Shoes did well because she at least made it to the states and did press and at least one in store.
Man, Kate Bush. She is the full package and in my book, she ranges at the same level as or above David Bowie and I am not even a Kate Bush fanboy. Her lyricism, performance and physicality are so beyond everything we will ever witness she, again, surpassed everybody you might ever associate with these adjectives.
The queen of Middle Earth, the white witch, the empress of mystery and beauty.
Her and Stevie Nicks give me ethereal white witch vibes!
@strontiumXnitrate - Wasn't that Tami Stronach in 'The Neverending Story'?! x-))
Being a fan of Kate Bush is different than being a fan of many other artists. Liking her music, at least for me, feels like being in love with her. I'm still enamored with her beauty. She's so unique, so odd and free that she seems otherworldly and her music certainly sounds like nothing else out there. She's true to herself and so wonderfully expressive, smart, kind, pretty, etc. Quite lovely.
Oh yes, probably my biggest celebrity crush ever! :-) I'd known her and her Music since '78, when her debut album was released (I was 8 then), but it was only in '89 that I totally fell in love with her, after discovering the 'Hounds Of Love' and 'The Whole Story' LP's in my sister's collection and borrowing them :-)
The other day I heard someone describe her music as bewitching! I thought this was the perfect word to describe what her music does. I can’t describe the way her music makes me feel. I just know that she makes me extremely emotional. She’s the only singer/artist to make me feel this way. So I totally get what you mean when you talk about being in love with her.
Amazing how EMI gave her time to “grow up” and paid for her to expand culturally before recording! They saw in her a unique artist and blessed the world with Kate’s contributions!
Interesting to compare Kate to Madonna, who is the same age. Madonna is infinitely wealthier, but Kate is infinitely more talented (except, it would seem, at making money!) Despite being the same age, Kate became famous at a younger age than Madonna. Interesting also to compare their respective concepts of female sexuality. Both were kind of raunchy at times and used their sexuality in songs, but Madonna just comes across, as I think Elton John once said, as a "cheap whore", while Kate seems to be many guys secret crush!
@@Heartwing37 Interestingly EMI were really concerned after the album the Dreaming (the one prior or Hounds of Love) was a relative commercial flop. It was VERY experimental and more like something Philip Glass would compose. EMI was immensely relived that the singles off Hounds of love were a huge success. (Listen to the amazing the Sensual World - the track This Woman’s Work is sublime and then the album after “the red shoes” and the track “moments of pleasure” will make you weep as it is so beautiful.
When I was a school kid, you either liked Debbie Harry and got laid, or you liked Kate Bush and went to chess club. I liked Kate Bush.
She deserved to be big stateside.
I liked both, so I got laid occasionally ;)
Perfect answer.
...buy when you ran across someone who also loved Kate...
As a fellow 80's kid, the third choice was that you liked Samantha Fox and then you never got laid. [ a joke that only 80's kids will get lol]
I like them both immensely.
1. Babooshka
2. Running Up That Hill
3. Army Dreamers
4. Hammer Horror
5. The Man With The Child In His Eyes
And congratulations to Kate for finally reaching Number 1 in Australia with Running Up That Hill.
This video proves that the Professor knows. 2 years after this video was produced, Kate Bush is back, getting the love she deserved 30 years ago.
50 words for snow is criminally underrated...
Her own video for This Woman's Work is absolutely beautiful and shows what is creatively possible but rarely achieved in that medium.
Hounds of Love is the most important album since Sgt.Pepper. The crown jewel of the 80s. Kate is the high Priestess of progressive pop.
Agree!!!
1. Moments of pleasure
2. The big sky
3. The dreaming
4. Hounds of love
5. Houdini
Yeah baby thats a list
I admire your taste
my man
oh yeah moments of pleasure represent
#2💎
I don't think I could pick my top 5 Kate Bush songs. They're all so different that it's hard to rank them.
She is absolutely a genius, invented the wire thin head--dress microphone using a wire coat hanger so she could keep her hands free. This was ten years before it was picked up by any manufacturer.
Actually, she wasn't the first, but close.
This man has got great taste in music. Arguably the finest female artist in history
To me, there are 2 female artists who I love beyond all: Kate and Aretha Franklin. Aretha's arrival (finally) in the late 60's and her magnificent voice changed the way women were perceived and overwhelmed us with her power. Kate's arrival in the late 70's/early 80's, while not as popular in the US as Franklin, made the concept of a totally self-contained writing/singing/producing genius possible and her influence is felt in so many artists as the Professor of Rock mentioned. I regret I've never seen either of these wonderful artists live and in-person. However, I treasure their music and Kate's albums constantly astound me no matter how many times I listen to them.
@@ronbo11 Have you every listened to Jane Sibbery? Especially her 80's and 90's music?
I think she is. Plus her talent is mindblowing. Her voice, her songwriting, her dancing, her production, her originality, her magnetism.
Arguably one of the finest artists in history period.
inarguably, finest artist in history. the end.
I've been into Kate Bush from her first album. I've never looked back. The Dreaming and Hounds of Love were absolute masterpieces. She is truly a genius. There has never been anyone who comes close to her brilliance. And it is sad that she never caught in America. It's our loss.
KATE is the bomb - nothing like her - or ever will be her - nothing today can compare to this absolute icon of our times
Ethereal, surreal, dramatic, carmic, sensual, emotional, Kate is a magical entity of music. Whenever I feel uninspired, I revisit her arts.
Indeed. ALL of that.
So happy you gave Kate the recognition. I've been an American fan since the 70ties. She truly is an absolute genius.
My 5, this list has remained unchanged for 35 years
1. Running up That Hill
2. The Man With the Child in His Eyes
3. Night of the Swallow
4.Jig of Life
5. Don't Push Your Foot on the Heartbrake
Honorable mentions to Cloudbusting, Wuthering Heights, Waking the Witch and Get out of My House.
Without a doubt my favorite artist when I was a teen - and still today in my 50s. She's never made a song I turn my nose up at.
And my soft favourite Under the Ivy
my favourite one is Jig of Life and I'm glad you included it, I h+think that song deserves way more ceognition :)
Ah yes! Night of the swallow! One of my absolute KT favorites for sure! And as somebody also mention - Under the Ivy! Hammer horror, one of the most British sounding tunes i know, is also a favorite (of the lesser known songs).
oh man night of the swallow doesnt get nearly as much recognition - hearing that song for the first time is an insane experience
Agree with your list. My personal favorite not on yours would be The Weddinf List. They just don't write murder ballads like they used to.
Kate Bush: forever queen. We STAN.
Hell yes! She's a total goddess.
Yep, she is absolutely divine. Can't get cloudbusting off my player at the moment, running up that hill gives me chills every time, wuthering heights, babooshka....more to explore. It's like she has tapped into some sort of feminine spiritual realm; makes you go weak at the knees, her eyes delve into your soul.
I have been a Kate fan since the 80s.
The middle eight of Wuthering Heights is a little piece of melancholy heaven.
i think her lionheart album is sooo underappreciated
full house is one of the best songs ever made
I was in a hard rock band in the 80’s...we played Zeppelin,The Cult, U2, etc...
As soon as l heard Running up that Hill, I was mesmerized..the lyrics, the drumming, the musical accents....needless to say my fellow band mates thought I was crazy...I didn’t care.. I still love her to this day....!
Kate is absolutely unique. I was 13 years old when I was drawn into her magical world in 1978 and I still go back there every time I hear her voice.
Kate Bush was the existential embodiment of creativity of perfection. I bought all of her albums and wore out many stereo phonograph needles from playing those absolutely delicious vocals. If you want to witness the brilliance of this amazing artist, you owe it to yourself to watch "Kate Bush Live at The Hammersmith Odeon". It will give a silky and soothing hug to your soul. I went overboard trying to be eloquent as I could but she deserves special accolades.
Her single "Hounds of Love" is haunting in the best of ways: a song about the fear of falling in love and losing oneself in it. And in the end the coming to terms with the vulnerability inherent to it.
Great comment. That's quite something. I often thought about love like that when I was young. It's all theoretical to me.
So many great songs but the first of the first album, ’Moving’ just captivates me forever.
Other honorable mentions:
Babooshka
Get out of my House
Running up that Hill
The Sensual World
How to be Invisible
My Kate Bush 5'er:
1 - Cloudbusting
2 - The Dreaming
3 - Babooshka
4 - How to Be Invisible
5 - Suspended In Gaffa
The man with a child in his eyes is a perfect introduction to the song The kick inside. The song Wuthering Heights was my gateway drug into the world of Kate Bush. Running up that hill opened the floodgates to buy her past works. I bought Running up that hill on a 45 (remember those). My take away was the hidden gem (B-side) Under the Ivy. As a shy, nerdy and at times bullied teen Kate was the rock goddess that appealed to me and Under the Ivy was my song that I didn't share with anyone.
"which is sad, should have been a #1"
sometimes your wishes come true, kinda prophetic professor
I discovered her during the lockdown of 2020. UA-cam recommended Wuthering Heights to me (Red Dress video) for some reason. I clicked on it and it was instant love. I went down the rabbit hole that evening (and weeks, months after) and never felt such joy and sadness before. She is truly remarkable.
Easily my fav artist of all time, so I guess I have UA-cam to thank for that! I love how she has been making a resurgence lately because of Stranger Things.
You really sum up her artistry like no other, thank you for this video!
All hail the mighty KATE!!!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖
I had *The Hounds of Love* on cassette, back inna day...
I worked as a systems administrator on a 4 to midnight shift for a Wall Street trading firm. When the day shift folks had gone home, I would blast *"Runnin' Up That Hill",* *"Hounds of Love"* and *"Big Sky"* in heavy rotation, and would have to get up out of my chair and mosh myself into a frenzy to *Big Sky!*
I. Love. This. Woman.
It's really awesome how well this particular video has aged. It's 2022 and Kate Bush is finally getting her proper recognition.
Currently (June 13, 2022) Running up that Hill is at #4 on Billboards Hot 100, #1 on Spotify world list, #2 in UK, #1 in Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand and is charting on top 10 in almost all major countries in the world.
Today is July 24th 2021.
I've heard of Kate Bush before.
Today I discovered Kate Bush. Or did I?
Running up that hill sounded really familiar.
But I heard wuthering heights for the first time. I was intrigued. So I went down the rabbit hole. WOW!
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN! And her unique voice. Instant fan 43 years too late.
Never too Late to find Kate. It is a wonderland. What’s your favourite at this point?
finally, the youngsters are discovering this amazing artist
I bought her first album when she appeared on top of the pops (Uk chart show) in 1978 she was almost unheard of. I have loved her ever since. She was the first singer to use a head mic, her sound engineer rigged up a mic using a metal coat hanger to give her the freedom she needed to perform her dance sequences.
-Running up that Hill- quite possibly the greatest contemporary song of all time.
Kate Bush is a genius. I remember listening to "Sat In Your Lap" for the first time and being moved by the opening drums. When I got the album, I remember how I listened with anticipation as I was going on a musical journey to some unknown place, hoping I would survive the trip. When it was over, I was changed forever. Everyone should know who Kate Bush is and how important she is to music.
February 2024! Kate - Forever! Thanks!💙💙💙💙💙🦩✨
Experiment 4 is truly a masterpiece of her creativity
Awesome to see "Night of the Swallow" getting love in the comments
The entire album of Hounds of Love deserved to be #1. Even though both sides of the record are different stories i think the flow so well and listening to it in order creates such a unique experience that has never been captured again
Kudos to "Professor of Rock", that this excellent piece was created before
- "Running Up That Hill" appeared in Netflix Series "Stranger Things" (Season IV), in May/June 2022. (made the song a hit even in the US)
- Kate Bush was announced to be inducted into the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame", class 2023, on May 3rd, 2023. (Induction on Nov 3rd, 2023 in Brooklyn, NYC)
- "This Woman's Work" was used with the credits in Netflix movie "The Mother" in May 2023. (produced curiosity and interest on Shazam etc.)
- Almost forgot to mention: "This Woman's Work" also appeared in movie "A Man Called Otto" with Tom Hanks (Dec 2022)!
Hammer Horror is also a fantastic song from Kate. She does deserve to more popular. True music fans know her music. Her albums are hidden gems to play at a party.
Kate Bush is brilliant! Truly unique. A one off. And a fearless performer.
My Kate Bush 5'er:
1. King of the Mountain
2. Eat the Music
3. Joanni
4. A Coral Room
5. This Women's Work
Eat the music is a terrible song by her standards. Just saying
@@petergreen2552 We finally found the one person who loves Eat the Music!
I like eat the music lol it’s not her beat but it’s still a great song
I love Eat the Music! The lyrics are really sweet, and the tune is infectious!
My favourite female artist of all time, hands down! She is so unique and so complete.
Half witch, half Fairy, 100% Genius!
The one artist who makes me well up with emotion whenever I hear or even think of her. She is a running stream of pure emotion ……
One of her songs that is personally important to me and always makes me cry is Love and Anger. So good.
She is indeed a legend. "Babooshka" is quite the delight for the ears and eyes. "This Woman's Work" almost always makes me cry(Maxwell covered it as well). "Running Up That Hill" is a masterpiece.
This Woman's Work "almost" makes you cry?! I swear, every time I hear the beginning of the second chorus, with her vocals and the gentle choir behind her, ALWAYS makes me cry.
@@michaelalmond-kraft488 I'm a blubbering mess by the time what I call the "regret" section hits (basically half way through the second chorus)
Also “Moments of Pleasure” from the album “the Red Shoes”
Yes, Maxwell covered it. I'm not sure why.
Kate singing it is a masterpiece. Maxwell singing it is bad karaoke.
I discovered Kate Bush in 1978 when I was doing a paper on the Bronte Sisters and specifically, Wuthering Heights. It was after spending a hot day in my classroom (no central air) and I went to the mall for some retail therapy. I spotted her album in the record store and the moment I laid my eye on the song "Wuthering Heights", I knew that I had to include it in my research and mention it in my paper. I went home and I swear I listened to that album at least four times before bedtime and then one more time in the middle of the night wearing my headphones. I don't have to tell you that my paper got A+ and that my teacher was amazed at how Kate's song captured the novel and the emotions of Catherine and her love for Heathcliff. I became a fan of Kate's and anxiously awaited each new album as this was before the internet so you really had to watch the UK music magazines for mention of each release. I managed to turn on at least ten male friends to Kate's music and they became fans as well. She's the only woman I could say that I wouldn't mind sleeping with given the chance lol! One of my favourite songs of hers is "Experiment IV", which is apparently based in fact - using sounds to "kill" ones enemy during war/conflict. If you watch the video carefully, you'll recognize a couple of rather famous actors; Dawn French of "The Vicar of Dibley" and some guy called Hugh Laurie who wouldn't become famous in America until he starred in the hospital drama "House".
Kate snapped up my attention when I was 17 in 1985 when I was working at a McDonald's and heard "Running Up That Hill" on the overhead speaker. Since then I was instantly a fan. My 5'er (is impossible to list so I'll cheat a bit here and make them in no specific order):
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
James and the Cold Gun (1978)
Eat The Music (1993)
Deeper Understanding (1989)
Symphony In Blue (1978)
THE BEST I CAN DO FOR A TOP 5:
1. Wuthering Heights (1978)
2. Babooshka (1980)
3. Running Up That Hill (1985)
4. Cloudbusting (1985)
5. Love And Anger (1989)
Thanks for giving Kate her much deserved accolades. Here in America, you say Kate Bush and most just say, "Don't Give Up" or "Running Up That Hill".
Thank you for sharing your Kate memories! 'Love And Anger' would be my favourite song on her 'Sensual World' album :-) I don't think I'd be able to create an actual Top5 list myself! :-)
After watching Wuthering Heights with Lawrence Olivier/Merle Oberon I came across Kate Bush's song. Interesting that she sang the song from Catherine's ghost point of view. Starting collecting her records so glad that she is finally getting the recognition in this country. Enjoyed your videos/stories/behind the scenes. Thanks
I fell in love with Kate's music during the lockdown. It's what got me through. She's currently seeing a big resurgence in popularity and I couldn't be happier for her.
Wuthering heights is one of the most incredible unique songs I've ever heard. It's like strawberry fields. Impossible to duplicate.
She was , and still is adorable.
💖
Thanks to my amazing dad, he introduced me to Kate Bush as a young kid. Thank you for recognizing her brilliance! 👏 ❤
Makes my heart so happy that she is recognized for the genius she is. She takes me places my imagination didn't know it wanted. Thank you.
My Top 5
1."Wuthering Heights"(1978 Version)
2."Running Up That Hill"
3. "Cloudbursting"
4."The Man With The Child In His Eyes"
5. "This Woman's Work"
Honorable Mentions
"Army Dreamers"
"Hounds Of Love"
people don't know Kate was the one who created the microphone headset with a wire hanger so she can easily do her dance moves. Lot of dances artists should thank Kate for that creation.
Compleatly agree
That scene in She's having a baby with This woman's work is amazing, I never had a baby and I still get emotional. The Dreaming is one of the most brilliant and original albums ever recorded.
Kate did one tour. Near the end, an accident back stage killed a lighting rig engineer and it shook her so much that she never toured again. Her residency at the Hammersmith Apollo a few years back was at the urging of her son.
As for songs, difficult to pick but I am another fan of Hounds of Love it it would be my no#1, In fact in an embarrassment of riches that is her album discography, The album Hounds of Love still stands out.
She toured one other time in 2014 after 35 years
Thank you for the tribute! You only covered her albums until 1989. Also after that the genius artistry continued. The red shoes (with the mesmerizing Moments of pleasure) from 1993 and especially Aerial 2005 are unique and so beautiful. Kate is a true one of a kind. As a devout fan I still have hopes that she will release yet another masterpiece sometime this decade.
Just saw this rock prof for first time re: Kate Bush. He doesn’t mention that “Cloudbusting” is about actual person (Wilhelm Reich), from son Peter Reich’s memory/perspective- rock prof just calls it a tale. He says that “Running up that Hill” is merely about male/female relationships/experiences but nothing about how a woman would be running up that hill/running up that building/with no problem. He ignores her
commentary on sexism in music industry, world in general. Kate Bush is a master.
Hear hear! A total genius! Brilliant singer, writer, composer, dancer, arranger, producer and vocalist! Every song is a piece of art, her musicality and knowledge of instruments and eagerness to experiment sets her so far apart from today's bland drivel of Jessie J and Ed Sheeran and Billie Eilish and Mylie Cyrus.
1. Running Up That Hill
2. Wuthering Heights
3. This Woman’s Work
4. Hounds of Love
5. Babooshka
Someone could take 5 randomly selected Kate Bush songs and put them in random order and i would at least somewhat agree with it!
I think I'd replace This Woman's Work with Cloudbusting
Sat In Your Lap.
Edited. I had no idea he was was going to have this song in his top 5. Fair play.
All I can say is “thank you” for bringing Kate into the 2020’s. I’ve loved Kate for many, many years, there will never be another like her.
Im Late to the game here…YES, been loving Kate since mid80s. Her music brought a lovely complexity into my music selections that forever changed how I viewed great music. I will treasure her music until I am no more.🤙
My earliest musical memory, when I was only 5 years old (1980), sitting in the back of the car while driving home to our farm homestead and hearing Babooshka on the radio. I remember being enthralled by the unique sounds. I have remained an avid fan to this day.
Kate has been my absolute go to since I was in my 20's, and that was a long time ago. I would obnoxiously push her onto everyone I knew. Some got it, most did not. My entire life was spent waiting for the next Kate album to come out and I remember how terrible it felt when Aerial was released and I suddenly realized it had been 25 years since she'd released an album, but not for one moment of that time did she ever fall out of my play lists. I always had something by her going and never was bored or tired of it. Still am not. I've listened to The Kick Inside easily over 1000 times and I can still sit and enjoy ever note on the album. It's timeless. It's genius. It's probably the most important work in pop music ever created. Kate is alone in her unique contribution to pop music. Long live the goddess.
I’ve heard a lot of her music. Here in Canada, we gave her thee recognition she deserved. I have older sisters who played her albums every night after dinner. She is an amazing artist
That's awesome.
Professor of Rock I’m sure you know that she made an impact where needed,as pat beneath covered wuthering heights on her crimes of passion album
Kate Bush is a pioneer. ‘Running up that hill’ is a timeless classic
They always say there is a fine line between madness and genius. Kate is so sweet and a lovely human but I always like to think of her as eccentric and her music as bombastic by nature. Some of her videos have a real sense of humour (The Wedding List is just hilarious to me as she acts out a mad women commiting murder) which makes her all the more appealing to audiences. She is such a character who carved her own unique, slightly off the wall route from the very beginning. She is indeed a genius.
Finally got to see her play live a few years ago in London - the memories of that night will last forever!
I've been a Kate Bush fan since the early 80s.
You can't talk about her musical genius without talking about The Ninth Wave on Hounds of Love. I always loved her storytelling but that entire sequence changed everything for me.
I like your picks but I think some other top ones for me are:
The Sensual World
50 Words for Snow
Army Dreamers
Experiment IV
Eat the Music
So many more... I love her storytelling, the way she uses her voice, the musical risks she takes to tell the story and the way she uses instrumentation to tell the story as well, it's just her voice and lyrics, the layers you can unravel even after multiple listens. Musically, she's probably in my top 5 for most influential for me personally.
Moving is nr 1, Moments of pleasure nr 2, wuthering heights nr 3, the man with the child nr 4 and cloudbusting nr 5
I've been a Kate Bush fan since the mid '80s. An incredible artist.
I just started listening to Kate Bush less than 5 years ago. She was Like nothing I could imagine. She literally changed me and I have never felt quite like her music made me feel, her words, who she was. I cannot believe such an angel exists. I'm beyond taken with songs written b4 my birth.
She's amazing and she's given me more than she will ever know.
Kate Bush was a True Genius of her time ! Another Great Job PROFESSOR 🕵️♂️
INDEED. The queen.
Two words, and I melt... She truly is a genius. America would appreciate a little catching up.
A new generation will now experience her genius thanks to Stranger Things season 4.
I discovered her in 1982, and I am still bewildered by this genius. I find it interesting that so many male musicians, like myself are so devoted to her work, I wonder if someone took a census of her fanbase, what kind of demographic we would find. The kind of loyalty that stayed with her all these years, we must be a strange lot!!
Kate Bush led the way to so many other great female songstresses, including my personal favorite: Tori Amos. Thanks for this sincere tribute.
I remember seeing Tori in the early 90's and thinking it was the closest I would ever come to seeing the incomparable Kate Bush live. That's a huge compliment to both.
She's amazing.
1. Wuthering Heights.
2. This Woman's Work. 3. Love and Anger.
4. Running Up That Hill.
5. Cloudbusting.
Running Up That Hill official music video on youtube has been getting about 1 million views a day these days. Amazing.
I adore this amazing woman too. Her music really inspires. Bjork, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple took inspiration from her. Even pop-oriented stars like Annie Lennox, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper praised Kate Bush.
My favorite songs are Cloudbusting, Experiment IV, The Dreaming, Sat In Your Lap, Lyra, Army Dreamers, Them Heavy People and There Goes a Tenner
I love There Goes A Tenner! I don't why people dislike it so much. It's really catchy!
Yay, Them Heavy People!
@@stevienicksisafreakinglege4413 Not so much disliked but ignored? Neglected or even unknown
I've been following Kate since I saw her on SNL in 1978. I hungrily waited every album after "The Kick Inside" and watched and heard her creativity grow as she did. It was hard living in the US to find out anything and with no UA-cam, it was almost impossible to find videos. Always my favorite!
I was lucky to discover Kate when I was 19 (as was she, we were born a month apart). The first time I heard Wuthering Heights I was blown away. There was nothing like it at all. And of course I had a huge crush on her, as did every teen boy who knew of her and her music.
I bought every one of her albums as soon as they were released. My only regret was not getting on a plane to England to see her live a few years back.
