Genesis definitely became Phil's band in the 80's. Between Genesis and his solo work, he owned the charts.

Not true. Rutherford and Banks wrote the bulk of the music. Look back at some of Phil's comments. He had a hard time singing Abacab because he didn't know what it meant. And he had some issues with what Domino was all about. Why? Because he didn't write them.

    • @TheChristOfRockNRoll

@@porcupinecraig Both Abacab and Domino were credited on the album to Collins, Rutherford and Banks as do the bulk of the Genesis songs during the Phil era especially in the 80s. Phil may not have written the lyrics to Abacab and Domino but he contributed to the music of the song. However Kitty is right because the pop sound and influence of Collins crept in much more so in the 80s than ever previously. Do you think without Phil Genesis would have become poppier with songs like In Too Deep (classic Phil sound), Invisible Touch, Throwing It All Away, Please Don't Ask, Taking It All Too Hard, That's All, Illegal Alien etc. Put it this way if the credit says "Collins, Rutherford and Banks" and it sounds pop Phil is the culprit! LOL

@@TheChristOfRockNRoll I agree...Collins never really planned on having a "solo" career....after his wife left, he started recording some sad songs in his house to vent his depression and heartbreak (In The Air Tonight/If Leaving Me is Easy/Missed Again for examples) one day Genesis' manager stopped by to check on Phil, and happened to hear some of his work and said "wow...this stuff is really good..why not record a solo record?" (Genesis was on a break and he thought the songs were too "simple for Genesis") so...he did record the songs and they were huge. Genesis eventually changed their entire sound after the success of his pop solo albums.

Best part of Throwing It All Away is the last verse-
    Some day you'll be sorry
    Someday when you're free
    Memories will remind you
That our love was meant to be
Late at night when you call my name
    The only sound you'll hear
Is the sound of your voice calling
    Calling after me.
The tenderness of the first few verses turns to anger and resentment.

Actually, like most rock stars talking politics, Genesis was completely wrong. Ronald Reagan played the Soviet Union into collapse with a complex set of decisions that went so far over the guys from Genesis heads', while they were portraying him as dumb and careless, Reagan was saving the world while smiling and bringing a hope and peace to America that lasted all the way through the 90's.
I love Genesis but ill get my political analysis elsewhere.

YES PLEASE. Tony had such a vision of the band dividing functions and creating polyphony and wide arrangements. He does not shred like emmerson or wakeman but he gives emotion to his touch and chord inversions. Through the years playin tony's music in my cover band i've learned a lot with him, and moved to a restricted bossa nova player to a more flexible one.

Tony is the MOST underrated, discounted, and uncelebrated keyboardist, musician, and composer. His keyboard solos of the '70s ARE the songs; they're the most hummable (you can hum every solo he did), moving, and memorable passages of 70's era Genesis. The songs built up to those remarkable melodies and just stuck with you for weeks/years.
Kieth Emerson struck me in the same way, however, with MUCH more complexity. Kieth got away with it; Tony never had to wow you as Kieth did. 70's Genesis made their complex music sound so simple. 80's almost made the simple sound so complex.

Phil Collins is the most maligned ultra successful musician ever. Just watch his No Ticket Required show from circa 1986 and tell me he wasn't a GREAT live performer and gave it all on stage. Phil is ultra talented and deserves his success. It's such a shame he now has serious physical problems and his voice is shot. Phil pre-1995 is just sublime.

And if I may nitpick, his “No Ticket Required” video was actually filmed in 1985. I remember seeing it on Laserdisc for years but could never afford one. Finally found one on VHS & I’ve watched it so many times, i’ve lost count.

I was born in '81 and knew of many of these songs, however; I first learned of Genesis from the Disturbed remake of Land of Confusion in 2006, I felt the lyrics so strongly that I did research, learned of Genesis, then learned of Phil Colins. I have since watched and read as much about the man as I could. I idolize Phil Colins and the great lengths he went to in the 80's to balance between his solo career and touring with Genesis at the same time, at times going many many hours with no sleep between shows flying from Europe to the USA. The professor hit the nail on the head about Land of Confusion, a song that was made in the 80's just as much relevant today as it was then. It's a shame that in the early 90's Phil felt that the music industry was turning on him which made him really start to step back and away a lot.
I have always hoped to meet Phil Colins at least once in my life, however his last tour with Genesis did not come close to Maine and I was not able to go.
Both Genesis and Phil Colins as a solo artist will always be on my playlists until the day I die.

Without a doubt, Phil Collins WAS the 80's. Every single year he charted high with some song. Solo, Genesis, Phillip Bailey...
    My 5er:
    5. Misunderstanding - Some people lash out at a cheating partner. Some write this classic.
    4. ABACAB - The intro just melts your face, it's that awesome!!
    3. Land Of Confusion - I too loved the old Spitting Image show. Released on my birthday in 1986. What a way to celebrate becoming 13.
    2. Just A Job To Do - Criminally underrated Genesis song. Overshadowed by the rest of the Genesis album. Most people have never heard it. Should have been a hit.
    1. That's All - One of my top 10 songs from the 80's. That keyboard hook never gets old. As a 10 year old, I loved the opposites in the lyrics. Not knowing the meaning until much later.

I first came to appreciate Genesis in the early 90s, mostly by the way of Phil Collins solo work. Just in the past couple of years have I fully come to understand what a legendary band Genesis truly is. Their body of work as individuals and together is immense and “impressive” doesn’t even begin to describe it. It’s with the three of them together Phil, Tony & Mike, however, that all of their deep and broad talents can shine the most. I was fortunate to catch the time-limited broadcast on UA-cam of their last big concert in Rome in 2007. This was the full concert and it was Fab-U-lous! I have since watched quite a few docs about the band and the three core members and got so wrapped up and dazzled by their great talents. Of course, their other regular (now longtime) drummer and guitarist ( can’t recall their names) are top-notch! Enjoyed your history & commentary of Genesis...thanks!

Then, in 1980 I started hearing "Turn It On Again" and "Misunderstanding" and knew I liked them. 1981 was a breakout year for me. I was 16, I got my driver's licence, both Phil and Genesis were on the radio, and I was hooked permanently. My favourite song is "Follow You Follow me". From mid-November 1990, to December 10th when I left for basic training, This was my life soundtrack. The tracks seemed to mirror the late fall New Jersey weather. Cold. A little bleak, a little blustery. I was anxious about the start of my new life. Doubly so, because of war looming with Iraq. Duke's Travels and Duke's End echoed my life in that moment. So much so, that if I want to time travel? I put Duke on the playlist, and I'm right back in 1990.

Well it really don't matter much where you are
'Cause home is in your heart
It's a feeling that you wake with one day
Some people keep running all their life
And still find they haven't gone too far
They don't see it's the feeling inside
    The feeling inside oh

Genesis ruled in the 80’s. At one time Genesis, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel & Mike & the Mechanics (Mike Rutherford) all had songs in the Top Ten - at the same time!!!!! Talk about dominance!

One of the greatest rock bands of all time. I cannot think of another band that within the same album were able to create so much variation in their style and yet still achieve such huge success. At no point in time did you feel like they were “sticking to the formula” or trying to maintain a specific sound. They had an amazing ability to craft songs that left you wanting more. Every album is timeless and maintains value today.

I think the vocal performance on That’s All is brilliant. The way Phil slides between annoyance, frustration, anger and maybe a little regret, it’s just so excellent. Most artists would give us one or two emotions. Phil understands nuance.

A little off topic but ...
Ever since I saw Sing Street I can't help but think of this line any time I hear Genesis or Phil Collins "No self respecting woman could ever fall in love with a man who listens to Phil Collins" Still ...he provided many songs to the soundtrack of my youth. Driving around for hours into the night listening to In the Air Tonight -good times.

Without a doubt, Phil Collins ruled the airwaves of the 1980's, both solo and with Genesis. For me, these are my Top 5 favorite Genesis songs from the 1980's.
    5. No Reply At All
    4. Keep It Dark (I love the clash of a straight beat while the guitar riff is played backwards)
    3. Land Of Confusion
    2. Just A Job To Do (A deep album cut from 83's 'Genesis' that still blows my mind how good it is, especially the lyrics)

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your *. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite. - Patrick Bateman's Fiver

Me and my then wife went to see them on the Invisible touch tour at Roundhay park in Leeds ( UK) in 1988. Shortly after, I discovered that whilst I was working nights providing for my family, she was being unfaithful with some of my friends, we split up, got back together, but what an elephant in the room, finally she asked me to leave, and I did, It still stabs me in the heart when I hear the song, but I carried on, had a lot of fun after being married, I played the game for a bit , then settled down , and now have never been as happy as I am now , with my new wife, we have been together 16 years, and been married 15 years !

It's funny-- in the mid-80s I was a total metal head and had no appreciation for Genesis... and in my closest friends group, I was the oldest, and thus the only one with a driver's license (and a car) at the time when Genesis toured in the northeast. My friends all wanted to go to the show in Philly (prob '86 or '87) and offered to buy my ticket if I would drive. I looked at it as a chance to road trip to Philly (in hindsight, I still can't believe ANY and ALL of our parents allowed that to happen?!?) with my buddies, get drunk and tailgate, and watch some (probably boring) live music by a popular band... To this day, I still maintain that Genesis show at the Vet outdoor stadium in Philly was one of the top 5 BEST concerts I have seen, out of the 200+ I have attended since. I was blown away by the musicianship, the vocals, the light show, and the songs were so much better than I expected (and I was mostly sober by showtime). Funny how that happened -- a band and show I really had no interest or appreciation blew me away, and their event still holds a firm place in the pantheon of my lifetime concert experiences.
PS: you do really great work here too Prof!
