- Our most popular video, DreamWorks' CANCELLED Masterpiece, all about Me And My Shadow, is 2 and a half years old. And a good chunk of things have changed since then. And though I would not at all call that old video outdated or anything, it DOES feature a whole lot less footage than we have available now. So as a simple little expansion, to a beloved deleted project, I thought I would share with you some of the footage that has been revealed since making that video. From more sketches, storyboarding, or full 3D sequences, here is an extended look at Me And My Shadow, as They Found NEW FOOTAGE of DreamWork's Deleted Masterpiece...

...No progress on this movie actually being made. But we sure can dream, eh?
So it turns out, the supercut video I reference throughout this video was not made by the person I credit. The original compiler was actually SQUIDWORD15, and their footage was NOT interpolated at 50fps haha, but they unlisted their version, so naturally I missed the original. Still, here's the REAL version if you were interested in seeing it yourself: ua-cam.com/video/fqLIW8uqqu0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SQUIDWORD15
Thanks man I appreciate it
Sorry for all the trouble I was just really really worried about this
Thank you- thank you
wouldn't it be crazy if all of this was free marketing for the movie that they have been working on. even crazier, you know about this and are the marketer
Please review the Ernest movies they are really old and no one talks about them but they are good comedy classics
Thank you! Interpolation ruins animation and it was driving me crazy.
Honestly it would be a miracle if they revived this film.
I mean Nimona was quite dead before Netflix revived it lets hopeit gets revived in the early future!
@@elver2218 exactly
It would also be a miracle if Disney revived Gigantic.
miracle MUSICAL?!?!?! this movie makes me think of tally hall im cry
They are reviving the Peanuts Movie 2, so... It's not impossible!
It's such a shame that this movie never got made. The premise alone sounds like theblueprint for a masterpiece, but this new footage absolutely cements that. I can't imagine the effort it took to creat this combination of animation styles. I hope one day the idea will be resurrected and we can see it in it's full glory.

Definitely was NOT expecting to see more information regarding this movie to come out.
but im so glad we did
Wait what?

This actually could've been a good film to watch. It's like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was a protege of this film with some of those darker aspects. Maybe they could bring it back in the future with enough demand, who knows?
Fr. Maybe they were tryna see how well a "darker" film would do to test the waters
@@loading...948SPLATOON PFP
@@loading...948 wouldn't it be better to do it in a new movie than for a sequel of a loved movie
@@mariotheundying people are more likely to watch the sequel to a successful movie. That's deliberate. If that style did not succed, then they'd still atleast make money because of brand recognition.
I did a watch party with friends for The Last Wish and we were fully prepared to meme on it, screaming SHREK!! at the Dreamworks logo. I'm still blown away by how good it is, and as the days go by since its release I'm more impressed that Disney is falling behind while Dreamworks is seizing the opportunity to make better movies. The animations with lower framerate sprinkled in, the overall experimentation (clearly in Me and My Shadow they would've had a lot of fun blending two animation types that lots of people have been DYING to see again! People want 2D!!! The painterly style of Puss in Boots was amazing, as well as the choppy scenes whenever Puss is panicking), the music compositions. I have no doubt if we get Shadows, it'll be fantastic. At the very least, it'll be super eye candy due to how fluid the characters are, 3D and 2D.
The scene where Shadow Dan is trying to tell Daniel about what's happening and Daniel turns off the light convinced me I need this movie.
We must convince Katz to revive
I really wish Katz would green lit this!
Whats Katz?
@@summergolding1539 Katz as Jeffrey Katzenber the dreamworks ceo/ejecutive, he has the ability to greenlit any ideas, basically (if im not mistaken)
@@capuchinosofia4771 OH, THEN YES PLS
Honestly if dreamworks ever starts to have a downfall, this should be the big red “in case of emergency” button. I just love the concept behind the movie and I would love to see it come to fruition.
The fact that DA is slipping into the "live action version of an animated film they already made" territory is TERRIFYING to me. I'm really worried it's the beginning of the end.
I really hope that DreamWorks doesn’t cancel movies that much again. It will only depend on either the success’ of other releases they make and the confidence They and Universal have. But seriously, please don’t cancel more movies DW! We want to see you express that creativity you have!
animated movies takes a long time and cost more, cgi is more expensive
WB got both of them beat, and they’ve been taken to court over it
@@kitestarcrazy times. Though, movies that were initially cancelled or shelved have been revived. So I feel that progress is being made
With streaming platforms now existing I dont think there will be as many cancellations anymore, like DreamWork is releasing a movie with Netflix, but I they have also release tv shows on Apple, etc so even if they might not see it working in theaters a streaming platform might bid to own the movie, Nimona is a perfect example.
@@lastmonarchistproduction_253no cgi is cheaper than 2d animation. Thats why disney only does 3d cgi movies now really
The more I learn about this, the more I'm upset that this was canceled. From the found footage, it's clear that this was an amazing idea, and seems to have been well executed, at least in the little bit we've seen. Truly a tragedy.
This film just seems so much more imaginative and fun than so many of the recent projects they’ve been releasing lately
I'd say it definitely is better than the teenage kraken movie, but I'd argue it's actually on par with Puss in boots 2 and the bad guys :)
Its better than 99% of the movies actually
I am sure it is no coincidence that the design of the Evil Shadow resembles those old Neighbourhood Watch stickers with the shadowy looking "suspicious" guy on them.
There exists a photo from the directors instagram which is of one of the neighborhood watch signs
What’s crazy about this compared to other cancelled films is how reviving other projects might result in something feeling dated, while reviving and releasing this would still be just as cutting-edge in the late 2020s as it would have been in its originally-planned 2013 release window.
If we saw it in 2013 it would have blown ALL other movies
Shouldn’t it be better for Dreamworks to release a movie with 2D elements now that Spiderverse has influenced many people and it’s a beloved style? I think it’s a missed opportunity more than ever
Spider verse is 2d on 3d but I do agree that DreamWorks should do something similar
imagine its not cancelled and dreamworks has just decided "f it, advertise the movie with controlled leaks"
god i WISH
Just like deadpool
If thats even 1% true its taking insanely long
The fact Tom hiddleston would’ve voiced the villian and bill harder as the shadow Dan is amazing. This movie needs a petition to get back on the shelf to make and or finish
This can be DreamWorks’ answer to Pixar’s Inside Out and Soul
They should have brought back Me and My Shadow, the concept of having shadows being 2D; with everything else being 3D. The creativity sounds intriguing!
with so much footage that got leaked from me and my shadow over the years I bet someone could make an 80% accurate script of the whole movie
This may have been Dreamworks most ambitious film. It also feels like one of the most creative and original ideas from any animation studio. I can't imagine any future Dreamworks movie being better than if they picked this up again.
The "blooper" you mentioned at about 8:38 with the camera stuck on the lamp seems to be more about them testing how the shadow would increase in size relative to the other objects in the scene. By attaching the camera to the lamp and pulling back you see the 2D non-dynamic shadow stay the same size relative to the camera, but all proper 3D objects get smaller as you pull away. Seems an easy way to compute the distortion of the shadow increasing in size relative to the objects vs lamp position. You can then easily switch to another camera that's stationary to the 3D objects in the room showing a massive shadow dynamically change it's size as the lamp moves. So that said, not a blooper, but intentionally done.
I have high confidence that if this movie gets uncancelled and actually releases it will be the best movie of the 2020s for at least a while
First OG Shrek and now this, I'm hyped for the recent lost footage findings!!
It's a real shame they cancled this project. It looks like it would have been a really fun movie to watch.
When the world needed it most….
It returned
i could see the thing being cancelled due to tech reasons tbh, since youd have to do stuff to go from rendering to not rendering shadows and figuring out where those shadows would normally be and all sorts of things to keep in mind that you would honestly want a computer to calculate for you to make the process of getting the 2d into the 3d faster/easier they probably tried to make their own program or something to make it easier but i can see the possibility of it not being convenient enough to go deeper into production.
The process included 2 different cameras, one from the object's perspective where the shadow was cast, and another shot camera which was used for the final scene. The animators would look through the shadow camera and rough in the basic animation, adjusting it as they went along. This process would repeat until the animation was finished, then it would be passed on to the ink and paint department and finally used as a mask to block light from whatever light source. Dreamworks actually made a patent for it and spent a lot of money on it, but it wouldn't see public use until this year's Trolls film.
That's a good point but the reason it was cancelled is that at the time DW was dealing with frequently changing management and financial issues. As a result the executives had to choose between this and Mr. Peabody and Sherman. They made the decision because they felt the latter was more likely to succeed
Yes, it would be expensive, but Treasure Planet is a thing.
@@WobblesandBean And treasure planet was a financial failure
Am sad that if this had gone on fully as intended it'd be Josh Gad as the main character because of things going on in the world, but I still would love to see this completed with a good cast. It's just so facinating and the first time in awhile we've had a proper instance of 3d animation interacting with 2d animation. And it's actually used as an important factor in the story in a way unlike Wish.
Yeah, I agree. I mourn the time when studios cast actual voice actors, and not whichever celebrity is popular at that time.
and let's not forget that his voice honestly doesn't even fit the character when you listen and look.
The reason it’s interpolated is to get around copyright.
No, it's because someone stole my video and interpolated so it looked smoother. I've told that uploader to take it down but unfortunately he hasnt.
the fact that there’s a big fan base for this movie and there HASNT been any signs of this project being revived just BAFFLES ME. you would think that because of how much praise this movie has, they would tease something about bringing it back
I hate when people interpolate animations like this because it just removes so much of the charm
THANK YOU
I went to an art school that frequently had animators and artists give seminars. I vaguely remember a Disney/Pixar animator coming in to give a talk and show some rough clips from an upcoming movie. I distinctly remember one being a slow dance scene between a man and a woman. I’ve since forgotten the actual title he said it belong to, but I’m pretty sure it either belonged to this movie or encanto.
It is genuinely a crime that such good animation got canned, I really hope we can see more of this some day.
It looks so nice for unfinished work! Honestly, I don't mind watching it at all
When plotting shadows you use the source-light's point of view as the guide to where they land. The shot from the lamp was to plot where we would see Shadow Dan on the wall.
I actually saw some of this. DreamWorks was working on it when I visited with someone working there. Didn't see much though and I don't remember it too well cause that was a while ago now. I'm always happy to see stuff about it cause it looked really cool!
Every time you say “The Shadow Realm,” it makes me imagine this movie crossing over with YuGi-Oh.
It's a reall shame this got canceld. It sounds like such an interesting movie to watch with so much potential and lot's of interesting stuff to see in the animation department 🙃.
Scott The Woz
this just made me sad bc the concept looks soooo good, meanwhile all the animations we’ve been getting are sequels & revivals. BRING BACK ORIGINAL IDEAS 😭
I swear the more I hear about this the MORE I want this film to come to fruition
It’s too bad, I mean think of all the people who thought they were gonna get a chance to work on this together it’s a shame to throw a project away like this but if nobody even wants to look at it
I hope the new content means they’re working on it.
New ≠ recent
This would have been such a good film. I hope every day it gets Nimona's miracle and gets picked up again
Why the hell did the uploader of the footage go all to the trouble of making it look worse? I'm glad we have it but like damn
That’s not the highest quality footage there is. There’s higher quality footage of the clips.
To avoid it getting taken down
Because they stole my video
I didn't interpolate it
@@CocatGaming how does interpolating it more make it higher quality? If anything it worsens it because it completely negates the effects of the keyframes
@@elokin300 I never said that.
I seriously hope they bring this back. How can it be edgy when they got Puss in Boots 2 doing its thing?
So Dreamwork will make three troll movies but they won't make this Masterpiece.
I feel like Dreamworks once viewed as a studio that wishes it could fill Pixar's shoes is starting to take Disney's Pixar's crown and Illumination is also seeming to come out on top.
So I worked at DreamWorks for 4 years and was SO bummed to learn that this movie existed on their server but would never see the light of day. The lamp scene you mentioned was exactly the thing that made my jaw drop - I'm so happy that it somehow got leaked out and people can commiserate with me now lol. I heard it had a lot of story issues and that's why it was shelved, which tbh as beautiful as this movie would have been, is probably for the best.
I think the talking cat WAS the cat's shadow, possibly?
A lot of these 2D animations that don't seem to have a place in the movie are often some sort of semi audition for animators, semi style test for the studio. In the Stuart Little DVD, they show in behind the scenes that they gave a bunch of animators the model for the mouse and a few props in a setting, and let each of them animate them however they please. And then the best ones became the animation leads who defined the quirks of Stuart. You can absolutely tell how some are janky, some are good but just don't have the spirit in them, and some have obviously influenced the movie as a whole. But they were just demo tests with no role in the movie.
Something similar was released for Big Hero 6: the walk animation tests. They had multiple people animate each of the team walking into the café carrying themselves differently, in order to fine tune their style and set them apart from one another.
12:16 is that Alan slivestri's night at the museum.
Yes
Yes
I feel like now would be a better time than ever to bring this back with the rise of stylistic animation.
Hey Dazz, there is a free digital book called Drawing for Nothing- it's an art book for cancelled films. And it has a lot of new pictures for me and my shadow, as well as B.O.O. And some other very interesting cancelled/failed films, like concept art for the original version of FoodFight.
My mind is running wild with possibility. Dan works at a lightbulb factory, and if shadows only enter the shadow world when not visible in the real world, then the shadow world disappearing makes sense since as people are installing lightbulbs, more shadows need to be present and projected in the real world. Maybe the villain shadow did something that got it's caster imprisoned, and now that houses and institutions are installing more lightbulbs, THAT'S the threat of him being let out.
The fact that this got cancelled after Ris of the Guardians failed... it hits hard.
The shadow world is disappearing because it is day time and the shadows are leaving the shadow world and are going into the real world
Man, I hope this gets picked up again someday. This movie sounded so good!
SO YOU'RE TELLING ME WE COULD HAVE HAD AN EDGAR WRIGHT ANIMATED MOVIE
It's sad to see this movie be cancelled when we haven't had that many good animated movies the last few years
The scene at 8:40 is meant to be from the perspective of the lamp, showing how the shadow should be stretched and changed from the lamp being moved around
Perhaps the movie has something to do with light pollution. Dan probably works for a big corp lighting manufacturer, and the overabundance of bright lights is destroying the shadow world. Much like in our world.... Too much light, trying to make night into day. Brighter is not necessarily better. I miss seeing the stars from my backyard.
I’m pretty sure the me and my shadow canceled video was my very first video I saw from you and made me subscribe.
Can't believe Dreamworks canceled a Scott the Woz movie
I love how it gives me iron giant vibs in the shadows animation style
Man, it is disappointing that this didn't come to fruition but I feel like more than anything it's just really wasteful for all this work to have gone unused, especially the beautiful shadow animations alone that no doubt took months if not half a year to complete, and that's based off just the footage we know of. It makes me wonder if they'll at least revisit the idea for something else. This definitely would've been one of the best DreamWorks movies visually if it came to be.
This looks like something that Pixar would come up with, and the animation looks like Disney's in-house animation studio. Dreamworks could have blown their competitor away with this.
I imagine the shadow world disappearing as the sun rising :) it would make sense if following the theory that shadows return to the shadow world when not in use.. it also has some whimisical "cool moment" music.. which could follow a pretty shot of the sun rising! (I'd also like to imagine it interrupted by a morning alarm clock)
That's exactly what's happening in that clip. In the clip, it is currently dawn and the shadows are getting ready to be cast in the real world. That is why you see the trees and buildings going up into the sky. Shadow Dan is worried because he wants to see if Daniel is okay.
wouldnt it be the opposite? The shadow world only exists at night as noone can see them?
@@gabrielv.4358 yes that's what the OP is saying
I really hope this film is revived it could honestly rival DreamWorks best projects.
I will never stop missing this movie and the characters that were attached.❤
Let's get a petition to finish this movie. 🗿😎

yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Kid Danger: *wearing his big trucker pup outfit* I would love to see "me and my shadow" has a movie!
The comic with brock could have been a storyboard for a Me and My Shadow short film that could have followed the release of the movie. DreamWorks has had a few short films before, so it wouldn't be a surprise.
It was a preliminary test to explore how Shadow Dan wanted a different caster
It was unfortunately never included in any cut of the film
As a huge fan of the concept of shadow and caster interacting with each other, ever since I saw your original video about this movie, it reminded me about the puzzle video game "Shady part of me"!! It was created by french studio Douze dixièmes and it is a STUNNING game.
Playing with 2d and 3d mechanics, perspective, and lighting, even it's soundtrack and the voice acting- generally it's a work of art. If you like this movie, I think you could thoroughly enjoy playing or watching gamplays of this game!
Seems like the focus was all over the place, and with the script not entirely clear. Probably would’ve taken up a lot of budget to keep animating.
Exactly
They didn't have any idea how to progress the film, we only have plot details for the first half of the film as well as the climax
What makes me want this movie to be real is how it just looks like it could tell a really strong story. I would love even just to see the script of this movie to know how the story would've went. Also, the marketing for this movie could be "A good character design can be recognized by its silhouette alone"
Even though it's not completed, the technicality on making this and combining and integrating 2 and 3d for a full length film... Even a documentary would be good
Dreamworks has a track record for scrapping what would-be good films, just look at what happened to Shrek, the development zone for that movie was originally considered bad otherwise known as getting "Shrek'd" XD
i hadnt heard of this movie before, but just the title and thumbnail was already enough to interest me, it sounds like a very interesting concept and the footage we have looks very cool
THIS WOULD'VE BEEN MY FAVOURITE CARTOON WHY DID THEY CANCELLED IT IT LOOKED GORGEOUS WITH BRILLIANT IDEA AND SONGS FROM OWL CITY 😭😭😭
I think maybe if the people that made spider-verse had some time- they could make this really good.
6:30 is not Dan and the cat, its their shadows. That's why the cat talks and that's why it says "Shadows now arriving from sector 43."
8:38 this shot may actually be just what they wanted; when working with shadows in game development, shadows are calculated by having a "camera" draw the scene from the light source perspective, then projecting what the light source camera "sees" onto what the player is actually seeing...its pretty technical, but the end result is a realistic, real time shadow that will change perspective as the light source moves without having to do raytracing
That's exactly correct
Honestly i think Jim Carrey would do awesome to play this guy. He has the same face shape.
On top of that, imagine from Liar Liar the scene where he says hes kicking his own butt, but with this dude and his shadow. Lol
Oh my god it’s Neil Cicirega
Oh my goodddddd
why does he look like that guy in megamind that megamind turned in to to go on a date with that other person
This canceled movie sound really good. Hope dreamworks picks it up again.
it’s a shame that this was never made. Adam Young (Owl City) was supposedly heavily involved in the soundtrack!!
Honestly, they need to finish this film. This would feel like those early 21st century disney/dreamworks adventure animations like the animated Atlantis movie. It would honestly be a classic movie made in the modern era. Such a shame it's been shelved for so long.
I feel like this could have been the Dreamworks answer to Pixar Inside Out if they didn't cancelled it.
Yes!This movie could've been made...but what could be the plot?
The plot of Me and My Shadow is about Daniel Grubb, a boring man who works at a lightbulb factory, and Shadow Dan, his shadow. When a jealous Shadow sees Daniel and Dan interacting, he decides to purge the human world into darkness. It's up to Daniel and Dan to stop him and become better friends.
This is beautiful, and a nice concept. Hopefully they bring this back. Its unfortunate.
18:25 - to me, it seems like a story/flashback of why interacting a shadow with its caster is a bad idea, evident by the gopher being scared back into his home.
I'm not going to argue any of the other points you made in this video, but WHY does everyone hate Ruby Gillman so much? It wasn’t exactly brilliant film-making, but I found myself thoroughly entertained by it, and there was something nice about it just being a fun watch.
3:38 reaaalllllyyyy sounds like the track for Soarin’ at Disney World, but I may be wrong
My guess for the shadow realm "disappearing" scene was actually what it looks like in the shadow realm when the sun rises. Rather than things disappearing all around shadow dan, it seems to be coming towards him, like sunlight spreading across the street. you can see how taller objects disappear sooner, like light is hitting them first as it pours over the rooftops. As for shadow dans expression, rather then scared his body and face give me the impression that he is anxious and impatient like he`s trying to egg on the light to reach him so he can go back to the casters world and dan. That`s also my guess as to why the music was so cheery, it kind of gave off a hopeful resolution or saving grace kind of vibe. maybe he has to save dan but it was night so he wasn`t being casted, or maybe now that its morning dan has to wake up for work and will be stepping into some sort of light. my guess is shadow dan was anxious to get back to real dan to tell him about the evil shadow.
That's 100% correct
I’m just genuinely sad that they never went through with this movie- I really hope that do actually pick up it again and make the movie someday. 😭😭
I love that it looks like classic Disney meets modern day Pixar. Shame it didn't get picked up.
hey DreamWorks, it's never too late. make this movie
hes literally the guy from ItsOkayToBeSmart
Namona took forever to get made and it did. i have faith
I can feel that DreamWork's gonna pick this movie up like a dusted out toy in the attic
PLEASE PLEASE DREAMWORKS PLEASE pick this project again, 2d movies are dead, this could be the thing to bring them back
I had forgotten how stunningly beautiful the 2D on 3D look was.
If they every want to pick this project up again, I would be overjoyed.
The shadow gives me huge Milo vibes (and I really love Atlantis).
