Sorry Paul. This was my first video ever and I was trying to give some background about the channel. I suppose I should have done that in a separate video. I'm not a very good youtuber.
@@KyleKholin I disagree, I love your content and wish you pursued further however I respect that you have things going on as everyone does and wish you well.
Lol as you noticed, this group reinvented a cappella. They've won three Grammys so far. Some of their covers you may enjoy is The Sound of Silence and Bohemian Rhapsody. I've seen them live seen times and I can guarantee they sound even better live. That tenor you are talking about is Mitch Grassi and is amazing. His voice is a bit higher the beat boxer is Kevin Olusola and the guy is just sick. The beat boxing in this song is nothing for. He even plays cello while beatboxing. It's all a cappella 100%. Great first reaction!
Mitch is actually what they call a counter tenor. Chris Coelfer from Glee is another counter-tenor. His voice is amazing as are the rest of the voices!
Avi actually went so low, and carried the sound to the point he blew up a base Amp while warming up for a concert! He has an astoundingly amazing voice, as do all of the other members of the group. I was sad when he left the group, but they found someone who blends very well with the group.
The names are: Scott (baritone, tall blond), Mitch (tenor), Avi (bass)*, Kirstie (mezzo-soprano), Kevin (beatboxer/tenor/cello). *Avi left the group in late 2017, and was replaced by Matt in 2018. Mitch & Kirstie change styles frequently which leads people to think they are different people, but the only lineup change that has occurred is the bass. PTX uses very light editing on their albums, but are careful to record a version that will sound very much the same as when they sing live. For instance, they’ll double the beatbox track in the recording, or similar. But every sound you hear is made by the 5 of them.
kevin's beatboxing sometimes sounds like it has effects or reverb because of the way they layer it with avis bass notes. usually very little editing on the vocals!
Great reaction! First - Yes, Kevin (beatboxer) is amazing. The beat is mostly him with a small amount of reverb. When they perform live, he sounds almost the same with no effects. Second - In the background, you also hear the deep bass voice dude, Avi (beard & beanie) doing a pounding bass rhythm. Third - Yes, Mitch can sing that high without falsetto. He and the girl, Kirstie, have almost the same range, which makes for great harmony. Scott, blonde baritone (first singer), rounds out the group. Fourth - You have a great friend to ask you to check this out, and to suggest headphones. You miss a lot of what the bass and beatboxer are doing without them. Finally, since you like rock, they did a great cover of Bohemian Rhapsody.
His High voice Is His!!! He is unusual....The Beat boxer sings & plays all instruments they are all unusual separately! Soo much fun to watch your surprised reactions. Lol
I saw them 3 years ago in Walt Disney World and they were really good with no instruments in sight for maybe a 100 people. Little did I know of their future success.
LOVED the reaction. I always love peoples first reaction to Pentatonix because it's always the same as mine was and this happened to be the first song I ever heard them do. You should check out their version of "Hallelujah". And Mitch's voice is naturally that high. The more you watch the more you will appreciate just how "effortlessly" he sings. Again LOVED the reaction!

Thanks for the reaction. You are very good at it. Your reactions seem genuine, which is somewhat rare these days. Pentatonix is very good at what they do. Great voices and percussion. The secret of their success is a combination of those voices and their arrangements. They know how to utilize their talents to the fullest extent. You will see in their other videos just how far that talent takes them and us. Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence are some of their most popular videos. But they make a lot of Christmas videos also. Try Carol of the Bells or Here Comes Santa Claus. Thanks again for the reaction.

Kevin doesn't get to sing as often because they need him to hold down the beat. Um, I would recommend definately checking out Kevin's solo stuff (Renegade, Down-Marian Hill and SIgn of the Times-Harry styles KOver). Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a great song by Pentatonix. I listen to it on repeat every Christmas (since it came out) A reaction to that would be fun
Dude....my nerves are SHOT after this reaction lol. Every time you stopped the video you had that look of recognition in your eyes. I was like "I know he's not about to tell me he remembers this song...not after that disclaimer lol. 😉
Great reaction and welcome to the PTX family. Once they draw you in you take one hell of a trip down the rabbit hole. Avi is the one with the deep voice. (This is an old video and unfortunately he is no longer with PTX) Scott is the tall blonde, Kirstie is the female, Kevin is the beat boxer and yes that is all him. He is probably the most talented beat boxer on the planet and last is Mitch, and this song actually doesn't do his voice justice. He is amazing in this but he can go so much higher. Everything about his voice is what most people would expect from a female singer. I think he has ranked up there in the top five performers in the world that can reach as high as he can. Mitch's vocal range is insane. If you want to keep checking out PTX there is sooooo many you need to take a look at. Bohemian Rhapsody, Aha! Live in Singapore, Run to You, Sing, Daft Punk, Imagine, Gold, just to name a few. Also, Scott and Mitch are part of a second group they put together that is just the two of them called Superfruit. They have some amazing stuff. And last, yes, PTX is all them. Everything you hear they do with their voices or bodies. A few later songs Kevin plays his Cello (while beat boxing at the same time) but that's it. Say Something is a good one where he does both. And he also does solo work that is amazing, that you can check out how talented he truly is. And there Christmas stuff is insane. I'm not big on Christmas music but when I listen to it, it has to be PTX. White Winter Hymnal, Sweater Weather, Dance of the Sugar Plum Faries will blow you away, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen- WOW, again, just to name a few.
Only voices, no instruments! They are my favorite acapella group. Their voices are for real, no electronics. There are many songs by them, please listen to all of it. It's not all gospel tunes, cuz they do a whole genre. You will be floored! They can all make instrumental sounds! They are fab!
Thanks for making this. You have a real talent and a genuine honesty. I'm looking forward seeing more of your reaction videos. I saw Pentatonix for the first time last summer. Everything they did was acapela, but they were using an enormous stadium PA with something like 80,000 watts of power, so the beat wave that guy created hit the audience like a bomb exploding. But then, at the end of the concert, they turned off the PA and sang completely acoustically to an audience of some 18,000, and they sounded fantastic. They obviously couldn't replicate the big bass and beat waves, but they somehow used the natural echo of the stadium to build big powerful harmonies.
Yes! It’s a pet peeve of mine too when reactors have seen it before. Loses the magic of first time listening. And good call on the headphones 😉 I’ll go ahead and request one of the medleys, maybe “Evolution of Michael Jackson”?
Oh, plenty of people try to deny it but there's a bit of enhancement on the studio versions, but not much. There are people who record them live on their cell phones with vids out there and they are pretty damned close to the studio version, given the difference of a good sound system and the minuscule speaker of a cell phone. Another A Capella group you NEED to hear is Home Free doing In The Blood. Their beat boxer is unreal. Even doesn't play a harmonica, though you'd swear he does.
Yes. Definitely check out Home Free. I'd also add Voiceplay to the list. I sang a little bass (many) years ago and Avi (formerly of Pentatonix), Tim (Home Free), and Geoff (Voiceplay) are 3 guys that can make the walls shake at the low end of their vocal range.
I read comments already so I wouldn't repeat info you already have read. I need to add that Kevin does just as good beat boxing live as seen on the A Capella Competition "The Sing-Off" which aired on NBC. Pentatonix won the 3rd season in 2011 and they becane known for the rythm and bass. They sound so big (to quote a judge) and it literally sounds like instruments are playing with the group. Another thing is Mitch Grassi, black hair, higher voice. Mitch is a Counter Tenor and he is one of those rare male counter tenors who has a timbre that makes them sounf exactly like a female if you had your eyes closed and couldnt see it was a male singing. He's expanded his range ever higher throughout the 8 years they've been a group and his control jumping all over his range gets voice coaches very excited. He has great technique, not a lot of formal training aside from Singing with Scott and Kirstie (they've been friends since the age of ten) in Choir in High School, doing arrangements and duets with Scott on their own, and the Trio (named "The Trio") the three formed in high school. But Mitch is the tenor in harmonies most of the time. As a soloist he goes all over his range.. almost always working in a high note.. the group arranges in these moments too, and Mitch jokingly acts the victim of what they're putting his voice through. A new Bass enters the scene in late 2016 when Original Bass Man Avi Kaplan leaves the group due to their constant work and touring schedule. He needs time with family thst you do not get at the pace this group keeps. Matt Sallee joins and I love both basses. But after 3 Christmas tours, 2 Summer Tours (this one is a world tour) several albums and music videos I see Matt as full-fledged member and I am only looking forward. You should check out "Bohemian Rhapsody", "AHa!" Live Singapore Star Vista Aha!" Live Singapore Star Vista ua-cam.com/video/aT2Nm4fYmI4/v-deo.html
Probably one of the best reactions vids I've seen. Lol the honest assessments of what you like and know. Gives that authenticity a reviewer should have.
Yes, they are fantastic at making great a capella arrangements of songs, often with little unexpected changes or surprises for that PTX touch. They can sound rich & full like there are instruments by layering or harmonizing just right. They have original songs as well as *tons* of covers. Besides their Christmas albums, they are mostly in the pop-rock genre but also do other genres like rap, punk, rock, r&b, etc or even imitate an orchestra. They even do songs in other languages, like Spanish, Japanese, & French, especially performing them on their live concerts for the fans there. Occasionally Kevin (the beatboxer) also plays his cello to accent a song or does a "celloboxing" performance. If there is something like his cello added besides vocals then you will see it, like when they stomp/thump their chest/clap. They have had guest collabs too, adding a 6th voice just for fun or as a way to do a great song with the original artist but do it a capella, like when they performed the country classic Jolene with Dolly Parton. For something different, they also did a fun homage to the Wizard of Oz with another singer Todrick Hall. (He's quite open with his obsession with the movie.) It's called the Wizard of Ahhhhs, & quite a fun way to see them do a medley of mostly modern songs retelling the story.
Kyle, you had the exact same reaction to Penta we had the first time we heard them, and I know you've gotten the answer by now but yes, that is totally their voices doing ALL of the instruments.
Awesome reaction!! I loved seeing your first time reaction! Kevin is an amazing beat boxer. I think you would enjoy their covers of Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence. New subscriber here!!
The thing about Pentatonix is that each member is a singular standout talent yet they are all clear on the fact that the level 10 magik happens when they combine their voices with nearly inhuman precision. They do sometimes include body slaps and stomps but they typically do not include any instruments or canned backing sounds, unless they combine with a featured artist like Lindsey Stirling. Yeah, even if their genre of music isn't your thing, you kinda have to be blown away by their sheer raw talent.
Great first time reaction. The sound and setup was great 👍🏽 I’m with you. I like the same style of music you mentioned, but Pentatonix is my acapella obsession! The way they arrange their songs is the best I’ve ever heard from any acapella group and really makes them unique and is also why they are at the top of their genre. Since it’s Christmas time and I mentioned their unique arrangement style, I’m gonna suggest their version of “Joy to the World” and “Little Drummer Boy”. Non-Christmas, gotta check out “Daft Punk”.
They really are just full acapella. They're using the cave to their advantage, but it's 100% them. I saw them live once, it's incredible I don't even know which one to suggest... White Winter Hymnal is impressive, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is one they put an amazing spin on.
@@joannesanders9562 No 😫 it got postponed because of COVID. Then I moved countries and had to sell my tickets so hopefully when they hold the new dates the person who bought them can at least go see them. I wanted to see them so bad too. Maybe one day they'll come to Asia and I'll be able to see them then.
I wasn’t there (LOL) but this doesn’t sound like it was recorded in that cave. Sounds like it was recorded in a studio, and the video was filmed there. That’s not to say they wouldn’t sound amazing in there!
A few have commented on them starting on the Singoff. One song they sang during this competition was born to be wild by Steppenwolf. They may not do rock songs often, but when they do them, they are Fire. Oh come all ye faithful is a cover they change the tempo of. I believe you will enjoy it. Also, new subscriber.
I enjoyed your first reaction! Thanks for trying something new - PTX has a ton of songs to choose from in different genres and you'll get lots of suggestions. They kill just about everything they do :-) Covers, originals, evolutions, mashups, musical theatre, rock classics, Christmas music - they are each hella talented and they have worked their asses off for years to get where they are. Looking forward to what you try next, PTX or not - new sub! :-) If you like progressive rock, you already know Rush and Styx, right? If not, please add them to your to-try list, as well. Good luck!
Kyle you are CLEARLY a REAL music lover... Because, even though it's 'not your jam' you can see the amazingness of the music!! I absolutely LOVE Pentatonix!!
What an amazing first choice for a first ever reaction to anything. Mary did you know was the first song that caught my attention of this group too. I had to hear it on the cd several times straight. Then I found their even better pieces but this is still one of my favorite Christmas songs to hear of all time
I think that this was the first time Kevin sang in a video, but I might be wrong. Since then he had sung in more. To truly experience his talent, search KO Olusula "Down" or any of his others. Thanks for reacting.
I'm at 2:07 and I paused it to say I'm so excited!! I love seeing people's first reaction to them, and you just said you don't generally like a capella because it is usually very "choirey" ... this is going to be awesome!!
Nice reaction, I wouldn't have guessed that it was your first video if you hadn't said so (and it wasn't the first on your channel lol) you were very natural. Mitch (the tenor) has a naturally high voice, when speaking too. What I think is more impressive than his range is his control - their cover of Gold is a good one to see that. As for less pop music, they did a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence (which I really like, although is def more pop-y than the S&G version)
Hi, It's so... lovely?... to see someone reacting to their first Pentatonix track. Not having any idea of the ride they're in for. Se as the first notes comes, the pupils dilating just that little bit. Checking if their equipment is on right. Looking bewildered as the voices weaves through each others just like liquid gold. Having to go back for another listen to a phrase, because did he/she/they do that!? Is it only the ONE beatboxer? That is a great voice! Do they sound like this? How on earth did the voices go that smooth. What Is Going On??? All of us just waiting knowingly, sharing virtual looks and amongst each other and nodding, yes that's what they sound like. No tricks. And There it is... That instant we all recognize. Another music lover converted to this oh so special vocal group. Trying to re-evaluate all they thought they knew about how music should go. All of us nodding to them. Yes they did, and they do. A couple of weeks gone, and the same person have read up on them, know their names, voice types, and registers. It doesn't matter if they come from death metal or country, blue grass or opera, they, just like we have, have found that something we all just plainly love. Yours, Ann
It really is interesting to watch their sing off stuff. They were still finding themselves as a group after adding Avi and Kevin. also, Amplified singing is always a bit curious - hearing your group through monitors is not the same as hearing your group in proper acoustics. Still, they performed well, and it's neat to watch their first strides and compare it to where they are now.
I'm a Metallica fan, STP fan, AIC, NIN, classical baroque, etc etc and I absolutely love PTX. It's all about the voice, melody and complexity of sound/harmony etc and it doesn't matter what genres I find it in, I become obsessed pretty quick !
They are so amazing!! This is my favorite Christmas song and they are my favorite group to perform it!! I post it almost every year on my FB page but I didn’t this year🤔hmmm... so I’ll post yours!! Thank you for making this video!! Happy 2020!!

Also, they have a song they do with Lindsey Stirling, check it out.....do it as a reaction video, it is awesome!
This is the 2nd PTX reaction I’ve seen by you (I know, late to the party), and it’s freakin’ AWESOME! 🤣 Not only was this your first PTX experience, it was also the very first song you ever did a UA-cam reaction to.
I really enjoyed this reaction! new subscriber :)
Yes! It’s a pet peeve of mine too when reactors have seen it before. Loses the magic of first time listening.
And good call on the headphones 😉
I’ll go ahead and request one of the medleys, maybe “Evolution of Michael Jackson”?
I'm glad you opened up your mind to allow their talent in, they are mind blowing.
Mitch has unbelievable range!!
I sang a little bass (many) years ago and Avi (formerly of Pentatonix), Tim (Home Free), and Geoff (Voiceplay) are 3 guys that can make the walls shake at the low end of their vocal range.
...And their version of Man of Constant Sorrow
And Elvira with the oak ridge boys is just fun!!!
Mitch is a natural tenor and absolutely amazing. However Avi, the bass, has always been my absolute favorite!
man all most ppl care about is that you are genuine, and it seems like you got that so gl man, youre already killin it
What makes the beatboxing even better is Avi. His deep tones and vibrations in his voice help make the tune even better.
A very moving song performed by a very moving group!
Its all vocal. They are truly amazing. You did a great job!!
I first heard them sing 'Little Drummer boy" I knew then they was different. On a whole different level. You do a good job. Nice vid.
You should check out "Bohemian Rhapsody", "AHa!" Live Singapore Star Vista Aha!" Live Singapore Star Vista

I subscribed, well done! I am looking forward to more of your videos. May you have a blessed holiday season.
Haven’t heard this song it a bit, it still gives me chills!
The sound and setup was great 👍🏽
I’m with you.
Good job...loved your reaction!!
They really are just full acapella. They're using the cave to their advantage, but it's 100% them. I saw them live once, it's incredible
I don't even know which one to suggest... White Winter Hymnal is impressive, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is one they put an amazing spin on.
I get to see them in April 2020. So excited! I have been dying to see them for years now and it's finally happening.
@@absurdashbee5988 was it cancelled for covid? We saw them in Adelaide, South Australia in Feb. Amazing.
And the cave must have had truly incredible acoustic! I can only imagine singing there. Wondering if there's a cave nearby now...
I wasn’t there (LOL) but this doesn’t sound like it was recorded in that cave. Sounds like it was recorded in a studio, and the video was filmed there. That’s not to say they wouldn’t sound amazing in there!
It is always enjoyable to watch someone hear them for the first time! Life changing! And yes, it is purely them !
I have all their Christmas songs on my UA-cam playlist. And guess what? I'm 71 years old!!
Goosebumps, every single time!
Good luck!
Loved your reaction!
Daft Punk was their first Grammy. They filmed and recorded it in their apartment.
Haha in a kitchen pantry or something like that. So amazing
And it cost them a total of something like $400 because they did it all themselves. Just AMAZING for what they turned out! :)
Kyle you are CLEARLY a REAL music lover... Because, even though it's 'not your jam' you can see the amazingness of the music!! I absolutely LOVE Pentatonix!!
Great reaction! Highly recommend Bohemian Rhapsody by them, since you say you like rock
Agreed!
Totally agree.... their BR is AMAZING!
Needs to tone down the foul language though.
IT'S ALL THEM!! LOVE THIS GROUP.
Mitch is my favorite and yes he normally sings high you should do a video on you reacting to Mitch Grassi high notes
Thanks for reacting.
...aaaaand another Pentaholic is born!
Great reaction, man! Love your authenticity.
And now, for Christmas, Home Free and "Do You Hear What I Hear" - you will not be disappointed.
Yours, Ann
You might want to watch their start on a TV Show the Sing Off.
Gerry Steppe TAKING IT ALL THE WAY BACK!😂❤️
It really is interesting to watch their sing off stuff. They were still finding themselves as a group after adding Avi and Kevin. also, Amplified singing is always a bit curious - hearing your group through monitors is not the same as hearing your group in proper acoustics. Still, they performed well, and it's neat to watch their first strides and compare it to where they are now.
Ptx is amazing you've gotta check out more from them they giver me goosebumps
No instruments, just them singing beautifully.
This was awesome! Can't believe this was your first video. You're a natural. Definitely keep doing Pentatonix.
Kevin singing
“Oh get it, get it”
LITERALLY ME EVERY TIME I HEAR KEVINS VOICE
This man is so pure! I am subbing! :)
Please reaction the PTX Bohemian Rhapsody. It is amazing.
I love people reacting to ptx for the first time :)
his voice is naturally that high. hes a tenor
I'm a Metallica fan, STP fan, AIC, NIN, classical baroque, etc etc and I absolutely love PTX. It's all about the voice, melody and complexity of sound/harmony etc and it doesn't matter what genres I find it in, I become obsessed pretty quick !
You might want to check out PTX's version of "Sound of Silence"...the best song they've ever done!
They are so amazing!! This is my favorite Christmas song and they are my favorite group to perform it!! I post it almost every year on my FB page but I didn’t this year🤔hmmm... so I’ll post yours!! Thank you for making this video!! Happy 2020!!
Try their version of Little Drummer Boy. Also, having seen them live I can say, yeah, they sound that good.
New Subscriber, and , love your honest reaction to their videos. My first song was Little Drummer Boy, a freind of mine had just seen them on their firs concert tour....I have been hooked ever since.
You chose one heckuva monster song/ group for your debut, and for that you ROCK, brother!! I love how in the beginning you said “It’s a cappella, so I don’t know if it’ll be my thing…”, and here you are now with a dedicated PTX reaction page. Truly, you are a man of great musical taste! 🤘🏾
Smart friend to recommend headphones!
It's all acappella and it's amazing! Always glad to see new reactions to PTX. Keep it up, you're doing a great job!
They are a 3 time Grammy award winners all a capella. They sometimes introduce a cello into their music. Otherwise they are 100% a capella. They cover many different types of music. Listen to their cover of Bohemian rhapsody
