Please say thank you to your wife for me. If she did not suggest PTX to you, we would never would have had such great reactions from you on PTX!!! I had chills thru out this whole reaction.
Check out the PTX version of Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy. It is a song with no words, sung by a group that uses no instruments. They won their second Grammy for this.
Pentatonix has a keen ability to connect emotionally to the song they're singing and allow the person listening to be drawn in. That's what makes them so good and able to sing almost any song. Such a great arrangement!
Scott (blonde) picks up the bass when Avi sings. He does such a great job of picking up the bass in Hallelujah. You are not the first person to be disappointed because you wanted the song to continue. It happens a lot with reactors. A good example is "The 90's Dance Medley" they sing. You don't ever want it to stop. I just subbed.
A little tidbit of ingo for you. Mark Lowry wrote this song & has sung it many times. Heard PTX's version of his song & gave them high praise for the way did this.
The goosebumps will never go away. I’m listening to your reaction and I’ve heard the song at least a couple of hundred times and it still gives me the chills. Not many singers can do that to me.
If you love this song you should listen to Amazing Grace Mad World Hallelujah Shallow Perfect Say Something And also some of their originals Can’t Sleep Love Water Ref Love Me When I Don’t Petals Never Gonna Cry Again
Avi is a classically trained basso profundo who has been offered a place with the Los Angeles opera which he turned down to join Pentatonix. Please consider reacting to his solo work as well as to PTX. Looks like you got KO'd by KO in this one! He has done some amazing solo work too.
Awesome reaction! Pretty much all Pentaholics love this song no matter if it's a t Christmas or any other time. Scott Hoying is the guy with the blond hair...a very versatile voice with a large range. He'll take over the bass when Avi is singing lead/verse. Truthfully they all have minimally a 4 octave range and all have unique strong voices that blend so well with each other. Some suggestions: Imagine, Love Again, Run To You, Be My Eyes, Come Along, Say Something, Shallow, Radioactive.
I am gobsmacked every time I watch these wonderful people sing!! The Viking got it right about this. I am tearfully grateful to be able to listen to such talent. Beautiful...😊
You seemed really struck by Kevin's solo singing in this - I like to joke that this is the only PTX song where Kevin literally has twice as many solo lines as Kirstie! While Kevin doesn't often do a lot of solo singing with PTX (he does quite a bit on his solo channel, KO, and he often is harmonizing when he's not directly beatboxing), there are a number of songs where he will do a line or two of solo singing. Amazing Grace, Say Something, A Little Space (in the studio version he is the main singer, but the official video has guest artist ATEEZ, so he has to share quite a bit more), 12 Days of Christmas, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Away In a Manger (he has a whole verse!) and the biggest is probably Imagine, where you not only hear his tenor singing voice but his amazing falsetto.
I'm glad I ran across your reactions through Pentatonix. You are by far my favorite reactor. No artificial reactions or political prespectives.Supurb.Metal or any other genre will be great. Take care and keep up great work.
I absolutely love your reaction. The fun part is when you thought you got "Mitch slapped" but us Pentaholics knew a bigger one was yet to come and I enjoyed the anticipation lol. You will enjoy "Imagine". You will say "they did it again" again. Pentatonix adds their special upgrade to this and every song. I envy your newness to the group but that is why we enjoy reactions. A chance to relive fond ear candy memories and their impact.
Another thoughtful reaction. Thank you. You noted their versatility, which I also find noteworthy as it speaks to their openness to explore. They're equally adept at covers and originals (Run to You). They span genres like pop (Mad World), Latin music (Havana), rap (Ceiling Can't Hold Us), EDM (Love Again), and more. Some of their music is contemplative (which you called a calm ecstasy) while other songs are much higher energy. They've done musical numbers (Waving Through a Window) and some that are very quirky (Wizard of Ahhs), and many medleys (Evolution of Ariana Grande). Some songs include musical instruments (Kevin on the cello in Shallow or collabs with Lindsay Stirling like Papaoutai). Finally, many have also created their own music, which allows them to explore music that doesn't really fit with Pentatonix - Mitch and Scott in Superfruit (Rise), Avi, Kevin Olusola (Down), and Kirstie. They're truly impossible to pigeonhole.
Every day is Christmas when Pentatonix is singing. I find myself listening to their Christmas songs all year long. Mitch and Kirstie sound so much alike at times that I have trouble figuring out who's singing. I've never heard another male sing whistle notes before Mitch. If you do a search on Mitch's range or just "Mitch Grassi whistle notes", you'll see a bunch of clips of him. My favorite is when he's mimicking a sharpie. Really!
Thank you for your commentary AFTER!! I get chills every single time I listen to this song, more than 9 years after I first heard it. This song and the video are impeccably done!
I love your sense of humor. Please continue exploring Pentatonix. I have my favorites, but (and I can't think of another group I would say this about) you can't make a bad choice. This early in your exploration it might be best to look through their catalog and pick something that looks interesting to you. Their covers are mostly pop music, but from various decades and genres -- Motown, EDM, pop divas, K- and J-pop, Broadway, etc. They also have original songs in a variety of pop styles.
I've heard this song (and all of their songs) hundreds of times, but something about watching you react, I'm all goosebumps and tears like it's my first time haha Love it.
You are correct. When Avi is singing, Scott does the bass. The same thing happened in Hallelujah. When Avi was singing his part, Scott picked up the bass.
I enjoyed your reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. It is definitely a Christmas song. Most Pentatonix fans listen to/watch their Christmas music and videos (and their other music) all year long. I look forward to more of your Pentatonix reactions. They have hundreds of amazing videos and songs from which to choose.
The cave for this setting was perfect to depict the birth of Christ. He was born in a stable, and in that area of the world, caves are everywhere and were used as stables. They provided protection and warmth for animals as well as humans.
This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs. I love it so so much. Words could never express the beauty and warmth that just washes over you when you listen to this. Much love!
Choosing what to watch next can be quite a tough one, there are so many good PTX songs & vids. I guess it would depend whether you want more like this (then Imagine or Amazing Grace, Sound of Silence), something very different (Daft Punk, Cheerleader, Can't Hold Us, or Radioactive), or even dipping into their originals (Sing, Happy Now, Run To You, Love Again). Kirstin & Mitch are great at passing between them so smoothly you have a moment of "wait when did they switch?" Especially if you're not watching them, only listening. As for you mentioning that Avi wasn't the only one singing bass. There are times Scott will double Avi's bass, or harmonise down there with him, it's not often, but it does happen sometimes. More often it's noted that he takes over the bass line when Avi sings lead (like in Hallelujah). If you want more of Kevin's angelic voice, Imagine is definitely a good song for you to check out, also Amazing Grace, and 12 Days Of Christmas. The Mitch slap version for Kevin is a K.O. (his initials and what he used to be called when he would beatbox in high school, it's also his channel name). He also has a mix of solo stuff on his K.O. channel, such as Down or Sign Of The Times, that will blow your mind. I'm sure others have already said, but Avi now has a solo career, I'm sure the viking in you will appreciate Change On The Rise.
You mentioned the lighting and the setting a few times. Did you notice how often there was a shot of Kirstie backlit by the bright cave opening? Symbolizing a halo around Mary perhaps?
I'm an atheist since I was 14/15 and I was 42 I think and I loved so much that performance that I found one video with lyrics in Portuguese to show to my parents who are catholics. They REAAAAAAALY loved and for so many days they where trying singing by the house without knowing English at all.😅 PS: my English sucks to write but I hear and listen very well. And I only speak if I REALLY have to because is almost awfully as my singing skills which are negative skills! 😅
My favorite Christmas song ever. Such pure vocals. Watching it though i couldnt help but notice Kristin's candle was replaced by a fake one right after Mitch sings "kiss the face of God". Hers must have kept going out. Now i cant not see it.
Ah the Mitch effect is strong in this one! Not only does he have that amazing voice, but he delivers the line that packs a punch. "When you kiss your baby boy, you kiss the face of God." Your wife has excellent taste in music. Let her know. And you've got a new subscriber as I enjoyed your take on this. ❤️❤️ (For you and the Mrs.) May God bless you both.
To really hear what Avi and Mitch can do you have to watch the video of Aha taped in Singapore at the Star Vista. It's a fan video done on a cellphone but nonetheless really crazy amazing. Oh-and believe it or not Kevin believed he could not sing, but he worked with Avi to bring out that voice.
Some PTX terms I've seen you appear to have experienced: Wall of Sound. Mitch-Slapped. Avi-lanched (buried by a bass avalanche). K.O'd. (Knocked Out by Kevin Olushua , his initials- KO.) Now fully exposed, you may very soon be diagnosed as a Pentaholic. This is not a bad thing. Loved your reaction! Can't think of any affliction for Kirsten or Scott yet. How about Thirsty for Kirsty 😒? So glad you mentioned the spiritual significance of the cave- Christ's birth, burial, and resurrection. (BTW This was used for the Batcave in the 60's TV series Batman.)
It’s sad yet filled with hope. That maybe what you were trying too say. Soz Love 💕 I’m not a mind reader, but that’s what I got from it!!!!! 🤷♀️❤️🙏🇬🇧🙏❤️🇬🇧🤷♀️🙏
Did you know that before Kevin joined the group he was studying to become a doctor? I think I heard he was pre-med or further when he decided to he was going to pursue music as a career. Also someone brought up a coincidence about this video (primarily when it started) and that is how is was very similar to The Ood from Dr Who. Not sure if that was intended (maybe someone is a huge Dr Who fan) or it just happened.
That whole album is fantastic! This is my favorite PTX song. The light coming from the cave is intentional; It has a few moments of when the camera goes to Kirstin the light surrounds her whole head to make it appear as a halo around her in reference to Mary. These people make so many subtle references in their videos. Great reaction as well Viking! and the my ringtone in the wife's phone Is this very song.
To me, the main emotion of this song is tenderness. The song is filled with heart-felt compassion for the woman who is (perhaps) an aspect of a god and definitely the mother of a god, but who is still a woman with a helpless brand-new baby. Note that the lighting several times haloes Kirstin from the back, giving the effect of the classical portrait of the Madonna. People often categorize Mitch as a countertenor, which comes as close as any other classification. A reviewer of one of their live performances called him a male alto, and that works to some extent as well. If you listen to Amazing Grace, you will hear him sing very powerfully in a conventional tenor range, and you will see why I am reluctant to pin him to a category! In Amazing Grace, Kevin also has a lovely solo, and he is a huge part of the their cover of John Lennon's Imagine, which I also recommend. The members from top to bottom ranges: Kirstin Maldonado - mezzo-soprano (later on, calls herself an alto, but is still the one who most often covers soprano) Mitch Grassi - tenor/countertenor Kevin Olusola - beatboxing/tenor, also plays cello in a number of their songs (notably: Radioactive, Say Something, Shallow) Scott Hoying - baritone, but often sings tenor (because Mitch often sings alto) - the tall blond guy Avi Kaplan - bass, vocal bass (that is, a voice acting as a string or electronic bass) --> Avi departed for personal reasons in 2)17 and has been replaced by Matt Sallee. To hear Matt highlighted, good choices are Sounds of Silence, Mr, Grinch, 90s Dance Medley Subscribed for more Pentatonix!
I think the word you're looking for is "AWE" but I feel the term "reverent awe" describes all of their emotions in this video. This is one of their greatest abilities - to emote feelings with their whole being! It's one of the reasons just about everyone who reacts to their videos has become addicted to "goosebumps "! I love your heartfelt reactions - everytime you showed goosebumps you triggered them in me.
@@VikingReacts Scott Suplexed wasn’t a suggestion. Sorry I wasn’t clear! You asked what the equivalent of a Mitch Slap was for Scott and I was answering with a phrase I’d heard someone else use. 🙂
Bro...BRO... if you still feel like a Christmas song is cool... You gotta hear what they do to OH come all ye faithful.... a Christmas song that you dance too... seriously....
Thx for a great reaction. Ptx blow my mind ... over and over and over again. They have the ability to transcend the petty differences that keep people apart so often: race, age, religion, preferred music genre, LGBTQ+, etc etc! As you experienced, they give me goosebumps on my goosebumps consistently - no matter how many times I hear them sing the same song. They truly are a gift to the world. I would love to hear them tackle something heavy metal. Can you imagine? That would be AWESOME.
Scott Hoying, the tall blonde, describes himself as a baritone but actually sings bass to tenor. He covers bass parts brilliantly as needed. Great reaction, thanks! Edit: To hear Scott at his best (and the rest of them too!) please react to The Prayer.
Taking nothing away from the greatness of Pentatonix on this, for another great version try Home Free. Also check Home Free's BRILLIANT arrangement of Do YOu Hear What I Hear. Thanks for the reaction. Dave here
The location was picked for its sound. I have watched this video many times but never thought about the “cave” part of symbolism and lighting. It is the cave from Batman.
This song is insanely special to me--it was my grandma's and my mom's favorite song and then became my favorite song. We played it at both their funerals and I even had it at my wedding which was in the fall in remembrance for my grandma (my mom hadn't passed yet). This is the ONLY version I will listen to because no others compare, aside from a family friend who performs this at church acoustically and he's the one who did the song for the funerals and wedding. A month before my mom passed unexpectedly, we went to our first PTX concert. I am loving your reactions!!
Thank you for sharing your personal connection to the song! It is exactly this what makes each of these songs special to us. And we all have a different reason/meaning. Beautiful! Hold on to those memories! And of course… thank you for the compliment!
This was the first song I heard from PTX and it hit me like a rock, I've been obsessed ever since. I usually listen Nightwish and Blind Channel... Greetings from Finland!
Loving your reactions!! There are so many to choose from with PTX!! To start with and for a variety: Love Again (original), Amazing Grace, Mad World, Can’t Hold Us, Evolution of Michael Jackson and Joyful Joyful (live from Evergreen Experience) 👏🏻🔥😊
This is too short, as is always the case with PTX! When it comes to PTX, one hour songs would be perfect for me. Perfect setting, perfect arrangement, great vocals all around and I saw you were KOd by Kevin!
This song hooked me on pentatonix when I first heard it years ago. Had to listen to it about 10 times in a row. In your defense , I didn't know Mitch was the high part when just listening to the CD before seeing any video to see who sang which part. They still make the best Christmas albums on earth. All I know is if they cover someone's song, they might be claiming the title to it for good. I will note voiceplay makes the best Halloween songs though. Also, they just released the best metal acapella cover with Metallica's Nothing Else Matters.
Amazing song from PTX and another great performance by Avi. Yes you get Mitch slapped And an Avi-lanched. Please try reacting to some of Avi's solo music. Change on the Rise, All is well 7 layer sessions, b/w video of I'm only getting started and When I'm a Fool live at Sunset Sound. It's a jam. I'm subscribing for both of these artists so keep them coming please.
So far we have Mitch-slapped for Mitch, KOd for Kevin (his initials are KO), and Avi-lanched for Avi. I haven't seen ones for Kirstie, Scott, or Matt yet. I did see where someone in trying to explain how to pronounce her name used thirsty. Maybe there's something about "thirsty for Kirstie", but that seems like sexualizing the one female in the group when you don't do that for any of the guys, and that is somewhat misogynistic. Maybe there's something like "Great Scott I been floored." For Matt maybe you could say you've been "taken to the mat". Just some suggestions, but maybe people can improve on these from the top of my head.
People forget....every instrument.....every scale...... every note .......mimics the human voice. There is no purer music.
I love it when Kevin sings and people are just like “THEIR PERCUSSIONIST CAN SING TOO?????”
I am not a religious person, but this gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it.
My favourite song by this group such lovely words
It's the way they sing. They have the talent to bring you into the song and make you feel it step by step, word by word. They bring it to life.

So far… one of the best Pentatonix songs I’ve heard. So much more to come and enjoy. I’m sure of it!
Yes, i enjoyed your reaction.
Thank you.
Anointed voices❤
Mitch is a counter tenor with a 7 octave range. Scott is a baritone and fills in on bass for Avi.
The members from top to bottom ranges:
Kirstin Maldonado - mezzo-soprano (later on, calls herself an alto, but is still the one who most often covers soprano)
Mitch Grassi - tenor/countertenor
Kevin Olusola - beatboxing/tenor, also plays cello in a number of their songs (notably: Radioactive, Say Something, Shallow)
Scott Hoying - baritone, but often sings tenor (because Mitch often sings alto) - the tall blond guy
Avi Kaplan - bass, vocal bass (that is, a voice acting as a string or electronic bass)
--> Avi departed for personal reasons in 2)17 and has been replaced by Matt Sallee. To hear Matt highlighted, good choices are Sounds of Silence, Mr, Grinch, 90s Dance Medley
Subscribed for more Pentatonix!
This song never fails to give me chills. Glad you loved it! I’ve heard someone say Scott Suplexed before, so perhaps that?
Yup, even during editting... The goosebumps kept coming :). And maybe... I am creating a list with all suggestions. I'll put it on it.
@@VikingReacts Scott Suplexed wasn’t a suggestion. Sorry I wasn’t clear! You asked what the equivalent of a Mitch Slap was for Scott and I was answering with a phrase I’d heard someone else use. 🙂
@@Jennyknight1229 I’ve heard ButterScott… kinda like that one
@@VikingReacts Another reactor I watch says Scot Suplex, Kirstie Kicked, KO's by KO, Matt Slammed, Mitch Slapped, Avi-lanched..lol
They liked this and so pleased you enjoyed it. Can’t wait for you to check out there upgrade of the prayer you will be blown away
Bro...BRO... if you still feel like a Christmas song is cool...
You gotta hear what they do to OH come all ye faithful.... a Christmas song that you dance too... seriously....
Mitch really gives great vocals.. The Great I AM !!
Another of my very, very favorites!
I love your reactions to Pentatonix. They have hundreds of songs so I will love seeing you react to more of them
They touch deep into your soul.
It is the cave from Batman.
....the great I Am. Goosebumps. It's almost enough to make you believe in v the divinity of the human spirit.
I get goosebumps with almost every song they sing,❤
Loving your reactions!! There are so many to choose from with PTX!! To start with and for a variety: Love Again (original), Amazing Grace, Mad World, Can’t Hold Us, Evolution of Michael Jackson and Joyful Joyful (live from Evergreen Experience) 👏🏻🔥😊
Awesome reaction. Thanks for doing it! I've subscribed.
I think this is my favorite Pentatonix song
This is too short, as is always the case with PTX! When it comes to PTX, one hour songs would be perfect for me. Perfect setting, perfect arrangement, great vocals all around and I saw you were KOd by Kevin!
The setting is in the Batcave" from the movie.
❤❤❤chills of JOY!!!!!!
This cover is absolutely amazing. I also highly suggest Tommee Profitt & Jordan Smith's version. Absolutely phenomenal 😍
Loved your take on Mitch - his "honest" voice. Lovely description.
I know they give me goosebumps too
One of my favourites, Thank you ❤
