As a 70-year-old, to hear you say, "Disturbed's 'Sound of Silence'," broke my heart a little. I'm sure someone has already noted that the original was written by Paul Simon and released by Simon and Garfunkle in 1964, one of the major hits from this era and still just as popular today, as evidenced by these modern covers. It was the soundtrack for much of my pre-teen to mid-20s.

I feel all hold a message in their version of the song
      1. Simon & Garfunkle: Warning
      2. Disturbed: Anger and this is the result of not heeding the warning
      3. Pentatonix: possible hope if we come together

I understand why songs popular two generations ago are somewhat lost in the mists of time to the current reactors, and give them slack considering how much music has been produced over the last sixty years. I'm just glad so many of them are discovering the music that existed before rap came on the scene.

Kevin Olusola(KO) is the beatboxer. It is suspected he swallowed an entire drum set ! Immensely talented. World class cello, saxophone artist, he appeared twice at Carnegie Hall as a teenager. He also has a beautiful tenor voice when he does sing. He speaks several languages, including Mandarin. Oh yeah, he graduated pre-med from Yale ! He has his own You Tube channel which is mind blowing. Check it out.

"Sound of Silence" was originally sung by Simon and Garfunkel, an American folk rock duo in the 1960s. It was written by Paul Simon, and they first released it in January, 1966. In the nearly 60 years since then, it has been covered by numerous bands and singers, including, as you know, both Disturbed and #Pentatonix. Disturbed released their cover first; in many ways Pentatonix's version is a response to Disturbed.
There has been much speculation about the meaning of "Sound of Silence." Because it was released shortly after President Kennedy's assassination, many people thought it was about that. Some people think that Paul Simon foresaw the internet. Some people think it's set in the aftermath of a global catastrophe, either nuclear war or climate change; this is apparently the view of Disturbed. But Paul Simon did talk about this, and here's what he had to say:
"…we have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate."
However, since so many people hear the song as a warning of planetary disaster, the best version comparison I've heard goes like this: Simon and Garfunkel warned us. Disturbed is angry that we didn't heed the warning. And Pentatonix says that it isn't too late - we can still save the planet if we're willing to make the effort.
Is Pentatonix right? I don't know. But I'm CERTAIN that if we just give up we lose, so I'm with Pentatonix on this one. If they're wrong and it's already too late, at least we'll go down fighting for our planet, and that beats the heck out of the only other option I see, writing an angry suicide note.

The members of #Pentatonix. In this song:
    • First verse, tall blond guy: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. In describing a man's vocal range, "lyric" means that the actual range exceeds the nominal range. In Scott's case, he sings everywhere from about the middle of a normal bass range through a normal tenor range, with an excellent falsetto on top. In live performances Scott typically takes over the bass harmony line when their bass has a solo.
    • Second verse, dark haired guy next to Scott: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves, but he's most comfortable in his higher registers. He switches between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice seamlessly, and is known for his ethereal high solos. Everyone in Pentatonix says he has the best voice of any of them.
    • Third verse, black guy in a white jacket on the far left: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a a recent live performance, though you may want to watch their official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear what it sounded like with their original bass, Avi Kaplan, who left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons. You can find the recording with Matt here: ua-cam.com/video/Se0BmDdZuX0/v-deo.html Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, which is fantastic. His lowest notes don't blow out speakers the way Avi's have done (though they may within a year or two), but on the high end his falsetto can match Kevin's.
    • Fourth verse, the only woman in Pentatonix: Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, alto and soprano. Kirstin sings anywhere from a low alto (though not contralto, which is the female equivalent of baritone) through coloratura soprano, the highest female range. And she has whistle notes on top of that which are off the charts. Lately Pentatonix has begun referring to her as an "alto soprano."
    • The fifth member of Pentatonix is the black guy on the right: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on the cello and once on the saxophone. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place.
Matt joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it), after their original bass left the group for personal reasons in 2017; he has now been with Pentatonix longer than their original bass was. Which brings us to the one member of Pentatonix who doesn't appear in this video:
    • Bearded white guy who usually wore a beanie or stocking cap: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances - but his range extends upward to about the middle of the tenor range. Since leaving Pentatonix Avi has gone on to have an extremely successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his UA-cam channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
The appearance of Mitch and Kirstin tends to vary greatly from one video to another, so people will frequently think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Kirstin or Mitch. With these two, go by their voices, not their appearance; their voices don't lie. To be clear: Avi is the ONLY member who's left Pentatonix and Matt is the ONLY member who joined later.
Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin are childhood friends from Arlington, Texas, and in high school they formed a trio which they unimaginatively named "The Trio." They performed frequently at school functions and occasionally on local television. For this reason, pentaholics (Pentatonix fans) still refer to them as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix.

His beatboxing is amazing, and he also is very creative with body percussion, (See "Making of Evergreen")Matt replaced Avi in 2017, and has added a joyful energy and a style and talent that really suits the group beautifully. Avi has some great solo stuff, now. I enjoyed your reaction. I'm gonna be honest, I'm a Pentaholic, but I actually don't love that fandom name. As others have noted, the original was from the 60's by Simon & Garfunkel. I loved their original version and love both covers by Disturbed and Pentatonix for different reasons. I think Disturbed's version (powered by David Draiman's epic vocals) captures the darkness of the lyrics better than any version I've heard, and with Pentatonix you get the incredible harmonies of all these great voices coming together. You should definitely check out the S&G original to see where it all started.

  • @Gwennedd
    @Gwennedd 2 місяці тому +9

The original was by Simon and Garfunkel in the mid 1960's, Disturbed's piece is just a cover. It's said that S&G's original was a warning, Disturbed version was angry that the warning hadn't been heeded and PTX's version is about hope that the warning will be taken to heart.
We call ourselves Pentaholics. We are addicted to this group.
Avi left for personal reasons in 2017.His mom had cancer and the stress of flying home frequently and the pace of recording , touring and practice was more than he could take. He now has a growing solo career going...and his mom is fine now. Matt Sallee joined in early 2018 after being a big fan for years and winning the contest for the new bass. He's a great addition to the group, fits right in and he and Kevin, the beatboxer, are an awesome team!
Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer. One of the best in the world. He not only beatboxes but sings backing vocals when not actively beatboxing, plays cello, sax and keyboard. He has his own YT channel: KO Kevin Olusola, where he combines and loops keyboard, singing, cello and beatboxing. Kevin has a really sweet tenor voice. he invented celloboxing...his ability to play cello while beatboxing.
Some PTX pieces with Kevin playing the cello while beatboxing: Radioactive, Shallow, Say Something, Over The River, Papaoutai, Perfect.

Pentatonix has talent beyond measure and seemingly a pattern to their arrangements...they create a wall of sound..build tension and bring a release to cover us in waves of harmony and tingles in the back of our heads, hearts and spines...so thoroughly saturated in layers of talent...the 3 in the middle have a history of shared church/choir singing that peaks through their style...

Yes, Kevin is a phenomenal beatboxer.
Because #Pentatonix tours so much they have to take what most of us would consider extreme measures to take care of their voices. One of those measures is staying hydrated. I know, that isn't extreme, *everyone* should stay hydrated. Except if you're part of Pentatonix "staying hydrated" means "drinking water almost constantly." They keep water bottles scattered all over the stage during concerts so they can sneak a sip whenever they need to. And all of this sipping means they also swallow a lot of air, which leads to burping, which is a real problem in the middle of a concert.
Well, I saw an interview where Kevin said he got tired of trying to burp quietly and hope no one noticed, so he figured out ways to incorporate *burping* into his beatboxing! (Kirstin shot him a dirty look.) I haven't heard that from any other beatboxer.
I've heard reactors who think that Kevin must have a real drum track running, that he's just lip-synching. This is *false.* But I've noticed something about these claims: they're only made on videos with Matt, never Avi.
Avi's voice is spectacular; *everyone* loves it. But there's nothing subtle about his bass. If there's a song with Mitch soloing in his most ethereal, angelic voice and Avi's bass line starts up, everyone swoons and says "Oh! That bass!" and that's all they listen to for the rest of Mitch's gorgeous solo. You *always* notice Avi's bass. Matt, however, uses only the volume that's necessary to do the job. When Matt isn't soloing but the camera shows the whole band, watch Matt's lips while listening to Kevin's percussion. The timing is identical. It almost looks like Matt is beatboxing.
The rhythm section has two parts: percussion and bass. In most bands that means a drummer and a bass guitarist. In Pentatonix it means Kevin and either Matt or Avi. One of the reason Kevin's "drums" sound so full, so *real,* is that Matt is supplying the perfect bass notes to complete the sound. And he does it so discretely that you don't hear it as a bass voice singing; you just hear those perfect drums.

    • @Gwennedd
      @Gwennedd 2 місяці тому +2

I have noticed that Matt is totally in sync with Kevin's beats. And yeah...if you didn't know Matt was the bass, you'd think he was the beatboxer. Those two a phenomenal together.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 2 місяці тому +2

@@Gwennedd I'm sure you've heard "The Lucky Ones"? Well, Scott was right when he wrote that; Pentatonix *has* been lucky, just not the way Scott meant. Yes, there was a certain amount of luck involved in their success after Epic dropped their contract, but mostly it was a combination of talent, hard work, and sheer stubbornness on their part. Where Pentatonix has been truly lucky is in finding the right people.
How much luck was involved in Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin all being born in the same small Texas town within a year or so of one another? The odds seem to be astronomical against that happening. And then Scott just happened to meet Ben Bram? And Ben just happened to know Avi? And Kevin had just happened to post his celloboxing video to UA-cam? And was willing to give up his spot at Yale Medical School to join three teenagers and a bass on a television talent show? And *didn't* say, "That's it! I can still become a doctor!" after Epic reneged on the contract? (Okay, that last one is also character, but Pentatonix had the luck to find a beatboxer who would never betray his friends.)
Pentatonix has had remarkable luck when it comes to personnel, and nowhere is that luck more obvious than in their selection of Matt when they needed a new bass. The facts that he already adored Pentatonix, that he'd recently graduated from Berklee School of Music and hadn't yet found another position, and that Ben Bram knew about him all worked in their favor, and Matt is truly the perfect person for his job; he fits right in with all the other talented people who make up Pentatonix.
Some reactors ask "Who's your favorite member of Pentatonix?" and I always say "Whichever one is soloing right now," but that isn't entirely accurate. It's more accurate to say, "Whichever one I'm concentrating on at the moment," which in Matt's case frequently means times when I can't even distinguish his voice, because I know what that means; it means he's part of Kevin's invisible drum kit.

This video was Matt's first introduction after he had been with the group on tour. He had to wait until contract renewal to OFFICIALLY join Pentaholics. That is why he has a white coat while the rest of the band were in darker wardrobe.
Avi Kaplan was with PTX 2011-2017 and Matt was a fan before he joined in 2017--present. He has been with PTX longer than Avi.
Personal note: Kevin, Matt, Scott, and Kirstin are all married now and each member has been at the weddings. It Is all on UA-cam and TicTox. Guess who has a baby daughter ..... there is more than one.

Actually Matt had officially been part of the group for about a year when this video was released - he signed the contracts in early 2018, and this video was released in early 2019. There are a number of official videos with Matt that were released before SoS - Havana, Attention, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Evolution of Rihanna to name some. I would consider Deck the Halls to be Matt's introduction in an official video, since that video was released in late 2017, before he could officially join the group.

Note: Kevin stomps in the video because he would be stomping on a sound pad while performing live. I love how they show the full movements needed to produce all the sounds they do live.

    Subscribed.
If you decide to continue down this rabbit hole you can expect a LOT of new subscriptions; #Pentatonix fans are enthusiastic about reaction videos to anything our favorite band puts out.
    Some useful terminology:
    • pentaholic = Pentatonix fan
    • PTX = abbreviation for Pentatonix - extremely useful in searches
    • the trio = Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott
    • Mitch slap = what you get the first time you realize how incredible Mitch's voice is.
    • Avi-lanche = like a Mitch slap, except with Avi instead of Mitch.
    • KO = like a Mitch slap or Avi-lanche, except with Kevin Olusola.
    • Matt attack = like a Mitch slap, Avi-lanche, or KO, except with Matt.
    • Great Scott! (or ButterScott) = like a Mitch slap, Avi-lanche, KO, or Matt attack, except with Scott.
    • Unfortunately, we haven't been able to come up with a good name for what Kirstin does to us. 😔
(Note: You never become immune to Mitch slaps, Avi-lanches, KOs, Matt attacks, Great Scotts, or the similar things that Kirstin does. They always have the ability to surprise us.)
You can't go wrong listening to anything Pentatonix has released; it's all gorgeous. But all pentaholics have our own personal favorites that we like to recommend. These are some of my favorites:
    • "Hallelujah" (the official video, with Avi)
    • "Hallelujah" ( a recent live performance, with Matt and a new arrangement: ua-cam.com/video/Se0BmDdZuX0/v-deo.html )
    • "Imagine" (the official video)
    • "The Prayer"
    • "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin)
    • "Happy Now" (another original)
    • "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner)
    • "O Come All Ye Faithful"
    • "O Holy Night" (they did a totally new recording for their 2023 Christmas album; you can find the official video here: ua-cam.com/video/ReJAU2mXm8w/v-deo.htmlsi=upj2Q3vLqigVEtgm )
    • "Pure Imagination / Christmas Time is Here" (preferably the live Vevo recording)
    • "Kiss From a Rose" (preferably the live Vevo recording - both of the Vevo recordings are available on UA-cam)
    • "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch"
    • "The Lucky Ones" (an original, written by Scott)
    • "Thank You" (an original, written by Scott and his then fiancé, now husband, Mark Manio Hoying, shortly after the end of COVID lockdown, about how much easier it was to get through that time because they were together)
    • "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth." This is a live feed from a concert they gave in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town: ua-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/v-deo.html and this is the very special performance of "Kevin's Fifth" (without "The Kevin Show") from Kevin's birthday in 2022: ua-cam.com/video/7m0g7xThIWs/v-deo.htmlsi=99F7iG5qkdgPCm43
Additionally, IF you're familiar with _"The Wizard Of Oz"_ (the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland), I recommend "Todrick Hall - The Wizard of Ahhhs (ft. Pentatonix)": ua-cam.com/video/QkVeKb2igrg/v-deo.html If you've never seen the movie it won't make sense, so take care of that first. One advantage to reacting to "The Wizard of Ahhhs" is that you won't need to obscure the video to avoid copyright claims. Most of Pentatonix's copyrights are owned by their publisher, RCA, and RCA is notorious for getting reaction videos taken down over copyright issues, but the copyrights for "The Wizard of Ahhhs" are owned by Todrick Hall, and Todrick seems to be more interested in good publicity than in stomping on innocent reactors. (I regret to say that Todrick has gotten a lot of bad publicity in recent years, for very good reasons; he appears to be something of a jerk. But making copyright claims against other UA-camrs isn't one of his vices.)

EVERYTHING by Pentatonix is awesome... you should look at Gold, it's a cover of a song by Kiara and a great example of theii vocal prowess. They also have an original, written by them, called Sing. It's amazing! Would love tosee some reactions to those.

The choir, by the way, are Slovenian - just so you know, Slovenia was formerly part of Yugoslavia, and dominated by the iron yoke of Communism.
