Okay, if you listen closely, the whole song is actually a flashback. The first line "It was long ago and it was far away and it was so much better than it is today". Basically, it's an old, married couple, flashing back to their first time, after the high school dance, parked by the lake, and not another car in sight. And he can see "Paradise" by the dashboard lights, but just as he is about to slide into home, she pulls the emergency brake. No ding-ding without a wedding ring. Finally, he caves in and swears his undying love. Flash forward, back to the present, and here's that same couple after who knows how many years of marriage, suffering "buyers remorse", but neither one willing to break the vows they made that night. And, yes, if you watch, she wants out as bad as he does. Watch it again and pay close attention to the words. FYI The whole baseball game in the background, in the 50s, 60, 70s (maybe 80s too) guy code for how your date went was baseball - 1st base, kissing, maybe some outside the clothes groping, 2nd base everything above the waist, 3rd base everything except . . ., Home Run rather self-explanatory. Most people under 40 don't get that reference.
Baseball terms were used in the same way in the UK too, in the 80's - I'm assuming you're referencing the US, so I apologise if you're not. I was born in '74 and Meatloaf was one of my fave singers during my teen years, along with Queen, Guns 'n Roses, Cher, and Aerosmith. I used to dress up to look older so I could attend a local pub's weekly heavy metal nights to "head bang" to rock music. I usually left with a headache and a mess of tangled hair, but it was so much fun! ❤

When his daughter was in high school in Redding, Connecticut, she was a softball player. One year, the JV team couldn’t come up with a coach; he agreed to do the job. His focus was totally on the team and the girls. He would never sign autographs until games were over and was known to extend practices if reporters showed up, just to make them wait. He only did it one year, but how many other performers would have even thought about doing that.
The announcer was Phil Rizzuto. "Rizzuto frequently claimed not to have understood the innuendo behind his part in a song about teenage lovers and a parked car." “Phil was no dummy -- he knew exactly what was going on, and he told me such,” Meat Loaf told ESPN in 2007. “He was just getting some heat from a priest and felt like he had to do something. "And now i'm praying for the end of time, so hurry up and arrive. Cause if i gotta spend another minute with you i don't think I could really survive." Laughed the first time I played this at the radio station in 1994!
I've had to point out to people that BOTH of them are praying for the end of time. Most people think it's just Meatloaf "saying" that. When you see both of them pointing at each other in concert, it highlights the sad point that both characters feel this way and both regret it.

This album is sometimes called rock opera because of the epic story telling and music. You should react to Bat out of He'll next. It has a crazy mimic of a motorcycle sound on the guitar.
RIP Meatloaf. I am lucky to have been a teenager during this time. He was the GOD of rock opera. He always tells a story of teenagers in the 70's and 80's. You should watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show. He was the motorcycle rider...... Patti Russo has an awesome voice and they work so well together, no they were not a couple just very theatric and I love it!!!
Meatloaf was the ultimate performer!! Many times he would leave the stage and calapse, often times having to be taken to the hospital!! He gave every ounce every time!💪
This is an all time classic. It's true for many, especially back then, and so comical. The female is Karla Devito, just a fellow singer. She married 70s and 80s actor Robby Benson, and still married over 40 yrs later. Joe Rogan has said he had a major crush on her when he was younger from this video.
And, that's not her voice, he recorded this with Ellen Foley, (she was a singer and also starred for a time on Night Court) he recorded the video with Karla but with Ellen's voice.
@@whatnext715Well the song was recorded before the video and then Karla did the tour instead of Ellen. Idk if Ellen and Meat were a couple and broke up or if Ellen was just too busy with other projects but Karla did the tour for the album and the video but not the vocal recording on the record.
@@jacqueline4514 He was the voice of The Beast in the Disney cartoon Beauty And The Beast, he was Billy Joe in Ode To Billy Joe, and Richie in The Death Of Richie.
Your face, just after the pause and she asked “Will you love me forever …” was ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS!!!! Clearly you were thinking: 1. I’m going to really enjoy this 2. I really really want to see what this brother has to say 😅!!!!! 😂😂
This is concert footage with Karla DeVito. However the sound quality of the recording was bad so they put the album version over the top of it. The lady on the album version of Ellen Foley, an actress who played on Night Court back in the eighties.
While Karla did the tour this isn't concert filmed. This was done on a closed set sound stage (no live audience) just for the video. I call the basic premise of this song Hormonal Blackmail.
Meatloaf came from musical theater.he was in the original Rocky horror picture show .his voice was sooo underrated by many ,appreciated by us who know our rock vocalist.. Great artist
I’m 67 so I musta been a teenager when this video aired. No MTV or other full time music station in those days. Our hometown had 2 radio stations and one was a country and western the other station played the rest, pop, rock, r&b, top 10 stuff. Being a teen starving for musical input anything live on TV was appreciated. And funny thing the whole family usually teens, moms, dads, grandparents, gran kids all watched shows together. Well you can bet, living in a catholic household, the entire family was stunned. Music and video were such luxuries back then. I couldn’t understand the entire song it was a lot to take in and I only had a tiny confused teenage brain to digest what I was watching. Those days 1 song could change culture since the musical pipelines where so small entire families like I said watched entertainment together. Today I know hardly 1 new artist or top 10 anything song. Music united and brought everyone together. Today music seems to be the divider of peoples. Sorry about the rant. I enjoy your content and I just wanted you to know how it was. Oh and the video left the whole household speechless. Those days were the musical turning points of us and our country and the world. Out!
The beautiful singer in this video is the great Karla Devito who has been married to actor Robby Benson for many years. Karla toured with Meat Loaf performing Paradise live but the studio vocal which is what you hear in this clip was sung by the tremendous singer Ellen Foley. Meatloaf and songwriter Jim Steinman were from the musical theater area so this clip is great musical theater singing and acting by Meat and Karla.
Jim Steinman referred to his music as "Wagnerian Rock" because both he and Meat were deeply theatrical and it was very well reflected in the songs that he wrote. Steinman is known mostly for his Meat Loaf songs, but he scored huge hits with Air Supply, Bonnie Tyler, Barry Mannilow, Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion as well as one hit as a solo-artist!
Karla Devito is the name you're searching for. Meatloaf got his start on Broadway as did Karla. Think of the song as a mini Broadway production. Most of the kissing scenes in his songs over the decades were acting. Jim Steinman wrote this song as well as the entire Bat out of Hell album. He also wrote i would do Anything. Steinman also hot his start on Broadway. When you saw a Meatloaf show you saw about 20 mini Broadway musicals. You really didn't need to see his duets with Patricia Russo.
the voice you are hearing is Ellen Foley, the girl you are looking at is Karla Devito....she toured with him and was in this filming. but the voice you are hearing in this video is from the album
Karla and Ellen are both on Meatloafs last album Braver than we Were. They all sing together on the song Going all the Way. The album is another Steinman masterpiece @@zenchowbuddha
I'm at my first break of yours, and I'm cracking up 😂 So I finished, and I really needed the laugh. The look on your face was priceless. Don't get me wrong, Two Out Three Ain't Bad, is one of my favorites of his. Great reaction.
I saw him 3 times live and Meatloaf was one of the best showmen. His stage show and music were just phenomenal!!! That is Karla DeVito in the video she was lip synching, it is Ellen Foley voice, who also played on Night Court, sang the song on the album.
Bat Out of Hell - one of the top 10 albums in all of history!! Meatloaf was a true performer! Theatrical, fantastic singer, actor.... You name it and he could do it!
I remember reading a comment regarding this song, which I never realized. Meat Loaf is wearing a shirt that guys wore for prom, so this could of been prom night. So the start of the song they are young, get married and can’t stand each other at the end. Circle. Funny to me.
I always found this song absolutely hilarious and really good. I was 17 when it was released. The video is of a live performance but the audio is from the album version synced to the video. The woman in the video is Karla DeVito who toured with Meatloaf, replacing Ellen Foley who actually sang on the album but didn't want to go on tour.
Meatloaf was amazing live. I saw him in San Antonio sometime early in 1978, touring in support for this album. He was headliner and only act. The show opened with a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Then Meat came out and seriously rocked the house! I had the album both on vinyl and 8-track in the car, and legally write them both out, then replaced with cassette, then later on CD.
Meat started out as a music theatre performer so he was trained to be theatrical in style. He never thought of himself as a singer but as an actor who could sing. He was presenting the whole performance, not just the song part. Critics absolutely scorched him but none of the fans cared. Everyone responded to his authenticity and passion.
You'll also want to watch his productions of this with Patricia Russo. She is considered his best duet partner. You'll definitely want to see Dead Ringer for Love. I'll let you be absolutely shocked by the duet partner. This song is written as a past memory when the couple is older. Notice in the beginning he says "I remember it like it was yesterday" and then the refrain from both of them "it was long ago and far away. They also say they'll never break their vows
It was the fabulous 80’s I was in my 20’s now I am 71 years old and still love our generation of music! So happy you kids get to enjoy some of the best music ever created.
When I saw you listening to Ren, I knew you would enjoy this. I believe I even commented this once. Meatloaf was a actor musician like Ren. Each song has it's own character and Meatloaf would pace around the stage and create a unique action that would prep him for the song he was about to sing.
Jim Steinman wrote the songs for the album. Meat Loaf was an actor who sang and that's why his videos are so fun to watch. and why his concerts were so much fun to see. Steinman wrote for Meat Loaf's big voice. Steinman also wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart" but didn't offer it to Meat Loaf which caused a rift between them when Bonnie Tyler had such a big hit with the song. Ellen Foley sang on the album but didn't want to tour because she was working on her own career. Ellen was also an actor who sang. That is Ellen Foley's voice heard in the video, but Karla DeVito is seen in the video. She sang the part on tour, but the live recording didn't work out so they dubbed the studio recording over it. Later Patti Russo toured with Meat Loaf and sang the part.
I was a 17 year old newlywed when this came out. I remember my next door neighbor playing it, then we had to get the album. We still have it on cd and play it a lot.
At the end of the song they have been together (married) for some time and are both ready to call it quits because they can't stand each other any more! Happens often in marriage.
This guy is one of the best. I saw him live. So so good! He is a great singer and showman. You get your moneys worth. Sadly he passed away a few years ago from Covid. He play'd in parts in movies in the 80's. Wen he passed, I swear it got me to tears. Loved this guy! it was in the news and letters came pouring in of love for him. This song and show he put on with it is one of the greatest.
Congratulations you have been through your first pocket opera as we used to call it. Songs that tell a story like an opera but real quick. Now picture this as the next to last song played at your senior prom. Those were the days, that’s for sure.
I saw Meatloaf in concert in 1994 in the pouring rain. It was an amazing concert and by the end of the concert the rain had stopped. The best part of the concert was the 20 minute version of this song! His daughter Pearl was one of his back up singers during the concert tour. The original woman singing the replies was Ellen Foley who was on the first season of the original Night Court.

This album is sometimes called rock opera because of the epic story telling and music. You should react to Bat out of He'll next. It has a crazy mimic of a motorcycle sound on the guitar.
The entire album from start to finish is a rock opera.
@juliagrant3299 not rock opera but theatre rock , they were all from musical theatre, the neverland express, shorty is karla Devito
One of my all time faves! Its so humorous!!!! Epic
*You took the words right out of my mouth* one of my favourite Meat Loaf songs from Bat Out of Hell.
He gave every ounce every time!💪
This is why Meatloaf is a safe word cause " I would do anything for love, but I wont do that!"
This is an all time classic. It's true for many, especially back then, and so comical. The female is Karla Devito, just a fellow singer. She married 70s and 80s actor Robby Benson, and still married over 40 yrs later. Joe Rogan has said he had a major crush on her when he was younger from this video.
Wow; I haven’t heard of Robbie Benson in so long; what a great fun fact!
And, that's not her voice, he recorded this with Ellen Foley, (she was a singer and also starred for a time on Night Court) he recorded the video with Karla but with Ellen's voice.
@@mdltlI didn’t know that. I wonder why they didn’t use Karla’s voice. I saw her on Broadway in the late 70s or early 80s and she was a powerhouse.
Clearly you were thinking:
1. I’m going to really enjoy this
Also, it is Ellen's album vocals. Karla is lip-syncing. Ellen said that she didn't want to tour and kiss Meat Loaf every night. LOL
@@mlong1958 Not doubting you, but damn that was the best lip syncing I've ever seen. Where can I find this info? I'm curious now.
@@thevicdunnband en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Foley
@@davidgray843 awesome, Thank you!
I saw this performed live. Changed the way I looked at music. This is Rock Opera at its best. RIP 🪦 Meat Loaf.
Meatloaf came from musical theater.he was in the original
Rocky horror picture show .his voice was sooo underrated by many ,appreciated by us who know our rock vocalist..
Out!
That's the fun thing about watching reactions, we know where all the good parts are.
Bat Out of Hell is the 1977 debut album by American rock singer Meat Loaf and composer Jim Steinman.
i love you reaction at 4:25... i was loughing out soooo loud
YOUR FACE WHEN THE LYRICS CHANGE TO “we’re gonna go all the way tonight” IS HILARIOUS, I AM DYING LAUGHING!!!
One of the top 5 selling LP's of all time - still
The woman singing is Ellen Foley she was on night court in the 80s playing the attorney opposite of John laroquette in the 2nd season
Laroquette
@@michelleponzio thank you I wasn't sure how to spell that right I went by memory I changed it.
This is one of your best reactions. The looks on your face are classic. Great song for this.
What a great time to live with the best music era ever. I'm 60 and will never forget these great classics
Ellen Foley also played Billie on the original Night Court.
Love me some Meatloaf
RIP Meatloaf. I was a senior when this came out. It reminds me of my group of friends from yesteryear.
I'm at my first break of yours, and I'm cracking up 😂 So I finished, and I really needed the laugh. The look on your face was priceless. Don't get me wrong, Two Out Three Ain't Bad, is one of my favorites of his. Great reaction.
You haven’t seen anything like that. No one has. This song is truly unique, a one-of-one.
I saw him 3 times live and Meatloaf was one of the best showmen. His stage show and music were just phenomenal!!! That is Karla DeVito in the video she was lip synching, it is Ellen Foley voice, who also played on Night Court, sang the song on the album.
Cannot explain how huge this song was back in the day. Just epic.
This is a cautionary tale in one long song.. meatloaf is unlike any other,, and we love him for it.
You need to check him out singing in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Agreed. Check out the whole film...there is a reason there's a cult following for Rocky Horror
Bat Out of Hell - one of the top 10 albums in all of history!! Meatloaf was a true performer! Theatrical, fantastic singer, actor.... You name it and he could do it!
We sing this song at family wedding receptions. The guys on one side of the dance floor and the females on the other. lol
I have always loved this song and Meatloaf. But their facial expressions in the video take this to another level for me.🥰🥰🥰🥰 Your face!!!!
I remember reading a comment regarding this song, which I never realized. Meat Loaf is wearing a shirt that guys wore for prom, so this could of been prom night.
So the start of the song they are young, get married and can’t stand each other at the end. Circle. Funny to me.
This song answered a lot of questions for those of us that wondered why the heck our parents ever got married in the first place. :P
Back in the hold-out-till-marriage era, many teens got married, just to have sex.
@@melissagerber7231 also lots of shotgun weddings!
Meatloaf is rock theater. Two great performances in one show. RIP Meatloaf.
His live shows were musical theater. He was good at it. He even had a role in Rocky Horror Picture Show. You should give that a watch sometime.
He attended my college. It was a world class school of music among other things, but he studied dramatic arts.
This song right here is my favorite for reactors. It goes straight off the damn rails plus it's a badass song.
"I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday..."
This was Rock Opera at its finest. Meatloaf was the first to create the Rock Opera.
This is one of the best rock opera songs and performances ever created. Hell one of the best songs as well as performances ever. Period.
Meatloaf has stated that he always considered himself to more of an actor than a singer.
I thought Bonnie Tyler sang/had a hit with Total Eclipse of the Heart???
I was a 17 year old newlywed when this came out. I remember my next door neighbor playing it, then we had to get the album. We still have it on cd and play it a lot.
Best line in the song.
“And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife”
love watching the look on peoples face when they hear this for the first time
The EXPRESSION on your face when you got it, PRICELESS! Peg 🤣
Back in the day Meatloaf was our hero, he got past second base.
Remember hearing this for the hundredth time and finally hearing and understanding the lyrics!
For real? Wait.. how old are you?
how does anyone not get it the first time lol!
@@michelleheilman9164 I was freaking 11?
@@michelleheilman9164 did you do that kinda stuff at that age?!
lol 😂 arguably one of the best reactions....your face ;)
Meatloaf had a theatre background and he used it in his performances. He was also in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, he was Eddie.
One of my favorite songs/videos- I was really young but this song is still one of my favorites! So dramatic! The bomb!
Oh come on!! 70s rock opera is so damn entertaining!!
I just love watching your reactions to songs that I grew up with.🤣
