Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is a song written by Jim Steinman. It was released in 1977 on the album Bat Out of Hell, with vocals by the American musician Meat Loaf alongside Ellen Foley. An uncommonly long song for a single, it has become a staple of classic rock radio[3][4] and has been described as the "greatest rock duet".

Paradise by the Dashboard Light" was one of seven songs developed for Bat Out of Hell, with the first three songs having originated from Steinman's Peter Pan-based rock musical, Neverland.[6][7][8] Steinman, Meat Loaf, and Ellen Foley (who had been cast as Wendy in Neverland) had all worked together on the National Lampoon Road Tour,[9] where the singers had a history of performing over-the-top musical comedy sketches together.[10]

Finally a reaction video where the host actually understands what was going on in the song, they were singing about what goes on in a seventeen years old boys mind and a girls mind when faced with what they are about to do.
The 60s and 70s teens I think get this song much faster. We parked out at as Fonzie said Inspiration Point.
With this and all meatloaf songs the fact they had the lyrics pulled up really helps the reactors follow the story, when I heard it at 18 when it came out I knew exactly what it meant.
And so many don’t get the “bases” references! smh. Oh I remember those Danskin-type things like Karla’s wearing!
To me, this was a warning video. To pay attention to your body and do not let hormones direct your life. See how fast it fell apart. Not saying the path followed was wrong, it just always tends to produce less than adequate beginnings to a positive long time relationship. I was a teenager in the sixties and certainly followed my hormones but never created the anguish portrayed here. Loved it. 👏👏👍
I watched this video in real-time when it came out 30-40 years ago. I've watched a dozen reactions to it. What EVERY reactor misses is the underlying message parents of teenagers should appreciate: Males should NOT make commitments they don't want to make just to get sex and females should NOT weaponize sex just to get commitments the male doesn't want to make. It'll NEVER turn out well.
its also a very funny song, we've all been there
@@paulhadfield7909 this 🤣
Lol it worked for me. 👍🇬🇧
They are telling a story that happened "long ago and far away", when they were barely seventeen. Then in the end of the song, they bring you to today and how they feel today, some twenty years later.
A lot of reactors seem shocked when they get to the line "and now I'm praying for the end of time" because they forget the whole song is told as a flashback. They married when they were young, possibly 17-18 and now they've been stuck together for life. I always thought the old TV show, Married With Children was a perfect companion for this song. :)
@@egk2584 I never thought of that but your exactly right....its Al and Peg....lol
A lot of people seem to miss the line "I never break my promise or forget my vow..." He may not have wanted to be in the marriage, but he never cheated on her or left her. He stayed true to his word and married her until death do they part.
Rock opera. Every girl during the 70’s knew this story.
@@allanjones1680 "I wouldn't rub your feet if a genie popped out of em."
This is the best reaction to this song I've seen.
Yes! Finally a reactor that got it!! Bravo 👏 Love it guys❤
YOU TWO ARE MY FAVOURITE COUPLE YOU HAD THE BEST REACTION TO THIS MASTER PIECE.
Probably the greatest reaction to this masterpiece! I've seen a LOT of reactions to this here on UA-cam and yours was the best lol so thank you for that and understanding and appreciating the story they were telling! I was cracking up watching you crack up and your faces as you were reacting.😂 What an amazing performer and entertainer as well as singer. They both play so well off each other in this performance! And the baseball innuendo and imagery!! Omg🤣🤣😂❤️ Loved him in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He is greatly missed, rest in peace brother ❤️🙏💔
I think the best description of Meat Loaf's face when she asks if he'll love her forever is "deer in the headlights." :)
You hit the nail right on the head Steph...thats exactly whats going on in this song....
Yes she did!!!! Everything she reacted about was SPOT ON!!!
Great reaction video! Steph that was a funny analysis! Great job by both of you! Good idea putting the lyrics to this great rock tune up there too. And yes the female singer Ellen Foley is an actress!
Delightful to see a mature couple react to this brilliant song….,thanks so much
I feel as if a part of my youth died with the passing of this wonderful entertainer and genuine human being. Marvin Lee Aday AKA Meatloaf your musical performances will live on! Thanks for the memories.
As big of a star he was a humble and regular guy. My kids and I were in Dallas for a vacation and we ran into him and a few people. My daughter was 13 at the time and she froze in he tracks and said Mr. Meatloaf? He looked at her and said " you're so young how do you know who I am?". She looked at me and I said I try to get them to listen to every type of music. He shook mine and my sons hand and kissed my daughter on the cheek. I thought I was gonna have to take her to the hospital. Lol
? I get very pissed off off people trying to profit off of the Dead but I really love meatloaf so who the f*** cares let's do this
@@chrismadden132 .so hott
???? Profiting off of the Dead that man will punch you right in the vagina

Ellen Foley did the album. I think this live performance features Karla Devito. Danny's sister.
This is the studio version, Ellen singing. It was dubbed over a rehearsal, for the video
Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell trilogy of albums is, in a word, EPIC. Jim Steinman's lyrics combined with Meatloaf's performance, along with the contributions of a host of talented musicians, adds up to a Rock-n-Roll experience not to be missed.
There was a Bat Out of Hell 3?
Jim wrote the music as well.
@@Wildwanderer99 Yes, though not all the songs were Steinmen songs.
Finally an honest reaction. From someone who understands what the song is about. Best reaction I've seen so far.❤
This song was released in 1977, but the 'story' begins about 1959-60. You can tell this from the opening lyrics: 'I remember as if it only happened yesterday.' He's giving you a back story from the past, when he and the girl were still only 17. You can also tell from the style of music; the story is told in classic early rock and roll.
'Paradise' revealed in the dark by the dashboard light is her beautiful nakedness.
Something that you may not be aware of is the baseball game has a triple meaning:
1. The baseball game is being broadcast over the car radio, so is playing in the background.
2. In the 1950s & 60s, teenaged boys and young men used baseball to help them 'last' with their dates. They would visualize a game being played or run baseball statistics to avoid being overcome by their lust.
3. Finally, the stages of lovemaking represented in baseball terms, which in this song has the game describing the boy's progress with the girl.
Just before 'sliding into home', the girl stops the fellow to make demands while he's at a 'disadvantage' and not able to think very clearly. And in 1960ish America, a girl who loses her virginity before marriage gets a reputation and likely never marries. She could also end up with a child and her family toss her out (sex education and birth control was largely unknown to 'nice' girls, and the only birth control available to the unmarried was condoms). The girl in the song is trying to secure the deal before potentially ruining her life.
On the boy's side, he's all worked up and didn't plan on getting engaged, His request to 'let me sleep on it' has two meanings:
1. He wants to put off a serious decision, maybe avoid having to commit at all; this is obvious.
2. He's still worked up and needs release, so he wants to 'sleep on IT.'
In other words, he wants her to submit and finish what they started.
His first verse is sweet, romantic, respectful, enticing.
His second verse is demanding, urgent, desperate, highly-frustrated as the urges in him get more intense.
The shorter back and forth is his losing control, until he relents and promises to love and marry her.
Then the song shifts back to the present, 18 years later in 1977. The couple are now in their mid-thirties, he honored his vow, but the nature of their marriage's beginning left it poisoned and the two will never be happy together. A cautionary tale.
A rock operetta backed up by a masterpiece of music. As great as the lyrics and vocals are, let's give a shout out to the band for an absolutely awesome job. THIS SONG ROCKS!
Meat Loaf was a vocal force
This is Rock Opera.
Meatloaf was also in
The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
What a great showman...
The story of a lot of people's love lives , ha ha. At parties we would all sing this song, taking the different parts. Best song ever !
His facial expressions of absolute horror and nervousness crack me up before he says let me sleep on it! He looks absolutely "skeered"!😂😂😂
My Mom and Meatloaf passed away last week on the same day.
I LOVE YOU MOM RIP❤😪
Sorry to hear that Ron....Stay strong brother
My deepest condolences 💐🙏🏽
I`ve watch 50 pod casters on this song , you guys are the best 1 I`ve seen
Female vocalist Ellen Foley went on to be the first blonde public defender on the 80’s classic sitcom Night Court.
The actress on stage in the video was Karla De Vito who lip synced Ellen Foley's vocal. All 3 were great...!
God Bless both of you. Such an amazing reaction to an amazing artist. Thank you, and God Bless!
I think I have watched every reaction to this song that UA-cam has to offer and I have to say, you two nailed it! Best reaction to this song that I have seen so far! Maybe because you had the lyrics on the screen whereas most don't and you really got the meaning of the song but you two were awesome! New subscriber here just so I can see more from you two! Loved it! This is the most theatrical (or at least ONE of the most theatrical) songs ever made and Meat Loaf really outdid himself with this one. One of my all time favorites lol
Best reaction to this song on UA-cam.
You're the first reactor to analyze it so well, but if you listen again you'll realize it's a couple that has been together some time and has now fallen out of love who are telling the story of that special night. At the end they are both "praying for the end of time"
"It was long ago and far away; it was so much better than it is today"
I always think this would be the perfect song for Al and Peg Bundy (Married with Children)
A lot of reactors seen to miss that she is also praying for the end of time.
I am sorry, but asking a Black couple to review Meatloaf is odd
Yall Crack me up when you figured out what was going on. Lol. Great reaction guys
My husband and I were huge fans of Meat Loaf had all his CD’s 🤩 watching the reaction videos are brilliant and funny but I love ❤️ it. They started off as 17 year olds and ended with them later in life when they couldn’t stand each other!
Finally. Someone gets the baseball reference. I've watched so many of these reactions and I'm absolutely loving the tribute to Meatloaf 🥰 I am so amazed how he continues to touch lives. Rock on Meat. Rock on.
I agree. I can't believe how few people get the relevance of the baseball scene. They must have not been knowledgeable of the bases and meaning of each. One of the verses that has always stood out to me that no one ever talks about is, "I'll never break my promise or forget my vow."
@@afterhours21711 Right? That line just kinda gets skipped over. Something admirable in it, if you ask me.
@@boomer63 a few of the other reactions I've seen they are not so much dogging him, but like he only told her he loved her to get some, and a couple of them were saying it while that verse played and missed it. Yes admirable is the perfect way to put it. It's not a song about a 17 boy telling her he loves her just for a one night stand. The first line and outro sets everything else as past tense and I think that gets missed and misunderstood alot.
@@afterhours21711 This song has so many layers. If you're not listening closely, you're bound to miss something.
This song is about young love, not a one night stand. Clearly she wouldn't have been there, parked by a lake in the backseat of a car barely dressed, asking that question if she didn't love him. She wanted it as much as he did. Thats my take on the whole situation.
Funny thing is Meatloaf did not want this song on the album as he was not happy with it....Glad they went ahead and put it on anyways hate to think we all would have missed out on this great piece of music......
So long Meat, thanks for the music and memories. I was "barely 17" when BOOH dropped and had just met my one and only. Been a fan ever since. I lost my Jim 3 years ago, after 40 years of marriage.
First of all, Jay, Steph is a keeper. A real sweety. I hope you two have a long life together. You sound like a great couple. Now, I loved your reaction. This is the best reaction to this song. I have seen many. You both actually understood the song. Lots of the younger reacting people don’t seem to hear the little details. Thank you so much.
I’ve literally watched at least 20 reactions to this song from Africa American reactors
Yours was hands down the best!!! Loved it
Subscribed due to this…love you two
The reactors are mostly too young to actually get the song until the end.
We used to use the baseball analogy in high school back in the 1960s when we told others how far we got with a girl on a date. First base was making out. Second base was getting at her breasts. The baseball announcer said that Meat Loaf slid into second base head first. Third base was feeling her up down below. A home run was full penetration. He was sliding into home plate when she said "STOP RIGHT THERE!" He honored his vow to marry her and this song was reminiscing years later about the first time they had full sex and how they feel about each other now.

I'm going to give up my age. I was DYING to have this album when it came out when I was 10 maybe? and my brother not only got it for me for Christmas but he got me the very explicit vinyl with the cover imprinted on the album.
He lost his car keys for a month but nobody was brave enough to try to take it away from me. To this day it's one of my favorites.
Just a quick note: The voice you're hearing is indeed Ellen Foley, however, that's NOT Ellen Foley in the video. That's Karla DeVito. Ellen Foley sang on the record but wouldn't go tour, so Karla replaced her for touring. That's why she's in the video and not Ellen.
Karla did a fantastic job lip synching. Most people don’t realize that she wasn’t singing. Ellen Foley’s voice was a great match for Meatloaf.
Love meatloaf ..when he performed he gave it everything he had
What a sweet couple, glad they were able to sample Meatloaf and see what he was all about
I love watching reactions to this song. When the 2nd act starts, it's always hilarious to see people crack up!
A song for every man that just wanted to get laid and the women that were taught that having sex was for marriage. Back when this song was first a hit, women only gave it up if it lead to marriage. He wanted to get his ashes hauled, she wanted a husband and a life style. Old times.
Understand your sentiment, but from what my parents said, everybody was fucking left and right in Berkeley in '67.. lol
Every girl back then wasn't on the Pill. You had fun she got stuck with your baby.
@@johnjohn37371 That is because the pill had just become available and for the first time pregnancy was not a major risk. Not so in the 50s and early 60's.
Ah, yes England in the "swinging 60's". No Vietnam for us.
But stil have PTSD from the Sex, drugs, and Rock & Roll. 😄👍🇬🇧
I have watched a number of reaction videos for this song. This was the best one I have seen. Some of the videos are kids that don't seem to get the humor in this song. I appreciated your sense of humor about it.
Meatloaf's music is often referred to as rock opera. As for the music itself he tending to mix a very wide variety into his songs. Everything from 50's bebop to some disco and rock. One of the reasons that it stands out so much in this particular song is because of how much of a mix might have been playing on the car's radio as everything was going on.
My daughter played his music all day. I'm gonna love you two forever, you two are so awesome!
Growing up with this music was gold. The best part of an early 80s youth
That was a great reaction ..... I felt so special to see your reaction to the first time hearing this song ... thanks!!
This song and this performance is what launched Ellen's career . . . . .
One of the greatest voices of ALL time.
Love, love, love your reaction. Genuine. Thanks for the video. More, please. /M.
Meatloaf had a CRAZY life. I swear to god (if you don’t believe me google his interview) he was in Dallas the day Kennedy was shot. When him and his friend heard of the shooting they started to drive to Parkland Hospital only to be stopped and a Secret Service agent commandeered their vehicle. Also Meatloaf was discovered as a singer on pure luck. He was working as a parking attendant and a friend got him to audition for a show. He did and the rest was history. The man was so talented and had amazing stories. Top record sales . Sold out Arenas but a lot of people didn’t know how success he was. I was blown away two years ago when I read over his bio and accomplishments. He was a humble treasure and will be missed. He was up their with the likes of The Beatles , Michael Jackson , Eric Clapton and other but never got as much recognition as they did.
One of the most unique and entertaining music videos of all time. Rip meatloaf.
The lady in the video was Karla Devito....however she did not sing on the album that was Ellen Foley(the voice you hear in the video), however Karla was a member of the band and did perform the song with Meatloaf on tour
Ellen couldn't tour to support the album due to previous commitments. Side note: Ellen Foley was on the first season of "Night Court".
@@gumbowski Thanks for the info Paul.... I did not know she appeared on Night Court
@@allanjones1680 she was the defense attorney before Markie Post
I absolutely love your review of this ! Great job !! Thank you !!!
Ellen Foley is best known for this duet with Meat Loaf, but she's had a long career in music and acting that continues to this day. She's recorded five solo studio albums, the most recent of which came out just last year. She's acted in numerous movies, tv shows, and stage productions. She is also a vocal teacher. She's in her early 70s now, but you'd never guess by looking at her.
@Brian Blake You forgot to mention that she played Billie Young on the first season of the classic TV show "Night Court" with Harry Anderson. BTW, they are remaking Night Court with the short girl fro Big Bang Theory as the judge.
Diane Foley was fantastic in this. Meatloaf can sing man; and she brought it hard.
LOVED LOVED LOVED watching you guys laughing during the song!!!!!!!!
Reactions to this song are as priceless as the song. RIP Meat
Outstanding you two are awesome. You understood this song perfect. Lived you reactions.
This is one of my favourite song of the Legendary Meat Loaf although i struggle to find any bad songs. RIP Big Man. Will be massively missed
The two of you are absolutely adorable. Stumbled on you by youtube recommendation. Love this song, and watching you bop along, and laughing at the pure theatricality just brought a smile to my face. Enjoy the day, and thank you.
You guys are the best. Great reaction, plus you didn't stop it every two minutes.
It's not that he was saying whatever it took to get laid, really. The lyrics give some clues to the thought process, and how it all played out.
For example, "I'll never forget my promise, or break my vows" and "It was long ago, and far away".
The beginning of song starts off with some 50's era rock'n'roll vibes, and they are singing past-tense, and Meat Loaf sings about the guys in school wishing that they were in his place, that night. So, they are looking back to being in high school, back in the 50's. She kept bugging him about it, and finally he figured, "Hell, I like her well enough, I can see her with me for the rest of my life; how bad can it be? "
This song was released in '77, so now present-tense would be 20-some odd years later.
They became an item that night, and they married straight out of high school. A couple of decades later, they're sick of each other, but are unwilling to break the promises made that night, or their wedding vows, so they pray for time to end, so that the vows are fulfilled.
Anyone married would be familiar with these rough patches. When you work through them, you come out the other side stronger and happier as a couple, usually.
Shame ol' Meat Loaf passed. I wonder if anyone ever asked him about the fate of the Paradise couple. Personally, I like to think that they worked it out, and are a happily married couple of 60+ years.
As a side note, I'm amused that the younger generations have difficulty trying to figure out what the hell "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights " means. I guess teenagers aren't driving to secluded spots for special play time, anymore.
Very cool reactions, and lady, I like that you used the words "give away my goodies".
ahhh the good ole days. I'm 52 so I can definately relate. It was so fun !
"Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife"

Yup me too, I had it on 8 track, vinyl, cassette and CD. Worn out every version. CD version is the only one I have left.
Top-notch first class ROCK-OPERA. Meatloaf and especially the fellow that represented him in the beginning had a hard time getting him recorded because nobody knew where they categorize his music they claim it was not Rock, recorded or played on the radio I can't remember now it's been so long. Anyway he finally got recorded finally got his music on the radio and his music finally took off. March 2023 thanks for this reaction one year later seeing the lyrics helps a lot to understand the song.

The album Bat Out Of Hell has sold 43 million copies - another 200,000 or so per year. Top 3 or 4 best selling of all time! He did lots of theatrical songs was in numerous movies.
Before Thriller,it was the number one selling album of all time.I think it's like #8 now.Record historians can't prove it (because of the time period.Releases in countries that didn't keep track, bootlegs, ect, ect) many contend that Pink Floyd's Dark side of the moon is number one. It's been on Billboard's top 100,47 of the 48 years since it's release

One correction to your analysis, they both sing "So now I'm praying for the end of time...." They are both fed up with one another, not just him with her.
Also, and this is something a lot of first time listeners miss, they sing "I'll never break my promise or forget my vow" so it's not like he just told her what she wanted to hear in order to get into her pants and then dumped her the next morning or something, he actually carried through and married her.... only for them both to come to regret it.
Dry good analysis of both the song and the performance. R.I.P. Meatloaf
So glad to see you guys laughing. Many reactors don't get how funny this song is, as well as being an absolute banger. Maybe it helped having the lyrics there, but great to see you laughing along at the twists.
