Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "Pretty Woman", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the Traveling Wilburys (a rock supergroup) with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "Handle With Care", "End Of The Line" etc.
This music world lost a super star when Roy Orbison passed away. His music stretched from the 60's to the 80's. There will never be another voice that can match his. RIP
One of the greatest crossover hits ever. It made the Top Ten on the Pop, Mainstream Rock, Adult Contemporary and Country charts. It’s a crying shame he didn’t live to see the public re-embrace him.
Elvis had said that he wished he could sing like Roy. Elvis and Roy were label-mates at Sun Records. Roy was able to hit those high notes to the end, he had a 3 octave vocal range. Glad you are enjoying your exploration of Roy.
Elvis can hit High and low notes. He had 3 octave range too. They both were great friends and the respect was mutual. Roy went to Elvis concerts from 1954 to 1976. He recorded a tribute song to Elvis 'Hound Dog Man '.
Oh yeah, so glad you brought Roy to us today! No one else has come close to his voice, & apparently Elvis said he’d never cover one of his songs because he couldn’t do any better. Look forward to hearing more, you’re gonna be really amazed when you hear the rich power he brings…rolling like warm butter. As he aged his voice developed this really unique roll that only enriched his singing (ala “Drive All Night” & this one). As for “The Traveling Wilburys”…YES, please take a listen, they’re one of my favorite groups ever. Happy Thanksgiving man to you& yours!
I remember reading that The Beatles were waiting in the wings for Roy's set to finish, and one of them said "How the fuck are we supposed to follow THAT...?" Answers on a postcard please.
This is such a great song. And I'm glad you took a chance to see how impeccably solid Mr. Orbison's live singing was. I can't wait until you check out "I Drove All Night", another big hit from his comeback era!
Sal, When you do check out 'I drove all night', please also do Cyndi Lauper's version which technically was recorded after but released before Roy's version (due to his death and posthumous song release). As much as I love Roy and everything he sings; Cyndi's version is my favourite.
Roy Orbison has the sexist baritone, and voice every heard!! Just love this dude!! His voice was just so smooth, and velvety!! He's awesome beyond words!! If he had lived just a couple of more years, he would have come back as once again a major, major singing and recording star!! ... Love and miss ya Roy!!
The Diamond Awards took place on November 19th, 1988 in Belgium, he would die less than a month later. He'd been due to fly to London and had been resting after his last concert on December 4th, which you can listen to as it was released in 2010.
One of the greatest voices in pop/rock for sure. One of his sons said that Roy lived for the "high notes" nobody could make it look and sound so effortlessly . Never bee another Roy. Was a great human being as well.. humble and very kind, respectful and generous
Oh! I'm so glad you went with "The Voice" - Mr. Roy O. This man sang my heart in every one of his songs. So much of his life was filled with pain, and to a certain extent, he let that bleed into his vocals. Thank you so much for this, Salvo!
Fun fact: Jay Black is also called "The Voice." As far as I know they never went head to head in a singing contest. Both can sing rings around most vocalists.
Check out "Roy Orbison - A Black & White Night" - a live concert in which Roy is joined on stage by many giants in the music biz - Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, J.D. Souther (who collaborated on many of The Eagles songs). Backing vocalists were K.D. Lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Rait. Superb!
Roy sure could sing those high notes at will and at the just the right time in every song...amazing. You might want to check out Roy's solos with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which are simply gorgeous - his cover of Unchained Melody is a must. Roy didn't use his dark glasses as a prop - he had extremely poor vision (I think that all his siblings had this issue) and had to use very thick lenses to see. The clear thick lenses distorted his looks so he had the lenses made from a dark (almost black) colored glass to help with that issue.
One of the top vocalists and roll vocalists of all time. One of my favorites from the early rock era. This song was very retro with this 1950s style even though it was the 1980s. I was born 1960 so he was just before my time but I grew to live his music! Do more Roy!
Actually, many do not realize this was an overdub performance. If you pay attention to the backup vocalists and listen to the track, it is clear when you pay really close attention that this live appearance was performed to the album track. I recall reading somewhere that the band did not have time to prepare this song because it was too new at the time , and it was a Wilburys effort in producing this song as a solo for Roy.
Re Elvis...Elvis once said that Roy Orbison was his favorite male singer...:) As for female singer I think it was Anne Murray (he played her album often). Thx for great reactions ;-)
He is definitely one of the greatest Operatic POP vocalists of all time. After 25 years without a hit, it was like a new generation had discovered his vocal talents. And, with songwriters like Tom Petty writing songs like this one for Orbison that incorporated an extensive vocal range, who knows how many more hits he would have had if he had not passed at such a young age. Obviously, Petty would not have written this song for himself.
@@michaellockhart554 Actually, it was REwritten for Roy... Costello's original version was quite a bit different then what he delivered to Roy, which is, by all means, the ultimate version... At least in my opinion, anyway...
Definitely go deep on Roy. Black and White Night was a star-studded concert that spanned his career while he was surrounded by artists who were all big fans. He was enjoying a huge come-back when he was taken away from us.
A cover of this by Bonnie Raitt ended up becoming a minor hit in 1995, being included on the soundtrack of the film "Boys on the Side". One part of the video shows stars Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Barrymore dancing with Bonnie toward the end of the song.
One of the Greatest Legendary Rockers, he had the voice, harmony and rhythm. Pal.... That's the era that started it. Glad to see you reach that far back. Google "The Grass Roots" & "BadFinger".
An interviewer famously asked Elvis what it was like to have the best voice in the world. Elvis said, you will have to ask Roy Orbison. How is that for a reference?
Once again, music of my life. His voice was there, at every stage of my young life, floating out of every radio that I ever listened to late into the nights of my insomniac youth. His first big hit was released two years before I was born, so yah, that voice is almost archetypal for me.
Thanks, Salvo - all about George Harrison putting together the "Traveling Wilburys".. I look forward to hearing more from you... esp. the Wilburys... fantastic...
This song has Jeff Lynne all over it, have to check out the Traveling Wilburys as well. Jeff was a co-songwriter with Petty and Orbison, producer and backup singer on the recording of this one so yeah...even if you didn't know that you can tell. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Got_It It was released after his death in 1988.
I like how you gave a mention to The Traveling Wilburys, the supergroup he was a part of. It consisted of himself, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison. Their most notable singles they did were "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line".
You should (if you haven't already) check out Roy's "Black and White Night" videos. A wonderful live concert featuring some top players in the band. That version of "Pretty Woman" is a blast.
yeah, you're gonna love End of the Line by the Traveling Wilburys, it's just the ultimate everything's cool when you've got good friends and no hard feelings kinda song
Right from 1960, and "Only The Lonely", I have been enjoying Roys beautiful singing. Another song where the artist can "Hold A Note" imo is Gene Pitney singing I'm Gonna Be Strong" (studio version). Please wait right to the end to witness the crescendo.
I read an interview with Tom Petty talking about working with the Wilburys. The gist was - how could Tom ask Roy to do another take when his voice was perfection?
Roy had the most beautifully unique voice in music. Elvis certainly had a unique voice as well, but Roy's voice was just sublime. More beautiful than any of the crooners, certainly more beautiful than anything since. This song is strongly influenced by Roy's involvement with the Wilburys. Not surprising, since Petty and Lynne cowrote it with Orbison, with Lynne producing it.

Yet most reactors don’t even take the time to Like or push traffic to the original bands social media channels so that they at least get an algorithmic boost on You Tube. I’ve seen reactors get more views in one year than the original video got in over a decade. I’m not saying that content providers don’t do work for the donations and subs that come in but compared to the work and talent of the original artists, it shouldn’t be easier to make more than they ever will just by hitting record and watching them work. I hope that makes sense. I joined in on a Live Streaming chat last night scheduled for a 2 hour time slot. As soon as the Reactors went live, Five $50.00 donation super chats came in Requesting Reactions. That’s $250.00 within the first 5 minutes of this 2 hour live streaming Reaction chat. I know that UA-cam takes their cut but that’s more than some lawyers make or charge per hour. If you have more than one platform, you could make twice as much. Just saying… stay aware of the big picture and roll with the technological changes before another shift change in technology that will start the new social media money making trend. The longevity will have to include your generation getting our generation to react to what genre you grooved to growing up, to keep the conversation with the viewers going because eventually we will run out of favorites. Roy Orbison voice is hypnotizing to me.
I don't know anyone who doesn't love Roy Orbison.
Roy Orbison was the musicians musician. They will tell you that they took inspiration from his singing
Once you watch Roy Orbison, you never forget him. He’s definitely one of a kind.

The studio version is almost identical. Check out Roy's Black and White concert, amazing with so many artists who revered him.
It is actually the studio version. (They played along to the studio version)

The big O .. he does sing effortlessly 👌🏼 Actually Elvis was about 15 mos older than RO. Definitely a gem of an artist. Thnx Salvo😊
Elvis was asked if he had to chose vocals from anyone else, he said Roy Orbison without doubt.
one of the most unique voices ever
