- Germany's entry to the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Katja Ebstein - "Theater"
Written by the team of Ralph Siegel (at the piano) and Bernd Meinunger, this catchy and (ahem) theatrical number was aptly performed by German diva Katja Ebstein in her third of three appearances at the contest, each with a classic.
This was arguably Germany's first realistic shot at the title, and their first silver position. (Of course, they wouldn't need to wait much longer for their long-awaited maiden win.)

I just will always repeat the same thing: This song was just way and way better than Johnny Logan. Because this is the true Eurovision Song Contest Song.
Or maybe their was a higher quality of singer's .wouldn't consider this better than Johnny Logan by along shot.so it's allamatrer of choice

1980's was the decade of the germans , this was a fantastic way to kick it off !!!
1977 - 1987 were Germany's golden years at Eurovision. Except 1984 they were always in Top 10 in those years.

This was better than Johnny Logan. A true ESC song.

Such a great entry, coupled with such a good performance. My winner of 1980, though the United Kingdom and Switzerland would have also done well in my books too.

Amazing entry, this one! This or Johnny Blue may be my favourite German entry ever. A foreword before my points of 1980 - I *much* prefer Johnny Logan’s song in 1987:

True, but this was the first time when Germany were ever up there at the top of the board, for their nearest competitors to catch and not the other way around. Much as I love this song, my favourite of Katja Ebstein's entries is still "Wunder gibt es immer wieder".
kATJA Ebstein a par le passé déjà représenté à deux reprises l'Allemagne, en 1970 et en 1971. Elle a fini chaque fois à la troisième place alors que selon moi elle aurait pu gagner, surtout en 1971. En 1980, elle s'est une nouvelle fois inclinée face à Johnny Logan et a du se contenter de la deuxième place alors que là aussi, elle méritait une fois de plus de gagner.
Und vielen danke liebling fur diese :) A true classic. In one sense you are correct that this was the closest until then that Germany came to winning. Though Katja in 71 looked like a possibility for a while. And in 70 she only jumped into 3rd place right at the end of the voting. Mary Roos was the only other German that came close really at that time.

Something was wrong with the voting system of ESC in the past! The national juries, including experts in music, could not make the right choices. Indisputably, the German entries, “Theatre” in 1980 and “Johnny Blue” in 1981, were the best. I follow the righting the wrongs approach through listening to Katja Ebstein and Lena Valaitis almost everyday on the UA-cam!
They truly deserved this loyalty….
As we know from our many discussions and with our friends, I differ from you as I think Diese Welt is one of the greatest songs ever to grace a Eurovision stage & thus Katja's best, but as I know I tend to be always in the minority :)

The German and the Swiss entry are pratically the same this year WTF
SimsMoyal I actually meant meant up to that point in time (1980), I am aware that in '81 3 juries from the end, after Cyprus voted, Germany was in the joint lead. Even in '71 technically the closest Katja got to leading was after the 2nd jury voted, but given the way the votes were delivered that wasnt noticed. Monaco became outright leader halfway through & was never surpassed.
A terrific song but 1980 was about as good as Eurovision gets. Some tough competition. Let's just say Bucks Fizz did themselves a favor by not going up until the following year.

How is he mistaken? He was referring to German entries in the 70s. Until 1980 (and, indeed, 1981) Germany had never come that close to winning.
