The Eurovision Song Contest 1977 was the 22nd edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in London, United Kingdom, following the country's victory at the 1976 contest with the song "Save Your Kisses for Me" by Brotherhood of Man. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the contest was held at the Wembley Conference Centre on 7 May 1977, marking the first time the event took place in the month of May since the first contest in 1956. The contest was hosted by English journalist Angela Rippon.
Eighteen countries participated in the contest; Sweden returned after its absence from the previous edition, while Yugoslavia decided not to enter.
The winner was France with the song "L'Oiseau et l'Enfant", performed by Marie Myriam, written by Joe Gracy, and composed by Jean-Paul Cara. The United Kingdom, Ireland, Monaco and Greece rounded out the top five. Greece's fifth place finish was their best result up to that point. France' fifth win was also a record at the time, and one that France held onto for six years, until being equalled by Luxembourg in 1983.

As an Israeli child, I appriciat you put Ilanit in first place, she also represented us in 1973 (our first year in eurovision) and got 4th
Glad to see Finland in 3rd
They deserved it and could be higher in 1977. Finnish people and Saami people.

Ilanit's song is still sung at Jewish weddings around the world. It has survived the test of time , unlike so many Eurovision entries. I certainly think it should have placed higher in the contest.
Silver Convention were a classy and already well known act, but didn't have the expected success at Eurovision . I put that down to the song . They were as professional and polished as ever, but heard in comparison with some of the other songs that year?
Despite Monica's one tricky high note which was due to her having a cold I think 'Lapponia ' was the stand out song for me that year. She and her backing singers still delivered the song so well . I can't discount her for one note , she was great.
L'enfant et l'oiseau was iconic and Marie Myriam seemed so modest and charming in the way she sang it. It is beautifully composed with the sections being able to be sung simultaneously.
The Spanish song brings a smile. UK 's Rock Bottom was a novelty comedy type number in style and a great performance. Thank you for your comments SchlagerLucas.
Do you know what about with other Israeli songs? Chai, Hora, Kan, Amen? Liora`s song melody is similar to few religious songs in catholic church (Poland)

Agree! and did you know that the 3 back up singers were British? and Eldad Shrem the composer taught them what they should sang without understanding one single word in Heb? finelly they did all a great job. Thank you!amir gat

And you're so wrong about the songs, almost all of them are total masterpieces. I really put them in my 1st place a lot of times.

I love this year!
I remember this year fondly - I was 14, Rock Bottom was my favorite. And the Swiss song (sorry!) was the infinite source of laugh for the whole summer of '77. We were yodeling on the beach... 😂

It's hard to choose a least favourite from this year but it's been Sweden and Norway. They're not that interesting even though the singers are good.
The Dream Express girls (Belgium) represented the Netherlands in 1970 as The Hearts of Soul.

I think you've done your usual trick and overated the ballads and the cheesy bops - but mostly i agree with this one - Greece needed to be higher.
