Sophie and Magaly were a French musical duo composed of twin sisters Sophie (24 August 1962 - 27 February 2019) and Magaly Gilles-Giovannoni (24 August 1962 - 2 April 1996). The duo are best known for representing Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 with the song "Papa Pingouin", placing ninth. However, the song was a commercial success in France, where over one million copies of the single were sold. Their second single, "Arlequin", sold poorly, and their German producer Ralph Siegel of the label Ariola dropped them from the label shortly thereafter. Producer Charles Talar subsequently gave them a second chance, however, their follow-up singles "Toi" and "Les nanas de Zorro" were equally unsuccessful, and the group disbanded shortly thereafter.
In the late 1980s, Magaly contracted HIV, and died of AIDS in April 1996. Sophie suffered from high depressive syndrome and lived in the south of France. She died in 2019.
FUN FACT: Silly penguin is Jean-Paul Cara. He has a rich Eurovision experience. He is the one who composed the winning song from Eurovision 1977. These are his connections with Eurovision:
1.Germany 1982: La paix sur terre (lyricist French version)
2.France 1981: Humanahum (composer)
3.France 1977: L'oiseau et l'enfant (composer)
4.France 1976: Un, deux, trois (lyricist)
And became a very famous child song in Luxembourg and France 🐧
He also competed in Luxembourg's NF in 1978, where he lost to Baccara

Only at Eurovision: This song went from being heard in ESC to being heard by Children 25 years later.
The only song?
yup, its a popular children's song in France
Imagine being 9th in ESC 1980 and being so iconic that even official ESC chanel put video with that song🐧
RIP Magaly (1996) & Sophie (2019) 🙏
I never heard them until today. That’s sad
😢
Underrated entry, which deserved higher place. Very tragic that both sisters are gone.
I can remember the grief Sophie was in 1996 after the loss of her twin
Of course it's tragic that both twins are no longer with us but eighth place in such a strong year as 1980 is more than enough. I'd argue it's overrated actually.
9th place - but they managed to beat all Scandinavian entries ...
@@joshlevicq6823 Forgot about Austria but my point still stands. :)
Honestly, it could be in my top 5 favourite entries of all times. The charisma, their energy make the song an iconic one. The song itself is also really cute and fun
It may not be famous worldwide but it's a classic in France
i promise you it's not

Not only french. The Pigloo cover was a hit among children in Germany too. 😄
This song is such a huge hit in French speaking countries as a lullaby. It's adorable. :)
Certified banger 🐧🇱🇺
If this was what started the circus-like aspect of the modern-day ESC, I'm happy this was performed! 😊
The song about Genghis Khan was the year before.
Such a sweet song. 🇱🇺❤🇱🇺💕🐧

If Junior Eurovision had already existed in 1980, Sophie & Magaly would certainly have won it by far.
They were 18 at the time of the 1980 contest, the max age at JESC is 15.
They were 17 here in april 1980. Their 18th birthdays were not until few months later in august
@@silvergir89 To that times it didn't matter at all. You could lie about your real age. Look at Sandra Kim who won in 1986! She was only 13.
Sami Aednan, Djambo Djambo, Deschighis Khan and this one were the really quirky but memorable ones from this era.
Horoscopes from Sheeba too

The costumes. the choreography, twins... looks like this was the inspiration for Jedward.
To me this was always one of the hidden ESC gems, I love the vocal arrangement. The ABBA influence shines through but that's not a bad thing at all.
REST IN PEACE Sophie & Magaly!
Penguin is a little bit scary but the harmony between the music and the language is amazing 😊
Rest in peace to both Sophie and Magy...... such a tragic story what happend both of them.... Also this is my all time favourite Luxembourg entry

Finland had a version of this "isä-pappa pingviini" by Armi Aavikko same year 1980
One of my old Eurovision favourites, so fun & catchy! 😄
And all those who complain how Eurovision has now become a "circus" should really take a look at Eurovision history (and a big hard look at themselves, TBH...)!
A true classic
Eternal and lovely euro classic!!!! 🐧❤

This is the only case where we have a blue outline for deceased singers.

@@DanTony68 The color changes depending on whether the singer died just before or not

I have a tech question. Why is one of the lead vocals (the girl in the pink, Magaly I guess?) super loud and panned all the way over to the left speaker, while everyone else's vocals are at a normal level and in the center where they belong? Was this a mistake, or a technical issue, on the original broadcast?

Can I just ask, why, in the midst of a contemporary, modern contest, ESC have decided to post this on their channel? As ESC fans we have a hard time trying to convert casual viewers to the contest, trying to tell them it is relevant and worth watching with the chance to be introduced to some great new artists... This is a song and performance of it's time but it doesn't help to boost the reputation of the modern contest
When Eurovision was a good music contest, now it's a Circus contest, so this year is terrible. 😢
why is israel in this ? its suposed to be about europe
there is a huge outcry to get them baned for their crimes
