How to install an LS engine front timing cover using the SacCity AlignIt tool. It's a great tool that makes aligning the cover super easy and ensures the front crank seal doesn't leak.
Another great video! Will be buying a set of the tools and oiling parts from SacCity. Luckily not needed at the moment, but I like keeping useful items like this around.
Glad you found the video helpful. The AlignIt tools worked great; very well made and thoughtfully designed. I bought the kit with the front and rear installers. I also bought their oil galley barbell (you'll see that in a future video). And I bought their feeler gauge kit that you see in the oil pump install video. All great items.
Hey bud, just a follow up on some knowledge sharing but think this technique might have an opportunity to be better maybe you have already learned that since publishing the video. I currently have a front seal leak on my c5 and believe it to be from improper order of operations.
I did the same technique as you which was torqueing the front cover snug first, then then using the align it. Then I torqued front bolts to 18ft lbs on the cover followed by pan to cover.
Upon further research I have read to have very loosely install the front cover with a couple bolts. Align it tool. Snug bolts to the front after getting block to cover flush. Then torque the pan to cover bolts first to avoid cracking the pan, then criss cross on the front cover. Have you heard similar findings since posting the video a couple years ago?
Am trying to understand the errors in which are leading me to do this again 6k after building my motor. Was hoping you might have learned similar findings as well.
curious on what you ended up doing. I can understand the method in the video, and i have both of the alignment tools but i can't help but wonder why people don't use the alignment tools AND put the oil pan on and torque it down to ensure the timing cover and rear main are seated properly? And then just remove the oil pan to add RTV. Then install it again.
I got about 45 minutes out of my oil pump before it disintegrated in itself and the crank starting to score the inner race of my oil pump, obviously from not being aligned........ that was in the spring now I am putting in a new one as we speak.

How do you install the front seal afterwards without getting it crooked?

I’ve noticed that all these timing cover gaskets have this orange/rust colored residue. Do you know if these are to be installed dry as is or cleaned?
The seal installs dry? I thought I read in my manual to add some clean oil to the seal before installing.
If I remember correctly, the old seals required oil. At some point, I believe GM made a change and instructed the seals go in dry. This is how I installed them on my T/A. No leaks.

Do you have to use that tool to install the timing cover or can I get away with out using it?
Is it mandatory? I suppose not. It helps to align the front cover perfectly so that you have less chance of a front seal leak. For me, I'd rather spend a little extra money now to minimize the chance that I have to go back in and fix anything later.

most people just leave the timing cover bolts loose and tighten the balancer down to 250ft lbs per spec then tighten the cover bolts. The rear main def needs the tool though.

Ive heard of guys, doing the timing cover up once sumps on because some have cracked the front lip of the sump.
