Camshaft and Timing Chain Installation Tips | Engine Building 101

Installing a camshaft and timing chain is a fairly simple procedure.
But there are a few steps you need to take to ensure maximum performance and longevity from these critical engine components. We’ll cover the actual camshaft degreeing process in an upcoming video, but in this video, we’ll show you a few other tips to help make sure the cam and timing chain installation goes just right.

***UPDATE*** Do Not make my mistake. After chasing no oil pressure on a fresh 355. We pulled oil pump Melling HV55 to inspect. Nothing wrong. I told my son to check bottom of pan for maybe we forgot a rag or something. He comes up with Timing gear teeth. Pulled mains /looked good/ pulled t-cover only to find half the teeth missing on lower gear. Culprit was 2 cam galley plugs pushed out of the front of block got caught in middle of dbl roller and granaided sprocket. For the love of god please taps those cam 1/4 pipe plugs. Especially when using a HV pump. Lesson learned. Now i have to put the puzzle together and find all the teeth.

was the engine at TDC? My 5.3 the, the crank key-way would be pointing at the number 1 cylinder for TDC. Am I wrong here?

Copied the timing from this video and bent all my valves. The timing dot on the crank side is 4 teeth to the left from what’s stated in this video.

In some instruction manuals, Loctite is recommended on the thrust plate bolts. I noticed you didn’t use any? It’s that because you are using the ARP lube on the bolts? Can you use both, lube and Loctite?

Does it matter much if your timing chain has a master link as apposed to just a full riveted chain all around? Is that even an option?
